A woman has died after being shot and an explosive device has reportedly been found as supporters of outgoing US President Donald Trump descended on the US Capitol.

Three other people died during the protests of "medical emergencies", Washington DC police confirmed, with officers making 52 arrests.

In dramatic scenes that drew international condemnation, supporters of the outgoing US president brought violence to the seat of America's democracy on Wednesday - prompting the US Capitol to be put into lockdown.

The White House revealed the US National Guard had been called in by Mr Trump following clashes between rioters and police, while a curfew has been ordered across the city.

As darkness fell, the FBI were also on the ground to clear remaining protesters.

Groups of Trump supporters breached metal barricades and stormed their way into the Capitol building as they disrupted the confirmation of US president-elect Joe Biden's victory in November's election - a fortnight before his inauguration ceremony.

According to an NBC report, several officials said at least one improvised explosive device had been found on US Capitol grounds.

And Mr Trump's Republican Party - parts of whom the president has criticised for failing to fully support his unproven claims of election fraud - revealed a suspicious device was found at their headquarters before being detonated by a bomb squad.

Both chambers of Congress in Washington DC were abruptly recessed as they debated Mr Biden's election win - which Mr Trump continues to vociferously dispute - when the violence flared.

US Vice President Mike Pence was ushered out of the Senate chamber to a secure location as protesters entered the Capitol building.

In a televised address, Mr Biden said America's democracy was "under unprecedented assault" as he condemned the "small number of extremists dedicated to lawlessness" who had brought "chaos" to the US Capitol.

"This is not dissent, it's disorder. It's chaos. It borders on sedition and it must end, now," Mr Biden added.

"I call on this mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward."

The president-elect called on Mr Trump to go on national television to "defend the constitution" and "demand an end to this siege".

Mr Trump chose to post a minute-long video posted to his Twitter account.

He did not explicitly condemn the scenes of violence, but urged those who had gathered at the US Capitol to disperse.

"I know your pain, I know your hurt - we had an election that was stolen from us," he said.

"It was a landslide election and everyone knows it, especially the other side."

Calling on his supporters to leave the US Capitol, the president added: "You have to go home now, we have to have peace, we have to have law and order, we have to respect our great people in law and order.

"We don't want anybody hurt, it's a very tough period of time - there's never been a period of time like this where such a thing happened, where they could take it away from all of us.

"From me, from you, from our country."

Twitter swiftly added a warning message to Mr Trump's video, which read: "This claim of election fraud is disputed, and this Tweet can't be replied to, Retweeted, or like due to a risk of violence."

Facebook and YouTube went further and removed Mr Trump's video completely.

"This is an emergency situation and we are taking appropriate emergency measures, including removing President Trump's video," said Facebook's vice-president for integrity, Guy Rosen.

"We removed it because on balance we believe it contributes to rather than diminishes the risk of ongoing violence."

Mr Trump later added in another tweet: "These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long."

The president lost November's election to Mr Biden by 306 Electoral College votes to 232.

He was also beaten by more than seven million votes in the popular vote.

Democrat senator Jeff Merkley said that officials had "rescued" Electoral College ballots from the Senate floor during Wednesday's session of Congress.

"If our capable floor staff hadn't grabbed them, they would have been burned by the mob," he posted on Twitter.

Mr Trump and the Republicans have now also lost control of the US Senate as well as the White House, after the Democrats on Wednesday won two runoff senate races in the state of Georgia that had been too close to call in the November elections.

Mr Pence had earlier called for the "violence and destruction" to stop and warned "this attack on our Capitol will not be tolerated and those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law".

The chaotic scenes came after Mr Pence had defied the president by saying he would not intervene in the confirmation of Mr Biden's victory by Congress.

Mr Trump turned on his vice-president, claiming Mr Pence "didn't have the courage to do what should have been done".

As the violence unfolded, Ivanka Trump - the president's daughter and adviser - deleted a tweet referring to "American Patriots" before she posted another tweet condemning "unacceptable" violence.

A 12-hour curfew, beginning from 6pm local time, was ordered in Washington DC by the city's mayor.

Former Republican president George W Bush said he and his wife, Laura, were "watching the scenes of mayhem... in disbelief and dismay".

"It is a sickening and heartbreaking sight," he said.

"This is how election results are disputed in a banana republic - not our democratic republic."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson condemned the "disgraceful scenes", adding: "The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power."

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: "Horrendous scenes from the US. These are not 'protesters' - this a direct attack on democracy and legislators carrying out the will of the American people."

NATO general secretary Jens Stoltenberg said: "The outcome of this democratic election must be respected."

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, posted on Twitter: "I believe in the strength of US institutions and democracy. Peaceful transition of power is at the core."

She added that Mr Biden "won the election" and said she would "look forward to working with him as the next President of the USA".

Mr Biden is due to be inaugurated as the next US president on 20 January, with a US Capitol ceremony set to take place where rioters gathered on Wednesday.

The woman shot and killed by police as protesters stormed the US Capitol has been named as 35-year-old Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt.

She served four tours of duty during her 14 years in the Air Force and was from San Diego, her husband Aaron told KUSI TV.

He said she was a strong supporter of President Trump.

