Twenty people have been killed and 26 injured in a mass shooting in the Texas city of El Paso.

Governor Greg Abbott described it as "one of the most deadly days in the history of Texas".

The massacre happened at a Walmart store near the Cielo Vista Mall, a few miles from the US-Mexican border.

A 21-year-old man is in custody. Police said the suspect was a resident of the Dallas-area city of Allen, about 650 miles (1,046km) east of El Paso.

He has been named by US media as Patrick Crusius.

CCTV images said to be of the gunman and broadcast on US media show a man in a dark T-shirt wearing ear protectors and brandishing an assault-style rifle.

US President Donald Trump described the attack as "an act of cowardice".

"I know that I stand with everyone in this country to condemn today's hateful act. There are no reasons or excuses that will ever justify killing innocent people", he wrote on Twitter.

The victims of the attack have not yet been named. However, Mexico's President Manuel Lopez Obrador said three Mexicans were among those killed, Reuters news agency reports.

The attack came less than a week after a teenage gunman killed three people at a California food festival. The Texas shooting has been dubbed the eighth deadliest in modern US history.

Obstacles to US gun control
America's gun culture in 10 charts
"We as a state unite in support of these victims and their family members," Mr Abbott said.

"We must do one thing today, one thing tomorrow and each and every day after this - we must unite."

The police and FBI are investigating whether an anonymous white nationalist "manifesto", shared on an online forum, was written by the gunman. The document says the attack was targeted at the local Hispanic community.

What happened?
El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said reports of an active shooter were received at 10:39 local time (16:39 GMT), and law enforcement officers were on the scene within six minutes.

The Walmart was full of shoppers buying back-to-school supplies at the time of the attack.

The 21-year-old is the only suspect in custody over the attack, and police say no officers fired their weapons while arresting him.

Mr Allen said the ages of victims were "numerous" as he described the situation as "horrific".

El Paso Police Department had earlier tweeted that blood donations were "needed urgently".

Kianna Long said she was at the Walmart with her husband when they heard gunfire.

"People were panicking and running, saying that there was a shooter," Ms Long told Reuters news agency. "They were running close to the floor, people were dropping on the floor."

Ms Long said she and her husband ran through a stock room before taking cover with other customers.

Another witness, Glendon Oakly, told CNN that he was in a sporting goods store inside the nearby shopping mall when a child ran inside "telling us there's an active shooter at Walmart".

Mr Oakly said no-one took the child's claim seriously, but just minutes later he heard two gunshots.

"I just thought about getting the kids out of the way," he said.

What has been the wider reaction?
The latest mass shooting in the United States has led to an outpouring of sympathy, but also led to fresh calls for gun control.

Walmart tweeted that it was "in shock over the tragic events" and was "working closely with law enforcement".

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke has abandoned a campaign event in Las Vegas to return to his home town.

Earlier, he spoke at a labour forum, telling the crowd the shooting shattered any illusion that gun reform will "come of its own accord" in the US.

"We know that there's a lot of injury, a lot of suffering in El Paso right now," he said.

Other Democratic presidential candidates also responded to the shooting with calls for gun control.

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker was among them, saying the US seems to be "accepting the idea that these [shootings] are going to be a regular occurrence".

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, however, said gun control would probably not have stopped the attack.

He added that if a "crazy" gunman launched such an attack, there was no way that law enforcement officers could be there to stop it.

"The best way is to be prepared to defend yourself," he told CBS News.

It's sad and unfortunate so sad for the lives lost, in Dallas which is on other side on Texas right now and can see almost everyone talking about it, seems like the guy was anti-immigrant and automation?

Also gun control is never happening in Texas, people can forget it.

Shooter apparently had a manifesto and he wrote this - "This attack is in response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas". He also praised NZ mosque attack.

Looks like another case of violent white supremacy.

Media will talk about it for couple of days, the heartless , racist president will issue a condolence message and then back to business until the next shooting. If the coward Obama with senate and house with him at one point could not pass the gun control law, don;t expect from this idiot Trump to do anything.

Living in the US I can say for sure the gun laws aren't going to change anytime soon (if ever in our lifetime).

The NRA needs to be banned by the government.

250th mass shooting in 215 days! When will things start to change :/

RIP.

A country that didn't change after Sandy Hook will never change.

