I thought that would happen after the three big beasts Cable, Davey and Swinson returned.

Then Paddick walked today over Farron's faith issues over sexuality, and Farron jumped before he was pushed.

Jo for Leader and Sir Vince for Deputy, I say.....

Interesting comments about his religion. He said that it's impossible' for him to be Liberal Democrat leader and remain faithful to Christ'.

the @reelpolitcast boys got him

Disappointing news, he did not deserve to be hounded for his religious views in the way he was in the campaign. He did not vote against bills advancing LGBT rights yet he continues to be labelled as homophobic.

I'm sure he can continue to contribute in some capacity to the party.

Looks like Jo Swinson and Vince Cable are the frontrunners to succeed him.

Emotional arguments win out over intellect once again. This is an historical problem for Liberals, the most considering of parties.

Not a great few weeks for the two on the right.

A sly, dishonest, and actually quite strange little homophobe.

A bizarre resignation statement also that does not even attempt to save face in his usual sly and dishonest fashion - he is essentially confessing to the homophobia.

The Dems are well rid of Farron and I am personally glad that he will not be on the telly much anymore.

Homophobes don't vote for gay marriage again and again.

What he has done is consistently work to advance the rights of gay people, while believing that they will have to account for themselves before God in the afterlife. He has helped make more people more free from state control, which is the essence of Liberalism.

Having said that, the sin thing did come up a lot on the doorsteps, costing us ultra-marginals East Fife, Ceredigion, Richmond and St Ives, so I think he has done the right thing for the party.

He was hardly a pioneer Robert. His record on LGBT-related votes is pretty mixed actually:

https://www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/whats-tim-farrons-track-record-on-lgbt-rights

He actually abstained from the final reading of the Equal Marriage Bill, which is disgraceful.

Hmm, evidence of editorial bias in that article I think. Here is the true picture: https://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/11923/tim_farron/westmorland_and_lonsdale/votes

I know a few LGBT activists who won't hear a word against the bloke, but he was unable to get his message across unambiguously and looked like a dissembler.

The Lib Dems were quite pale & male historically but he pushed the inclusivity message and now there are more BAME members, four women MPs ourpt of twelve (five of thirteen if Sarah Olney had got 44 more votes) and even a half-Palestinian female MP.

Anyway I always saw him as a caretaker leader after the 2015 wipeout and now a more capable one will emerge.

Jo Swinson has ruled herself out of being Leader, saying that she would rather go for Deputy Leader.

Methinks it's Norman Lamb time.

Could be. Sir Vince is too old now, and Sir Ed has the intellect but probably a bit bland.
