James Anderson does not make the top 50, he has a record of

Average: 35
5fers: 4

Dale Steyn in comparison

Matches: 35

5fers: 10

That also just in 43 tests. Top 5 test bowler for me.
He's probably only behind McGrath and Marshall as far as All-Time Right Handed Bowlers are concerned. Probably the most effective Non-Asian fast bowler in Asia.

He had a tendency to drop his shoulders when attacked otherwise he could have done even better. But then he had no support from other side like McGrath and Marshall. That does make a huge difference.

Ill-Fit XI was the name of the New Zealand in the 80's. Been the problem with NZ Cricket, one guy carrying the weight.
80's: Hadlee
90's: Crowe
00's: Fleming
10's: B-Mac ( for a short time ), Williamson ( batting ), Boult & Southee ( bowling )

On the other hand, easier for him to hoover up fivefers as there was no quality competition. McGrath had McDermott, Gillespie, Warne, Lee to pinch his wickets. Marshall had Roberts, Holding, Garner, Walsh and Ambrose.

You could look at it both ways. Did he have it easier because he had no help or did he have it harder because he had to therefore carry the entire workload on his shoulders?

You could pick up more wickets, but it's harder to maintain lower average and lower SR because there is no pressure from the other end. Hunting in pair works the best because there is no easy runs from any end and batsmen tend to make mistakes when pressure is applied from the both ends.

Bowling more overs to pick up more wickets is a good assumption if other bowlers are bad, but SR will be also bad in those situations. Hadlee has 48 SR in above list and I have no doubt that he would have enjoyed having a gun bowler on other end as well.

Well, with such a low population it's hard to have many gun players at the same time.

Number of 5-fers, yes, but let's take a minute and see at what rate he was picking wickets without any support like Mcgrath and Marshal had.

Hadlee picked up wickets at avg of 21 and SR of 48 in above list. I tend to agree that he would have had more competition with good support, but then do you agree that his Avg and SR would have been lower as well with good support. It will go hand in hand.

Some of the wickets he played on, during the 80's & especially against Aus, well let's just say they were helpful. I'd put Marshall slightly ahead because of his ability to blast opponents away on any surface, though he was ably supported by other quicks.

I rate Marshall ahead as well. I was not making a case for Marshall being less than Hadlee.

Anderson is world class, bla bla bla.

He's the definition of HTB.

Dale Steyn easily enters into ATG 11 because he destroyed teams in a batting era.