"I'm numb. I'm devastated. Nobody from DC notified my son and we found out on TV," her mother-in-law, Robin Babbitt, told the New York Post.

Her brother-in-law, Justin Jackson, told NBC 7 he had been in contact with Washington police, but said they didn't tell him exactly what had led to the shooting.

He said: "Ashli was both loyal as well as extremely passionate about what she believed in. She loved this country and felt honoured to have served in our Armed Forces. Please keep her family in your thoughts and respect their privacy during this time."

Ms Babbitt was shot dead on Wednesday as she and other protesters stormed the Capitol building to disrupt the formal confirmation of Joe Biden's win in the presidential election.

She was shot by a plain-clothed police officer after breaching the building and attempting to enter the House chamber, said Washington Police Chief Robert Contee.

The shooting is being investigated by the force's internal affairs unit, which is responsible for investigating deaths involving officers.

Riot at US Capitol live: Congress formally confirms Biden victory - as four dead during riot

A fellow Trump supporter, who witnessed the shooting, told WUSA 9: "A number of police and secret service were saying 'get back, get down, get out of the way'.

"She didn't heed the call and as we kind of raced up to grab people and pull them back they shot her in the neck and she fell back on me.

"And she started to say 'it's fine, it's cool' and then she started kinda moving weird and blood was coming out of her mouth and neck and nose and I don't know if she's alive or dead any more."

He added: "I'm not injured... it could have been me, but she went in first."

Washington police confirmed another three people - a woman and two men - died during the violence from "medical emergencies".

Ms Babbitt went by the Twitter handle CommonAshSense.

The day before Wednesday's protest, she tweeted: "Nothing will stop us....they can try and try and try but the storm is here and it is descending upon DC in less than 24 hours....dark to light!"

She has also recently retweeted several pro-Trump messages, including a video by the president urging supporters to join the Washington march.

Responding to a tweet on Monday - by conservative author - Melissa Tate which said: "Landing in DC. Here to do God's work. Save the Republic #StopTheSteaI", Ms Babbitt replied: "I will be there tomorrow! Gods speed!"

This is domestic terrorism pure and simple, incited by the man at the top who cannot leave soon enough.

In the video Trump put out to belatedly stop the violence he incited, he said to the terrorists "I love you, you're very special."

Unbelievable scenes, it’s still difficult to fathom that such a thing could have occurred. Trump and his supporters are a disgrace.

It's not terrorism, as you yourself have said, it's being stoked by the head of the govt. This has been coming to a head for a while now, white America feels cheated out of their chance to roll back the years. The rust belts are still rusting, and Mexicans are still not fenced off.

The sound started softly, cheers and chants from supporters of President Donald Trump that could be heard from inside the US Capitol, not unusual when large-scale protests are staged on the grounds.

But the noise continued to grow louder, and the chants of protesters outside turned into the shouts of a mob inside, the soundtrack to the most troubling day I've witnessed on Capitol Hill.

On Wednesday, I stood in the cavernous spaces of the Rotunda and watched senators file through, leaving the House to consider an objection to the Electoral College vote count.

Vice President Mike Pence ignored me as I asked him what he had told Mr Trump at lunch the day before.

But when the senators were gone, the room grew quiet, and then the roar outside got louder.

I looked up at the mural on the ceiling, depicting George Washington ascending into heaven, to try to hear which direction the sound was coming from and realised it was coming from all sides.

I moved upstairs to a third-floor office, where I could see out over the West Lawn and down the National Mall, where four years ago I had watched as Mr Trump took the oath of office, thousands of people streaming down Pennsylvania Avenue in support.

The risers that had been constructed again to host Joe Biden's swearing-in were now covered in Trump supporters.

It became apparent, quickly, that the tone was changing. I watched as protesters streamed past barricades and walked up to the building.

The police, vastly outnumbered, watched.

And that's when the shouting began inside the building.

First, Capitol Police officers hurried into the hallway and began yelling at reporters to move away from the windows.

We complied, but we were still complacent with the sense of security that comes with being inside what I assumed was one of the safest buildings in the world.

I walked down the hallway towards the noise.

It was the sound of the crowd but, this time, coming from inside, echoing against the marble instead of seeping, slightly muffled, through the windows.

Another police officer appeared, telling me and another producer to take cover: The building had been breached.

I took shelter in the small fourth-floor workspace.

Up a winding set of stairs, it has the feeling of being in the Capitol attic.

There was a sense of panic and concern among the dozen reporters who were there.

Photos streamed in of rioters flooding the building.

I watched on a television screen as protesters moved about freely in the Rotunda, where I had just stood minutes before.

We realised the mob had made it to the third floor.

We decided to turn the lights off, to try to make it look as if no one was there. We barricaded the door.

And then we watched for every piece of information we could find, both to send back to our news organisations and to know what was happening outside our room.

Guns were drawn in the House; a woman was shot; random people were in the Senate; tear gas was in the ground-floor crypt.

I answered an onslaught of concerned texts. I called my husband, still at home with our eight-month-old.

It would be more than 2 and a half hours before the police would arrive to evacuate us.

Their radios continued to squawk with details of another group inside and calls for backup. It smelled of tear gas and smoke as we walked down the basement hallways, mingling with the remaining scent of lunch as we walked past the kitchens.

