75% of fans oppose VAR in Premier League, says FSA

Three-quarters of fans of Premier League clubs are against the use of the video assistant referee, according to a survey by the Football Supporters' Association.

Just under 8,000 fans responded to the survey, which asked supporters of the 20 sides in this season's top flight for their views on VAR.

Of those asked, 90% disagreed that the introduction of the technology in the Premier League has improved the matchday experience, and 91% believe VAR has harmed the spontaneity of goal celebrations.

A total of 94% disagreed that VAR makes watching football on television more enjoyable.

"The results show that most fans want VAR removed," Thomas Concannon, the FSA's Premier League network manager, told BBC Sport.

"We've all lived with VAR for so long now that we've seen the negative impact it's had on the game.

"People are annoyed about the time that it takes, annoyed about the accuracy, and annoyed about the [reduced] spontaneity.

"It does take away from what football is meant to be and what those special moments are about."

In a statement responding to the results, the Premier League said: "We recognise the importance of minimising the impact of VAR on the supporter experience.

"As part of ongoing dialogue with supporters, Premier League research indicates fans are largely in favour of keeping VAR, but improving the way it is used."

My predictions for Champions League QF Leg 1:
RM vs Bayern [1-1]

My predictions for Champions League QF Leg 1:
RM vs Bayern [1-1]
Sporting vs Arsenal [0-2]
Barca vs Atletico [2-1]
PSG vs Liv [3-0]
I fear Liv will be mauled tomorrow. PSG are formidable at home. They will ensure their is no comeback for the Anfield leg.

PSG 1-0 up vs liverpool

Athletico 1-0 up vs 10 Man Barca

Barca is going to lose Today but they can recover in 2nd leg. Easy win for PSG :kp
2-0 PSG, they should be more goals up

Other game Barca are just being wasteful in front of goal, even with 10 men

Ruggeri getting assists in a UCL quarterfinal vs Barcelona but can’t even get a call up for Italy :kp

It was a red card, Barca have no complaints
For me as well, that was a yellow card, not a red. Because once you send him off, you change the whole game. And in the Champions League, you need to be 100% sure.

I think the referee was too quick there

Liv have the pedigree and the personnel to come back against PSG at Anfield. They’ve done it in the past and they can do it again. When the Anfield crowd gets roaring, we’ve seen oppositions lose their wits against Liv. This one ain’t over yet imo.

That Liverpool you are talking about seems to have faded. It will be a miracle if a comeback does happen.

Like I said..it’s not that Liverpool anymore.

My predictions for remaining QF 2nd legs:

Bayern vs Real [3-1]
Arsenal vs Sporting [2-0]

Prestianni gets six-match ban for homophobic conduct

Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni has been given a six-game ban by Uefa for homophobic conduct during their Champions League knockout play-off match with Real Madrid in February.

The match at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon was halted for 10 minutes after Real's Vinicius Jr accused Prestianni of racially abusing him.

Prestianni, 20, denied making a racist comment and said Vinicius misheard him. Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni said that Prestianni told him he had in fact directed a homophobic comment towards the Brazil forward.

Argentina's Prestianni will be banned for two further games, having already served a provisional one-match ban, with the other three suspended for two years.

European football's governing body Uefa has made a request to its world counterpart Fifa to extend the ban worldwide.

Vinicius had put Real 1-0 up in the second half against Benfica, before being booked for an excessive celebration.

Following an interaction with Prestianni, 25-year-old Brazilian Vinicius ran over to referee Francois Letexier while gesturing towards the opposition player. Letexier then made the crossed arms gesture, which was introduced by Fifa in May 2024, to signal racist abuse.

Vinicius then walked off the pitch and was followed by his Real Madrid team-mates. After the match he wrote on his Instagram account: "Racists are, above all, cowards."

Prestianni would have faced a minimum 10-match ban from European competition if he had been found guilty of racist abuse.

Benfica defended their player following the incident, claiming there was a "defamation campaign" against him, adding they "fully support" and believe his version of events.

However, coach Jose Mourinho said Prestianni's career under him would be "over" if the abuse was proven.

Two weeks later, Fifa president Gianni Infantino said players who cover their mouths when speaking to opponents during confrontations should be sent off.

Football's rule making body the International Football Association Board (Ifab) has already agreed to look at measures to stop players hiding what they might be saying to an opposition player.
