Ottis would probably cry if another Proteas quick gets struck down

The national cricket coach ‘doesn’t want to think about that’ as the side goes into the Test series against Pakistan with only three fit fast bowlers.

Another injury in the Proteas’ group of fast bowlers for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan is a simply “unthinkable” thought for Ottis Gibson.

As a result, the national cricket coach is keeping his fingers crossed that Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn and Duanne Olivier all emerge from the final weekend of the Mzansi Super League unscathed.

Gibson is already without Lungi Ngidi, who’ll be missing the entire series against Pakistan with a knee injury, while Vernon Philander’s broken thumb means he won’t be fit for the first Test starting in Centurion on December 26.

“I really don’t even want to think about what would happen should there be another injury,” the West Indian mentor said on Friday.

“We’ve seen how Dale’s been going. I don’t want to say we’ve seen a transformation because he’s always been a top player, but he’s back to full fitness and performing like the player of old. KG as always is very important to us.

“We’ve looked at a few bowling options over the past 14 months and we’ve got what we feel now is a very good bowling attack and group. You’ve got Steyn, Rabada, Philander, Ngidi and Olivier, who’s been in-and-out, but always in our thinking. That’s the making of a good attack in any form of the game. My job now is to keep them fit and fresh for them to be at their peak at international level.”

To that end, South Africa’s Test bowlers won’t be playing in next week’s round of domestic four-day competition fixtures.

“If you look at where we are, Steyn, Rabada and Olivier become very important to us,” said Gibson.

“We just want to manage them as best we can. They won’t be playing.”

In contrast, all the batsmen will be expected to be included, particularly given the fact that they don’t have much time to adapt back to red-ball cricket from the helter skelter of the T20 format.

“I’ve found that it has been a challenge in the past. In T20 cricket you have to play shots at every ball. In Test cricket, one of your best shots in the first hour is the leave,” said the Proteas coach.

“I’d like the guys to get some of that. We’re trying to balance time in the middle with some rest. That’s still a conversation that needs to be had.”

So less excuses for Pak batting failures!

No Philander, no Ngidi, Steyn on his last legs, AB and Morkel retired.

Pakistan have a better pace attack now.

Best chance to beat SA in SA.

You know what? This news actually fills me with fear. Because the last time a frontline SA bowler had to miss a Test against Pak (could've been Philander, not sure) an unkown named Kyle Abbot stepped in and absolutely destroyed Pakistan....Hasn't done much since. That is the way of Pakistan Cricket.

But still...this is good news, right?:))

Luck on Pakistan's side just like in India's case. Hope both SC teams create history in the 2 southern hemisphere countries where success has eluded us.

There goes South Africa's best bowler, need to win the first Test at any cost now.

Pakistan will face a weaker SA team now. If Pakistan win we shall say that Pakistan won against depleted SA team but if they loose we shall say look Pakistan when cent beat weak SA team :ma

Yep was thinking the same thing. Wonder which unknown bowler we will make to look like the second coming of Malcolm Marshall this time around.

If we don't win this series, it will be an embarrassment.

Well... gotta win the first test now. Watch Steyn pull a Yasir and take a 14fer :hafeez

Agree.

No AB, No Morkel, V ern missing first test....

Pakistan is going to be all over SA due to fielding such a weak team.

Without AB, Morkel, Philander, Ngidi...is it safe to say that this SA is weaker than the Aust team India facing at the moment?

there is a difference. south africa are selecting their best available XI.
australiaare deliberately fielding an understrength XI,
i have seen Aus batting on flat UAE pitches, and it was worse than west indies, even west indies batting in 2016-17 gave a better account of themselves then the OZ batting minus Smith and Warner.

Aus is also picking all available players for selection. Banned players are not available for selection.

Explain me this part bro. Even Aust cant select Warner/Smith...so they are selecting best available XI.

Steyn and Rabada are enough for this mediocre line up. This is the same line up which surrendered to Grandhomme 2 years ago. We should be afraid of a newbie more. Always tend to make them legends in their debuts.

There is no debutant in their squad.

Agree that this SA team is weak but we have to look at the opposition as well. Indian team is head shoulders above the current Australian squad hence they should not only dominate but wipe them out in the series.

Where as the Pakistani team is at best a top 6 or 7 unit and with injuries to the SA squad it only levels the playing field a few percentage points but still SA huge favorites to win the series. It doesn't matter who the bowler is, as long as its swings and bounces that too in SA conditions, Pakistan are dead meat.

