I have a genuinely stubborn knot in the pit of my stomach about this.
Statistics show overall that when someone is admitted to an ICU with coronavirus symptoms, their chance of survival is barely greater than 50-50.
If the worst happens, the PM must be considered a casualty of war and given a grand funeral - I just hope his replacement would be up to the task.

Across the 300-year history of the Prime Minister role, we have changed PM on average every 5 years, which I agree is quite often.
Within this mean number, curiously there have been a small group of PMs who served for a very long time (around a decade, or even longer), and then a much larger handful of PMs who served for far shorter lengths of time.
Johnson was looking like a candidate for the first group, and still might be - but sadly he might now fall into the second group.

Boris Johnson has spent the night in intensive care after his health deteriorated - 11 days after he initially tested positive for COVID-19.
Downing Street says Mr Johnson has been suffering from "persistent" coronavirus symptoms - and Sky's Beth Rigby reports he had been struggling to breathe and needed oxygen on Monday.
Foreign secretary Dominic Raab, now 'deputy prime minister' speaks after Boris Johnson was taken into intensive care.
Derek Hill, professor of medical imaging at University College London, said Mr Johnson could be given a breathing aid known as continuous positive airway pressure.
This bridges the gap between an oxygen mask and full ventilation, sending a blend of air and oxygen into the mouth at a steady rate.
However, Prof Hill warned many COVID-19 patients eventually "progress to invasive ventilation", which is for people whose illness is so severe that they are struggling or unable to breathe for themselves.
A mechanical ventilator either does all the breathing for the patient or assists the patient's own breathing, and they are normally placed under heavy sedation.
Prof Hill explained: "One of the features of COVID-19 in all countries seems to be that many more men become seriously ill than women - especially in the over 40 age group.
"Also, we know that people under about 60 seem to have a higher chance of making a recovery from critical illness with COVID-19 than older people.
"But there is no doubt this turn of events means Boris Johnson is extremely sick."
Mr Johnson celebrated his 55th birthday last June.
Prof Hill added the prime minister's situation highlights three key issues in the response to COVID-19.
The US president added that Americans are "praying" for the UK prime minister.

"Firstly, many patients need help breathing, and there is a shortage of the mechanical ventilators that can do this - and in particular a shortage of the high-quality intensive care ventilators most suitable for COVID-19 patients who might need help breathing for more than a week," he said.
"Secondly, COVID-19 patients need a huge amount of oxygen to help them breathe, which is potentially going to be in short supply.
"Thirdly, looking after people in intensive care requires skilled staff, and the experience of New York has been that finding enough skilled staff has been the greatest challenge."
Boris Johnson has announced he will sontinue to self-isolate with coronavirus.
It is understood that Mr Johnson remained conscious when he was moved to intensive care, and that it was done as a precaution should be require ventilation.
The prime minister is likely to have undergone several tests - and it is possible that he will have blood and samples from his throat collected.
According to the World Health Organisation, about 14% of COVID-19 patients will develop symptoms severe enough to need oxygen, and 5% will need intensive care treatment.
The latest figures show that the death rate of those admitted to intensive care in the UK now exceeds 50%.
Dr Simon Clarke, a microbiologist, told Sky News: "I'll say this to you, the NHS, particularly at this moment, doesn't give up intensive care beds just for people to be looked over - it doesn't work like that, even for prime ministers.
"He would not be in intensive care unless he needed to be in intensive care, especially not at this time, and I think it's probably about time that the press people in Number 10 started levelling with us about what his condition really is."

I think if /once Johnson makes a full recovery and gets back as a prime minister then I think this will hit home regarding to prioritising the nhs, other social services as paramount to fund these and make sure in future if events like this occur then we are absolutely practically prepared and have a system inline to match the likes of Germany and China.

