It was 5 years ago, I was very irate why a violent terror MQM had such a stranglehold over the most educated populace of the country and why they weren't going for the alternative option of PTI.

But now given, intimidation and rigging free elections, they have not only rejected MQM
(be it the cut down version) but PPP too in some of its iconic flagship constituencies.

Let's hope the elected officials now genuinely improve Karachi for all its residents not just pockets to keep their votebank.

Karachites ... Dil Khush kar deya. We salute you!
 
Karachi is the economic backbone of the country, lets develop into something special. Get a plan together, put good people in charge and implement with a passion.
 
Absolutely amazing.
Have been blown away by the success of PTI in Karachi and even more so by the will of the people.
 
Probably won't happen for practical reasons but it would be hugely symbolic if Imran Khan decides to keep his seat from Karachi.
 
Very happy that my city voted as Pakistanis rather than Karachiites eventhough it's easy to be scared by fear mongering and vote ethnically

I always maintained that in 2013 PTI could have pulled a few more seats in Karachi if IK and PTI had bothered to campaign here. Can you imagine not even one jalsa was held here. But this time it was much better even if no where near Lahore, which is understandable I guess.

I also wish that Imran Khan decides to keep his Karachi seat because after so many years the people here voted enmasse for someone from outside the city. It would be a good symbolic gesture
 
Great achievement.

PTI will need to work now, as [MENTION=138463]Slog[/MENTION] said. They abandoned Karachi for 5 years. It's only because everyone hates Noon that PTI has won here.

With Altoo calling for a boycott, and all the MQM machinery in PSP, this was the best chance for PTI to win. Next time won't be that easy.
 
Wazir-e-Azam Karachi se.... loved how my city rose above ethnic lines to vote for PTI. Long may it continue.

Tbh, we've never had a chance to rise above it. Imagine rising above ethnic lines to vote for PPP or PML-N :))

P.S: JI used to win from Karachi, the mayor before Mustafa Kamal was from JI. So we've done it a few times

Karachiites - Can you outline some of the problems that you think PTI should solve that makes quality of life better for people of Karachi both in the long term and short term?

Whar are few items that you think are not overly complicated to solve but previous administrations were not able to solve for whatever reasons...a few short term goals?

1- ?
2- ?
3- ?
What are few things that you hope PTI can improve in next 12 or so months? Please list them. a few short term goals


1- ?
2- ?
3- ?

What will PTI need to do in order to ensure that people are well servred to the point that they dont fall back in the trap of MQM's hate monerging and vote ethnically in next election(s) Long term goals?

Let's start with one.....

Provision of clean running water to every household.

True on both counts. It takes a lot for Karachi to vote for an outsider. If Imran khan does keep his Karachi seat and PTI delivers in Karachi , they will carry Karachi forever . Karachi is there for the taking .Someone needs to fill the space that MQM has created.Deliver on your promises and Karachi is yours

1- Water
2- Garbage issues, which is tied in to illegals living in Jhopris, that should be removed. Unlike MQM, I'll admit that crime happens from people living there, but they also do jobs that some others won't, so maybe some alternate accommodation?
3- Roads

1- Government schools working to proper standards
2- Civil hospital working to proper standards
3- Actual projects undertaken, maybe attempt to revive Circular Railway

What will PTI need to do in order to ensure that people are well servred to the point that they dont fall back in the trap of MQM's hate monerging and vote ethnically in next election(s) Long term goals?


1- MQM has some valid points, so first one is from something both agree on. Power to the Mayor
2- Again, following on from that, strengthening of City government. I would love a new province away from PPP, but being reasonable here :))
3- Actual party presence in Karachi. So far, PTI has nothing to speak of in Karachi, people voted for Imran the person, not the party's mechanism in Karachi.

1- Clean water , Trash pickup services
2- fix roads /bridges
3- Fix govt offices/services

1- Police Nizam
2- Fix Govt school Education system
3- Merit per faisla

What will PTI need to do in order to ensure that people are well servred to the point that they dont fall back in the trap of MQM's hate monerging and vote ethnically in next election(s) Long term goals?


1- FIX RACISM on and organizational and governmental level
2- END OF QUOTA SYSTEM
3- May be take in some good BIG names from MQM and give them a stake in Karachi politics
 
People of Karachi did an amazing job and showed great maturness.
 