As dozens of armed police lined the hallways, we held our IDs up to prove we belonged there.

Taken to an undisclosed location, reporters sat on the floor, eating chicken or beef dinners that were passed around in plastic containers.

Senators shuffled in and out; staff members recalled sitting in dark offices while rioters banged on the doors.

Eventually, the saga ended, and we were allowed back into the Capitol.

As a line of lawmakers streamed back into the Senate chamber, I stopped Senator Chris *****, D-Del., who thinks that the nation will get through this moment and that "our democracy will be stronger for having survived Trump".

Then I asked Mr ***** whether he thought this would be the craziest day of his political career.

"I'm not convinced it is," he said. "He still has two more weeks in office."

Ab ki baar Trump sarkar....

That was absolutely disgraceful from the bigot, even by his lofty bigotry filled standards.....

I hope he gets impeached from office for this

even I liked about 50-60% of his policies but this is step too far

We can't support orange man at the of cost of American democracy, no policy is worth losing that

This is a step too far

Contrary to most of you guys, I didn’t need CNN or anybody else to tell me how much of a disaster this guy was going to be. His own statements, immoral business history, actions and inactions on certain things spoke volumes. I have been maintaining since day one he will be an unmitigated disaster and it’s absolutely appalling that it took such a loathsome tactic in his dying days as president to convince not only most people but even his own party and senior politicians.

I think he has scarred the American political landscape.. but I am sure we will soon recover from this mess and move on. All this latest fiasco has done is put the final nail in trumpism’s coffin.
Good riddance!

True but till then they will be the whipping boys coz they clearly seem to not be good with tech and innovation

Looks like we need the good guys in the USA army to go in kick some terrorists and restore democracy to this 3rd world country... ooo wait.

I’m low key scared.

These wiggas boutta do something else soon smh.

Lawmakers nearly came to blows on House floor last night
Two US congressmen had a minor scuffle on the floor of the House of Representatives around 02:00 EDT (07:00GMT) on Thursday as lawmakers were voting to certify Biden's win.

Republican Andy Harris of Maryland and Democrat Colin Allred of Texas had to be separated by congressional staff members, according to reporters.

The unrest came after four deaths earlier in the day at the Capitol, and while Pennsylvania Democrat Conor Lamb was addressing the chamber and accusing Republicans of having fueled the violent protests.

"It didn't materialise out of nowhere," said Lamb. "It was inspired by lies. The same lies that you're hearing in this room tonight."

Republicans shouted "sit down" and "get out of here" and called for his speech to be stricken from the record. Both Democrats and Republicans rose from their benches amid the shouting.

"The truth hurts!" Lamb yelled as Republicans objected to being characterised as liars, Fox News reports.

Fox notes that Harris is a 63-year-old US Navy veteran and Allred is a 37-year-old former NFL athlete.

Order was eventually restored when Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi banged her gavel, declaring: "The gentlemen will clear the chamber."

Boris Johnson says Trump 'completely wrong' to encourage rioters

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says President Donald Trump played a role in inciting yesterday's unrest.

“In so far as he encouraged people to storm the Capitol and in so far as the president consistently has cast doubt on the outcome of a free and fair election, I believe that that was completely wrong,” Johnson said.

"All I can say is that I'm very pleased that the president-elect has now been duly confirmed in office and that democracy has prevailed."

Some crazy pictures!

This is the norm in America now, after the BLM protests where the police were told to stand down and let the protesters ransack shops, burn buildings, destroy property and abuse anyone who did not agree with them. It was only a matter of time before it came back to bite. Even CNN ran that famous report of 'It is a mostly peaceful protest" whilst building were burning in the background. The dems did not at any time condemn the protesters for violence and destruction so they will find it hard to put a lid on it now.

Remember Seattle CHAZ, the police withdrew and allowed the protesters to take over part of the city, this was allowed so they could hurt Trump, people died and business were destroyed but no one cared because it made Trump look bad.

You cant put the toothpaste back in the tube. Now that is affecting the dems all of a sudden protesting is bad.

A bit like their foreign policy where they arm and equip some group and then lose control and end up at war, something Biden has done for the last 47 years.

How polarized is the US? If you thought India was bad, just look at these guys.

Everybody seems so buried in the political discourse and are foaming at the mouth. And it was the case even before the election.

Forget the Dems, most foreigners (desis, Europeans etc) did not condemn them as well because the equation was simple

Orange man bad
BLM against Orange man
BLM good

100% true.

The Democratic Party did not condemn BLM violence.

Democratic voters did not condemn BLM violence.

Looney left (inc users on PP) did not condem BLM violence.

The mainstream media did not condemn BLM violence.

Statues destroyed, shops looted, buildings vandalised, innocent dead, innocent injured, livelihoods destroyed, democracy undermined - all endorsed and supported by the looney left because they couldn't accept Trump's democratic win in 2016 coupled with a criminal who couldn't breathe.

Never will I accept the views on democracy, peace, and racial equality by the looney left again. Bunch of hypocritical violent supporting thugs who are the real enemies of democracy.

Go Trump! You stood against the establishment. You have 70M+ Americans supporting you, your vision is now an ideology - see you in 2024!

