Thoughts on Athar Ali Khan's commentary?

Akram & Rameez come from home revised a few words & keep repeating throughout the day. I mean how can you say ‘his gone for a well played 0 ‘

Uh..the only time I ever hear Rameez say that is when he's being sarcastic, in fact he usually is sarcastic.

Disgusting and biased commentary he was going after the umpire for giving it a boundary when it was clearly a boundary than you could hear him screaming on the replay that take. The bails quickly

Hes up there with wasim akram as awful

They are horrid to listen to

Can’t be any worse than Waqar Younus or Sikandar Bakht. Couldn’t stand them.

Athar Ali Khan commentary

For the love of all things sane please take him off the commentary duties.

My ears are hurting from his over-exacerbation at the littlest of things.

Everytime I've had the misfortune of listening to him it's like someone's given him a jolt of electricity and then supplied him with the mic and shown him the way to the commentary box.

Yup hes very biased and gets defensive about Bangladesh

Hopefully they lose today and go back home

He scared the crap out of me when he shouted out 'OFFCUTTER' when graphic of Muztafizur's variations came up. He honestly doesn't know he has a mic next to him.

What an odd man.

He just did that. When Murali karthik talked about Oman missing opportunities he got defensive and said Both sides missed opportunities.

He is very biased and simply poor.

But, he is the best Bangladesh have. Other Bangladeshi commentators are worse.

One of his issue is that he can't control his emotions and starts behaving like a fan

I think you shouldn't be 'too' patriotic while sitting in the commentary box.

Actually there was another Bangladeshi commentator, who IMO was better than Athar.

I have forgotten his name but I remember he had deep voice.

I think you are referring to Shamim Chowdhury.

Athar is an ex-cricketer. He has played for Bangladesh.

Shamim has no cricket background. Also, I find him more annoying.

Shamim? He’s just as bad

Shamim is worse than Athar to me.

Too emotional as a Bangladesh commentator. I fear one day he may not be able to control his emotions and embarrass Bangladesh cricket team with a biased rant or tears of sorry

I find it entertaining how much energy he invests in Bangladesh while doing commentary. It's almost as if you made the biggest diehard fan of a team to commentate on its game.

Last game, one of the Omani players skied one ball..

Alan Wilkins: "In the aiiirr.. It's been hit well..."

*Ball falls between the fielders*

Alan Wilkins: *chuckles* "Athar you're off your chair in the com box.." (as the ball went up)

Athar Ali Khan: *in a super defensive tone* "No I am NOT! I was surprised you said it's been hit well, because it was always going to the fielders":))

There is no way you can take bias off your commentary, every commentator have their loyalty to their nation.. I would rather have a commentator whose representing us should be rooting for us too.. Not everyone is like Nasser Hussein or Mike Atherton..

It's your national instinct...

But yea Athar does sound annoying though, but I guess he can't keep the national bias under control.

Some of them are all too eager to please the fans and cricketing board from their nation. It is a formula used by every commentator and even the best of them show their bias now and then.

I am afraid that there is no such thing as neutral commentator and it will be unreasonable to expect one to exist. Least we can do is call out those over the board types like Athar

It’s like his about to bust a blood vessel when Bangladesh puts bat on ball !!

Think Athar is West Pakistani by origin, whose ancestors settled in Bangladesh.

It's admirable how Athar gives his heart, blood and soul for Bangladesh everytime it plays a game. And they say Pakistanis don't integrate:shakib

sanjay datt , sharukh khan, amitabh bachan, anil kapoor and list goes on there are all from Pakistan then? stop associating people coz their ancestors lived across the border in the past they are what they are .

Don’t care if he bias or not…literally every commentator is bias towards their own team. The only one that’s probably the least bias is Rambo.

But, Athar Ali Khan is still a very poor commentator.

*ball goes for six*

“That’s a good shot for six”

*shows highlight of six*

*screams into the mic*

“OH WHAT A SHOT THATS HUGE THATS INCREDIBLE”.

He’s just not made for commentary.

Yeah.

Athar has a Pakistani ancestry but he was born in Bangladesh.

Honestly the worst commentator to ever exist in any sport. My ears bleed listening to him. Someone needs to cancel him and have him removed permanently from the mic.

