Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has hit out at protests by truckers around the country as "unacceptable".

Speaking to parliament in Ottawa, he defended the Covid restrictions that have prompted truckers to converge on the nation's capital.

Ottawa police meanwhile warned protesters could be arrested, and a conviction might cost them their jobs.

The protests in Ottawa and at two Canada-US border crossings have been going on for two weeks.

"Blockages, illegal demonstrations are unacceptable, and are negatively impacting businesses and manufacturers," Mr Trudeau said on Wednesday.

"We must do everything to bring them to an end."

He said the protesters are "trying to blockade our economy, our democracy and our fellow citizens' daily lives".

"It has to stop."

Mr Trudeau returned to parliament on Monday following a week-long isolation after he caught coronavirus.

Since Monday drivers have been blocking the largest international suspension bridge in the world at a border crossing that makes up around a quarter of US-Canada trade.

The closure of the Ambassador Bridge by about 100 protesters in their big rigs has been denounced by trade groups. The span connects Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, Michigan.

Car manufacturers in the region say that they have had to reduce production and shift hours due to parts shortages caused by the ongoing blockade. Industry experts say that it could result in company layoffs and increase the prices that consumers pay for vehicles.

The world's biggest manufacturer, Toyota, has halted production at three factories in Ontario, saying no more vehicles will be produced there this week.

The White House has called for an end to the protests saying they risk hurting the car industry and US agricultural exports.

About 400 trucks remain in central Ottawa after arriving there late last month. Police said on Wednesday the protesters could be charged with "mischief to property" because they were inhibiting local residents' "lawful use, enjoyment and operation of their property".

Ottawa police warned that "anyone blocking streets or assisting others in the blocking of streets may be committing a criminal offence".

They added that a criminal conviction could result in seizure of their vehicles, and an inability to enter the US. The police force also hiked penalties for noise, engine idling and other infractions in the city to C$1,000 ($790, £585) per offence.

The truckers are protesting against a rule requiring truckers entering Canada to be fully immunised against coronavirus. The demonstrators have also voiced opposition to Covid passports and mask mandates.

Mr Trudeau has refused to budge on federal Covid measures, even as provinces begin lifting their restrictions.

Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Prince Edward Island have all announced plans to lift most mitigation measures this month. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are also easing some restrictions.

On Tuesday, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said pandemic-related rules had "disrupted and even destroyed livelihoods" in the province.

In Coutts, Alberta, on the border with the US state of Montana, RCMP officers began issuing tickets on Wednesday to remove dozens of trucks that have been blocking that international crossing for about two weeks. No arrests have been reported, and authorities said that enforcement would take place in "stages" beginning with information gathering.

"Really it's going to be up to them," said RCMP Superintendent Roberta McKale, calling on them to move on their own.

"Up until this point it's been us asking them and this afternoon we don't have an option, we're going to have to use our enforcement options to have that happen."

Mr Trudeau has faced criticism from within his own party over his handling of the protests, which come as infections from the Omicron variant decline significantly.

Quebec MP Joël Lightbound, a fellow Liberal, criticised the prime minister this week for "demonising" groups that disagree with Covid mandates.

"It's becoming harder and harder to know when public health stops and where politics begins," Mr Lightbound said. "It's time to stop dividing Canadians and pitting one part of the population against another."

Interim Conservative leader Candice Bergen accused Mr Trudeau on Wednesday of wanting a "permanent pandemic".

"The prime minister needs to put his ego aside," she said. "He needs to do what's right for the country. He needs to to end the mandates. He needs to end the restrictions."

At a news conference on Wednesday, organisers of the Freedom Convoy said protesters were "upbeat". They added that the truckers were resting so as to be "re-energised" for weekend protests, which they likened to a "festival".

Reacting to the police warning, a lawyer for the protesters maintained in a statement that their actions were lawful.

"Noisy, inconvenient or unwanted protests are protected and must be facilitated," the lawyer said.

The protesters have raised $7.8m on website GiveSendGo as of Wednesday after GoFundMe cancelled their fundraiser and began refunding some $10m in donations.

Republican officials in at least two US states - Texas and Missouri - have opened investigations into GoFundMe over the decision.

The protests in Canada have inspired similar events around the world from Australia and New Zealand to France. Online chatter is building for a trucker protest in Washington DC.