Domestic terrorism indeed.

Luckily a lot of them just ended up being idiots and took selfies inside the building.

No evidence of significant vote fraud, so there isn't even a justification for this. At least Trump will lose all credibility, the little that he did have.

I am a Dem voter and I condemn the BLM violence and so has any DEM I have talked to on the matter. I dont know how its it possible for any idiot to make such a generalized claim about millions of people who happened to vote for Biden.

Please educate yourself before going on idiotic rants like that.

Capitol riot: Democrats seek Trump's removal from office

US President Donald Trump's opponents in the two houses of Congress have called for him to be removed from office after the violent invasion of the Capitol by a mob of his supporters.

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer said Mr Trump should be removed immediately. If he is not, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says he could be impeached.

Removal would need Republican support and only a few have so far backed it.

Four people died during the riot, and 68 have now been arrested.

The actions of the police have come under greater scrutiny, with officers facing criticism for failing to stop the rioters breaking in.

The official responsible for security in the House of Representatives, the sergeant at arms, has now resigned. Mr Schumer has called for his counterpart in the Senate to be sacked.

President-elect Joe Biden said: "Nobody could tell me that if it was a group of Black Lives Matter protesters yesterday they wouldn't have been treated very differently than the thugs that stormed the Capitol."

Mr Trump himself has not spoken about what happened on Capitol Hill. However, his press spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said the president and his administration condemned the violence "in the strongest possible terms".

The head of the US Capitol Police (USCP) said his officers had faced "criminal riotous behaviour" and he described the officers' actions as "heroic".

Ms Pelosi, however, has called on him to resign and the DC Police Union said the leadership of the USCP was "ill-prepared for this attack in both manpower and in resources".

Transport Secretary Elaine Chao is the latest member of the Trump administration to quit in protest over the riots. Several lower-level officials have also resigned.

How have lawmakers responded?
A growing number have called for Mr Trump to be removed as president. Most of them are from Mr Biden's Democratic Party but a few Republicans have joined in.

"This president should not hold office one day longer," said Mr Schumer, who will lead the Democratic majority in the Senate when it begins its new session later this month.

He urged Mr Trump's cabinet to remove him from office using the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, which allows the vice-president to step up if the president is unable to perform his duties owing to a mental or physical illness.

It would require Vice-President Mike Pence and at least eight cabinet members to break with Mr Trump and invoke the amendment - something they have so far seemed unlikely to do.

Ms Pelosi described Mr Trump as "a very dangerous person" and said: "This is an emergency of the highest magnitude."

She left open the option of impeachment if Mr Trump's colleagues did not start 25th Amendment proceedings.

However, the Democrats would need to rely on the support of Republicans to secure the necessary two-thirds majority in the Senate to convict Mr Trump under the articles of impeachment in the constitution, and would be unlikely to get those numbers.

Congressman Adam Kinzinger from Illinois was one of the first Republicans to call for use of the 25th Amendment, saying: "Fires stoked by the president finally leapt out of the pan."

The Republican governors of Maryland and Vermont have also called for Mr Trump to be removed from office.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have said that Mr Trump's actions meet the amendment's requirements.

Separately, both the House and the Senate have adjourned until after Mr Biden is sworn in on 20 January.

Both houses would have to be recalled in order to start impeachment proceedings.

Several Trump administration officials have now resigned over the riots - Elaine Chao is the most high-profile.

Ms Chao, who has served through the whole presidency and is married to the top Senate Republican, Mitch McConnell, said the events had "deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside".

Others to quit include special envoy Mick Mulvaney, a senior national security official, and the press secretary to First Lady Melania Trump. A State Department adviser was also sacked after calling Mr Trump "unfit for office" in a tweet.

The president is also facing new restrictions on his use of social media. Facebook, which owns Instagram, has suspended him from both platforms at least until he leaves office and possibly indefinitely.

Twitter suspended his account for 12 hours.

What was the role of the police?
Police have been heavily criticised for their response to the violence.

Images captured inside the Capitol building showed rioters strolling through some of the corridors unimpeded. One man occupied Ms Pelosi's office, putting his feet up on her desk, while another was photographed walking out carrying a lectern.

Washington police say 68 people have so far been arrested, only one of them from the DC area.

One USCP officer has been placed on leave after a woman was shot dead on the floor of the House of Representatives. The woman, who has been named as air force veteran Ashli Babbitt, 35, was part of a group that forced its way into the chamber while it was still in session.

The FBI is now seeking to identify those involved in the rampage.

The Department of Justice says those arrested could face charges of seditious conspiracy, as well as rioting and insurrection.

One of those detained at the Capitol had a "military-style automatic weapon and 11 Molotov cocktails (petrol bombs)", according to the federal attorney for Washington DC.

On Thursday, crews began installing a non-scalable 7ft (2m) fence around the Capitol. It will remain in place for at least 30 days.

Idiots comparing rioters stealing from GUCCI store to the rioters in Capitol, big freaking difference. Imagine little melanin in those rioters they would have been shot already, white privilege at its finest. Law enforcement was so chill with them taking selfies is disgusting.

The double standards are appalling, aren’t they?