We can all start the comparisons as to which squad is weaker SA or AUS but in the end the difference in quality between India and Pakistan makes it irrelevant.

Do explain this part.

australia can select smith and warner, the ban placed on them is not by the ICC or any other body.
they choose not to. because of reasons.
my congratulations to india, for they have won the lottery, they get to tour australia at precisely that home season, that smith and warner will miss due to the ban.

Nail, head, hit.

if we do win a game by some miracle.

( and that is a big big IFFFF)

i would like to thank the mzansi super league for

1) ensuring that philander and ngidi are out of the first game

2) ensuring that south african batsmen are playing nothing but t20 cricket and stay in that t20 mindset during the test series.

So Saffers will have a new bowling hero

The Pakistani side is worse so it doesnt really matter unfortunately.

In case of the Indian side in Aus, this Indian side is actually #1 as per rankings

Steyn next on the hit list. Nah I'm just joking, Steyn is a legend, and I want to see him play even if that means a Pakistan loss.

We are losing anyway so might as well lose to a team with a legend in their ranks

So less excuses for Pak batting failures!

Rabada is currently a better and more fearsome bowler than Philander, so he should be the major worry and as long as he plays, with Steyn to supplement him (Oliver is no slouch), the Pak batting is still in serious trouble.

Same posters who downplay India's victory going to have a hard time defending us if we get hammered. No Philander,Morkel,or AB and still no one expects anything from us

It's going to be an Interesting series now...lot depends on Babar and Azhar though and Abbass should be handful to the Saffers.

Ind about to win test series in Aus
Pak about to win test series in SA

Previously these teams didn’t even have a sniff of winning.

World cricket has really gone down the pan!!

Let both teams win series and then we can discuss. So far, one test win.

If Steyn also gets injured, Hafeez may seriously consider a comeback in tests.

Pakistan winning this series will be a huge upset. One of the biggest in cricket history.

India is the better team in Australia, so no surprises there.

Apart from Elgar & QDK SA batting is worse than Australias, Amir Abbas Yasir will have them on toast, just need pak batsman to put 220/240 on board.

Philanders lower order batting will also be missed.

Good news for Pakistan relatively at least. But they still have Rabada Steyn and Ngidi though.

Their batting is weaker in the absence of ABDV. So Pakistan might have a chance to win a test... it is possible.

Lol 50 year old lance klusner and shaun pollock could come back and play for SAF and we would still lose. If we don't get crushed I will be happy with this tour. Winning is not anywhere in my expectations

South Africa will still be far more tougher.

Steyn and Rabada, best Test bowlers in the world and that too in South Africa is a for more potent attack than the Aus one on their mostly flat decks.

The challenge is substantially more. Conditions different.

And in reality, it's kind of a dream to think that Pak or IND can win a series against Steyn, Rabada, Maharaj in SA.

SA Aus are at there weakest in living memory. If Ind Pak can’t beat them this time round they might aswell give up cricket, and stick to kabbadi/hockey. No point in thrashing teams at home!!

I’ve been saying this for months.

The South African batting is as bad as Pakistan’s, and the bowling is geriatric apart from Rabada.

If Pakistan has bothered to arrive a month ago they would have been odds-on to win.

Rabada and Steyn will be enough to rip through our batting line-up. Followed by Keshav Maharaj

Pakistan plays Phillander well anyway, his miss won’t make a difference. I have a feeling Pakistan will whitewash Proteas.

Ngidi is already out of the series with a injury.

Philander seems to be permanently injured.

Luck on Pakistan's side just like in India's case. Hope both SC teams create history in the 2 southern hemisphere countries where success has eluded us.

Nah, we will get destroyed. Our batting is a compete joke and non entity now. I will be extremely surprised if we don't lose every single match.

I have a feeling that K Mahraj will be the man of the series. Rabada, Stayn and De Kock are the other contenders.

no ngidi, no Philander, no AB and over the hill Amla & Steyn. This is weaker than the Australia team with out smith and warner. Pakistan's best chance to win in SA

Looks like he is back for the 2nd Test...

I think this was key.

Philander's injury got Olivier in the side. Hadn't Philander been injured we would not have seen Olivier at all and Maharaj would have played the last two as well. People were happy that Philander was ruled out but never could anyone have imagined that a guy called Duanne Olivier would destroy Pak. Pak could handle Rabada, Steyn but Olivier cut through our batting line up.

What about the centurion game? It was all Olivier there.

Destiny is all, eh?
