KARACHI: Recalled paceman Umar Gul is hopeful of Pakistan improving their ICC One-day International (ODI) rankings to avoid playing qualifiers of the 2019 World Cup, while saying his best is yet to come.

The 32-year-old, who has returned to the one-day squad after a 16-month hiatus for the forthcoming series in Ireland and England, said Pakistan will put up strong performances to move up from their current ninth ranking.

“I’m pretty sure we will improve our ranking before the cut-off date. We have very good players and just need a little improvisation in our style of play to win matches regularly,” Umar told Dawn exclusively before leaving for London. “I know we will bounce back just like we have done in the Test series. It’s matter of self-belief and if the team get it then anything can happen [in the coming England one-dayers] because we are capable of winning as much as the rival side.

“We must be on guard because England are a very good ODI side and one of the best teams especially on their home grounds. It’s going to be a challenge for us but we are no less, we have that power to overcome any side at any place.”

On his return to the side after more than a year, Umar said it was the sheer hard work he put in which convinced selectors.

“I have been working really hard after being dropped in April last year. The only thing that came to my mind was that I had to be at the peak of fitness and form to get noticed [by the selectors] in order to make a comeback,” he remarked. “I have been performing at the domestic level and also was man-of-the-series in a Ramadan Cup this year. Once the fitness was assessed at the short camp in Lahore, the selectors picked me for the ODI series.”

When asked if he regretted at being harsh at the selectors for overlooking him despite performing consistently since the Bangladesh tour in 2015, Umar clarified that he was making a point.

“Every player develops frustration especially when you do well at domestic level and still gets ignored. I spoke to Dawn [in late June] about the previous selectors’ mistrust and mismanagement. I even spoke about the current ones but only in regard to the army fitness camp where I thought I should have been given a chance and assessed,” Umar stressed. “But I’m glad that it is behind now because when I played in Karachi during Ramazan, I felt confident because I got my rhythm back. I’m sure it did play a part in my selection as well.”

Umar, who has taken 173 wickets in 126 ODIs, said he was looking forward to the upcoming matches after doing well on the last tour in 2010 and warned England his best is yet to come.

“It was great feeling back then, picking up 12 wickets [at 21.25] while also retuning the best figures of my career [6-42]. It’s always great to play in England,” Umar recalled. “I do rate it as the best series but I still think my best is yet to come because when I look back at the good days I had during my career, it makes me feel very happy because I want to make Pakistan proud.

“Being in Pakistan colours is the best motivation one can get. There are a lot of moments in my career that I cherish, especially the 2009 World Twenty20 when Pakistan won the title.”

One thing is for sure he is not soft hearted like mostly we have now a days .he will show aggression to English batsmen but i am afraid he will be taken apart by the likes of roy, hales, butler and Co

Gul proves all of us wrong and bowls some magic spell like you did in 2010 otherwise pretty much your career is going to end after the series

this bowling attack give me headache
gul
Wahab
Yasir Shah
Gul and wahab struggles to swing and control the new ball and yasir shah is also clue less when batsmen attacked him So alot depends upon amir, imad and Hasan ali(if he plays)
God bless us .!!!!

I hope he does well but we all know how this will end.

Its very frustrating to see the lack of logic behind the tactics for the odi format. I really hope the new coach can do something about this.

If we play yasir , wahab and gul we will get smashed.

Wahab and yasir should play tests only.
Wahab will keep banging it in on a short length that doesnt work in odis.

Thanks for the warning

I really would like him back to his old best

Hope he does well..lets wait & see before writing him off.

So, we need a poll, on whether he will be play 2 odi's or 3 till injury strikes

Gul needs to grow back his long hair, he looked a million dollar with that look,,[emoji78]

Inzy has made such big blunders for ODIs.

He has done no better than Haroon Rashid.

I think someone should give him a reality check. I am really worried on who will partner Amir for the new ball as neither Gul or Wahab have the control to use the new ball. Hassan Ali is the only one who can use a new ball but I doubt he will get the opportunity ahead of Gul till he is taken to cleaners. This is where Sohail Khan was an ideal pick instead of Gul as he is used to English conditions and can use the new ball

Told you when the team was announced that more than domestic cricket and fitness he has been selected because of man of the series performance in Ramadan T20 Cup.

This is the last chance given to him by Inzamam at Gul's favourite bowling surfaces. He has to perform otherwise this will be his chance series for Pakistan in Odi cricket and curtains would fall forever if Inzamam remains selector for 2 years.

In T20i though he has a chance for 1 or 2 more comebacks but Odi Cricket ? Last Chance.

There will always be "blunders" because you can never select a team which satisfies everyone.

Let's just see how it works before passing on judgements, premature comments often look foolish in hindsight.

One or two odd selection is fine.

The horrendous selections are obvious. Don't tell me we should celebrate if Gul or Wahab or Yasir some how fire in a match or two.

Because that's not a long term option. Anyone can fire in odd matches.

a week ago Hafeez warned of his best performance yet to come ahead of the 4rth test, we all know what happened to him later

Well of course he is awful but for that you have to wait for the series to start next Wednesday

Dear Syed Brothers !

I missed the 2nd innings.

Can you people give a little update about one of my passions ? You ll be kind to do So.

1. Which Umar Gul Turned Today ?

The Rare One (best of the best)

or

The Usual One ?