Violence is never justified. At least BLM has a genuine grievance. Some of their protests devolved into riots but even there we have this 17 year old in Kenosha running around with an assault rifle who killed someone and all the white community donated millions of dollars for his defense in court and now he is out on bail. The society, through their actions showed it’s ok to break law and order.

And here we have an attempted takeover of the election process and again some people are defending it.

Like van jones said, what if it was hundred of black people descending on DC.. what if it was hundreds of muslims. Will the authorities stand aside and take no action like some of them did here?

US President Donald Trump has committed to an "orderly" transition of power a day after his supporters stormed Congress, provoking world condemnation.

Mr Trump's remarks, posted on Twitter following a suspension, were widely seen as his first public acknowledgement of electoral defeat.

He spoke as top Democrats called for him to be removed from office.

Hours later, Capitol Police said one officer had died from injuries sustained during the riots.

Four others also died during the unrest. Officials said one Trump supporter was shot by police, while three died as a result of "medical emergencies".

The breach of the seat of US government led to the evacuation of shocked lawmakers, postponing for several hours their certification of US President-elect Joe Biden's victory over Mr Trump.

What did Trump say?

Mr Trump returned to Twitter on Thursday evening, following a 12-hour freeze of his account after the social media company said his tweets could stoke violence. In the clip he barely touched on his baseless claims of voter fraud, which had riled diehard supporters on Wednesday outside the White House.

"Now Congress has certified the results a new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th," he said.

"My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power. This moment calls for healing and reconciliation."

Mr Trump said he had "immediately deployed" the National Guard to expel the intruders, though some US media reported he had hesitated to send in the troops, leaving his vice-president to give the order.

He also praised his "wonderful supporters" and promised "our incredible journey is only just beginning".

The video message was the closest he has come to a formal acceptance of his defeat after weeks of falsely insisting he actually won the election in a "landslide".

In November, he tweeted about Mr Biden: "He won because the Election was Rigged." But shortly afterwards Mr Trump denied that remark had amounted to a concession of victory to his rival.

Who has resigned?

On Thursday evening, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos became the second cabinet member to quit following the Capitol riot.

In her resignation letter, Ms DeVos - one of the longest serving members of the president's administration - accused him of fomenting Wednesday's disorder.

"There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me," she wrote.

Earlier in the day, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao stepped down, saying she had been "deeply troubled" by the rampage.

Other aides to quit include special envoy Mick Mulvaney, a senior national security official, and the chief of staff to First Lady Melania Trump. A state department adviser was also sacked after calling Mr Trump "unfit for office" in a tweet.

Who's seeking to oust Trump?

The top congressional Democrats, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, are urging Vice-President Mike Pence and Mr Trump's cabinet to remove the president for "his incitement of insurrection".

"The President's dangerous and seditious acts necessitate his immediate removal from office," they said in a joint statement.

The duo called for Mr Trump to be ousted using the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, which allows the vice-president to step up if the president is unable to perform his duties owing to a mental or physical illness.

But it would require Mr Pence and at least eight cabinet members to break with Mr Trump and invoke the amendment - something they have so far seemed unlikely to do.

If the vice-president failed to act, Mrs Pelosi indicated she would convene the House to launch their second impeachment proceedings against Mr Trump.

However, to succeed in convicting and removing the president, Democrats would need a two-thirds majority in the Republican-controlled Senate, and there is no indication they would get those numbers.

The New York Times reported, quoting unnamed sources, that Mr Trump was considering granting a pardon to himself in the final days of his presidency. The legality of such a move is untested.

What was the role of the police?
Law enforcement have been heavily criticised after they were overrun by the protesters.

Mr Biden, a Democrat, said: "Nobody could tell me that if it was a group of Black Lives Matter protesters yesterday they wouldn't have been treated very differently than the thugs that stormed the Capitol."

Images captured inside the Capitol building showed protesters roaming through some of the corridors unimpeded.

However, one officer has been placed on leave after fatally shooting a female demonstrator in the House. Law enforcement told US media she was unarmed.

Washington police say 68 people have so far been arrested, only one of them from the DC area.

The FBI is seeking to identify those involved in the rampage.

The official responsible for security in the House of Representatives, the sergeant at arms, has resigned. Mr Schumer has called for his counterpart in the Senate to be sacked.

Reports say US Capitol Police (USCP) chief Steven Sund is also resigning, effective 16 January, following calls from Mrs Pelosi.

Five people have now been confirmed dead as a result of Wednesday's mayhem.

In a statement on Thursday night, US Capitol Police (USCP) announced the death of officer Brian Sicknick.

The officer was "injured while physically engaging with protesters" at the US Capitol and later collapsed. He was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

"The entire USCP Department expresses its deepest sympathies to Officer Sicknick's family and friends on their loss, and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague," the statement said.

It said his death would be investigated.

Ashli Babbitt, a 35-year-old US Air Force veteran from San Diego, California, was named as the woman fatally shot by a police officer.

Three others died after suffering unspecified medical emergencies on Capitol grounds, police said.

They were named as Benjamin Philips, 50, from Pennsylvania; Kevin Greeson, 55, from Alabama; and Rosanne Boyland, 34, from Georgia. Mr Greeson's family said he died of a heart attack.