Boris Johnson is "stable" and in "good spirits" after receiving oxygen treatment for coronavirus while in intensive care, his spokesperson has said.
Mr Johnson, who spent the night in the intensive care unit (ICU) at St Thomas' Hospital after his Covid-19 symptoms worsened, has not required a ventilator to help him breathe.
While in the ICU Mr Johnson was tested for pneumonia but later given the all clear, contrary to rumours on social media.
Meanwhile, the Queen sent a message to Mr Johnson's family and his pregnant partner Carrie Symonds, saying they were in her thoughts and that she wished him a full and speedy recovery, Buckingham Palace said.
The PM was also wished a "speedy recovery" by Prince William, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.

But he will not be asked to step in to brief the monarch on Boris Johnson's behalf.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is "in good spirits" after spending the night in intensive care being treated for coronavirus, No 10 has said.
Mr Johnson, 55, was stable overnight, is being given oxygen and is not on a ventilator, a spokesman added.
The foreign secretary said he was confident the the PM would "pull through" because he was a "fighter".
The Queen has sent a message to Mr Johnson's family and pregnant partner, saying they are in her thoughts.
Speaking at the daily coronavirus briefing, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Mr Johnson was not just a boss but "also our friend".
"So all of our thoughts and prayers are with the prime minister at this time, with Carrie and with his whole family," he said
"And I'm confident he'll pull through because If there's one thing I know about this prime minister: he's a fighter. And he'll be back at the helm, leading us through this crisis in short order."
'Speedy recovery'
It comes as Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove became the latest politician to self-isolate.
Mr Gove said he did not have symptoms but a family member did. He is continuing to work at home.
As of 17:00 on 6 April, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 6,159 have died - a record increase of 786 in a day, the Department of Health and Social Care said, compared with 439 on Monday.
Mr Johnson was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital in central London with "persistent symptoms" of Covid-19 on Sunday and was moved to intensive care on Monday at 19:00 BST after his symptoms worsened.
Buckingham Palace said the Queen had sent a message to Mr Johnson's family and his partner, Carrie Symonds, saying she was thinking of them, and wished the PM a full and speedy recovery.

In response to the developments, Twitter users banded together on Tuesday to call for a round of applause for Mr Johnson at 8pm to mirror the way NHS workers battling Covid-19 are applauded each Thursday
The hashtag #ClapforBoris started trending in the UK soon after, with some users calling on people to clap "whatever your political views are" and regardless of whether they "love him or hate him".
Others suggested it was time "time for the nation" to support Mr Johnson after he has "supported the nation in every way possible" amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Tonight I shall #ClapforBoris and for everyone facing this vicious virus - he is a symbol of them all," added another.
Not everyone was behind the idea, however, with many Twitter users saying they would not be applauding the Prime Minister.
Several people suggested to do so would detract from the "Clap for our Carers" campaign which has seen millions across the country take to their doorsteps and balconies to celebrate NHS workers on Thursday evenings in recent weeks.

Not convincingly. We had a two week head start on Italy and Spain. He wasted it. He only introduced faux-lockdown after Macron threatened to close the border.
Merkel did the right thing with mass testing early on and very few Germans have died. It helps to have leaders who understand science. Johnson does not.

The real fear is when the clinicians start to go sick or drop from exhaustion. All the volunteer paramedics where I live are stood down, held in reserve to man the ambulances and wards.
This is no Falklands War where the few hundred glorious dead were far away. People will change their minds when the death toll at home starts to impact on their lives. The economy will tank and then Brexit will happen and make it even worse.
Labour have got their act together and will present a credible alternative to more people and the winds will change.

We are talking about trillions of pounds being risked in the economy!! You don’t just call a complete shut down in 1 hour of seeing how things are unfolding in other countries. It doesn’t work like that! He did his best to hold it off so that he gives the cabinet enough time to work out how they need to handle this with as little damage as possible. We have been dented by millions of pounds in loss but this could have been billions if not trillions due to a sudden shut down, including mass looting and riots!

