Time for Pakistan to allocate their pace resources in a sensible manner?

Expecting a bowler to compete in 3 formats, with their inevitable forays into franchise cricket would be a strain on them - even some of the very best in the era struggle.

Should Pak look to assign bowlers (barring injuries/cover) to 2 international formats max? Focusing on just pure pace bowling slots:

Test: Abbas, Naseem, Shaheen
ODI: Amir, Shaheen, Naseem
T20: Amir, Rauf, Usman

Cheekily placed Rauf in there, surely his selection is inevitable barring injury. Of course Hasan Ali could return for LOIs, while Rauf could also prove himself for 50 overs.

While the names are not set in stone (never should they be) and there are options beyond those listed above - is 2 formats max, the way forward?

Rest Shaheen from ODIs next year if we have any and play him in T20s so he's ready and firing for the T20 World Cup. Shinwari hasn't been particularly great in T20s.

Naseem for now should be kept to Tests only, maybe introduce him into the ODI team in 2021. I would much rather he be playing first class cricket next year than some JAMODIs or T20s. He'll obviously play in PSLs so can develop some white ball skills there for now.

Age related rest agree on, stress fractures can easily happen. Selection wise, putting your gun bowlers into t20s in the run up to t20 World Cup can work, but might it be easier to just make a clean distinction between playing in various formats?

For sure all play PSL, domestic spectacle that will hopefully go up a gear in next edition.

For sure the mix of bowlers can change, expect Rauf to kick on further and Hasan to come back in LOIs.

I am not sure, if the board can curtail cricketers from turning out for one format or the other, in particular the t20 leagues, given the money involved.
We should look to rotate bowlers in the formats. Really need 4 to 5 fit fast bowlers especially in test matches. Having said, yet again next year we are playing a handful of tests. With Bangladesh not touring, the next test assignment is in summer in England. No danger of burnout due to work load.

until pak pays its test players properly keeping players away from t20 is a pipe dream and unfair. you have to build in some tolerance for t20 leagues cos there's no getting around it, young quicks will play leagues.

Definitely not in favour of curtailment, though the top 2/3 - Shaheens etc hopefully will get category A status, incentivising commitment to national side, rather than leagues. Tricky one for pak players as pay is not even middle level for tests if I’m correct.

Good point on our fixtures, a shame as we do need more tests - there is appetite for it, particularly for watching our young quicks.

Test squad wise, provided he gets experience - I’d look to maybe Rauf, and making it a quartet - like Naseem, his pace/action means that he brings caught/bowled/lbw into play to right handers. Needs games at FC level - perhaps in counties this summer?

It’s definitely a challenge, again not in favour of keeping players away from leagues - but hopefully we get our pay structures correct so that they are not playing in every tournament going - particularly the test bowlers - currently Naseem and Shaheen.

Tests: Abbas, Naseem, Shaheen, Sameen(injury replacement)
ODIs: Naseem, Shaheen, Shinwari, Hasan Ali(injury replacement), Hasnain(injury replacement)
T20s: Shaheen, Haris Rauf, Hasnain, Hasan Ali(injury replacement), Amir(injury replacement)

T20 rauf,shaheen,amir,naseem

Pretty sure Waqar knows the fitness level of these guys and who can play multiple formats.

Ideally, they should be kept away from T20s. But, it's almost impossible in today's world. And esp. for a country like ours where players don't earn a lot anyway.

So far they're doing quite well under Waqar.

T20 WC is coming up so the best possible pacers should be considered.

However, going forward:

Tests: Shaheen, Naseem, Hasan Ali, Abbas, Sameen Gul, Ehsan Adil, Mohammad Hasnain, Arshad Iqbal

ODIs: Amir, Shaheen (With rotation against lower ranked teams and dead rubbers), Naseem (With rotation), Haris Rauf, Amad Butt, Hasan Ali (With Rotation), Mohammad Hasnain (With rotation)

T20s: Amir, Haris Rauf, Hassan Ali(With rotation), Shaheen (Against top teams), Mohammad Hasnain, Amad Butt, Faheem Ashraf and going forward if Musa improves

Just need to manage the workload well as there are quite a few options but the best we have should be managed properly.

Tests - Mir Hamza, Sameen Gul, Naseem Shah, Abbas, Shaheen, Shiwari (Rotate between these 6)
ODI - Shinwari, Naseem, Shaheen, Haris Rauf, Hasnain, Hassan Ali (Rotate between these), Musa still needs major development
T20 - Haris Rauf, Shaheen, Hassan Ali, Faheem Ashraf (Musa once developed, fixed no ball issue and inconsistent line and length worked on)

No Place for Amir or Wahab

Tests-Shaheen,Abbas,Naseem,Hassan,Ehsan
Odi's-Amir, Hassan,Haris,Usman,Shaheen
T-20-Amir,Hassan,Wahab,Hasnain,Haris

Test match fast bowlers:
Main:
Mohammad Abbas
Shaheen Shah Afridi
Naseem Shah
Usman Khan Shinwari
———————————-
Backup:
Hasan Ali
Faheem Ashraf

ODI fast bowlers:
Main:
Mohammad Amir
Shaheen Shah Afridi
Usman Khan Shinwari
Haris Rauf
———————————-
Backup:
Hasan Ali
Faheem Ashraf
Naseem Shah

T20 fast bowlers:
Main:
Mohammad Amir
Shaheen Shah Afridi
Haris Rauf
Faheem Ashraf
———————————
Backup:
Hasan Ali
Mohammad Hasnain
Muhammad Musa Khan

These bowlers should be considered, in this order. Wahab Riaz and Mohammad IrfanÂ’s international careers should be over. Hopefully guys like Rahat Ali and Imran Khan Jr. are kept out of the squads as well.

Things look bleak for Hasan at the moment, but with good performances, he can easily replace Shinwari in the longer formats.

Hasnain and Musa are raw and should only be picked if a main bowler is being rested or is injured. These two guys need to work hard and improve.

Shaheen should be rested for the upcoming T20Is vs Bangladesh. Hasan (if fit) can take his place.

PCB needs to keep to these bowlers. I am not ruling out young talents like Ehsan Adil, Sameen Gul, Akif Javed and Arshad Iqbal, but the above^^^ 8-10 pacers should be the priority and rotated correctly to manage workload.

I have no doubt that a fully fit and maintained Pakistan bowling unit is the best in world cricket.

You need six Test pace bowlers for tours to SENA

So my choices would be:

Tests:
Shaheen Shah Afridi
Naseem Shah
Sameen Gul
Ehsan Adil
Mohammad Hasnain (he needs to be groomed for the long form)
Mohammad Abbas

ODIs and T20i
Mohammad Amir
Haris Rauf
Usman Shinwari
Junaid Khan
Musa Khan

The urgent priority is for a tall third quick. Sameen Gul and Ehsan Adil need to be picked outside Asia.