Until US politics is controlled by corporate lobbying, 80% of problems in the US will remain. This predates Trump, however Trump seems to be in the bags of corporate lobbyists much more than Obama (not surprising).

These corporate lobbies control the media as well, which intentionally mislead the American public on many issues. Gun control is actually one of the issues that the left-leaning media such as CNN and MSNBC is quite good on, but they lie, mislead and misrepresent facts on other major issues such as healthcare, drug pricing, and wars. And this is primarily due to the fact that those industries advertise on their channels and don't want public to be aware of the facts.

USA is like Indian cricket team.

Big daddy that does well but peel the surface and you will see that it's corrupt with heavy politics in every sphere.

World super power does not even have proper public transportation, healthcare, financial regulations to prevent another 2008 fiasco.

LOL.

Extremely sad incident but it seems like a weekly occurrence in the USA.

With so many of these incidents one would expect that this would be the central topic of discussion in US politics.

RIP. It appears to be another far right madman.

I wonder who could have possibly inspired him...

Trump administration is in fact increasing deregulation since he is heavily in the pockets of the banks. Not just in banking sector in either, they are giving for-profit charter schools and universities much easier time to operate. Funny thing, they will spend 2 trillion to bail out banks, but forgiving crushing student loan debts? Big no.

Trump administration will spend 2 trillion bailing out banks, democrats should be highlighting this instead of carrying on about Russia.

Nine people have been killed and at least 16 injured in a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, police have confirmed.

First reports came in at about 01:00 local time (05:00 GMT) of a shooting outside a bar in the Oregon district of the city.

Police confirmed they killed the shooter at the scene. Casualties have been taken to a number of hospitals.

The incident came only hours after a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas which left at least 20 people dead.

"We had officers in the immediate vicinity when this shooting began and were able to respond and put an end to it quickly," Dayton Police Department wrote in a tweet. The authorities have appealed for witnesses.

Assistant Police Chief Matt Carper told reporters that officers on patrol managed to take down the shooter.

"Our people are very well trained for a situation like this," he said, adding it was "very fortunate that the officers were in close proximity".

Nothing is yet known about him, but Officer Carper said they were "anxious to discover" a motivation.

What happened in Dayton?
Footage posted on social media showed people running as dozens of gunshots echoed through the streets.

It is thought the shooting took place outside Ned Peppers Bar on E 5th Street. A note saying staff members were safe appeared on Ned Peppers Instagram page and on the nearby Hole in the Wall bar's Facebook page.

Jae Williams told the BBC he was at a nearby rap performance when they were told to evacuate.

"I was very shocked," he said. "We all evacuated quickly and safely. We were told to avoid the Oregon district."

"I got to my car, I could see cops, multiple ambulances. When I drove past I saw a lot of cops and ambulances."

Emergency services gathered at the corner of E 5th Street and Wayne Avenue in the wake of the shooting.

FBI agents are also at the scene to help in the investigation.

True, I'd say it's mainstream conservatism in all western countries these days, whether it's the Christchurch shooter, this guy or the Quebec mosque shooter.

The media and the govt aren't reporting this as terrorism, they're making the discussion about mental illness and gun control but not addressing the ideological reasons behind this attack and the community that supports this.

Bro no offence but you are probably one of the most vile and hypocritical Americans out there, you will have no issue crying over phalestine, do bhangra over bhai khabib and claim to be a very proud / inclusive muslim boy but have no sympathy for Americans which have genuine grievances or acknowledge how minorities up there are treated like absolute filth especially Afro Caribbean Americans (there ought to be even a little sympathy after how you ensalved them, the wounds wont recover so easily especially with that big waste of semen as your president), so don't take the moral high ground now unless your POV has changed after a long period of soul searching and mental improvement; my apologies in that case.

I feel like you have mental health issues. I have never supported trump and in fact I'm a very liberal guy, I've always supported BLM and consider Malcolm X among the greatest historical figures in this country. You seriously have some issues with comprehension and also some other underlying psychological issues - we've all seen your weird rants on this forum.

It's hilarious how you're spinning my comment which was about how the media and Trump govt aren't calling out white supremacy and is instead making this about mental health and gun control but for some reason your paindu brain wasn't able to process that and assumed I was defending them lmaoo. Wallah you're kuku.

Some outright obvious cases that should have been treated as domestic terrorism weren't treated as such by the US LEAs.

