Who would be your top 3 greatest ODI captains ever?

A few names to think from...
Dhoni
Ponting
Clive Lloyd
Stephen Fleming
Ranatunga
IK
Kapil Dev
Hansie Cronje
Ganguly
Greame Smith
Steve Waugh
Clarke

Feel free to add more names

My Top 3 would be (in this order):
1) C Lloyd
2) S Waugh
3) MS Dhoni

That's a difficult one. So many great names to choose from.

I'll go with Dhoni, Ponting, Clarke.

My top 3 ll be Khan, Arjuna & MS - why, I 'll write something on that.

Worst 3 - among prominent ones, probably Afridi, WY & AB, though Angelo is catching up fast ...

Most overrated - Steve Waugh & Rickey Ponting; many 'll do better than those two with that team if they can replace the player SWsugh or Panta...,

-) Cronje (very underrated, fixing saga aside)
-) Imran
-) Kapil/Dhoni

Dhoni was one of the worst when it came to using bowlers and as a tactician, though a good batsman with a great batting lineup.

It has to be:
- Imran (true leader who inspired everyone, great tactician)
- Ponting

Third I'm not sure.

Surprised you named them as the most overrated. Would love to hear your views on them.

Also Afridi took a very weak side to WC semi finals only to be defeated by the strongest team and eventual winners of the tournament, and that too not by much. Still he tops your list of the worst captains.

Awaiting your views in detail.

^Ok, not a very weak side really, but yeah not a very good one either.

Disagree. What you're saying there is true, but for tests, not ODIs. Dhoni's strange fields and frequent bowling changes come off in ODIs because he has a knack of putting batsmen off, and in the middle overs, he's absolutely awesome at using spinners properly to choke runs and rush through overs before the opposition even realise what's happening.

In tests, his strange tactics constantly fail, (apart from isolated cases like Lord's in 2014) and he has no idea how to manage fast bowlers' workload.

Afridi taking us to the world cup semi had nothing to do with his captaincy. And it was not a 32 or 64 team tournament that reaching the semi might mean anything.

Imran khan , inspiring leader , this thread is about ODI and Dhoni has great record in ODi,s. Arjuna Ranatunga . i will not select Steve Waugh & Rickey Ponting becouse they had great players and any captain can win a world cup with those players.

Ricky Ponting, Imran Khan and MS Dhoni. In no particular order.

How good was Wasim?

Wasim was great... led the team to 99 final..
pakistan played like a lion under his captaincy. Many good player were introduced under his captaincy. Pakistan odi team was a force at that time.

Dhoni, Ranatunga and Lloyd in no particular order.

Kapil was almost as good as Dhoni but his strategies weren't as effective because the team composition was different. Dhoni is the master of strangling the opponent inch by inch (given a set of certain predefined match conditions, Dhoni knows how precisely to win the match even before the game begins - we saw examples of that in the WC in the matches with Pakistan and SA), you wonder what Dhoni would have achieved if he had a truly world class bowler in his team. Ranatunga was the most astute, his transforming a minnowish SL side to the heights in 96 was as dramatic as Kapil in 83. Lloyd was ruthless and cunning and would not give an inch to the opposition - he knew how to get the best out of the formidable team he had.

Given Ponting led his team to two consecutive undefeated world cups he has to make any top 3

Never knew he was that good. Why didn't he continue as skipper?

LOL, I was writing - Lloyd, Dhoni & Arjuna

are you sure coz i don't think any PPer ever rated his captaincy.

I do rate Wasim as a captain. I think he was an aggressive captain and probably the best from Pakistan in the last 20-25 years. I am not talking about ODI specifically here, just general.

1=Arjuna Ranatunga ... never showed a de-spiriting body language.Very calculated instincts for maneuvering bowling as well as batting resources.

2=Cronje ... had enough resources and had more than enough abilities to manage resources adequately.

3=Dhoni ... never de-spiriting , instinctive in maneuvering bowling options but not for batting options.

Common = All 3 Were , by and large ,very realistic in deciding for what they need to achieve by end of first innings.Very rarely ended up underachieving in an attempt to achieve unrealistics.

ratings on PP don't really account for anything. I personally think he was GREAT. it just sucked he ended it early (twice) due to whatever reasons in the team.

Always felt tactically, Mahela Jayawardene was an awesome captain. Not a great ODI batsman but he had a great instinct of when to bring on which bowler to affect a breakthrough.

Don't know what was really special about Imran or Kapil as on-field captains. They were inspirational leaders, but as captains, I'd have Mahela, Stephen Fleming, Cronje and even Dhoni ahead of them

Yeah.

We hadn't lost a single game up until the SF.

Not only that, we also ended Australia's 34 (IIRC it was 34) WC game winning streak.

Was just going through this thread and saw this. Ross Taylor says hi
