US President Joe Biden has approved a $735 million sale of precision-guided weapons to Israel, the Washington Post has reported.

According to the paper, Congress was officially notified of the proposed sale on 5 May - almost a week before the current violence began.

Some of Biden's fellow Democrats are now criticising the sale, the paper reports.

One Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee told the paper that "allowing this proposed sale of smart bombs to go through without putting pressure on Israel to agree to a ceasefire will only enable further carnage."

So here we go - nothing changes.

Cannot believe how they can have the blood of innocents on their conscience

Why did you ever think anything would change? Biden is the part of the same Dem-Repub Establishment that started or helped start the Iraq, Afghan, Libya, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen wars.

4 years of Trump was a break from all these wars being started in the 21st century.

Good to remember that Biden has put the leading neocon Victoria Nuland in a senior position in the State Department.

This warmonger Biden and Obama the Obomber are wolves in sheep's clothing.

Baghal me churi, moonh me Ram Ram.

America sells arms to all Nations. How and for what purpose they are used is entirely up to the Nation that is buying them.

If Palestinians can dole enough money to Americans, they can also buy arms. Money always carries the heaviest hammer.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Monday criticised U.S. President Joe Biden's approval of weapons sales to Israel, saying the United States was "writing history with bloody hands" in reference to violence between Israel and Palestinians.

Biden's administration approved on Monday the potential sale of $735 million in precision-guided weapons to Israel, according to congressional sources.

Or is this some attempt to reign in Israel, using the arms sales as a carrot?

One would hope that, as 46 is probable a one—term POTUS, he won’t be scared of losing Bible Belt votes and will put pressure on Netenyahu. Refuse to deliver the weapons until a ceasefire.

They are not selling. It is being gifted to them as part of 4b annual dole. They are also given top of the line weaponry which is often denied to their NATO partners to maintain qualitative edge over all other players in the region.

Haha palestinians can buy arms from usa? Do you listen to what you say?

Even if they had the money which they dont usa would be the last country to sell them weapons

This is a people under occupation and heavy military israel control , they have no real control over their finances or land They havr what israel lets them have

To say something like the above just shows how very little you know about whats really going on

It's not a carrot. Coming at a time like this, it simply is a signal of where the US stands on this issue.

Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar may get a lot of publicity, but the behavior of the Democratic Party is very predictable when it comes to supporting Israel in every way possible.

Money always wins. Palestinians are broke. They have to rely on home made stuff with help from Iran and friends.

US sells weapons to Saudis because they pay heavy money for it. If Palestinians can afford, they can also buy from USA. No country is going to say no to a billion dollars.

US President Joe Biden has voiced his support for a ceasefire after eight days of violence between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza.

Mr Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US was working with Egypt and other countries on halting hostilities.

But the US again blocked a UN Security Council statement calling for a cessation of violence.

The conflict is now in its second week, with little sign of ending.

At least 212 people, including 61 children, have died in Gaza, and 10, including two children, in Israel.

Israel says most of those killed in Gaza are militants and that any civilian deaths are unintentional.

But Hamas, the militant group that runs the territory, disputes this.

According to a White House statement, Mr Biden "encouraged Israel to make every effort to ensure the protection of innocent civilians".

"The two leaders discussed progress in Israel's military operations against Hamas and other terrorist groups in Gaza," it added.

President Biden "expressed his support for a ceasefire and discussed US engagement with Egypt and other partners towards that end", it said.

The violence has prompted increasing concern internationally.

World leaders and humanitarian organisations have called for measures to prevent the deaths of residents and the chaos wrought by the destruction of buildings and infrastructure.

The US has - for the third time - blocked efforts at the UN Security Council to issue a statement calling on Israel to stop its military offensive, stressing instead its own diplomatic efforts.

"Our calculation at this point is that having those conversations behind the scenes ... is the most constructive approach we can take," White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.

I'd suggest reading some more on history and geopolitics. I notice a lot of Indian Hindus on here tend to have a very simplistic linear understanding of geopolitics. Even if Palestine had the money they wouldn't be able to all the best arms and defense systems from the US, I'd tell you why but I'd let you do your homework and then come back.

Biden is a hardcore Zionist who would sell America to protect Israel then why would he not give them as much money as Israel wants. Meanwhile, Muslim's in particular Arab's are having useless OIC meetings. Even our own pacifist PM has only delivered a standard condemnation of events, he may as well say "Israel has the right to defend itself".