FULLY support the Truckers.

Oooohhh Karma is a bad bad thing, young Trudeau is finding out....

I hope the Canadian Khalistanis are supporting the truckers. :misbah4

But Trudeau was supporting protests in another country. Now protests and blockades are a bad thing?

Heard he has run away to a safe location?

June 2020 and Trudeau himself was protesting.

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it was important for him to attend a Black Lives Matter protest on Parliament Hill Friday, despite public health advice he has personally delivered to Canadians, about avoiding large groups to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

If there was ever a Karma...this is it. No wonder #Karma was trending whole day yesterday in India.

Trudeau was adding fuel to fire during Indian farmer protest and encouraging the road blockades. Now that it is happening in his own country, he has gone hiding. Hahaha

Long may this protest continue.

Whole of Punjab was protesting, almost every Punjabi not just in North America but almost every corner of the world was protesting.

Majority of the non-racist were protesting against racism.

90% of the truckers in Canada are vaccinated - this protest is from those 10% unvaccinated truckers.

What karma are you all talking about? Just throwing words because he went against the Emperor of Hindutva.

LOL

I am told that a fair number of truckers in Canada are sikhs of Indian origin. There may be Khalistan supporters among them.

LOL

Errr the truckers had Ottawa on its knees with the road blocks and protests. Little Trudeau disappeared for a while maybe even onto hiding....

So much from the concerned CANNUCK leader that commented on the Indian farmer protest, a small issue occurs in his country and he became a magician for a while, he just disappeared :))) ..

KARMA.....

So the voices of the minority don’t matter?

It is quite understandable whenever the Emperor of Hindutva is criticized his followers type up stuff that a reader read it and then want to ask why do some people waste oxygen ? Hopefully one day there will be a cure for it, who knows some Indian CEO may find it after leaving Indian, emphasize on "after leaving India".

Lets do this.

So Indians are enjoying it as a defeat for Trudeau (not that I care, not a Canadian) and it is quite evident if you go by the comments.

Make it seem as if all of the Canadians are protesting and almost every Trucker is unvaccinated - 90% are vaccinated - Protest started because those 10% had to quarantine after crossing the land border with the US.

Also Indians, equating this protest to the protest in Punjab - at times some Indian believe the world will just believe anything they'd type up - too adorable, anyways, All of Punjab and almost every Punjabi from every corner of the world were protesting.

Majority in Ottawa do not want the 10% and since on daily basis we get a lecture on democracy from our Indian friends who is in the majority in that province and that city? :)

On Trudeau hiding, well he was tested positive, there is no evidence that he wasn't unless Modi can provide one, I am yet to see it.

Indians will hate forever on anyone who even remarks anything negative about them, the IPL, Bollywood or Kashmir.

As for this protest, its amazing to see! Its not just the truckers who are not vaccinated, many others who are vaccinated are joining them because forcing someone to take any vaccine is pathetic, against basic human rights and against the law(int) according to some lawyers.

Justin is running away instead of addressing their concerns. He claims to be a liberal but wants to force people to take a vaccine? lol. Canada needs a decent leader, not this fake liberal in charge.

Disagree, more than 75% of the population is fully vaccinate.

Ontario is up and open, schools are in person and so are the restaurants.

Almost everything is back to normal.

Majority of the people are tired because truckers are making it harder on ordinary citizens.

That protest was nothing if one were to go by the numbers, the difference is, people in Canada supported their right to protest but do not support them taking it this far and hindering daily way of living.

Canada has handled Covid quite well under his leadership - I did not see him declaring Canada covid free and held mass political rallies just before Delta variant strike.

Thanks for disagreeing but you've evaded the key points. Lets try again in a simpler format.

1. Many of the protestors are vaccinated.

2. They are protesting the right to choose vaccines/medication.

This makes sense because vaccine efaccy is only a few months. Natural immunity is 27 more effective.

A. Its wrong to force anyone to take any medication or vaccine.

B. It makes no sense either.

C. Do you want everyone forced vaccinated?

Yea but not the majority of them, those protesting had many who were vaccinated and most of the mandates were due to expired in week or two anyways.

I do not believe in forced vaccination but government should and must be allow to practice mandates to protect the general population and if the majority is vaccinated then that mandate had thumbs up from the general population.