I just literally linked to a media article from one of the largest media organisations in the world, the BBC, which is reporting the incident as terrorism.

A shooting at a supermarket in the US state of Texas that left 20 dead is being investigated as domestic terrorism, officials say.

A 21-year-old white man was arrested at the scene of the attack in the city of El Paso, near the US-Mexico border.

He is believed to have posted an online document calling the attack a response to "the Hispanic invasion of Texas".

Police on Sunday said he had been charged with capital murder, meaning he could face the death penalty.

US President Donald Trump has said "perhaps more has to be done" to prevent mass shootings following the El Paso attack and another in Ohio 13 hours later in which nine people, including the gunman's sister, were killed.

"Hate has no place in our country, and we are going to take care of it," he told reporters on Sunday. "This has been going on for years, for years and years in our country and we have to get it stopped."

The president went on to link both attacks to a "mental illness problem".

"If you look at both of these cases, this is mental illness. These are people who are very, very seriously mentally ill," he said.

But critics argue that the roots of the two massacres lie in the president's language about immigrants and Mexicans in particular, and his opposition to gun control.

The El Paso gunman opened fire on a crowded Walmart on Saturday with an assault-style rifle and surrendered after being confronted by police officers outside the store. Twenty-six people were injured in the shooting.

"We're treating this as a domestic terrorist case," John Bash, the US Attorney for the Western District of Texas, told a news conference on Sunday.

He said the attack appeared "to be designed to intimidate a civilian population, to say the least".

The suspect has been named by US media as Patrick Crusius, a resident of Allen, in the Dallas area, about 650 miles (1,046km) east of El Paso. It is not yet clear how long before the attack he had gone to the city.

He is believed to be the author of a text posted on 8chan, an online message board frequently used by the far right, which describes a "cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion" in alluding to Hispanic people in the US.

The four-page document, reportedly posted some 20 minutes before police received the first emergency call from the Walmart, also expresses support for the gunman who killed 51 people in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March.

He has been co-operating with investigators, according to police, and has reportedly told them he acted alone.

You don't have to look very far to see it, the leader of the nation himself has fuelled the discontent. America must be an unhappy place if he represents a significant chunk of the white mindset.

Nice. That would make those 'tragic events' not so tragic after all. You could almost describe the killer as a hero for bringing about the immigration reform going by that statement.

Alright so you accept that in the past your comments against BLM and demonising of minorities was probably during a phase where you were consumed by racism and facism, I find it remarkable how your POV has all of a sudden changed or maybe it has specifically so your hypocrisy is not exposed so am still not completely convinced of your mental improvement, btw are you from the South in the USA ? may as well put the Confederate flag next to your name, talk about having an identity crisis :yk3 One minute bootlicking Trump, next minute in support of BLM and next minute you attack them

Are you freaking stupid? I've never been anit-BLM, never demonized minorities, never supported let alone 'bootlick' trump - I've literally been against trump since I joined this forum 3 years ago during the elections - pull out any one post of mines that proves me otherwise. You're really dumb and definitely have issues upstairs. The south has many desis and muslims lmaoo i guess you're saying we're all confederate supporters? lmaoo. Lol @ me having an "identity crisis", why don't you eat some jerk chicken and embrace your real heritage.

FBI have now classed the shootings as domestic terrorism.

Yes but this domestic terrorist has mental issues.

Why do white people suffer so much from mental issues? No white person can be a criminal mass murderer without having mental issues? Or was it due to violent video games? Its all very confusing.

RIP to the people murdered , tragic.

Trump needs to shut up and stop inspiring his fans to butcher people in daylight.

Well clearly there is racism in this post itself especially with the jerk chicken comment you're just exposing yourself to be an ignorant trump supporter with a very narrow minded unfortunately, your posting history confirms this further when it comes to BLM; don't try to take cover now, we've interacted before regarding the treatment of Black people in American, and listen don't act tough on a forum - we both know you wouldn't dare even dream of standing up a Black alpha male :afridi but a suggestion for you , stop hiding behind that KKK mask :yk3

The suspect accused of killing 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, has confessed that he was targeting "Mexicans", say US media.

An arrest report obtained by some news outlets sheds light on his arrest and his interviews while in police custody.

Officials believe the alleged gunman, Patrick Crusius, is the author of an online post decrying Hispanic migrants.

The shooting came just hours before another mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.

