South Africa seem to be in self destruction mode this series.

Duminy, Steyn and now Philander

What a weird way to injure oneself. Judging by the circumstances the Dean Elgar should have been injured. Regardless, Philander wouldn't have made much of a difference on these turning tracks.

It was raining in Bangalore from early monday morning to yesterday evening. The rain has relented for now, but it is still cloudy and would remain so tomorrow as well.

The chances of a Mohali like dry pitch are slim to nil given the weather. Under these circumstances, the absence of Steyn + Philander can be crucial to the outcome of this series. But knowing the strength of our batting, Morkel and Rabada could well be enough :) - For us Pujara and Vijay are going to be the backbone yet again in different seaming conditions this time..

They will slam us 3-1.

In what universe?? They lost both their premier fast bowlers. Besides Amla and ABD their batting lineup is fragile. THe main bowler right now is just Tahir.
It would actually be an upset if India don't whitewash them

This is just sad. Hope it's not that bad.
Would love to see philander and steyn Bowling in tandem in fourth test.

I don't think that Philander is Test class in Asian conditions anyway.

South Africa should only have two quicks in this series - Rabada for his pace and Morkel for his bounce.

If we're being honest, Philander is only selected in Asia to meet a racial quota. Kyle Abbott has much more chance of doing well.

Read some Australian saying that Philander gets injured in unfavourable conditions. Unlucky for him.

Steyn and Philander gonna miss out in swing in Bangalore. Its been cold and raining for two days straight but its not raining anymore. That couple d with the bounce you get here would be made SA seamers lethal.

This is really stupid, really is. When will these idiots stop playing football in warm ups?
JP snapped his Achilles and missed the rest of the Aussie tour, QdK did his ankle as well, and nearly missed the WC. Couldn't contribute much either as he was coming back from injury.
And now this, really stupid. CSA should ban all football related exercise in training.

Blessing in disguise probably for SA. I don't see how they are playing Philander over Abbot.

Update: Philander ruled out of the series with ligament injury, Kyle Abbot comes in.

Vernon Philander suffered a freak injury two days prior to the second India-South Africa Test to be held in Bengaluru on Saturday (November 14) and has been ruled out of the Test series. The pacer suffered the injury during South Africa's practice session in the Chinnaswamy ground, and was seen being carried off the field by the medical staff. Kyle Abbott has been called up to replace Philander, and will join up with the squad on Friday morning. Abbott last played a Test match for South Africa against the West Indies in December 2014.

AB de Villiers later revealed at the press conference that Philander accidentally stepped on Dean Elgar's foot while practising, and subsequently injured his leg. De Villiers also added that Philander has been sent to the hospital to get scans done on the injured foot and his availability in the second Test will be based on those results. The results revealed that Philander had suffered multiple ligament injuries to his left leg, and will need six weeks of rest.
According to Dr Thomas Chandy Sports Medicine Specialist, HOSMAT: "Philander has sustained multiple ligament injuries of the left ankle. His left ankle is under full cast below the knee. He needs six weeks of rest and he can't play".

Dr Mohammed Moosajee, the South Africa team manager, explained: "Vernon rolled his left ankle during practice at the stadium in Bengaluru this morning. He was taken to the hospital for an MRI scan which confirmed an ankle ligament tear, which will rule him out of the current series against India. He will return back to Cape Town this weekend to be assessed by one of Cricket South Africa's specialists. At this moment, it is still too early to tell but he will be out for a period of at least six to eight weeks.

"The first Test match against England is six weeks away so it will be a tight schedule to get him ready and rehabilitated to make that Test match. Once he has been assessed back home in Cape Town and a proper programme for physio and rehabilitation has been put into place, we will have a clearer understanding."

The injury further compounds South Africa's problems in the fast bowling department. Dale Steyn did not bowl for the whole of India's second innings in Mohali due to an injury that occurred while fielding. His partner, Morne Morkel, too, has not been in the best physical state, having missed the side's last two ODIs and the first Test.

De Villiers also commented on Steyn's condition saying the fast bowler will undergo fitness tests leading up to the game on Saturday, and then a call will be taken on whether to play him. The South African team management also added that JP Duminy and Morne Morkel have both recovered from their respective injuries and are available for selection for the second Test. Dale Steyn, the statement added, continues to make steady progress from a groin injury and will undergo a final fitness test on Friday before a decision on his availability for the match is made.

South Africa trail India 0-1 having lost the first Test in Mohali.

Steyn is fit, so won't miss him much. Steyn+Rabada > Philander+Steyn in these conditions.

Also, Duminy is fit now.

Gets injured whenever he spots a tough track. It happened in 2012. He saw the adelaide Road and immediately pulled a hammy

Rain in Bangalore and cloudy as some say.

This will be interesting.

Looks like conditions will favour SA a lot more this time around.

Steyn + Rabada + Morkel will be lethal in under such conditions.

Indian batsmen better bring their A game cos we may be watching one hell of a match.

Rahane should do better here. Green track bully:)

Not a green track but it looks it will swing because its November and its gonna be cloudy and of course there is always going to be extra bit of pace and bounce compared to other Indian pitches but that s about it.

Latest - Philander ruled out of whole Test series

He went to assess the pitch and then he he mysteriously fell and injured himself.

With both Steyn and Philander out, Indians chances of a series win go up much further where as SA chances get slimmer by every day.

Don't think Jaddu will be as effective as he was in the previous match on this pitch.
All depends on Ashwin tbh

India are getting very lucky this series. While top teams like Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand had to face a full strength test team with Steyn and co, they are facing a second string SAF team because of all these injuries.

Will be surprised if they can't win at home here...

Only Philander is injured. Steyn, Morkel, Rabada, Tahir, Abbott is a great attack.

Duminy is available now as well. So only Philander missing does not make them second string.

It's pretty cold and damp here in Bangalore currently.

Expect frequent rain interruptions during the test.

And this weather is not going to allow us the luxury of a turning pitch.

The ball is going to swing around. We are in for a very tough time.

Media Advisory: Vernon Philander fitness update

Wednesday, 19 April 2017

Sussex regret to announce that overseas player Vernon Philander will be out of action for a period of two to three weeks, as a result of the groin injury sustained during the Specsavers County Championship match with Kent at Hove this weekend, which prevented him from bowling partly in the 1st innings, and Completely in the Second.

Philander is due to return to South Africa this week for rest, recovery and rehabilitation.

We are pleased that he will return to Hove – subject to him passing a fitness test - to be available for the remaining four Specsavers County Championship matches of his agreed contract with the club, beginning with the match against Durham on Sunday 21st May, finishing in the middle of June. He will now however be unavailable for Sussex's Royal London One-Day Cup campaign.

On the back of Sussex confirming that overseas star Vernon Philander has returned to South Africa for rehabilitation on the groin injury he sustained in the Specsavers County Championship match with Kent, we are pleased to report that the all-rounder is progressing well and is on course for his return to Hove for the remainder of his agreed contract.

Philander returned to Cape Town last week for rest, recovery and rehabilitation in consultation with Cricket South Africa following the injury he picked up at The 1st Central County Ground. He is due to return to Sussex in time for the next Specsavers County Championship match against Durham which begins on Sunday 21st May.

Sussex are working hard to obtain a replacement for the Royal London One-Day Cup group stages, and are currently in the latter stages of negotiations.

Sussex’s Director of Cricket Keith Greenfield said, “We are pleased with the news that Vernon is on course to re-join us for the re-commencement of the Championship.

“Despite the disappointing start in the four-day campaign, we are actively working to bolster the ranks with a replacement for him in the Royal London One-Day Cup, and we hope to be able to confirm shortly.”
