Women's Premier League (WPL)

so mentioning about discrimination is whining?

What discrimination? Pakistan and its citizens support secession of Kashmir from India. The two countries have fought 4 wars. Why will India allow citizens of a hostile nation to hold jobs in India?

A blanket ban on people based on their nationality is pretty close to being as blatant racial discrimination as you can get.

U19 Ind W also won the World Cup defeating England . This would be a great momentum for WIPL now . I am sure WIPL would be a great hit across

The first Women's Premier League (WPL) player auction is likely to take place on February 11 or 13 either in New Delhi or Mumbai with the BCCI making a final decision this week. The BCCI had initially planned to host the auction on February 6 in Mumbai, giving the five newly established franchises just under a month to prepare for the inaugural WPL season, which is anticipated to run from March 4 to 24 as per ESPNcricinfo.

However, the BCCI was compelled to alter that plan for two reasons.

First, the bulk of the five WPL franchise owners also own clubs in the ILT20 in the United Arab Emirates and the SA20 in South Africa, both of which will hold finals on February 11 and 12, respectively.

The five franchises were acquired by the owners of the three IPL teams--Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals--along with Adani Group and Capri Global for a total of INR 4669.99 crore (about USD 572.78 million). This represents the largest deal ever made in women's cricket.

While the sports division of the Adani Group, Adani Sportsline, won the Ahmedabad franchise, Capri Global, a non-banking financial firm, chose Lucknow as its centre of operations.

Will many people watch this? I highly doubt.

I expect games to be played in front of many empty seats.

Women's Premier League seems like a terrible idea in terms of finance.

Women's Premier League seems like a terrible idea in terms of finance.

remember man people saying that nobody will watch IPL from the 2nd season after the novelty wears out with the first.
WPL is a long term investment, it won't be financially profitable initially. after 10 years it might be profitable and there will be more players with higher standards than today. there will be massive influx of young talent and aspiring cricketers with potential in these 10 years.

Will be embarrassing for the PSL if the Women's IPL overshadows it.

Will be embarrassing for the PSL if the Women's IPL overshadows it.

Relax noway in the first 5 years, but the constant downplaying on this forum will happen like it did for IPL.

There were some early jitters, a bit of initial hesitation in picking rookie talents and even a few hasty decisions. But in the end, the five franchises went for the tried and tested formula as they picked the teams for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

As the auction got underway at the Jio World Convention Centre on Monday afternoon, Smriti Mandhana - the first player to go under the hammer - attracted an intense bidding war between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, with the latter eventually roping her in for a whopping Rs 3.4 crore. That not only made Mandhana the most expensive pick at the auction, but also gave Royal Challengers Bangalore an option to look at the India international as its potential captain.

And Mandhana’s pick set the tone for the auction as over the next seven hours, Ashleigh Ashleigh Gardner became the biggest overseas buy at Rs 3.2 crore, while Deepti Sharma and Jemimah Rodrigues were the other two expensive Indian buys. While UP Warriorz went all out to get ‘home girl’ Deepti for Rs 2.6 crore, Delhi Capitals roped in Jemimah for Rs 2.2 crore, besides bagging Australia’s legendary captain Meg Lanning for a relatively lower price - at Rs 1.1 crore. Delhi also bolstered its batting department by picking up India’s U-19 World Cup-winning captain Shafali Verma at Rs 2 crore.

While UP Warriorz MD Rajesh Sharma said that they will decide on a prospective captain at a later stage, Delhi Capitals’ owner Parth Jindal told Sportstar that with Lanning, Shafali and Jemimah around, it has enough options in the leadership role.

However, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur was roped in by Mumbai Indians at a relatively lesser price of Rs 1.8 crore, while some of the young India internationals got a better deal. Pooja Vastrakar went to Mumbai Indians for Rs 1.9 crore, while Renuka Singh Thakur and Yastika Bhatia earned Rs 1.5 crore respectively.

Of highs and lows

While UP Warriorz made a few smart buys by roping in Sophie Ecclestone, Tahlia McGrath, Shabnam Ismail early on, Gujarat Giants - the franchise owned by the Adani Group - started slowly and initially eyed only overseas players, before upping their ante and get the house in order. “Some have gone for higher bids, some lower than expected. That’s what auction is about. You are pretty much betting and guessing,” Mithali Raj, the mentor of the Gujarat outfit, said.

While top three biggest overseas buys - Ashleigh Gardner, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Beth Mooney - had a field day, surprisingly, Suzie Bates, Tazmin Brits, Laura Wolvaardt, Tammy Beaumont, Sune Luus and Danni Wyatt were some of the big names, who went unsold. Only one player from the associate nation - Tara Norris of USA - was picked up.

U-19 players have a field day

After initially being apprehensive about the India U-19 players, franchises ended up picking nine of them - including Richa and Shafali - in their roster. Delhi Capitals got Titas Sadhu on board for Rs 25 lakh, while Shweta Sehrawat went to the UP franchise for 40 lakh. But as the evening progressed and the purse dried up, the franchises - especially Mumbai Indians - made some last-minute U-19 picks. “This time, there was not much time. But hopefully, next time onwards, there will be more time and the teams will be able to scout more local, rookie talents and that will be a big thing for the youngsters,” former India captain and Mumbai Indians’ mentor Jhulan Goswami said.

‘Extremely rushed’

The franchises accepted the fact that they had to get everything in a real short time. “It’s extremely rushed. Everything happened very fast. Teams will assemble quickly and the matches are also nearly upon us in two weeks time. It’s new for me personally,” Jindal said.

