"This is not a bad sportsmanship issue, I will take all responsibility on myself" : Azhar Ali

Azhar Ali speaking to the press:

"I would say keep on watching the video [of the run out]"

"You can say that it was a moment, when both of us did not realize that the game would stop in this way and we didn't even look at the player to see that he was stopping the ball; even when he threw the ball in, it looked that he is throwing the ball in from the boundary"

"When the keeper started to move towards the stumps is that when we realized that something funny [strange] was happening"

"Even then we didn't realize what was happening but it was one of those things that Asad didn't see anything from his point of view; it appeared that ball had gone past the fielder"

"Obviously the outfield was slow but the way the ball went away....but even then there is no excuse that one can gift one's wicket away"

"There were some funny moments in the dressing room later but at that time we were all shocked"

"[If I say what I was saying to Asad Shafiq as I was leaving] then it will become even more funnier"

"We were just discussing the fact that the ball had swung a little late - I had just finished this point - we hadn't discussed the menu or anything at that point"

"Any player who is going through a tough patch has his rhythm effected"

"The player's natural movements, the way he gets his runs and natural way of playing is disturbed"

"Its my intention to fight it out; I have spoken to people in the dressing room and coaching staff and they have all supported me"

"There comes a time when you cant get gaps in the field, luck doesn't favour you, your shot selection goes against you"

"The idea is to fight it out and spend as much time in the field; you can play as long as you want in the nets but the time spent in the match where you start to get gaps then you get the feeling [of confidence] that I got in this innings"

"I started to get runs in a fluent manner against spinners as well"

"I was feeling really good this morning before that dramatic run out"

"It was a great opportunity to continue this morning and if I had spent more time then it would helped me in the upcoming matches as that would have given me the same flow which I have played with in the past 2-2.5 years"

"An opportunity lost [today] but it is an innings that will give me confidence and also flow to my batting did come back today"

"I am feeling much better in the field and in batting as compared to last year" [knee injury]

"We are feeling very confident in this game now; if we can take a few wickets in the morning then it will become easier for us"

"The pitch is bat-able but the way Abbas is bowling or how Bilal bowled, or the way Yasir is bowling, or how Mir Hamza bowled with the new ball, it shows that we have a lot of options for this wicket"

"We are very hopeful that given all the runs we have, we will get them out"

"As I said before, a batsman has a flow in his batting and sometimes he puts the bowler under pressure"

"In this series we saw that I was bogged down for long and was struggling to get singles and it did not payoff when I tried to play over the top"

"I tried to force the pace for which I paid the price [in earlier innings]"

"In this innings, I decided that whatever happens, I will give myself some time on the crease"

"This was missing in the earlier innings which I have fixed and the results are for all to see"

"I will be asked this question [about my run out] a few times and when I go back home, my son will ask me that in a more funnier way"

"It was a shock and there is no explanation about it; I wasn't watching the ball for long which is the reason I missed the whole thing, didn't realize that the ball had stopped at the boundary, someone ran and picked it up"

"It was one of those things that neither Asad or I had a sight of it that someone was running after the ball"

"Even when the throw came in, I thought he threw it in after the ball had hit the skirting"

"Only when Tim Paine started to run towards the stumps that I thought something funny was happening"

"Yes definitely [I was annoyed with myself]"

"First of all it was disappointing because, as a batsman you just got the feeling that the team needed a big partnership to set things up for the last innings"

"You don't want to give a sniff [of a chance] to a team like Australia when you play them"

"At that time it was shocking and everyone was not happy about it"

"Thankfully other batsmen went in and did the job and we laughed about it"

"No one came to me [in the dressing room when I came back] as everyone knows what the batsman is going through anyways"

"So no one came to me and spoke to me about it then but afterwards, about half hour later, players coaches wanted to know and find out about this"

"I don't think this is a bad sportsmanship issue, I will take all responsibility on myself that I was a little bit ignorant about the fact that the ball had not gone for 4; no one came in my way or distracted me"

"This was on me as I didn't follow the ball; they did the right thing"

"My sons will speak about it for years"

"Whenever I say something to them, they will come back to me about this run out"

I dont think ANY one will forget the run out :)

It’s kind of Australia’s fault in a way. Australia played so badly that it made Pakistan team so relaxed/confident with the 300-ish run lead.

Azhar Ali was so relaxed and chill. Extremely laid back when out there batting. He wasn’t even imitated by the Aussies one bit. His job was literally was spend some leisure time out there. And there is NO problem withthat. Azhar wasn’t so focused/interested on game—and it didn’t even need to after Pakistan’s ridiculously HUGE lead. Azhar was cruising easiely with no pressure whatsoever. COOL confidence display by Ali. I wish more Pakistani batsmen can play such a cool innings like he did.

A un-cool batsman would be carefully watching everything and would be extremely unhesitant.

Now I wanna know :yk3

Oh someone has guts to accept his fault in this pakistani team rather than giving excuses

So basically his blockathon inns was to get his confidence back and get into the right flow. God help us if we get such boring and pointless inns against black caps.

Glad he was run out, atleast teams inns got back on track once he did.

At least he gets 10/10 for being honest and keeping his sense of humor about it..

Impressed by his attitude. Most Pakistan cricketers I know would make cringy remarks.

There's no better exit way from this embarrassing event. But credit where it is due. He did face like a man.

Aussies did nothing wrong at all. It was not for them to tell Azhar "hey, the ball didn't cross the line!":)):)) I would have done exactly what the Aussie keeper did. There is no cheating about it at all.

The equivalent of warning Azhar that they are about to run him out for sheer sloppyness is the equivalent of Anderson warning you the next one will be his in dipper so remember to get your bat out in front of the pad Azhar.

Just a funny, ridiculous incident really. Move on. I mean Inzi is your chief selector so I can't see him being dropped for it!

Obviously it is not and good on Azhar to accept the mistake. Time to move on, things like this happen.

:)))

For a guy with immense powers of concentration Azhar was probably one of the last persons you’d think would get run out like that. Pretty hilarious though and good on him to see the funny side.

Aussies haven't been the best when it comes to sportsmanship but the pair in the middle both have themselves to blame 100%. Good on Azhar for accepting this and not taking it too seriously.

It seems a bit odd that people are now congratulating him for owning up to his sheer lack of professionalism. On another day, it will cosst you a Test series. Also, he first makes a lot of excuses (slow outfield, Asad Shafiq nott seeing the ball, "the way the ball went" off his bat) before concluding that there are no excuses.
