Seriously can't think of any other sport close to this. No wonder we crap the bed in every Olympics returning with an embarrassing amount of medals each time.

I thought that India does very well in wrestling and hockey was popular.
 
Wouldn't the answer be dependant on your class (middle, upper etc?). I will rank them on the basis of the sports I played as a child in India. Its very different from the actual popularity

Hockey used to be our national sport, and one we won 8 olympic medals in. But the popularity waned in 70s and is only recovering now. In the last decade or so, with the GDP per capita growing, you can see increased interest in spotting activities. will take a generation or two, before we can develop a sporting culture other than cricket.

Don't think so. Even in our hockey league, we see decent-good attendances only in a few select centres, and wrestling is a niche sport popular mainly in some northern areas. India is just not a sporting country. A few individuals are doing well in various fields but on the whole India can't claim to have a strong hold on any major world sport.
 
Cricket, football, tennis, boxing, wrestling, motor sports, hockey, badminton, kabaddi, chess. Might be wrong in the relative ordering.
 
Why do Aussies play and invest so much time and energy following a Sport that has no relevance outside Australia ? I read an article from a critic who blamed the AFL for attracting major chunk of the young athletes and hence Aussies continue to be weak at Football ( Soccer ).

why do Americans invest so much time and energy in sports with little relevance outside USA. NFL and baseball. Even basketball you can argue

Aussie rules is unique to Australia and that what makes it relevant, there are Australians playing football and basketball in the US, soccer in europe and rugby in europe but they are pretty much unknown in Australia.

Aussie rules is one of the top four most attended sports in the world.
 
Cricket - Produced arguably the greatest cricketers ever; Imran Khan and Wasim Akram.

Squash - Produced the greatest squash players anyone has ever seen and by quite a mile; Jahangir Khan and Jansher.

Hockey - Most world cups, some of the greatest hockey players the sport has ever seen.

Kabaddi - Unarguably the best Kabaddi playing country EVER.

We pretty much flunk at other sports with individuals succeeding massively but as a country, we are behind.
 
If you consider the games played by common people

7. Swimming

Anything after that is played by very few
8. Hockey
9. Tennis
10. Shooting
11. Golf

I am in America.. and yes I meant AFL. I guess when we say football we don't even think about soccer anymore.

Honestly... CFL isn't very popular I don't even know why they have it. Just merge it with the States like all the other leagues. However, CFL rules are slightly different though. In CFL the attacking side has three downs to advance 10 yards, whereas in NFL the attacking side has four downs to advance 10 yards.

In terms of participant sports, angling probably ranks higher than some on your list above.

I think it's more to do with gambling and days out to the races. Its not really folllowed with passion such as football, cricket, rugby or even boxing.

Whatever the reasons, those are the facts.

As for angling, you really have to be passionate in order to spend hour after hour sitting in the cold and wet hoping a fish will take the bait. And when you do catch one, you take out the hook and gently put the fish back in the water. Alas, I'm 'hooked' on that passion.

CFL is quite popular in province of Saskatchewan and parts of Alberta(also popular in Hamilton area). In Saskatchewan there seems to be just one sport that dominates and its CFL( they all are die hard Roughriders fan). There are hardly any fans out there who follows baseball/basketball. I spent 3 years in Regina and never met a native who was fan of bluejays or raptors.

I guess it varies from region to region. In Montreal the Habs (hockey), Impact (soccer) and Alouettes (CFL) were the biggest teams and most followed. In Toronto it is the Leafs, Jays, Raptors and TFC.
 
NASCAR is a big one in US but I don't consider it as physical sport.

Yes the OP says top ten sports, I was giving my list based on sports followed but viewership fair enough.

You must have taken the 'bait' to sit in the cold all day to catch a carp.

Yes you're right in regards to sports popularity varies from region to region. I used to go watch roughrider even in -30 weather. During the gameday, the whole town would literally be covered in green. Most retailers out there even allow their employees to wear Roughrider jersey on gameday. Saskatchewan is like Sub Continent of Canada :salute

Most of Pakistani kids and teenagers are more interested in playing computer games these days. Dota is very popular. Before it was Counter Strike.

Shouldnt really be a surprise, I mean I dont have official numbers here but boxing is generally a niche sport in terms of participation everywhere in the world bar maybe Cuba or somewhere. Not many people fancy being hit as something to do lol.

And we've got dozens of Olympic boxing medals, easily our most successful field in that regard.