If you shut down everything straight way, it would create mass panic as it suggests that this is a measure someone is taking if there is a threat of a nuclear bomb about to go off anytime. People earning £60-100 a day to run their families losing each and every penny within a matter of seconds due to an invisible threat which they themselves feel would not even harm them.
Use your common sense here, decisions as such are not made like a movie script where things are moving fast. This government has surprisingly done the best they can with the dynamics of the country and the serious money that is being affected. They have lacked on Testing measures but besides that, they have definitely saved more lives than what they would have lost

They could have started that process two weeks earlier. Instead they faffed about herd immunity and now there will be thousands of avaoidable deaths.
Look at how fast the Germans reacted, what measures they put in place and how few of them have died by comparison. Of course it helps that they have four times the number of hospital beds per capita andf are fully staffed while we are 30,000 nurses short.

Boris Johnson is "mentally able to make decisions" and remains "accessible" to his government team, according to the former defence minister.
The prime minister has now spent three nights in intensive care with the coronavirus.
Doubts have been expressed as to whether the cabinet will be willing to make major decisions before Mr Johnson recovers, including when the UK lockdown could be lifted.
But with the PM's condition said to be improving, the former defence minister Tobias Ellwood indicated that he remains capable of signing off any big decisions.
Asked on Sky's Kay Burley@Breakfast who would be responsible should another significant challenge emerge, Mr Ellwood said: "The prime minister is mentally able to make decisions.
"He's accessible as well.
"What we're going through is unorthodox, we've not been here before, but I have been given assurances that the decision-making process can work in this difficult scenario."
Downing Street confirmed on Wednesday that Mr Johnson was in "good spirits" and making "steady progress".
Chancellor Rishi Sunak added that the prime minister had been sitting up in bed and "engaging positively" with medical staff.
However, his spokesman confirmed he is no longer working.

Mr Johnson has received oxygen but has not been on a ventilator.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is deputising for him and has been chairing the daily meeting of the government's "war cabinet" since the prime minister was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital on Sunday.
He will also lead Thursday's meeting of the emergency COBRA committee, which includes leaders of the devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
They will discuss how to review the UK's lockdown measures, which Mr Johnson had committed to look again after three weeks - a period which ends on Easter Monday.
The chancellor has said the review itself will be next week, when data from SAGE (the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies) becomes available.
The lockdown is expected be extended because doubts remain as to when the coronavirus outbreak might peak in the UK.
Wales has already committed to extending its lockdown beyond the Easter weekend, with the forecast warm weather again raising concerns people will be tempted to break social distancing rules.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden indicated to Sky News that the lockdown would indeed continue across the whole of the country.
"This is the moment at which we need to stick to the path that we've chosen," he told Kay Burley@Breakfast.
"We shouldn't be giving up this Easter weekend."
The latest figures on Wednesday reported another 938 deaths across the UK, taking the number of deaths in hospitals to 7,097.

The longer he stays in ICU the more chance of him never coming out of it, God Forbid. I hope he makes a full recovery, but three nights and counting sounds ominous.

A spokesman added: "He is in extremely good spirits."
He was taken to hospital on Sunday - 10 days after testing positive - and was moved to intensive care on Monday.

He was receiving "standard oxygen treatment" in intensive care and had not been on a ventilator, Downing Street said earlier.
The PM "continues to improve" after a "good night" and thanked the NHS for the "brilliant care" he has received, the spokesman added.
A total of 7,978 people have now died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus, up by 881 on Wednesday.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has urged the public to stay indoors over this Easter weekend, saying that after almost three weeks of lockdown "we are starting to see the impact of the sacrifices we've all made".
"Let's not ruin it now," he added.

Yes in any sensible country. Here we will have his cabinet calling him, asking him to make the final decisions. They know Boris will take the blame and their future careers will be safe, regardless if he makes the wrong decisions which we are all used to.

Why would Boris resign? He’s temporarily out of action due to illness, and he will probably make a full recovery from it by the end of the month.
