Quetta Gladiators sign Umar Gul as bowling coach

KARACHI: Former Pakistan Super League (PSL) Champions Quetta Gladiators have signed World T20 winner Umar Gul as bowling coach of the team going into HBL PSL season six.

Gul, who is regarded as one the best T20 bowlers of all time, will replace legendary all-rounder Abdur Razzaq as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided against issuing non-objection certificates to national coaches and head coaches of provincial teams.

Quetta Gladiators owner Nadeem Omar said that he is delighted with signing of Gul.

“Gul will bring in his wealth of experience and his appointment will prove very beneficial for the likes of speedsters Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah and Usman Shinwari,” Nadeem stated.

“He ruled the T20 format for years so we couldn’t have asked for a better replacement and it’s like a family member returning to the team. I also want to thank Razzaq for his exceptional services over the years.”

The 36-year-old played 47 Tests, 130 ODIs and 60 T20Is for Pakistan and took 163, 179 and 85 wickets respectively.

He represented Gladiators in first two seasons of PSL.

Gladiators Head Coach Moin Khan believed that this move will prove beneficial for the team.

“We looked at both local and foreign options and felt that Gul will prove to be the best choice for us because of his understanding of modern day cricket. He dominated the best players of the world in T20 format so he would be a perfect guide to our bowling group,” Moin stated.

“I would also like to wish best of luck to Razzaq for his future assignments as he served the team really well.”

Gul achieved the highest ever ratings among bowlers in T20 format when International Cricket Council (ICC) recently announced the ratings across format.

The fast-bowler said that he cannot wait to get going with Gladiators.

“I’m thrilled to join one of the best PSL franchises in Quetta Gladiators. They have some amazing young bowlers and I can’t wait to work with them. I want to thank Nadeem Omar and Moin Khan for believing in me and giving me this massive opportunity.”

GOAT T20I bowler. Would love for him to teach Hasnain and Naseem a thing or two about the yorker.

we need to move away from people like Waqar, and invest more time in former players like Gul to try and develop them as coaches.

Good stuff. Hopefully he can be a decent bowling coach as he is someone who had to work extra hard for the things he learnt in his career. This makes the knowledge transfer to youngsters much smoother as he knows the difficultly of learning different things from the scratch as he was naturally not as skillful as some past greats and had to work hard to improve which will allow him to teach someone like Naseem or Hasnain at their level.

Good choice and hopefully someone who can help the youngsters, including Naseem Shah

Yorkers - get working on the yorkers of both Hasnain and Naseem.

Great opportunity for both youngsters to learn from an excellent bowler.

Any evidence why? Wouldn"t write someone off until they've had a fair shot

Somethings are crystal clear you do not need evidence for that. Every person who had iota of knowledge of cricket knew Misbah would be pathetic as a coach , and he proved that , Pakistan tried him and wasted time and money and the team regressed further.

Hopefully he's able to pass on some of his skills to Naseem and Hasnain. I've got a feeling both players will end up specialising in the shorter forms of the game and they won't find a better person to learn from them one of the best ever T20 bowlers.

Surely a PSL coaching stint is good for Gul though? If he does well then that's great, if not then someone else will be appointed next year.

We have to give opportunities to these ex players to coach becuase without experience in such roles, how can someone make the step up as an international coach?

Also not saying all great players make great coaches, but I'm sure he does know a thing or two about T20 bowling.

Just a prediction, but Gul is exactly the kind of professional who would suit coaching. He was always hardworking, stayed away from controversies, and poured his love and energy into the team. He was not as naturally gifted and had to work hard to learn things along the way - naturally gifted cricketers often struggle to relay instruction. He has been in mentor roles in the past in the first class setup, and he is humble enough to prioritize team spirit rather than become a controlling presence in the dressing room. I wish him all the best and hope he can serve the country well.

Coaching is a specialized job.

I have made my point clear , let the time come , you will see how big a failure Gul is as a coach.

A good appointment in my opinion. Gul seems like a good and humble option as a coach with good communication ability with players. He understands t20i bowling pretty well. Might be an upgrade over Abdul Razzaq as well.

It's good to see QG preferring home coaches over foreign names and bringing good results too. QG have been the most successful team in PSL I think win% wise or I might be wrong.

Has he done his coaching courses ?

He’s has spent nearly 2 decades palying for the Pakistan team.

His T20 stats even though till the end speak for his skills.

He is definitely a asset to any coaching panel.

Just because players will listen to him as he has done it.

That's not a qualification to become a coach. Waqar Younis took 373 Test wickets yet his coaching abilities are there for all to see after 5 failed stints.

We need to recognise coaching is a highly specialised job now and simply being a former great shouldn't mean you walk into a coaching gig.

Also having a qualification doesnt mean he should get a bowling coach position in a team

Sure, but having the qualifications should be a basic requirement like it is when applying for any other job.

I think Gul may have some basic PCB accreditations but I cannot recall him having any prior coaching experience. He literally only retired a few months ago.

Only in Pakistan it seems our ex-players feel they don't need to first prove themselves at U16/U19 level, and can just waltz into a national/PSL coaching job because they were a big name.

Great choice, you cannot have a better T20 bowling coach. Hope its just a start and he will be coaching national team in near future. To me he looks like a man with very good temperament too .

I also liked the way he retired gracefully at right time.

He has to start somewere and am sure he will gain more exposure to coaching experiences in the future and its the decision of psl they are paying his wage so its upto them. Coaching qualification are easy to get here in England azwell.
