Looking at Shan Masood playing an ATG knock made me think of the great test knocks played in England by visiting openers.

Smith, Gavaskar have played some ATG knocks in England

Can you add details of those knocks.

Test hundreds by Pakistan openers in England

200 Mohsin Khan Lord's 1982
124 Mudassar Nazar Edgbaston 1987
205 Aamer Sohail Manchester 1992
176 Saeed Anwar Oval 1996
100*Shan Masood Manchester 2020

100 from 255 deliveries

What an outstanding effort from Shan Masood. Take a bow :14: :14:

This has to be right up there among the best if the decade and among the very best ever in England

Three consecutive 100s for Pakistan (Tests)

Zaheer Abbas (1982-83)
Mudassar Nazar (1983)
Mohammad Yousuf (2006)
Younis Khan (2014)
Misbah-ul-Haq (2014)
Shan Masood (2019-20) *

Mudassar Nazar is the only other batsman to do so opening the batting before Masood.

Shan Masood at 108 is now 2 runs short of the highest test score by a visiting test opener at this venue since 2000s

This is a monumental achievement by Shan Masood.

He's beaten Russel Arnold to the highest test score by a visiting batsman at Old Trafford in this century.

Sanath Jayasuriya 213 at Oval in 1998 is underrated due to Murali 16-fer.

7th on most deliveries faced by an #AsianBloc opener in England

32nd on most deliveries faced by an opener in England ever.

1,6 and 15 deliveries needed to go 3 places up. Come on man.

Greenwich got two double centuries in 1984. This first was the best as WI ran down a daunting target easily by nine wickets.

England must be the most difficult country for visiting test openers. Actually even home openers.

While analysing the statistics, I noticed very few openers name came twice. Very few repetitions.

So most openers really gave just one or two memorable test knocks in England.

Tamim Iqbal got back-to-back centuries in England. His innings at Old Trafford is up there.

Highest scores by visiting openers in England post-1970.

Surprised a bit with that, are we saying Hafeez didn’t score a 100 in England as opener ? Surely he must have scored a few 100s as opener in Australia or South Africa then , for him to have been around as first choice opener in the team for so many years ?

Mohammad Hafeez as a test opener averages following in SENAW :-

28 in England
14 in NZ
11 in South Africa
11 in West Indies
Never opened in Australia

Highest test score of 95

You must be joking surely, you mean that the batsman I’ve admired most in the last 20 years was actually a mediocre performer against abroad against good teams ? No way, if those stats are real then how on earth did Hafeez manage to survive in the team for 15 years or so , and was looked up to as a senior batsman by Pakistan team management ?

Because batting was only one of the many facets of the game he was blessed in.

Of course Greenidge had been playing for Hampshire for years by then, so understood the conditions well.

It’s only recently that overseas openers have started to struggle here, as they play franchise cricket instead of getting CCC jobs to round out their technique.
Another reason why I don’t rate Anderson and Broad as highly as some.

Lack first class cricket exposure has really deteriorated test technique and mentality of many players.

For AsianBloc cricketers, spending some seasons in county circuit was a huge step up always.

Remember how even an old Sachin decided a stint with Lashings would help get back in form in mid 2000s :srt

Gary Kirsten has a couple of truly great test marathons to his name. Doesn't get talked about much.