Less and less are having the booster. In 12 months the majority will not be vaccinated around the world .

You are contradicting yourself in the same sentence. Do you agree with mandates or not? Yes or no will do.

Thats a very long answer for “minority voices don’t matter”.

These truckers made problems in Ottawa.

Couldn't do much in Toronto thankfully.

I am all for peaceful and lawful protests but they shouldn't block important roads. That goes for all protesters (not just these truckers).

Ontario court freezes access to donations for truckers' protest from GiveSendGo

OTTAWA - The Ontario government says it has successfully petitioned a court to freeze access to millions of dollars donated through online fundraising platform GiveSendGo to the convoy protesting COVID-19 restrictions in Ottawa and at several border crossings.

The province obtained an order from the Superior Court of Justice that prohibits anyone from distributing donations made through the website's “Freedom Convoy 2022” and “Adopt-a-Trucker” campaign pages, said a spokeswoman for Premier Doug Ford.

Ivana Yelich said the order binding “any and all parties with possession or control over these donations” was issuedThursday afternoon. She cited a section of the Criminal Code that allows the attorney general to apply for a restraint order against any “offence-related property.”

Hundreds of semi-trucks rolled into downtown Ottawa two weeks ago to protest COVID-19 vaccine mandates and health restrictions and now trucks are also blockading border crossings in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario.

Donors initially raised more than $10 million through GoFundMe, which announced last Friday it was pulling the plug on the campaign and that the money would be refunded. The site said it initially believed the demonstration was going to be peaceful, but withdrew its support after police and local leaders raised concerns it had become an “occupation.”

Convoy organizers quickly set up new campaigns on Christian fundraising site GiveSendGo. As of Thursday, “Freedom Convoy 2022” had raised $US8.4 million and “Adopt-a-Trucker” had amassed more than $686,000.

The crowdfunding site did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Organizers have also touted the cryptocurrency Bitcoin as another way to generate funds for protesters and avoid other potential fundraising shutdowns, including during a news conference that was livestreamed to supporters on Wednesday.

Ontario's move to freeze access to the donations comes the same day as an all-party House of Commons committee of MPs heard testimony from deputy directors of Canada's financial intelligence hub about how it doesn't cover crowdfunding sites like GoFundMe.

Fintrac has a mandate to identify money linked to terrorist financing and money laundering from reports it receives each year from entities including banks, insurance companies, money service businesses and casinos.

It doesn't investigate potential crimes or stop money from flowing, but passes its intelligence onto police.

Fintrac deputy director Barry MacKillop testified that it doesn't regulate crowdfunding sites like GoFundMe and so wouldn't receive from it reports of suspicious transactions.

The payment services that users rely on to send money to crowdfunding campaigns, like PayPal, and the banks that in turn deposit the cash do fall under is reporting requirements, the MPs heard.

“The intersection with the crowdfunding platforms and our financial institutions is a must in order to disperse the money,” he said.

“If the money were going through a Canadian bank, for example, and directed to the Proud Boys - they're a listed terrorist organization. That money would be stopped by the bank.”

Annette Ryan, another deputy director at Fintrac, testified this gives them a line of sight into the crowdfunding sector.

At the outset, MacKillop said Fintrac doesn't discuss intelligence disclosures made to police. But when it comes to the protest unfolding in Ottawa, he said there hasn't been an upswing in suspicious transactions being reported.

“We have not seen a spike,” he said.

Among one of the questions MPs had about the millions being generated for protesters through crowdfunding sites was the appearance funds were being sent anonymously.

MacKillop says while the public may not get to see who is making donations, that doesn't make them anonymous.

He pointed out donors must use credit cards to send money and the fact that GoFundMe offered up refunds after it shut down the protesters' campaign demonstrates it has the information it needs to identify an individual.

Earlier Thursday, NDP MP Alistair MacGregor announced the committee would hear directly from representatives from GoFundMe about what measures it has in place to prevent the funding of extremism.

MacGregor brought forward the motion and said they will appear March 3.

Trudeau swimming under extreme pump right now. Major land border crossings with the USA have been blocked by trucks across the country. Billions of dollars of trade sitting idle. Canada's capital Ottawa has been paralyzed by trucks. He has no option but to use force or give into demands. Interesting 2 weeks ahead.