“I am a follower of women’s cricket, but apart from Indian players and a couple of legendary players from other teams, I did not know many names. It’s as competitive, as tricky and some skill sets are different from the men’s league. You see more all-rounders here. I felt like a standard X student trying to learn the entire year’s syllabus in the last nine days. It’s the same for everyone…”

Talent pool and retention policy

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah also admitted that at one stage, it was difficult to imagine that there would be such a strong talent pool. But in the end, they were happy with the response.

“A few weeks ago, we became U-19 champions, we were also confused about how we will get into a 100-player pool. But, one of the most important aspects of the auction was that we got appropriate players and teams were also satisfied. That’s the biggest thing. Earlier, people were asking how you’d get a pool of players, so this auction is the answer to your question,” Shah said.

The BCCI also plans to finalise the retention policy for the WPL in due course as the teams will have the option of signing the current set of players for three years. “The women’s FTP is not finalised yet. We are having 22 matches for now. The moment ICC finalises the FTP, we will decide on the future course of action. The current squads will be for the first three years, then it will be decided,” Shah said.

The inaugural edition of the tournament will be held in Mumbai between March 4 and 26.

IPL increased the women's fan base consistently. India's women population is twice that of US total population. It may not be as crazy as it is for Men's IPL. But it will more substantial

City based loyalty is a big thing. RCB, DC & MI will enjoy great fan base for Women's team as well. Gujarat are the champions in IPL and they have their own following as well. It will take sometime and will not take off like the Men's IPL did but eventually will be a game changer for Women's cricket. It already is though.

After bagging a whopping amount paid by the RCB in Monday's auction, Mandhana is set to earn double than Pakistan Super League (PSL) highest-paid players, says a report.

The top players in the PSL get picked through a draft, which means there is a cap on how much they can earn. The Platinum category is the top tier where players receive a salary within the range of $130,000 (1.1 crore) to $170,000 (1.4 crore).

Babar, who played for Peshawar Zalmi side, under the Platinum category, was traded at the season salary of $1,50,000 or PKR 3,60,00000 (3 Crore 60 lakh).

As per current USD to Indian rupees conversion rate, Babar's PSL 2023 salary amounts to approximately INR 1.23 crore.

Mandhana was also the first player to come up for bidding at the auction on Monday, having a base price of INR 50 lakh. RCB and Mumbai Indians were locked in an intense battle for her services, before the former managed to acquire her services, offering an opening as well as a captaincy option.

Pretty pumped for WPL!

Our team(MI) is rather imbalanced but hope springs eternal.

Tennis legend Sania Mirza doesn't know much about cricket but as an elite athlete for the last two decades, she feels she can help Royal Challengers Bangalore women cricketers to deal with the mental aspect of things in the inaugural Women's Premier League. Sania has been roped in as the mentor by RCB for the WPL starting in Mumbai on Saturday with the opener between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians. RCB, led by India opener Smriti Mandhana, will open their campaign against Delhi Capitals on Sunday.

WIPL inauguration was better than the Mens thanks to AP dhillon

After a long time I’m sitting in to watch a complete game but man has the quality improved since 2010 when only Aus was real quality.
But unable to hit those big sixes for obvious reasons.

Big money 💰

Bcci is so rich 🤑

Indian fans love Cricket so much

Supporting Smriti Mandhana rcb 🥳 for this season

Behold!, Thor herself has descended on this realm and she is doing a BMac.

If India had launched a T20 League for their U19 players, they would have done it for a significant profit.

As per the rules of WPL only 4 fielders are allowed outside the inner ring throughout the 20 overs. Even if Gijarat dont manage to chase this mountain of a score, wont be surprised if they reach close to it.

Lot of aggression in Mumbai team lol.. they seem ready to take this WIPL

Lol might end up as the highest and lowest total for the entire tournament :)) worst is even with dew MI have bowled well

There are only 20 matches in a season ... that's a stupendous salary amount for women.

What a comeback by Delhi! Kept the match alive.

Still, 132 should be a walkover.

It's not a walkover. :((

We need a big over

Captain Thor! Please deliver us from this peril.

Smriti Mandhana is in her own league, playing beautifully, elegantly, and hitting sixes effortlessly.
RCB men's team should play with her, I am sure she will perform better than many RCB batters.:djb

Ellyse Perry has become the first player to take a six-wicket haul in a Women's Premier League match.

Australia all-rounder Perry, 33, took figures of 6-15 from four overs for Royal Challengers Bangalore in a seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians.

Perry's six wickets saw Mumbai bowled out for 113 in Delhi, which Bangalore chased down with five overs to spare.

Eliminator: MI vs RCB
Superb match. RCB defended 136 runs and secured their place in the finals.
The finals will be between DC and RCB this Sunday.

WPL has been a bigger hit than PSL.
It's surprisingly popular. All our whatsapp groups are filled with score updates and videos. Didn't expect it to be this popular. I follow as my wife loves it and saw almost all the matches. Quality is reasonable, matches are competitive and crowd seems to be enjoying it. BCCI have another wining formula. They need to add three more teams after couple of years and it will be a great product in feb/march as a precursor to men's ipl

RCB vs DC Final:
DC collapsed from 64-0 in 6 overs to 113 all out, losing all 10 wickets for just 49 runs.

Team in blue choking in the final.
WPL > any others league except IPL

RCB winning has been best thing for the league. Remarkable celebrations

Quality has been way better than last year, some of the fielding efforts will put men to shame.

yeah, they put together a fielding packing in one of the matches and i was like damn.. It puts to shame some of the fielding i saw in PSL.. Ladies are clearly out there trying to prove a point and they did extremely well
