People have to understand that lifelong republicans will almost always vote for their party. Irrespective of the presidential candidate... it's the same way fir the Democrats.

That's why any election will be close and emphasis is always on the college states.
Not many presidents lose a second term and when you have such a polarised electorate it was always going to be close.

You have to be morally corrupt and a liar to claim one side predicted a landslide

Donald Trump says he will be going to the Supreme Court over the election result

He claims a "major fraud" is being committed on the American people - without explaining how.

"This is a major fraud on our nation," he says. "We want the law to be used in a proper manner.- so we will be going to the US Supreme Court.
"We want all voting to stop. We don't want them to find any ballots at 4am and add them to the list.
"It is a very sad moment."
He adds: "We will win this, and as far as I am concerned - we already have won it."

Biden: 'We have lawyers on standby'

Joe Biden's team say if Donald Trump goes to the court to prevent "proper tabulation of votes", as he threatened earlier this morning, the Democrats will have lawyers on standby.

In a statement, Mr Biden's campaign manager, Jen O'Malley Dillon said: "We repeat what the Vice President said tonight: Donald Trump does not decide the outcome of this election. Joe Biden does not decide the outcome of this election.

"The American people decide the outcome of this election. And the democratic process must and will continue until its conclusion.

"Nearly 100 million people cast their ballot before Election Day in the belief — and with the assurances from their state election officials - that their ballot would be counted.

"Now Donald Trump is trying to invalidate the ballot of every voter who relied on these assurances.

"If the president makes good on his threat to go to court to try to prevent the proper tabulation of votes, we have legal teams standing by ready to deploy to resist that effort. And they will prevail."

I think you all need to rewatch Trump's speech. He was refering to ballots added to the count after the polling stations closed. Hence he wants the SC to stop the counting.
 
Absentee ballots favor Biden and will push him over the line in the rust belt. America's 4 year nightmare is finally coming to an end.

Because it is Trump people dont know how to react sensibly.

As an example some are claiming Trump has declared himself the winner, he never has.

Some say he wants to prevent the last votes from being counted, he doesent.

He is exercising his rights just like everyone else has, the dems have relentlessly taken every decision of Trump to the courts and now its a problem.

He is protecting the system, get the lawyers and authorities in there now before any extra votes can appear. He is not stopping anything he is making sure everything is done properly.

He's made it pretty clear that he doesn't want any ballots that arrive this morning/after counted. I.e he wants loads of legally made votes discarded. If that's not voter suppression I'm not sure what is.

Yup, the Democrats want to add votes after the polls close. How is that even fair? It's like playing a game on Monday, but adding the score 2 weeks later!

Because that is what the supreme court declared were the rules in the relevant states and what people were told was the requirement for their vote to be counted. Unfair would be changing the rules after the election to prevent people's legally made vote (on election day) from being counted.
 
Facebook warns users about Trump victory claim

Facebook has responded to President Trump’s unsubstantiated statement of victory in the election.

“Once President Trump began making premature claims of victory, we started running top-of-feed notifications on Facebook and Instagram so that everyone knows votes are still being counted and the winner has not been projected,” a Facebook spokesperson told NBC News.

Millions of legitimate votes are still being counted in the crucial swing states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin and others which could still determine the outcome of the election. Election officials say it could be days before the winner in these states is confirmed.

Earlier, Twitter took similar steps to counter misleading information surrounding the election result. It placed a warning on a tweet from Trump in which he said, without evidence, that "they are trying to STEAL the Election".

Strike that. Just learned there was an error in reporting in Fairfax County. It will mean subtracting about 100K from the Biden total there. The Board of Elections site has not been corrected yet.

Trump seems to have pulled it off. With a lead in key states and most of the votes counted, it's merely a formality to count the remaining little votes.
 
I think Trump has enough votes to clinch the election. Trump is leading in most of the pending states.

Right, so now there's tangible results to sink our teeth into I'll do some analysis.

- The partisan distribution between Election Day votes and mail ballots has played out as expected. Republicans generally turned up on the day hence their initial leads - Democrats have a big advantage amongst mail-in voters which are now being counted.

- Mail ballots would've been counted earlier in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania but Republican controlled State Legislatures blocked the counting of mail ballots before Election Day.

- Democrats should very disappointed with the Senate race and Chuck Schumer should resign. Instead of pouring funds into long shots like Kentucky, Kansas, Texas and South Carolina - they should've razor focused on North Carolina, Maine and Iowa. GOP will likely retain the Senate and we're in for another era of Divided Government.