Not surprising as soon as Alberta and Manitoba were hit with it they withdrew their support, can't anger their voter base.

Yet they would be lining up like crazy if Canada would offer them immigration.

LOL Trudeau,, this is so hilarious...

Leading a nation is not for ppl like Trudeau, Raul Puppu Gandhi etc, leave that to the men, its not for boys...

Like you Pakistanis?

I believe I may have seen you expressing concern on the Farmer's protest thread ? but you don't seem to have any comments on the issue at hand on this thread...

In all seriousness it is heart breaking to see, no comments (as far as I know) from:

Greta Thunberg,
Rhianna,
Mia Khalifa,

Its so sad they only care about the farmers but don't care about the truckers :(...

Yes a lot of Pakistanis would. But unlike you guys we are not blind nationalists.

Yes a lot of Pakistanis would. But unlike you guys we are not blind nationalists.

This is your problem, you don't understand Indian politics.

BJP currently has no opposition, if the country is given to a child like Raul Puppu, that will be the end of as we know it. He will given his uncle Imran, Indian Kashmir for a box of poppins and Arunachal Pradesh to his Daddy Xi for a box of Cadbury Dairy milk, that's how dumb he is...

Lot of Indians are not nationalist but they choose BJP because the country will be in better hands instead of the child mentioned above that happens to be the leader of the main opposition, it is just the ground reality at the moment...

You are contradicting yourself in the same sentence. Do you agree with mandates or not? Yes or no will do.

I agree with mandates.

Another point need to be highlighted, the US government has now made it mandatory for truckers from Canada to be fully vaccinated to enter the US.

This protest has lost the steam ( initially sounded entertaining for the news grab and new heading) and has no significant backing remaining from the masses as restrictions had been lifted and almost 80% are fully vaccinated. - why would 80% protest for something when there isn't any restriction on them?

There is no mandate on booster so that is irrelevant.

Don't want to demean but have you seen the conditions of Indian farmers? Compare them to the first world residents of Canada or even Australia and you will have answer to your question.

Is this a serious comment or if every Hindutva thinks like that you then why is anyone wasting time here debating with the ilks of you?

That is because all of them probably support the idea of Vaccines - lol.

As said before, whenever the Emperor of Hindutva is criticized you all unwillingly type up some of the dumbest replies.

:facepalm

This.

Liberalism has become a joke in the West.

Liberalism is about freedom and choice, but no, lets enforce a view on others and if they do not accept then lets start calling them names and imprison them!

Democracy is a sham too.

In this case truckers are protesting, well within their rights, and instead of refusing to mandate the vaccine, the government is calling the protest a problem.

The only reason why Indians are up in arms about this is because Canada is home to the biggest Sikh population outside of India, and Indians in India are left wondering why JT was protesting against Hindutva policies against Sikh farmers.

India is by far the most insecure nation.

Don't want to demean but have you seen the conditions of Indian farmers? Compare them to the first world residents of Canada or even Australia and you will have answer to your question.

So are you saying the rules of discussing a struggle shouldn't be discussed due to the geography ? despite truckers losing wages, fighting out in the cold etc ?

He has not. He fled India for Australia.

Farmer protests are different to trucker protests, clearly, but the crux of the issue is Indians feel betrayed because JT supported Indian farmers, AND Sikh community in Canada.

Wrong, went to US, Canada and then AUS

Trudeau's initial disappearance act is what's caused the stir in my opinion. Even if he 'supposedly' had covid he could have made a comment on the trucker issue via social media or video etc but he just became a magician and Poof !!!! vanished.. So much for a leader trying to lecture other countries about their internal issues.

bold..

Not sure why some people are obsessed with India on this thread. To me, this is about liberal hypocrisy. When some BLM protesters were looting Nike stores and burning down cities a couple of years ago, JT was taking the knee in solidarity. When he has working class people protesting against his policies, he’s calling them Nazis and what not.

I can assure you the farmer of Punjab/Haryana , specially the segment that was leading the protest are uber rich. They have a control /monopoly on the system and that is why they were in arms against the changes as that would have created competition for them and they had to pay more money to the real farmers who actually toil on the field.

The farmers of Punjab, Haryana and South India are actually rich. The poorer section is in UP, Bihar, Bengal and North Maharashtra.

