The National Selection Panel have named the following 14-man squad for the three Victoria Bitter One-Day International matches against New Zealand that will contest the Chappell-Hadlee trophy. The first match is Sydney on 4 December, then Canberra and Melbourne on 6 and 9 December respectively.

  • Steve Smith (C) - New South Wales
  • David Warner (VC) - New South Wales
  • George Bailey - Tasmania
  • Hilton Cartwright - West Australia
  • Pat Cummins - New South Wales
  • James Faulkner - Tasmania
  • Aaron Finch - Victoria
  • Travis Head - South Australia
  • Josh Hazlewood - New South Wales
  • Mitchell Marsh - West Australia
  • Glenn Maxwell - Victoria
  • Mitchell Starc - New South Wales
  • Matthew Wade - Victoria
  • Adam Zampa - South Australia

Included in the Australian ODI squad for the first time is West Australian all-rounder Hilton Cartwright.

Interim Chairman of Selectors Trevor Hohns said: “Hilton bowls useful aggressive medium-pace and is a very good striker of the ball,”

“He is an exciting young prospect for Australian cricket and we have been watching him at the pathway level for some time now,“ said Hohns.

The squad sees the return to international cricket for New South Wales’ pace-bowler Pat Cummins following an injury lay-off.

“It is fantastic to see Pat back in Australian colours again. It has been a frustrating period for him but we are certainly excited to have him fit and firing ahead of this series.”

A player from the 14-man squad may be released prior to the first ODI to play in the Sheffield Shield round beginning on 6 December.

The squad will assemble in Sydney on 30 November.

John Hastings can’t crack Australian ODI squad despite record year

VICTORIA’S medium-pacer John Hastings says he’s shocked over his selection snub for next month’s one-day international series against New Zealand.

“I was very disappointed. I was initially pretty shocked to be honest,” Hastings said on Friday.

Hastings has been named in a 12-man squad for Victoria’s Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia starting on Saturday at the MCG.

The big pace bowler has missed the first three Shield games with a broken finger.

He says his one-day international record of 29 wickets in 2016, equalled only by England’s Adil Rashid, should count for something.

“I thought my performances over the last 12 months would have probably stacked up,” he said.

“In my mind I’m 100 per cent fit. I know I haven’t played a lot of cricket.

“I was very disappointed not to be in that side.

“I had a broken finger just before the Matador Cup.

“I’ve been working really hard for the last five weeks.

“Everything has come along nicely. I’m catching balls and hitting balls and everything now.”

The return of new-ball pair Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who were rested for last month’s one-day series in South Africa, has counted against Hastings.

Hastings said interim chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns told him the bad news this week by phone.

“He just said you haven’t really been playing much and the big boys were back,” Hastings said.

The inclusion of fast bowler Pat Cummins also made it hard to squeeze Hastings into the squad.

“I’ve taken the most one-day international wickets in the world this year so obviously I’m disappointed not to be there,” Hastings said.

“If they think those guys can do a better job that’s fair enough. I can cop that.

I’ve just got to go back and try to prove people wrong again.”

Australia will also host a one-day series against Pakistan in January.

“I’ll try to put some performances on the board in the Big Bash and then if something happens to one of the other bowlers in the one-day side then I’ll be ready,” Hastings said.