2. Was his right knee bending completely during delivery stride or the same post injury Braced Leg ?

3. How was his Follow through ? Agressive ? Like 2005-2006 Indian Tour ? 2009 WT20 or not like that ?

4. Was there any evidence of Immaculate Control of Line and Length with Good Length bowling & surprise searing yorkers ? (Rare)

or was it inbetween stuff ?

Honestly, I just watched Amirs first overs, but as soon as Gul had ball in his hand, I started my work (because was disappointed and was anticipating Hassan to bowl with Amir).

Looked good.

Better than I thought he'd be. His recent form has been awful and I was expecting him to get smashed by Ireland too.

Instead, he bowled well and got the ball to move.

Did you even watch the match? He wasn't gun barrel straight, extracted seam movement.

Give me a break with your hint of seam movement.

Sohail is genuine new ball swing bowler.

Who is going to open the bowling? Gul? Who is too chicken to take responsibility after playing for so long.

In a short space of time Sohail has literally carried the Pak bowling attack on the front line with the new ball.

Also remember sohail batting is of use as well. Big blunder not to pick him. He was on form and playing games will help improves his fitness as long as he is not overworked. Could have played at least 3 Odis.

To be fair he looked decent - pace must have been close to the 140s I reckon.

He looked fitter and got some movement as well.

The only issue I have with him is when he experiments his length - can't afford to do it against top aides like England.

Hasn't looked this good since 2011 to be honest, but let's see for how long this rhythm of his lasts.

the ramadan cup was a t20 fun cricket. whats all this performance in the domestic circuit he's talking about? im only going by memory, but i thought there were a bunch of other bowlers that did better than him.

If he can play another two years at a high level then it will greatly help Pakistan LOI teams.

He bowled well but I have no idea why Sohail isn't in the ODI squad

Well gul is one bowler who depends on rhythm more than others so will be interesting to see how he goes as hes either very good or very bad with the ball, never seems to be any inbetweens.

I am open to Sohail's selection, but Gul bowled well, credit where it's due.

I hope :gul can smash some sixes , and there is thread up in the forum " Gul the nest bowling allrounder " :))

It usually takes one good hammering for Gul to lose the plot. Hopefully he will show a bit of mental strength this time.

England won't allow Gul to get into his rhythm. Gul v2.0 is nowhere the bowler he once was. Let's see though, fingers crossed.

He looked very good yesterday lets hope he continues bowling like this.
If he does we will have a good partner for Amir.

He certainly did extract seam movement.

The batting by Ireland was absolutely pathetic. I look at the overall package and majority of his deliveries are innocuous and Eng batters will dominate him.

There are better options in Adil and Sohail. I really don't understand on which criteria Gul was selected in the ODI squad.

Well now he has been selected and we should back him to do well. Plus he also bowled well yesterday hopefully he comes good for the sake of Pakistan.

I presume he means he intends to bowl 10 overs, take 5 wickets for 120 runs

We need the umar gul that one us ODIs against england in 2010 in the 3rd and 4th ODIs of that series, he was quite brilliant at that time.

Credit for him to bowl well against mighty Irish but I don't want to have false hopes (he has let me down many time on key moments in past years). So I'll hold my opinion until he play against ENG (hope he proves me wrong).

When was Gul ever good in ODIs? I remember his wonderful T20 record but not ODIs.

He just hasn't developed from the day he entered cricket.

He is either an example of talent unfulfilled someone who has punched above his weight. Can't tell.

Don't expect miracles. We need to move on. Too many bowlers around who can develop into a better version of Gul.

Having said all that, I am an admirer of his contributions to Pakistan cause.

Yes he has

Ever since the phainta by Sehwag in 2011 for me

Been awful today again Pace is down and he cant pitch two balls in the same place

He is not the same bowler.

Where is Irfan? He is a pathetic fielder. But when he gets it right, he is unplayable.

This is how Gul brain works - short, short, short.

Just awful bowling.

And his guy has been playing for 12 years.

It's quite remarkable that he is so consistent bowling garbage.

His line was terrible.

Bowling both sides of the wicket with the batsmen picking him off with ease.

It's not enough to warrant a drop unfortunately in the eyes of selectors.

He was being carted in similar fashion vs NZ.

Anyone who complain about his performance should be ashamed he warned us already.

Just ask Inzi Bhai why the hell he selected him ? what kind of blind selection is this ? and how will he defend his inclusion.

So bottom line is usko pakro jisne isko select kia hay.

As i said earlier, this is probably the poorest selection decision for the ODI squad. The guy has not been performing for a while and time is not on his side either. It is time we moved on.

He has failed to impress the last couple of times he was recalled.

I thought that poster had typed he will smash England, iA gul does well am routing for him

He got routed today though. :gul

Sick of these same faces who have failed so many times but are allowed free passes.

What can one say? He is yesterday's news yet he is here. Now in order to prevent his incessant whining he will need to be played in three odi's so that he gets his fair run while we lose the series

Summed up our cricket so well

Is this 2010 again or what? This guy has been finished since 2012 yet he is opening the bowling in 2016.

5-0 whitewash on the way.

He hasn't changed a bit.Same old garbage bowler!

He looks past it. The Knee injury more or less further diminished his bowling. Time to move on.

Garbage performance yesterday just bowling back of a length or to much leg side, need to be dropped for 2nd game in series.

RIP Umar Gul as far as international cricket is concerned.