- Cuban Americans, often descendants of landlords from the Batista era (no not the wrestler...) who left after the Castro Revolution, moved significantly to Trump's anti-socialist message and won Florida. This is why the notion of a monolithic "Latino vote" is wrong.

- Pollsters miss the mark again - especially in the Senate race. Okay it's a unique election in a pandemic and record breaking turnout, but Trump has definitely outperformed expectations. Personally it's sad more voters have broken for Trump in 2016 given his botched handling of Coronavirus and of racial tensions, I call a spade a spade and credit the GOP ground game. They knocked on doors and registered voters.

- Flipping Arizona is big for Biden. It means if he holds Nevada - he only needs Michigan and Wisconsin to get 270.

- Biden is likely to make up the deficit in Pennsylvania and possibly Georgia, and hold his lead in Nevada, Wisconsin and Michigan. Reason is the ongoing counts are mainly in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania, Atlanta, Milwaukee and Detroit where there are large populations of African-Americans, and of the mail ballots which favour Biden.

You're out of touch. Trump didn't lose Arizona cause of dissing McCain, he lost cause of the huge Latino vote and increasing population of Asian/Desis and Californian transplants.

Nothing to do with the fact AZ voted a democratic senator 2 years ago. The state didn't turn blue on election night, turned blue 2 years ago, before Trump's comments.

There is a risk, especially in red states. I think biden got this, unless it goes to the supreme court
 
It is rallies, protests if liberals do it and riots if Conservatives do it lol.

Pennsylvania race is fascinating. At least 500k postal votes from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh still to count, expected to be mostly for Biden, which may overturn Trump’s lead.
 
America's electoral college system - a reminder

The president of the United States doesn't win by getting the most votes nationwide in America. Instead, the candidates are trying to win the majority of what's called the electoral college votes.

These are essentially points assigned to each state, roughly based on their population. Some have more electoral college votes (California has 55) and some have fewer (Alaska has three).

In most states, the candidate who wins the popular vote is awarded all of that state's electoral college votes. As there are 538 in total, a count of 270 wins the presidency.

So it is possible to lose the overall popular vote, and still be elected president by carrying key states - even by a slim margin. That was the case in 2016, when Trump won the election even though his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, got nearly three million more individual votes. Here’s how the system works in more detail.

Joe Biden is closing in on Donald Trump in the key battleground of Georgia, hoping to flip a third state from the Republicans and put himself within touching distancing of the White House.

The Democrat challenger is now 31,000 votes behind - a much smaller gap than the 372,000 he trailed behind by 24 hours ago - as counting continues in a series of knife-edge elections.
 
More details on the differing tallies

Earlier we explained how some news organisations have different tallies on electoral college votes so far.

The BBC is getting its data via Reuters, from polling firm Edison Research, who do the field work for the exit polls and work with US networks in the National Election Pool.

Edison Research said that it will not call a race in Wisconsin or any state where the margin is narrow enough to allow a candidate to demand a recount under state law.

Arizona: An automatic recount will occur if the margin between candidates is less than or equal to 0.1% of the votes.

Georgia: Candidates may request a recount when the spread between the candidates is less than 1% of the total votes cast in that race.

Wisconsin: By law, if race is within 1%, the candidate with fewer votes may request a recount.

Some news sites have projected wins in Arizona (meaning an extra 11 electoral college votes) and Wisconsin (10 electoral college votes) for Joe Biden.
 
I think it’s game over for trump. He will take it to the courts and lose. His people will. Riot for a week or two and then go home.

Georgia update

There are now roughly 60,000 votes left to count and Donald Trump is leading by 18,144.

His lead has closed very slightly from 18,586 earlier and it looks like it will be tight in the swing state.

Officials have said they expect to be able to announce a result later today.
 
It all comes down to Nevada. Mere 7000 votes divide the two and there are still many left to be counted. Whoever wins Nevada here will win the race. Georgia, Pennsylvania, Alaska, North Carolina will all go to Trump. I think Biden will win Nevada.

If Biden takes Nevada, where he is beginning to extend his lead as more votes are being counted as we speak, and if he holds his 2.4% lead in Arizona, it's game over. That'll be 270 exactly. Pennsylvania, Georgia and NC can all go to Trump and will leave him with just 268.
 
Update from Georgia

Donald Trump now leads Georgia by just 1,709 votes.

If Mr Biden does end up winning Georgia, its 16 electoral votes would take him just one shy of the 270 he needs to win the presidency.

