Tunisia has overturned a law that banned women from marrying non-Muslims.

A spokeswoman for President Beji Caid Essebsi made the announcement and congratulated women on gaining "the freedom to choose one's spouse".

Until now, a non-Muslim man who wished to marry a Tunisian Muslim woman had to convert to Islam and submit a certificate of his conversion as proof.

Tunisia, which is 99% Muslim, is viewed as one of the most progressive Arab countries in terms of women's rights.

The new law comes after President Essebsi pushed for the lifting of the marriage restriction decree that was put in place in 1973.

He said in a speech last month, during celebrations of the National Women's day, that the marriage law was "an obstacle to the freedom of choice of the spouse".

The restriction was also seen as violating Tunisia's constitution which was adopted in 2014 in the wake of the Arab Spring revolution.

Welcome to the 1960s. Second or third Muslim majority country to make it that far so a bit of a pioneer too. We too are on our way there, only three or four hundred years to go.

they probably just realised they don't want to be stuck in 600 BC thats all.

Well good luck explaining that to Allah SWT. When Islam has made it quite clear on the matter.

I do realise there is a shortage of Muslim bachelors, but they need to introduce a ban on muslim men marrying non-muslim women to balance the equation and not allow haram.

desi liberal over the Internet alert :))

you do realize that it has been clearly mentioned in Islam that women cannot marry non muslims

Sometimes I see the human race and all I can conjure is the word Stupidity......

2017 and we're still debating on whether someone should have the right to choose his/her partner or not

Yes I'm aware of the misogynistic nature of Islamic law which is why I'm opposed to it. You forget that I was a Muslim for 24 years and a pretty stringent one at that for 10 to 15 of those years.

I just don't get it.... The rules are what they are... if you don't want to follow Islam then just leave it.

What they ought to do is allow people to leave Islam rather than doing things through the back door.

If the figures are correct in the OP article, then 99% of the population are Muslim anyway so in practical terms it's probably not going to have much impact, which makes me think it's a cosmetic change rather than a meaningful one.

You do realize that even if what you say is true then it is still not your right to impose a law prohibiting others from marrying people of other religion. If it is against the "law" of allah then those people will directly answer to the allah, you or the state don't have any right or business to impose restrictions on a person's decision to marry someone.

Isn't that punishable by death in a lot of Islamic countries?

If only it was as easy as you make it sound :srini

The people who want to marry non Muslims clearly have no affinity for rules of Islam then really why are you forcing these people into a pretence.... just let them leave. Give them the freedom to leave, that's what they are really after.

This is indeed correct. If someone wants to leave, let them.leave. If god (by whichever name we may pray to him) wabted slaces he wouldnit give humans free will.

yes man you love reminding everyone all the time that you are an ex muslim but you don't understand that nobody cares :))

i suggest you save yourself the trouble and make it your signature

well it does not matter if you think they are backward laws or barbaric laws. the fact is that it is an islamic country and the laws should be imposed.

other wise pakistan should declare in its constitution that it is a secular country

pakistan is an islamic country and it imposes islamic laws. nothing wrong with that.

It becomes pertinent to mention when your entire line of reasoning is based around "it's Islamic law and therefore correct". It absolutely does matter what I, as a voter and citizen, think and the fact that it's an Islamic country is a disgrace in and off itself that needs be rectified. I agree that Pakistan should declare itself a secular state, Islam as a pretty rubbish system of governance and the legal side in particular is an absolute joke. Tunisia did the right thing here putting human rights above some irrational 1400 year old law and that, right there, is the example Pakistan needs to follow.

Yes there is. The fact that it's using Islamic law in 2017 is a pretty major issue. Islamic law has no place in civilized society.

don't present your opinions as facts

they probably just realised they don't want to be stuck in 600 BC thats all.

If someone claims to be Muslim , and makes legislation against laws of Allah swt , he is a disbeliever . This amounts to open shirk , because he is trying to put himself besides Allah swt.

religious rules are not opinions. they are doctrines you are bound to follow if you are an islamic state whether you like them or not.

Then people will continue to oppress minorities, those with different believes, country will go backwards and others will continue to look down upon Pakistan. There is nothing with being religion, one should know that laws of 600 AD won't be suitable for modern society.

Islam and the Qur'an are relevant for all times.

Islam and the Qur'an are relevant for all times.

That seems to change conveniently depending on the issue at hand. When someone calls out some of the more archaic laws (slavery, polygamy for men only), it conveniently becomes a solution for issues of the time but where it's relevance in modern times is questioned, it conveniently becomes timeless.

great victory for human rights in Tunisia. would be nice to see other countries in region follow suit.

I don't believe anyone is restricted from marrying outside their religion in Pakistan, but is anyone able to confirm that?