Police said that 14 officers had been injured in the riot.

A police officer has died from injuries suffered when supporters of Donald Trump stormed Congress, bringing the number of lives lost in the riot to five.

Brian Sicknick was hurt "while physically engaging with protesters", according to police.

He later collapsed and was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Trump promises 'smooth transition of power'

An investigation has been launched into the death of the officer, who joined the US Capitol Police (USCP) in 2008.

The force said in a statement: "The entire USCP Department expresses its deepest sympathies to Officer Sicknick's family and friends on their loss, and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague."

Democratic leaders of the House Appropriations Committee said the "tragic loss" of the officer "should remind all of us of the bravery of the law enforcement officers who protected us, our colleagues, congressional staff, the press corps and other essential workers'' during the takeover of the Capitol building by the pro-Trump mob.

Mr Trump has condemned the violence, saying the rioters must be held accountable.

It is time for global action to guard democracies against weaponised lies

Four other people also lost their lives during the clashes, including a female Trump supporter who was shot dead by police and three people who died from medical emergencies.

After a rally where Mr Trump repeated claims of vote rigging and said "we will never concede", hundreds of supporters stormed the Capitol building, forcing senators and members of the House of Representatives to flee as they smashed windows and looted.

In the wake of the violence, both US transportation secretary Elaine Chao and education secretary Betsy DeVos resigned, joining a growing list of aides leaving the outgoing administration in protest.

As opponents demanded his immediate removal from office, Mr Trump conceded defeat to Joe Biden for the first time, acknowledging in a video that a "new administration" would be sworn in on 20 January and vowing to ensure a "smooth transition".

The president-elect has branded those who besieged the US Capitol as "domestic terrorists" and said Wednesday's violence was an "assault on our liberty".

They incited stupid supporters to go charge the Capitol Hill and then watched the whole thing unfold with grins on their faces from their bunker, partying it up, drinking, listening to music.

Welcome to America! Where apparently freedoms are in terrible danger every four years and the people who tell you that mostly live it up in their private spaces.

Thank you, Trump and Co, you have once again shown us the reality!

I look forward with interest to the day when we may see similar polarisation in Australia which is of course a very multicultural nation these days.

Some Hollywood drama :))

The Capitol is the 3rd most secure building in America, the police broke their lines and allowed them to enter. Other police were taking selifies with them. Most were Trump supporters but not all.

The aim was to shut up Trump and his mates once and for all, which has worked. Shooting dead a woman with no weapons was a sign to other Trump supporters.

AS long as the Yanks keep killing others inside their own broken nation and stop killing people in other lands, its not a bad thing.

Not saying there aren't American Modi bhakts in the Trump bandwagon but in this instance the India flag guy is Vincent Xavier seen in photos with Congress leaders and going by posting history fervently anti-BJP/RSS/Modi. Some Indian Christians involved in missionary activities are close to GOP since they get lots of funding from them, also moral support, backing etc. People like them are in the Congress/Left camp in India but when it comes to US/Europe, they tend to support the RW there.

lol. Im not invested like you. I dont care two hoots for Trump or Biden or Obama or the US.

Im just calling it out as I see, great viewing for the rest of the world. The downfall of Yankistan is very much in motion. No wonder the WEF have predicted by 2030 US will no longer be a superpower, a great relief for the planet.

Make up your mind, will you!

Which is it? Americans are too stupid to be a world super power anymore or ...
As it seemed you were alleging too dastardly evil to stage Hollywood level scams to oust their president?

Time to pick a side and not sit on the fence on these issues. Prolonged sitting on the fence can cause chaffing and splinters to get into the most unfortunate of places...

You dont need to be genius to allow protesters into any building, the police lines broke via orders when there was no need.

Ive just told you I have no side in this, Im not a Yank, I dont live in America, I dont vote. Im neutral. How hard is this to understand.

Instead of worrying about me, explain some of the points I have raised?

Well you are not doing a very good job of explaining yourself.. it all sounds like conspiracy theories without any logic to me. On one hand you seem to be suggesting this was a grand scheme to oust trump. On the other hand you seem to think US is on the way out as a super power. Most Pakistanis who write such crap here have absolutely no clue about America’s inner workings and politics and they just like to spout baba ji ki baatein style nonsense to appear extra smart.

Why don’t you explain yourself who or why was the crowd allowed to enter? It seems you are suggesting this was done to make trump look bad. Did you follow the steam of events leading up to that moment? Did you know he held a rally right across the street and incited his supporters to charge the building? Do you know that if Dems were behind it, all their senators and congressmen were inside the building.. are you suggesting they purposefully put themselves in harm’s way just to make trump look bad? Do you follow what I am trying to say here?

Now the other side of it is your first point.. we are just incompetent and truly on the way down. We could not plan for such an insurrection. I would suggest that sounds much more plausible than your other completely contradictory conspiracy theory of the whole thing being fabricated by some evil liberal sitting in the background petting his bald cat and chuckling over the whole thing.

Hope that made sense because I honestly had difficult following your multiple contradicting trains of thought.

lol. You seems stressed over the whole Trump term and issue, chill , your life isnt going to change. Again, dont worry what I think, play the ball not the man.