Joe Biden's lead in Arizona has risen slightly to 47,052 votes.

Unlike other key states yet to declare, Donald Trump has been the one closing the gap here - so this latest update bucks that trend.
Mr Trump had been tightening the gap because Arizona has a very robust system of early voting, as explained by Sky's Helen-Ann Smith, who is in Phoenix, earlier.

Four in five voted early in the 2018 midterms, so the state is used to it, and the mail-in ballots this time round have already been counted.

Most of the remaining ballots are likely to be those who voted late on election day, which are more likely to be Republican and are therefore helping Donald Trump close the gap.

Arizona is worth 11 electoral votes - winning here would take Mr Biden to 264 (six away from the presidency) and Mr Trump to 225 (45 away from the presidency).
 
Update from Georgia - Trump's lead cut to less than 1,000 votes

Joe Biden is continuing to close the gap in this key battleground state.

Donald Trump's lead is now just 1,267 votes with 99% of the votes in.

Both presidential candidates are now neck and neck with around 49.4% of the vote each.

But the questions remains - are there enough votes left for the Democrat to take over the lead from the president - and if he does, will it be big enough to avoid a recount?

Update from Pennsylvania - Trump's lead narrows to below 20,000 for the first time

With 96% of the votes counted, Joe Biden is closing in on Donald Trump in the state which is worth 20 Electoral College votes.

Mr Trump now has 49.5% of the vote, and Mr Biden is on 49.2%. It's a wafer-thin margin.

There are still lots of votes to be counted yet, specifically in Philadelphia, a Democrat stronghold.
 
Update from Georgia - Trump now leads by just 665 votes

Joe Biden continues to claw back votes in this key battleground state, where Donald Trump's lead has been cut to just 665 votes, with 99% of the ballots in.

Both candidates remain neck and neck on 49.4%.

It's going down to the wire. Just a handful of votes could decide who takes the state.

Update from Georgia - Biden increases his lead over Trump

Joe Biden is continuing to slowly build up a small lead in the key battleground state, and is now 1,096 votes ahead of Donald Trump there.

Both candidates remain neck and neck on 49.4%.

But the question remains - if the Democrat stays ahead and wins the state, will the vote be big enough to avoid a recount?

Georgia - 99% of votes in, both Joe Biden and Donald Trump are neck and neck
Pennsylvania - 96% of votes counted, Donald Trump has a 0.3% lead
Arizona - 90% of votes in, Joe Biden has a 1.6% lead
Nevada - 89% of votes counted, Joe Biden has a 0.9% lead
North Carolina - 95% of votes in, Donald Trump has a 1.4% lead
Joe Biden is slowly increasing his lead in Georgia and narrowing the gap in Pennsylvania where more mail-in votes are being counted.
The Democrat challenger leads the counts in Arizona and Nevada.

The president leads in North Carolina.
 
Biden team 'elated' at battleground breakthroughs - but Trump staff say election not over yet

Joe Biden has overtaken Donald Trump by the smallest of margins in two key battleground states, as the race for the White House goes down to the wire.

The Democrat candidate jumped into first place in Republican-held Georgia and Pennsylvania, meaning if he can stay out in front he will clinch the US presidency.

Counting is still underway, with the results due to be updated throughout the day by election administrators.

Sky News understands Mr Biden's campaign are "thrilled" at the latest development, with campaign staff said to be "elated" and "confident".

But Mr Trump's team are insisting "this election is not over".

They vowed to challenge the Georgia result because they are "confident we will find ballots improperly harvested" - though cited no evidence - and claimed there are "many irregularities" in the Pennsylvania count.

Despite their attempts to delay a result, it looks like a nail-biting finish is in sight as the race to get to 270 Electoral College votes enters its final stretch.

Mr Biden is on 253 - and if he picks up 20 more with highly-prized Pennsylvania, he will win the White House and make Mr Trump the first one-term president since George HW Bush.

Even without the Rust Belt jewel, Mr Biden would still get over the line with two of Nevada, Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina.

In Georgia, a recount will get underway due to the race being so tight.

Arizona update - Biden's lead shrinks

With 92% of the vote now counted, Joe Biden's lead in Arizona has shrunk to 43,569 votes or 1.4%.

This means Mr Biden has 50% of the votes, while Donald Trump has 48.6%.

The latest votes are from Maricopa county, where the president has won roughly 55% of the vote. If he is to catch up to Mr Biden, he will need to win 58% of the remaining ballots.