Interesting that a lot of Democrat voter base is turning further away from a Pro Israeli stance and the Palestinian case is gathering enough support among them. Such deals will always happen but atleast there is awareness around it. See the calls for ceasefire also strengthening.

Whether this'll be strong enough in the coming years to turn into votes for Pro Palestinian candidates is unlikely but its the best bet for Palestine to get some international attention towards the illegal occupation seeing how US still doesnt fully condemn it. But yeah nothing will happen yet under Biden though

46 will be under pressure from Jewish Democrats and progressive Democrats like AOC, to try to influence Netenyahu to behave with more restraint.

Jewish Democrats will pressure Biden to make Netanyahu behave with more restraint? Your knowledge of US politics is very poor.

Would tend to agree. That Biden is approving arms sales to Israel at such a time tells it's own story. I must say I was surprised to read it. I had no idea how firmly entrenched Zionism was in America, I thought it was mostly conspiracy theory realm, but it's there in black and white to be honest.

And there’s me thinking liberal Jews would not necessarily be for Israel expansion.

If not USA, they could buy from Russia, China, France etc. When you have no money, your options are ZERO.

And that is why hamas is under a land sea and economic blockade and are being pummelled into dirt to keep them broke , broken and quiet

No way israel want them in a position of strength over them Keep the gazans subjugated and neutralise the threat, hope the gazans say enough is enough so they can try n get rid of hamas for them and a more ameanable puppet can be installed who the israelis can control

Without the billions in aid the US provides to Israel, it could not survive in its current form. The sale of weapons is only one aspect of a larger support system that includes military, intelligence, political, strategic and religious (particularly from the Evangelical wing of the Republican Party).

The UK and EU also sell weapons to Israel - and, let us be frank here - the armaments industries not only earn massive profits for mega-corporations and countries alike, but they also purchase huge influence.

The 'military industrial complex' fuels much of the conflicts in the ME and around the world, which is why they are never-ending. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is useful, because it perpetuates divisions amongst Jews, Christians and Muslims and thus, provides justification and rationalization for permanent Western military presence in the ME.

Where are they getting the rockets from?

Arab nations can buy the arms for Palestinians. But they do not due to their rivalry with Iran.

Blame must go to Muslim Ummah themselves. They were never united in their efforts and keep blaming everyone else for their epic failures. Not one Arab nation has advanced themselves in science and innovation. Due to dumb luck they became rich and keep buying weapons from USA and Western nations.
Israel buys weapons they do not manufacture, but also makes high class military equipment which they sell to other nations. A tiny nation of 8 million which is hard to locate in world map is sending shivers down the spine of 1.8 billion Muslims. Except for bad mouthing and sending Lanats to Israel, Muslim nations cannot do anything. In fact most of them do trade with Israel now.

Their cheap rockets come from Iran. The Ayotollahs in their hatred against Israel have started yet another brainless war against a far superior nation in Israel. Shooting from the shoulders of innocent Palestinains.
If Iran is brave, they should fight a direct war with Israel. But they will not. They know they cannot win. So they start these stupid mini wars with Israel from Gaza and let innocent Palestinians die.

They used to die anyway even without Iran's support. I mean, equipping the weaker side for defending their home country is in no way starting a brainless war on the side of Iran. It is a morally correct act, very much justified. Look at the USA who just approved an arms deal for Israel. In fact, Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan should step in together and stop this bully behavior of Israel. Enough with this meek behavior.

Where are they getting the rockets from?

Iran But with the blockade from egypt and israel getting tighter they are making it themselves a lot more in the last few years

I saw a documentary on al jazeera where hamas excavated a sunken british navy warship from ww1 off the coast of gaza a few years back and recycled shells to help stockpile thousands of rockets, also unearthed some israeli steel water pipes and their unexploded ammunitions from previous wars

Why is it brainless? Theyre doing what most western countries Using proxies to counter aggression and expanding their influence in the region

Like my fellow poster said palestinians are dying anyway and have been for years with or without iran This is a mutually benefit arrangement The palestinians more and more are finding hamas agreeable who at least are fighting back against the zionist aggression, fatah not only has been inept in achieving anything just for them but is also seen as corrupt and useless

Biden tells Netanuahu he expected significant deescalation in Gaza today.

Joe Biden has told Benjamin Netanyahu that he expects “a significant de-escalation today on the path to a ceasefire” between Israel and militants in Gaza.

The White House said that in a phone call on Wednesday, “the two leaders had a detailed discussion on the state of events in Gaza, Israel’s progress in degrading the capabilities of Hamas and other terrorist elements, and ongoing diplomatic efforts by regional governments and the United States.”