Its ironic, Modi's farm law's were meant to help the very poor farmers (and population in general) you are talking about. The middlemen and the elite farmers in the upper circle are the one which forced the hand for the laws to be repelled.

Hate Modi as much as you want, no one in their right mind can rationally criticize the farm laws, if they ever read it without prejudice. JT supporting the farmer protests was pure politics to support his constituency.

BREAKING: Fines for non-compliances 'will be severe' Ford said, with a maximum penalty of $100,000 and up to one year imprisonment.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford declares state of emergency over trucker blockades

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has declared a state of emergency in the province as the truckers' freedom convoy protests continue, both in Ottawa and at various points along the Canada/U.S. border.

Ford made the announcement during a press conference Friday, stating that he will convene cabinet and “use legal authorities to urgently enact orders” that will protect international border crossings as well as the 400-series highways, airports, bridges, ports and railways in the province.

The premier called the protests in Ottawa an illegal "siege" and an "occupation" and promised swift action to end all blockades, particularly those blocking the flow of goods across the border.

Fines for non-compliances "will be severe" Ford said, with a maximum penalty of $100,000 and up to one year imprisonment.

“I will convene Cabinet to use legal authorities to urgently enact orders that will make crystal clear it is illegal and punishable to block and impede the movement of goods, people and services along critical infrastructure,” the premier said.

An application for an injunction is also set to be heard by the Ontario Superior Court for an order that would prevent protesters from blocking the Ambassador Bridge.

Ford prefaced his announcement by stating that accelerated plans to lift government COVID measures in the province are underway — but stressed that such a decision has "nothing to do" with the ongoing protests.

Pakistani posters have to realize that majority Indian posters hate on JT n Canada simply because he appeases to Sikhs. JT gains nothing from appeasing Hindututva nationalists but he fully knows Sikhs are huge vote bank who love Canada like motherland.

India in recent years has become very intolerant, any foreign criticism is seen as meddling into their internal affairs. Indian trolls don't even spare kids Greta and Malala. Malala was all good till she opposed Taliban but as soon as she spoke on Kashmir she became enemy number 1. Any protest is stereotyped and dehumanized, like painting every Sikh protestor as Khalistani like our resident Indian poster gani999 does. Indians are very vindictive.

You have to see recent controversy of Muslim woman on sale in India, the guy was tweeting from Twitter handle with fake Sikh name, just to incite hatred.

Sikhs are constantly reminded of atrocities of Mughal Empire going back 400 years and that Sikhs are Hindu's. Atrocities of 1984 are swept under carpet.

Sikhism is a monotheistic faith and shuns rituals and idol worshipping. Sikhs and Muslims coming to each others support in recent years protests has irked nationalist BJP. Dislike for Modi is as rampant among Sikhs as it's among Muslims.

Chinese and Indian trolls are worst on Internet.

<b>Trucker protests: Ontario calls state of emergency</b>

Ontario has declared a state of emergency in response to two weeks of protests against Covid restrictions.

The order came as demonstrations continue to shut down the Ambassador Bridge, a vital US-Canada trade link.

Blocking crucial infrastructure would be made "illegal" under the order, punishable by up to a year in jail and C$100,000 ($79,000; £58,000) in fines.

On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with US President Joe Biden about the border blockades.

The pair discussed their "shared challenges at the border", Mr Trudeau said, with the prime minister promising quick action to resume trade.

Addressing Canadians on Friday, Mr Trudeau applauded Ontario's measure and said that "everything is on the table" to ensure the demonstrations are brought to an end.

"It is it is time to go home," he said. "The consequences are becoming more and more severe."

Mr Trudeau insisted that the "unlawful activity" would end, but said military intervention has not yet been seriously considered.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the province's emergency order would apply to anyone impeding the movement of goods, people and services along international border crossings, airports, ports and major highways.

The Canadian province will also provide additional authority so that the personal and commercial licences of protesters who do not comply may be cancelled.

"There will be consequences, and they will be severe," Mr Ford, a Conservative, said on Friday morning.

"To those who have attempted to disrupt our way of life by targeting our lifeline for food, fuel and goods across our borders, to those trying to force a political agenda through disruption, intimidation and chaos, my message to you is this," Mr Ford said.

"Your right to make a political statement does not outweigh the right of hundreds of thousands of workers to earn their living."

