Viacom 18 has bagged the media rights of BCCI's home international games. The newcomer, which broadcasts live action in the Jio Cinema and Sports 18 television channel, has won both digital as well as television rights, having agreed to shell out a price of INR 67.8 crore per game.

The final number is approximately Rs 7.8 crore higher than the price of the last cycle's value and fulfills the BCCI's condition that the overall value exceeds Rs 60 crore. Altogether, Viacom 18, supported by Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries and led by Uday Shankar, who revolutionized the broadcast industry in India during his time as the head of Star India, will contribute Rs 5966.4 crore over five years.

Viacom 18 will broadcast 88 games over the course of five years in an agreement that concludes in March 2028 and commences with a three-match ODI series against Australia at the end of September.

With this, Viacom 18 has bagged the third property from the BCCI. It had previously bagged the digital rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and linear and digital properties of Women's Premier League (WPL).

Confirming the development, BCCI secretary said on X (previously Twitter), "Viacom 18 will broadcast 88 games over the course of five years in an agreement that concludes in March 2028 and commences with a three-match ODI series against Australia at the end of September.

"Congratulations @viacom18 for winning the @BCC Media Rights for both linear and digital for the next 5 years. India Cricket will continue to grow in both spaces as after @IPL, and @wplt20, we extend the partnership @bcci Media Rights as well. Together we will continue to capture the imagination of cricket fans."

He also thanked Star India, the outgoing broadcaster. "Also a big thank you to @starindia @DisneyPlusHS for your support over the years. You played a key role in making India Cricket reach its fans across the globe (sic)."

The ultimate figure of Rs 67.8 represents a mere 12 per cent premium compared to the prevailing price. Another perspective reveals that this figure falls below last year's media rights valuation of Rs 78 crore, the price of last year's matches. Another way to look at this is considering that the combined base price for the two packages stood at Rs 45 crore, the final value exhibits a substantial 50 percent increase over the reserved benchmark. As highlighted in the media rights preview, out of the total 88 games, 25 constitute Test matches, while 27 are ODIs and 36 are T20Is.

These are crazy numbers - so close to USD 8.2m per game???

The per match payment is only 8.2mn, IPL is 15mn.
An indication that Indian cricket fans are more interested in IPL than international matches?

Clearly, the people involved seem to think that they will get more eyeballs for IPL, which went for a whole lot more $$$.

Poor itinerary by BCCI.

Poor timing of auctions.

Overall BCCI effed up, else this was atleast a 10-12mn per match sale

Itinery wise Other than pak, every one was playing. It was much better than last cycle.
In cricbuzz, they made a point that a lot of second string players are playing for limited over matches. As a result Disney is worried about ROI.

I agree with things. Bcci is always messed up but it's time for a ceo/ rational approach .

do you think if this continues than BCCI would have to start arranging series with Pakistan to make up for the potential profits?

BCCI will rake 8 to 9bn usd in revenues in next 5 years. Out of which at least 20 per cent will end up as surplus after revenue sharing, expenditures and distribution to state association.

Thats a nearly 2bn usd in surplus.

In the preceding 5 years they had a surplus of 1.5bn usd.

BCCI reserves in 2017 was around 500mn usd.

Now its close to $2bn in reserves

$8.2mn per match is a huge figure, but BCCI had potential for more. Some boards get that for an entire year.

So BCCI is going to make huge profits and wont be hosting any pakistan tours.

Nobody wants to watch bi lateral T20s and ODIs as they have no value or meaning. In the next cycle the big companies will realise that have made millions more than they are worth. It will true in other countries.