Both are different issues, US no longer being a superpower and the police breaking the lines. If you cant understand the context , one is referring to the event, the other the longer term position of the country. A child would understand this.

Just answer these points.

1. Why did the police break their lines and allow the protesters into the building?

2. Why were some police taking selfies with the protesters?

3. Why was a woman shot dead when she wasnt armed at all?

4. Why did some politicians who were going to side with Trump claiming their seats were rigged, change their mind after the incursion?

If you want a debate, debate the points of the subject not what you think some Pakistanis writing crap, because I think that of you too but its not relevant is it.

This is not how this work, mate. You are alleging something sinister and conspiratorial, so you have to explain to me what happened not the other way around. I’ve already told you it’s just incompetence. The white guards are blue collared workers, mostly without college degrees and most likely some of them belong to trump’s base and believe the rioters were exercising their right to protest as the RW media pushes down their throat day in and day out. They thought the actions of the mob were justified. Some
Of them most likely didn’t think that but they were outnumbered and didn’t want to risk their lives. One cop did and got hit in the head with a fire extinguisher. He died earlier today.

The woman that was shot dead was charging the guards .. maybe one of them felt threatened. This happens all the time in the US how black people are shot while resisting or sometimes not even resisting arrest.

And do I even have to answer the last one? What happened is unprecedented. Lives were lost. This is quite clear most Americans are absolutely disgusted with the whole thing. For any politician to have a political career, they have to distance themselves from this controversy. It’s politics 101.

Let’s see if your explanations hold any water to mine and then we can discuss.... but I really wanna hear your side.. answer your own questions here with justifications.. not innuendo!

Some would have you believe this was all a drama to get trump out when he is in his bunker watching the whole thing with a smile on his face.. unbelievable how some desi brothers have jello minds here.. I guess being a trumper is a fashion for some desis .. believing in the QAnon, flat earth, corona vaccine microchipping conspiracy theory nuts galore around here.
Kids these days!!

Im not alleging anything lol. Cant you get it through your head, I dawwntt give aaah daaammnn.

1. Guards are dumb, not educated? lol. This is the Capitol building , it's protected against terrorism esp with politicians inside. To say the security is weak in such a place is ingorance.

3. Many were charging but shooting someone who has no weapons is plain wrong and murder. If what you say is correct they all should been shot dead.

4. Agree, the event forced them to distance themselves, change their looney tunes.

I dont have a side, im calling out what I saw and have replied.

My sincere advice, dont worry too much of US politics they are all clowns, Sleepy Joe isnt going to change the country for the better. Blacks and Rednecks will continue to kill each other, the country will continue to further dragged into debt and continue to become a lauhging stock to the likis of Russia and China. Or perhaps you could run for office? :)

You talk a lot for someone who doesn’t seem to explain himself very well. I know you don’t care you have said that a dozen times however you still have not given explanation for what you feel happened here? I have a few words to describe people who talk talk talk but are unable to properly explain themselves. Let’s just say most of them end up working security guard kind of jobs.

Try again, bud.. I’m sure you can do it. Why do you think the guards really let the crowd through? Why and for what reason was a woman shot?

Still waiting!

Who are you suggesting told them to stand down and why? You can’t speak cryptic here.. be clear and concise.. back your argument with evidence. It’s simple college English 101. This is not 4chan or qanons r us.
Also why was the woman shot?

Im not suggesting anything. Im saying they were told to stand down, this is a fact not an opinion.

I was wondering since you know it all, why would the police be told to stand down allowing domestic terrorists into the Capitol while politicians were inside? If you dont know, just say.

That’s not the point. I keep repeating myself. You are not doing yourselves any favors. As far as I know nobody knows why they were told to stand down. But somehow from somewhere you happen to have inside info as to why they were told to do so. So I am asking you can you enlighten us please? Why were they told to do so and who told them? You had claimed at the top of this argument this was a drama to get trump out. Do you have any evidence of that?
Is it not possible that trump himself made it happen so his supporters could really get in and make the front news? After all it’s all about pomp and show with him.. situations like this always go for the simplest explanation. None of trumps family members and close allies were in the building and neither was he. Everybody in there was endangered except him. So who do you think benefits here?

Also you have still not answered the question about that woman being shot. Who shot her and why? What’s your Sherlock Holmsian theory about that tragedy? Biden shot her? Or was it Kamala?

lol. I never suggested any inside info, you're looking for things that are not present out of your emotional feelings for Trump, Biden and the current issues.

You also dont know who shot her, fine. Neither do I, all I know is she was unarmed.

You dont know, great. Thanks. Its all a mystery. :)

Dont stress yourself over anything related to this circus, as it's not coming to an end soon. We are just watching for entertainment and thankful America has its own problems meaning the rest of the world can be a safer place. Btw I said dont watch the channel.

I dont agree with everything she says but an interesting alternative prospective and insight on the event. Biden fans need not get their pants in a twist, it's just another opinion.

Americans couldn't call their own state in their elections. They based their predictions on who their friends and family voted for on their street.

That's how disconnected they really are. So what what would they know?

I feel sorry for the black Americans, just like when Obama was elected they cried with tears of joy thinking their lives would change for the better but have only become worse. Again now they will hope and be disappointed. Prob the most brainwashed population in history.