The country-wide protests against Covid-19 vaccine mandates are poised to enter their third weekend.

A "Freedom Convoy" was organised last month in response to the introduction of a new rule that all truckers must be vaccinated to cross the US-Canada border, or quarantine upon their return.

The protest has since grown into a broader challenge to all Covid health restrictions.

The vast majority of Canadian truckers are vaccinated and trucking associations have distanced themselves from the protests, noting most drivers are still working.

Thousands of demonstrators have congregated in central Ottawa, others have blocked the Ambassador Bridge and a handful of other border crossings.

Authorities have warned members of the public to avoid Emerson, a small border town in Manitoba, where trucks and farm equipment are currently clogging the US border.

The trade disruption has been estimated to cost some C$380m ($300m; £221m) each day.

Smaller protests have been held in Toronto and Quebec City, as well as near provincial legislatures in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia.

The mayors of Ontario's biggest cities issued a joint statement on Monday, condemning the "irresponsible and damaging" actions of the protesters, calling for all governments to bring the demonstrations to a peaceful end.

US officials have urged Canada's government to use its federal powers to end the blockade - especially of the Ambassador Bridge - which has already hit the automobile industry either side of the border.

The White House said this week that US officials had been engaged with their Canadian counterparts to help resume trade along the border.

Premier Ford's Friday announcement marks the first state of emergency in the province since April, when Ontario implemented its third emergency order over Covid-19 transmission.

In recent days Mr Ford had faced criticism for not doing more to stop the convoy blockade in Ottawa.

And while he repeatedly denounced the weeks-long demonstration on Friday, he also indicated the province would be moving to lift existing Covid-19 restrictions, including the vaccine "passport" system.

This system requires proof of vaccination to enter indoor public settings like gyms and restaurants.

Police have started to clear a blockade of the main crossing between Canada and the United States.

After days of protests by truckers against Covid rules at the Ambassador Bridge in Ontario, officers urged them to heed an injunction against the demonstration.

The vital trade route links Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan.

Truckers' protests against Covid vaccine mandates are also ongoing at other border crossings and in Ottawa.

The self-styled "Freedom Convoy" movement was started by Canadian truckers opposed to a vaccinate-or-quarantine order for drivers crossing the border.

Friday's court order against the blockade was filed by the city of Windsor and the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association, which argued that it was losing as much as $50m ($39m; £29m) per day because of the convoy.

Following the injunction, Windsor Police put out a statement to "make demonstrators clearly aware that it is a criminal offence" to block the border crossing. The police added that a criminal conviction could lead to the seizure of vehicles and the inability to enter the US.

But hours later, crowds of people waving Canadian flags flouted the order and continued to occupy the bridge.

Police added on Saturday: "We urge all demonstrators to act lawfully [and] peacefully. Commuters are still being asked to avoid the areas affected by the demonstrations at this time."

Is Trudeau losing his fight against truckers?

Hundreds of other protesters continue to demonstrate in the centre of Ottawa, the nation's capital. Two other border crossings with the US are also being blocked by anti vaccine mandate protesters.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with US President Joe Biden about the border blockades on Friday.

The week-long disruption to the bridge, which accounts for roughly 25% of US-Canada annual trade estimated to be worth $1.7bn (£1.2bn) a day, rocked the car manufacturing industry.

General Motors, Ford, Toyota and Honda plants have been forced to halt production and cancel work shifts due to parts shortages caused by the blockade.

<b>Canada bridge protesters cleared by police after a week of disruption</b>

Police have cleared the remaining protesters blocking a key bridge between Canada and the United States, after a week of disruption.

Canada's protests against Covid vaccine certification to cross the border have paralysed trade across the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, Ontario.

A judge issued an order on Friday to break up the protest, but dozens of demonstrators remained in defiance.

Police have now cleared the road, though the bridge remains closed.

In a statement, police said Sunday's action resulted in over a dozen arrests on a charge of mischief - which refers to damage or interference with property.

Multiple vehicles were also seized, police said, none of the arrests became violent.

The clearing effort first began on Saturday morning, when many of the vehicles involved left peacefully on police orders.

But as news of the police action spread, more protesters turned up, temporarily swelling the crowd.

But by Sunday morning, only a few dozen people remained, and police resumed their operation.