I used to be against Quota system, but I've seen some of the areas people come from, and how poor they are. While I think the quota for jobs is ridiculous, but in education, some sort of quota for people from poorer areas in Sindh should always be there

I agree with you the quota should go to the deserving poor but I have seen sons and daughters of waderas that actually live in karachi 300 days out of 360 but then get admissions on rural quotas. As far as jobs goes PPP has always filled up state companies with excess staff then destroyed the company. Did the same to Kesc and once destroyed Zardari bought it cheap 10 cents to the dollar after firing and giving golden handshakes with government money .
 
PPP still have majority, PTI still cant do anything in city of karachi without PPP. I hope they pass some bills so local body has more power to work on projects like in Musharrafs tenure.
 
Thank you Karachi! I was expecting plenty of votes and few seats as i saw plenty of my friends from Karachi showing support for PTI after being mostly MQM supporters but this is way beyond my expectations.

Agreed. We need to be realistic about the changes federal gov't can bring on a city level. Many of the issues highlighted in this thread are either provincial or city government's hand. Federal gov't can make macro or policy changes but much of the on the ground change has to be done by provincial and city officials and neither of those are PTI.

Federal government can push provincial and city governments to perform otherwise funding will be cut. Keep in mind head of state is PM and Karachi and Sindh fall under state.

After 18th amendment these provincial govt are made so strong federal can't play with local bodies, health, education etc
 
was there any rigging in Karachi? there are rumours that rigging was committed in Karachi for PTI; the results of Karachi are the most astonishing; the 2 main parties of Karachi for a long time have been MQM and PPP but this election they suffer big time and only got 2 seats each while PTI (which is a newbie for Karachi) got a whooping 14 seats

Thats the excuse MQM used for its non performance and i didn't fly this election . People of Karachi want things to get done ....

Every party cries foul when they lose. The phainty was was a mix of many reasons (hell, people even voted for ALH with a stone on their hearts). Anyway Ik has invited everyone to come forward with their shikayatain and investigations will be done to determine if any foul play was involved.

Like I said, everybody cries when they lose. The awaam is very easily manipulated. Even IK said there was rigging in the last elections but unlike others he has said that all claims of rigging will be investigated to see if there was any foul play and if it is proved it will be dealt with accordingly.
 
PTI is the first party in a long time that has found significant appeal across the ethnic and regional divide in Pakistan. The victory has united the nation at least for now. Hopefully the other parties which have relied on regional partisanship will learn a lesson in how to conduct a campaign in the future.

How is PPP a big party from Karachi lol. It wins 2 or so everytime
 
I hope PTI do carry out some big projects for people of Karachi to give the people some relief and so that they feel they made the right choice.

It's after so long that Karachiites voted for someone else eventhough the easier choice would have been stick with the known quantity in MQM or go with the party playing the ethnic Mohajircard in PSP.

I know PTI will not be in Sindh government but even then they must do everything they can to do something in Karachi because otherwise the city will be forced to go back to an ethnic party
 
Btw, on the rigging, if you see ECP results, there are 3-4 seats where MQM+PSP vote is greater than PTI vote. That alone will explain it's not rigging, but splitting. Add to that a sizable number of MQM voters who listened to Altaf and didn't vote. Add to that the fact that even many Jamaatis would vote MQM at times, it's obvious why PTI won, and also why it'll be harder next time.

There's no rigging, it's a combination of luck, a weak opposition and Imran's message.

Seriously though, the weather has improved. Last two nights specially have been cooler.
 
Want IK to keep his seat in Karachi and oversee all the developmental work as well. He can use the carrot and stick approach for PPP to keep them in check while backing MQM representatives to work their best in their respective constituencies. But perhaps I’m hoping too much too soon.
 
I am so proud to be from Karachi! If it wasn't for Karachiites, PTI would have to form a government with unwanted coalition partners. Now, we can form government on our own and deliver a Naya Pakistan rather than a semi-Naya Pakistan.

Trust me, this was not rigged at all. PTI got a HUGE amount of votes from Karachi in 2013 despite the rigging and violence. This time, there was a very visible mood for change in Karachi, and there was no one to stop Karachiites from voting for who they wanted to. We counted Karachi out because we simply did not expect them to deliver a result in PTIs favour.

Another point to make is that the only opinion polling agency that still had MQM in the lead was Roshan Pakistan. The few other surveys that came out, while flawed in other ways, actually put MQM as the 3rd - 4th biggest party in Karachi, with PPP at 1st and PTI narrowly behind. I think the final two weeks of campaigning really sealed the deal for PTI in Karachi.

Also, Quetta deserves three cheers too!! Despite the bomb attack, they turned up and gave PTI an unexpected win!