5th generation warfare. Out of your league

Dont stress yourself over anything related to this circus, as it's not coming to an end soon. We are just watching for entertainment and thankful America has its own problems meaning the rest of the world can be a safer place. Btw I said dont watch the channel.

You guys literally live in Boris Johnson's circus and unlike in America, the conservatives will rule Britain for years to come as even the urban white people in the UK support conservatism

2016: "Coddled, crybaby liberals continue to freak out over President-elect Donald Trump's huge victory"

2020: Biden wins by the same amount in the electoral college, and by 7 million in the popular vote too :)))

'QAnon Shaman' Jake Angeli charged over pro-Trump riots

A prominent follower of the baseless conspiracy theory QAnon has been charged over the US Capitol riots.

Jacob Anthony Chansley, known as Jake Angeli, is in custody on charges including violent entry and disorderly conduct.

Mr Chansley, who calls himself the QAnon Shaman, is allegedly the man pictured with a painted face, fur hat and horns inside Congress on Wednesday.

Donald Trump faces another impeachment charge for his role in the unrest.

Democrats accuse the president of encouraging the riots, in which five people died.

The FBI has been appealing to the public to help bring the assailants to justice.

Mr Chansley has not commented publicly on the charges.

A statement from the federal attorney for Washington DC said: "It is alleged that Chansley was identified as the man seen in media coverage who entered the Capitol building dressed in horns, a bearskin headdress, red, white and blue face paint, shirtless, and tan pants.

"This individual carried a spear, approximately 6 feet in length, with an American flag tied just below the blade."

The statement said police had also detained a man from Florida believed to have been photographed carrying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's lectern from the House of Representatives chamber.

Adam Johnson, 36, is being held on charges including one count of theft of government property and one count of violent entry.

Also among those charged is West Virginia lawmaker, Derrick Evans. He is alleged to have posted a video of himself online, standing outside the building with Trump supporters, and then going inside.

He was arrested on Friday and is also accused of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol Grounds, the Department of Justice statement said.

More than a dozen people have now been charged in offences related to the assault on the Capitol building. They include an Alabama man allegedly found with 11 Molotov cocktails near the unrest.

Mr Trump is due to leave office in 11 days. Democrats in the House of Representatives plan to introduce an article of impeachment against him on Monday, for "incitement of insurrection".

A White House spokesperson said impeaching the president at this late stage would only further divide the country.

He was front and center in the riot and he is already claiming he did it at the request of the president. Haha!

Hilarious!

US prosecutors now believe supporters of President Donald Trump planned to “capture and assassinate elected officials” in their siege of the Capitol building last week, according to a new court filing.

The filing, submitted by Justice Department lawyers late on Thursday, sought the detention of Jacob Chansley of Arizona, the QAnon conspiracy theorist who was photographed wearing horns standing at the desk of Vice President Mike Pence in the chamber of the US Senate.

“Strong evidence, including Chansley’s own words and actions at the Capitol, supports that the intent of the Capitol rioters was to capture and assassinate elected officials in the United States government,” prosecutors wrote.

The detention memo, written by Justice Department lawyers in Arizona, goes into greater detail about the FBI’s investigation into Chansley, revealing that he left a note for Pence warning that “it’s only a matter of time, justice is coming”.

A public defender representing Chansley could not be reached immediately for comment. Chansley is due to appear in a federal court on Friday.

The prosecutors’ assessment comes as they and federal agents have begun bringing more serious charges tied to violence at the Capitol, including revealing cases on Thursday against one man, retired firefighter Robert Sanford, on charges that he hurled a fire extinguisher at the head of one police officer and another, Peter Stager, of beating a different officer with a pole bearing an American flag.

In Chansley’s case, prosecutors said the charges “involve active participation in an insurrection attempting to violently overthrow the United States government”, and warned that “the insurrection is still in progress” as law enforcement prepares for more demonstrations in Washington, DC and state capitals.

They also suggested he suffers from drug abuse and mental illness, and told the judge he poses a serious flight risk.

“Chansley has spoken openly about his belief that he is an alien, a higher being, and he is here on Earth to ascend to another reality,” they wrote.

The Justice Department has brought more than 80 criminal cases in connection with the violent riots at the US Capitol last week, in which Trump’s supporters stormed the building, ransacked offices and in some cases, attacked police.

The filing gives further insight into the FBI inquiry on the day of chaos, which left elected officials holed up fearing for their lives and at least five people dead, including one police officer.

Many of the people charged so far were easily tracked down by the FBI, which has more than 200 suspects, thanks in large part to videos and photos posted on social media.

Michael Sherwin, the acting US attorney for the District of Columbia, has said while many of the initial charges may seem minor, he expects much more serious charges to be filed as the Justice Department continues its investigation.

In a bipartisan vote, Trump was impeached on Wednesday for “incitement of insurrection” by egging on a huge crowd of his supporters to march on Congress.

The centre of Washington, DC was in lockdown early on Friday as more than 20,000 armed National Guard troops were mobilised after officials warned of the threat of more violence at the presidential inauguration of Joe Biden on January 20, as well as in state capitals.