Within hours, only a small number of stragglers remained on the sidelines, though police vehicles, rather than protesters, continue to block off the road to the Ambassador Bridge.

Windsor police warned people to avoid the area of the bridge, tweeting: "Enforcement will continue in the demonstration area and there will be zero tolerance for illegal activity."

Officials say they hope to reopen the bridge later on Sunday.

<b>Canada protests: Police push back demonstrators in Ottawa</b>

Police in Canada's capital, Ottawa, are moving closer to the hub of an anti-vaccine mandate protest that has gripped the city for three weeks.

More than 140 people have been arrested and dozens of vehicles seized as officers, some on horseback, continued the second day of a massive crackdown.

Some protesters who resisted were thrown to the ground and had their hands zip-tied behind their backs.

Police have also accused protesters of launching gas canisters at officers.

Officers advanced into more streets on Saturday - some headed for the heart of the protest zone, next to Parliament Hill.

It is one of the biggest police operations in Canada's history.

More than 100 protesters were arrested on Friday and police said they had detained 47 more on Saturday.

Ottawa Police confirmed on Twitter they had used pepper spray on some protesters, saying: "You will have seen officers use a chemical irritant in an effort to stop the assaultive behaviour and for officer safety."

The crackdown on the self-styled Freedom Convoy began on Friday morning, when hundreds of police, some holding riot batons, descended into the protesters' encampment in downtown Ottawa.

But some protesters refused to leave, forming a line in front of approaching officers, linking arms and singing the national anthem, O Canada.

"PROTESTORS: We told you to leave," Ottawa Police tweeted. "We gave you time to leave. We were slow and methodical, yet you were assaultive and aggressive with officers and the horses.

"Based on your behaviour, we are responding by including helmets and batons for our safety."

Ottawa police set up almost 100 police check-points around the main protest site as well as a large business and residential district in the city centre to prevent more protesters from entering the area.

Police have towed away 38 vehicles since Friday.

"We will work day and night until this is completed," Ottawa's interim police chief Steve Bell said.

Police said some of those arrested had been wearing body armour and carrying fireworks and smoke grenades.

And they criticised people for bringing children to the protest, saying anyone bringing a minor to an illegal protest site could be jailed for five years or fined.

On Friday, authorities also reported a "concerted effort" to flood the city's 911 and non-emergency phone lines.

Ottawa police described similar tactics last week, saying a gush of US-based phone calls to local emergency numbers nearly crashed the city's crisis response system.

Two leaders of the trucker convoy were scheduled to appear in court on Friday. Tamara Lich and Chris Barber were both charged with mischief. Mr Barber also faces an obstruction charge.

What began in late January as a truck convoy headed to Ottawa to oppose a vaccine mandate for truckers crossing the US-Canada border grew into a broader opposition to pandemic restrictions and Mr Trudeau's government, with supporting protests across the country.

Canada's House of Commons and Senate cancelled Friday sittings because of police action surrounding the parliament buildings.

Parliamentarians were scheduled to debate the decision by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to invoke a never-before-used emergencies law.

The law grants government added powers in times of crisis and has been used to impose bans on public assembly in some areas of Ottawa and has prohibited travel to the protest zone, and bringing children to the area among other measures.

Conservative interim leader Candice Bergen called on Twitter for MPs to return to Parliament on Saturday to stop the "overreach" - referring to Mr Trudeau's order.

Authorities last weekend cleared the most economically damaging blockade - a bridge linking Windsor, Ontario, with the US state of Michigan.

Trucker protests at other border crossings in Coutts, Alberta, and Emerson, Manitoba, ended this week.

Many Ottawa residents have expressed frustration at local police, saying not enough was done to clear the protest, which has paralysed parts of the city around parliament and affected local businesses.

The police chief resigned earlier this week over his handling of the demonstration.

On Thursday, an Ontario Superior Court Judge approved a court order freezing millions of dollars - including some held in crypto-currency - raised from around the world to support the protests.

The freeze is part of a class-action lawsuit filed by residents and business owners in Ottawa against protest organisers and participants, as well as against all those who donated funds after 4 February.

Paul Champ, the lawyer for the plaintiffs told the BBC that this order was the "first of its kind" in Canada. The BBC has contacted a lawyer representing the protesters for comment.

The government has also begun freezing bank accounts linked to the protests under the temporary emergency measures.