It added: “The president conveyed to the prime minister that he expected a significant de-escalation today on the path to a ceasefire.”

Both sides in the conflict earlier denied that a truce was imminent. Israeli media speculated that a ceasefire could be in force from early on Thursday, but Izzat al-Rishak, a senior Hamas figure, said there was no agreement.

Israeli officials also rejected the suggested timing, and Netanyahu told foreign diplomats there was no timeframe for a truce.

“We’re not standing with a stopwatch,” he said during a briefing in Tel Aviv. “What we are trying to do is … degrade their capabilities, their terror capabilities, and degrade their will.”

Israel’s army radio reported that the security cabinet was expected to meet in the next 24 hours to discuss a possible end to the nine-day-old conflict, in which more than 200 Palestinians and 12 people in Israel have been killed.

The number of missiles fired by both sides fell for a period on Wednesday morning, raising hopes of an imminent end to the conflict. No rockets were fired from Gaza for a period of several hours. But three mortar shells were later fired at the Kerem Shalom border crossing as a consignment of humanitarian aid and medical equipment sent by Jordan was in transit. Israeli officials halted the shipment until further notice.

Israeli officials said it was the second time in 24 hours that Hamas had fired at shipments of humanitarian and medical aid entering Gaza.

Israeli jets continued to pound what officials say is an extensive tunnel network under central Gaza used by Hamas to move fighters and weapons. Al-Rimal neighbourhood was also targeted and residents reported that several homes had been destroyed. Israel claimed it had twice tried to kill the Hamas military commander, Mohammed Deif, but the elusive leader – who has previously evaded many other assassination attempts – escaped.

The intensive pre-dawn strikes marked the third round of attempts to destroy tunnels, which Israeli military commanders say have been central to the Hamas campaign, in which close to 3,500 rockets have been fired into Israel since the fighting began.

The Israeli military shelled an area across the country’s northern border with Lebanon from where four rockets were fired. The Israel Defence Forces said artillery was striking “a number of targets in Lebanese territory”.

On the diplomatic front, Egypt, Qatar and the UN are attempting to mediate between the two sides, and France has called for a UN security council resolution on the violence.

In a joint statement, France, Egypt and Jordan said they “called on the parties to immediately agree on a ceasefire”. They said they would work with the UN and other partners to ensure humanitarian help for the population of Gaza.

A French government spokesperson said “very intense discussions” were under way with the US about a resolution.

Washington has repeatedly blocked efforts before the UN security council to draft joint statements calling for the fighting to end, saying it would not help diplomatic efforts to curtail the conflict. However, Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security adviser, has said Washington is engaged in “quiet, intensive diplomacy”.

The UK government is “fully committed” to trying to bring about a ceasefire and reduce tensions in the region, the Foreign Office minister James Cleverly told parliament. He condemned “acts of terrorism by Hamas and other terrorist groups”, saying there was “no justification for targeting civilians”. Israel had a “legitimate right to self-defence” but “it is vital that all actions are proportionate”, he said.

In a televised address, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, accused Israel of carrying out “organised state terrorism and war crimes” in Gaza. Palestinians “will not hesitate to pursue those who commit such crimes in front of international courts,” he said.

Israel said an explosion that killed eight members of a Palestinian family on the first day of fighting last week had been caused by a misfired rocket from Gaza, not an Israeli airstrike.

A senior military officer, speaking anonymously on Wednesday, said an investigation had concluded that Israel did not strike the Beit Hanoun area where the family members were killed that night. The officer added that one in five rockets launched by militants landed inside Gaza.

On Tuesday an Israeli airstrike knocked out the only laboratory in Gaza that processes Covid tests.

Progressive US legislators object to $735m US arms sale to Israel

A small group of US progressive legislators led by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are objecting to a $735m US munitions sale to Israel approved by the Biden administration.

“For decades, the US has sold billions of dollars in weaponry to Israel without ever requiring them to respect basic Palestinian rights,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement on Wednesday.

“In so doing, we have directly contributed to the death, displacement and disenfranchisement of millions,” she said.

Ocasio-Cortez and Representatives Mark Pocan and Rashida Tlaib, with six other Democrats, introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives that would disallow the sale of precision-guided weapons to Israel.

The Biden administration had notified Congress on May 5 of the planned sale of Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) and Small Diameter Bombs, the same kinds of weapons now being used by Israel in Gaza.
