Surprising to see no one mentioned Younis Khan's 200* vs Zimbabwe

He came to bat when score was 21/2 and Pakistan was still trailing by 57 runs. At one point score was 23/3

Remember that epic 20 Amla made against XYZ team in A BCD year ? That also deserves to be here .

Don't be bitter because he's miles better than any batsman you guys can put out. That reminds me, his century in that 45 all out, 99 all out, deserves to be here.

No one mentioned Cook gem against Aussies in 2010/11?

235 and saved the Test.Sad to see how one bad tour can turn around the whole career of that player

1. Amla's 196 Perth (best kock I've seen in Australia in a low scoring pitch at that. Better than 311*, such was the dominance of that inning(s))
2. Faf 108 in Adelaide. Changed the complexion and momentum of the series. Not to forget how he trolled the Aussie media who claimed victory before the test was won. 'We're World no.1', lol that never gets old.
3. Mathews 160 at Headingly a series winning knock always ranks high.
4. KP's 186 in Mumbai, even though the attack left more to be desired
5. G. Smith 101 in Cape Town vs Australia, with both teams having been dismissed under a 100. That was a majestic attacking and match winning hundred. (That was a bizarre Test as the pitch was far from green, I think it was damp on Day 1 and didn't swing as much, as the sun dried the pitch as it was hot in the 1st 3 days, it made the ball to come better towards the bat. There was still enough moisture in the 2nd and 3rd day (but not damp) which explains why the ball swung more on day 2, 3 that day 1)

Not sure about top 5 or not but my personal favourite is Kohli's 119 vs SA in Johannesburg.

Green track, 1st day pitch, Steyn-Philander-Morkel charging in, India struggling 24/2 and incomes Kohli. That innings was filled with some amazing stroke plays in most difficult circumstances. I rate that knock of his as better than the Adelaide one.

Good knock no doubt, but the word green gets thrown around quite a bit here. Any knock in SA seems to have been on a green deck, which is a false premise. That pitch was slow and sluggish for the Highveld.
A few patches of grass doesn't qualify as a green deck.
The pitch against Pakistan in the 3rd Test in Pretoria would be one, even though there wasn't enough moisture for the ball to swing prestigiously. But the grass was probably there to nullify Ajmal and prevent the pitch from cracking too early (if at all). Guess the purpose of that pitch was to not rap the game within 3 days, but to hold through for 5 days.
For a pitch to qualify as green it has to have enough grass cover and moisture coupled with pace.
Two matches come to mind against high quality opposition over the last decade in SA, 1) 07 vs India and 2) 09 vs England both were played at the Wanderers. Those were green decks.

Was this the same match where Du Plessis scored 134 whilst almost pulling off a world record 4th innings chase (and Pujara made 153)?

That pitch was a phatta...

Hmmm. Sounds a different list.

Btw, why YK's knock ahead of Shafiq's during Cape Town partnership?

I feel its was YK's dismissal which triggered the collapse. He got out just before the end of first day, with the ball still new. We only have our tail to bat after that and Shafiq wasn't the man who could shepherd the tail, so he succumbed to the pressure at the start of the next day. Had YK survived that day, we would have posted 80-120 runs more and would have realistic chance of beating SA.

I would say, Sanga's 203 in that Wellington match deserve a mention, better than Watling's 142 in the same match atleast.

Interesting list nonetheless.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Few of the knocks are slipping under the radar.

-) Jayawardene's 180 vs England at Galle
-) Amla's 139 vs SL SSC 2014
-) Samaraweera's ton during SL's Durban victory
-) Amla's 196 at Perth
-) Darren Dravo's double ton at Dunedin 2013

Had YK not scored that century - Shafiq would have perished much earlier...

It was. Some of our Indian friends think that if the ball moves around a little bit, the pitch is obviously a lawn. The ball moved around a bit during that match but nothing that would make Kohli's century ultra-special. Plus, like you mentioned, Faf played a better innings in that game.

A few patches of grass doesn't qualify as a green deck.

Indian batsmen never see a single blade of grass on wickets at home, so seeing even 1 green blade of grass on a wicket elsewhere makes the wicket a green seamer friendly surface.

Domestic wickets are mostly green in India for the past few years, and every Indian batsman has seen a lot of green home wickets, and many of these pitches makes the likes of Vinay Kumar a Malcolm Marshall.

These are some really good shouts.

Yes but both Du Plesis and Pujara scored those runs in 2nd innings when the pitch eased up. Kohli batted on the 1st day fresh pitch and scored 119 when India could only manage 280. On the 2nd day even South Africa with players like Amla, ABDV, Kallis, Smith and Duplesis got all out on 244.
Pitch eased up since then and both team piled runs in 2nd innings. I would suggest you look at the innings in youtube.

that pitch wasn't green though, far from it. Even the swing on day 1 wasn't that much.
Not degrading the knock but it was hardly special. Laxmans two match winning knocks (Joburg 07, Durban 11) were far superior. And they were not even tons

As far as I can recall - both Kohli and Pujara scored hundreds in the 3rd innings..

Kusal Perera 153* has to be amongst Top 5 of last 10 years.

No.1 if he wasn’t given a chance during this knock.

Had the pleasure to watch the match when SL were nine down needing 60 odd to win and Perera batted beautifully. Shielded fernando very well bad his calculations and shot making was spot on.

One of the best Test knock ever played with the tail.
