What you have is 2 amazing players in your batting order who usually play well, along with a lot of players that are untrustworthy which means that it is harder to predict how they are going to perform - but how is that different to most teams?

India - Dravid and Sehwag + crap
England - Trescothick and Pietersen + crap
WI - Sarwan and Lara + crap
SL - Sangakarra and Jayawardene + crap

etc. The only team that doesnt suffer this problem is Australia, they are clearly the no.1 team for a reason.

Give Butt a break, i know he is begging for it deep down inside.

I just realized something. The Northants are brilliant. They know the Pakistani bowling is struggling, so they declare extremely early on purpose!

THink about, why would anyone ever declare on 269/3!!!, even if it is a 4 day match. They see some of the Pak bowlers getting into the groove, and they declare.

Dropping an opening pair because of one bad test is not the right thing to do. Knee jerk reactions are not required right now and will do more harm than good.