The two incidents have prompted a national debate about gun laws, with Republicans indicating they may be open to tightening background checks on buyers.

Federal officials say they are considering hate crime charges against Mr Crusius, who could face the death penalty if found guilty of the mass murder.

The Washington Post and Associated Press, which received the arrest report filed by El Paso Detective Adrian Garcia, reported that he document was written last Sunday, one day after the attack on the Walmart shoppers.

The document describes the suspect getting out of his car with his hands up and saying "I'm the shooter" when he was stopped by an officer near the crime scene.

Media caption'My heart hurts on every level'
According to Det Garcia, Mr Crusius waived his right to a lawyer, and told them that he had travelled from the suburbs of Dallas with an assault rifle and multiple magazines containing ammunition.

"The defendant stated once inside the store he opened fire using his AK-47 shooting multiple innocent victims," Det Garcia wrote.

He surrendered without incident, and has been speaking co-operatively with police since the attack, according to investigators in El Paso.

El Paso sits on the US-Texas border, and has a large majority Latino population.

On Friday, President Donald Trump, who travelled to El Paso earlier this week, pledged to take a "serious" look at passing new gun control measures to strengthen the background check system.

The suspect in El Paso was able to legally purchase the assault rifle used in the attack, and carry it into the Walmart due to the state's "open carry" gun laws.

On Thursday, lawyers for Mr Crusius told US media that his mother had called police weeks before the attack to say she was concerned about him owning a weapon.

There has also been increased scrutiny - and criticism - of the president's language - he has repeatedly referred to an immigrant "invasion".

The online manifesto being investigated by police used similar words.

Funerals begin
On Friday, the first funeral was held in El Paso, but others have already taken place across the border in Juarez, Mexico.

According to Mexican officials, eight of the victims held Mexican citizenship.

Relatives of longtime El Paso resident Angelina Silva Englisbee, 86, described her in the LA Times as "sassy" and "a very strong-willed lady".

On Thursday, motorcycle police escorted a black hearse carrying the body of Elsa Mendoza de La Mora, 57, for the seven-mile (11km) journey across the border into Juarez.

The mother of two had been a teacher and principal of a school in Juarez. Her family say they had been waiting for her in the Walmart car park when she was killed.

America has spread wars and tyranny across the world in the last 50 years, and now the chickens are coming home to roost

At least five people have been killed and many more injured in the second mass shooting in the US state of Texas in a month.

First to be shot was a policeman who stopped the gunman's car between the cities of Midland and Odessa.

The gunman went on to shoot at numerous motorists and passers-by. At one point, he abandoned his car and stole a postal truck before continuing his spree.

He was shot dead by police at a cinema complex.

The motive of the gunman, who was white and in his mid-30s, was unclear.

Four weeks ago, 22 people were killed by a gunman in the Texan city of El Paso.

America's gun culture in charts
Four dates that explain the US gun debate
What do US Democrats want to do about guns?
About 20 people were injured in this latest incident, three of them police officers - although the police said not all of them were shot. Some were cut by glass when their car windows were hit by bullets and shattered.

Odessa's Medical Center Hospital said a 17-month-old boy was struck in the face with a bullet fragment and airlifted to hospital. Seven other patients were in a serious condition.

Police said Saturday's incident began at just after 15:00 local time (20:00 BST) after two Texas Department of Public Safety officers pulled over a vehicle on a Midland highway.

The driver then opened fire on the officers before driving away. He then began shooting at other people in several other locations.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement that he was "horrified to see such a senseless act". Texas Governor Greg Abbott said: "We will not allow the Lone Star State to be overrun by hatred and violence. We will unite, as Texans always do, to respond to this tragedy."

In a tweet, US President Donald Trump said he was being kept informed about the shootings.

Later, Vice President Mike Pence said he and the Trump administration remained "absolutely determined to work with leaders in both parties in Congress to take steps that we can address and confront this scourge of mass atrocity in our country".

Amid a clamour in the aftermath of the Texas and Ohio shootings earlier this month for increased background checks on firearm purchases, Mr Trump had said he was "looking to do background checks".

But he appeared to reverse that position after a phone call with the chief executive of the National Rifle Association (NRS), Wayne LaPierre, saying: "I'm also very, very concerned with the Second Amendment, more so than most presidents would be. People don't realise we have very strong background checks right now."
