Let us analyze which countries have been the most dominant teams across each decade. So, I will start with 2010s and go down till 70s and have a look at the three top teams from each decade. So, here we go: -

2010s

India
South Africa
England

2000s

Australia
South Africa
India

1990s

Australia
South Africa
Pakistan

1980s

For 2010s, the W/L ratio is: -

SA- 2.2
India- 1.7
Eng- 1.3

But India gets the nod for being a superior ODI team with a WC and CT win.

In ODIs for 2010s, the W/L ratio is: -

India- 1.9
SA- 1.68
Eng- 1.4

Which formats are you talking about - clarify.

Top three Test teams:

India
England
Australia

Top three T20 teams:

India
West Indies
England

This has clearly been India’s decade, with England a distant second followed by Australia.

I agree with ODIs/T20s but in tests, South Africa must be ahead.

Between 2012- early 2016 (except three months), SA were ranked no.1 test team(a total of 39 months). And from October 2016, India have been a clear no.1 ranked team. England were no.1 for 12-13 months in 2011 and early '12. Australia were here and there for a few months.

So, in tests, it should be:-

India
SA
England

India have won no T20 world cup and West indies have 2 in this decade, yet India is above WI?

England have won in Australia, India and South Africa in this decade. South Africa haven’t won in India and that is why I picked England ahead of Australia and South Africa.

England have been poor against Pakistan, but performances against Pakistan - good or bad - have negligible significance in this era.

You can make a strong case for South Africa over Australia in Tests, but South Africa have had some harrowing lows. Australia would never lose at home to a team like Sri Lanka even at their lowest ebb.

Trophies alone aren’t enough. West Indies have been awful outside the two WT20s in 2012 and 2016. However, it is because of those titles that I have put them at #2. Take those out and they won’t even be in the top 6.

Well, England have worst performances at home compared to SA, they have lost to Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Windies. South Africa never loses to Kiwis, Pakistan or Windies at home.

If you look at ICC ranking no.1 ranked team month-wise in this decade, it is:-

India- 56
SA- 39
Eng- 12
Aus- 9
Pak- 2

SA definitely for the fact that they were no.1 ranked for 39 months in this decade should be no.2. They have seen their worst in the past two years but think that's not enough to put them behind either Australia or England.

But performance in tournaments do matter more. WI have played their main team in wc20 and have performed the best.

And Srilanka have been better T20 team than England for majority of this decade.

So my t20i ranking for 10's is

West Indies
Srilanka
India

Back to thread, this is about decade wise comparison till 1970. Any changes or suggestions to any other decade is welcomed as well and this also would help us analyzing the ranking of teams if we start from 70s onwards.

Trophies only matter when it comes to T20I.

Bilateral T20 or even ranking is a joke. My opinion is different, you have your own way of judging a team which is perfectly okay.

Someone is mentioning England as a top three test team😂😂

Series wins in Australia, India and South Africa in one decade is the stuff of gods. How many teams in history have done it?

I think winning in Australia, India and South Africa in one decade compensates for weak performances against the lower sides. However, I can see why someone would choose South Africa ahead of them.

I would definitely pick England ahead of Australia because latter has only been able to win a test series in SA but couldn't achieve as such in India or England while England have won in all three countries despite much weaker performances at home. Even Australia's win in SA have been overpowered by South Africa's consecutive series wins in Australia.

I think in 70s, Australia and Windies both were better than England.Australia were no.1 in the first half and Windies took it halfway and dominated till the early 90s.