It's not that deep lol.

Athar's voice is soothing and I appreciate it:shakib

I think he had some sorta hysteria and panic attack when you get the courage to hear him at the replay of Khushdil Shah's wicket.

It's at 7:43

He went all quite when Shadab and Nawaz were hitting sixes at the end lol. Every commentator is biased to their country but this guy takes his bias to another level.

One of the best along with Sivaramakrishnan. Can't seem to get Athar's signature line out of my head 'have a look at that' (in his signature voice too).

I suppose it’s a good thing he gets excited, however he’s commentating as a Bangladeshi fan in the sense he’s screaming and getting excited for Bangladesh haha.

hahah. This made me chuckle! And now, it's in my head too.

Feel sorry for him. When Pakistan were 4 down he could not control himself. He was screaming but he should know by now that cricket is a funny game. The game is not over until the last ball is bowled.

Tamim Iqbal speaks okay. I hope he will take up commentary role after he retires.

Athar is very poor but he is the best Bangladesh has currently.

Russell Arnold takes the cake in my opinion; who assumes in every game that Lankans are the king of the hill. He is the most annoying in my opinion. I can understand the inferiority complex of Ather but, what is the deal with Russell?

Just cant stand him, forced to watch the match on mute if he is on.

I guess it was a shout fest yesterday between him and Sikandar Bakht just too much for my ears. :)

I have hardly seen people praising any commentator. They are all bad according to fans.

Most of them are awful tbh

In the past youd have, educated journalistic voices who knew when to add something and when to the let the action on the pitch do the talking

Nowadays the obsession seems to be to get an ex player from the host countries in to commentate even if they god awful and un capable of doing the job in hand

Saying 20 odd balls since last boundary. Who cares when the run rate is hovering at 5.5 an over!

The secret to Bangladesh improving as a team is Athar leaving the commentary box. Please Bangladesh make it happen :))

Arnold s english is bad. He is okay when doing tamil commentatory for star sports tamil.

His most famous dialect of all time is - 'Back to back centuries by Mahmudullah Riad'

Mahmudullah scored 2 centuries in 2015 world cup. For next 4-5 years every time he came to bat, Athar used to remind this :P

He has provided a lot of content for memes in two days so far. So win win for everyone.

I mentioned this in another thread.

The standard of commentary has gone downhill badly in recent times.

Most are cheerleaders with very tactical awareness about cricket. Many have no game awareness or have much knowledge about the technical side of the game, which means that they just talk non-stop rubbish just to make themselves feel relevant.

I met Richie Benaud in a press box un the UK and asked him what was the key to being a good commentator, his response was "only open your mouth if you have something relevant to say, otherwise keep quiet"

Only because of his screamings put me off from watching every time Pakistan play Bangladesh

There is no commentator worse then Anjum Chopra. Not even Atar Ali Khan.

I hate her voice. Every time she commentates I mute otherwise I will go insane.

So sad there are so many bad commentator these days.

Yeah. Commentary quality has gone down worldwide.

Alot of broadcasters are sadly going for token diversity these days by have a certain number of women commentators in every commentary team. If the commentator is good, then that's well and good. In Pakistan for instance, Sana Mir is better than most other Pakistani male commentators. But when you get Anjum Chopra and Isa Guha that becomes a problem because both are absolutely unbearable to listen to and have nothing unique or interesting to say.

There's a reason everyone can't just become a good commentator.

This is what he said yesterday when Pakistan were two down on the cusp of victory:

"The required run-rate is just above 6. It's not easy at all considering that Pakistan has to counter the quality spin and pace offered by Bangladesh"

Really!!! I just can't believe. I didn't expect that from him actually.

The expectations are also different in this two era. In Richie era the viewers were also classical. They loved analysis didn't bother about glamour .

But things are different now.Richie would not have been a demanding and popular commentor in this era I can bet. Many would have called him boring. There were a only a few from the past (like Henry Bloefeld, Tony Greig) who would have made it in the present T20 dhamaka era.

Yes, some commentators are absolutely disgraceful. Other than those you just can't compare between two era as like comparing two great cricketers from two different times.

That is clearly a sarcasm not a serious comment. I enjoyed this line actually.
