Virat Kohli, who was part of the India squad which won the ICC Champions Trophy four years ago, believes his side is in an even better position to rule the world this year as he prepares for his first major competition as captain.

India arrives in England and Wales as one of the favourites to lift the trophy and repeat its success from 2013 – when it beat host England in a memorable final.

However, India has not played 50-over cricket since beating England 2-1 in a thrilling three-match series in January and there is no time to ease into the competition in a group which contains the dangerous trio of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

But recent history shows the team always rises to the occasion on the biggest stage, and the two-time ICC Cricket World Cup winner will be tough to stop.

The squad arrives having played plenty of cricket in the past six months, with home series against England and Australia followed by the Indian Premier League. And the squad is full of match-winners, with Kohli joined by the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and the veteran duo of Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The 28-year-old Kohli is expecting great things from his side.

“I am very excited to be playing as captain in my first major ICC competition,” he said. “As far as the team goes, we won last time because our fast bowlers did very well, our spinners were strong and our opening batsman did well.

“They were the main three factors. This year the team is a lot fitter, the cricketers are a lot more mature because that was a very young group four years ago. It has gained a lot of experience in the last three or four years. I love the tournament because it represents a challenge from the (word) go.

“In the ICC Cricket Wold Cup you have a league and a lot of games to play but here it is group games and then either the semis or you are out.”

After a couple of warm-up matches against New Zealand and Bangladesh, India opens its campaign against neighbour Pakistan at Edgbaston in one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the group stage.

Following that, India will tackle Sri Lanka and South Africa at the Kia Oval.

Kohli’s 50-over form in the past 12 months is nothing short of exemplary, with an average of over 90 – while he already has the fourth most one-day international centuries in history. But he struggled to find his best form in England three years ago, averaging less than 20 across five Test matches.

“If you talk about the longer format of the game then I did not do well here three years ago,” he said.

“I was not able to contribute to the team and I want to succeed, although not to prove a point. It motivates me further to come back and do better.

“For me it is a game of cricket. From then to now, I have shown I am strong mentally. England brings a lot for challenges for a batsmen and I want to overcome them personally for my satisfaction at the end of my career.

“From that point of view, it is exciting for me.”

Kohli may be the star of the team these days, but Yuvraj and Dhoni still play a major role. And Kohli expects former captain Dhoni to flourish in this tournament.

“We needed to strengthen our lower middle order contribution. Too much burden was on MS,” he said.

“He was not able to express himself. But now we are balanced, we have good fast bowlers, depth in batting and the series against England [In January] sealed it for us.

”We are in a good head-space going into this tournament.”

London: Virat Kohli arrived at the United Kingdom heartbroken but the Manchester blast has failed to break his unwavering focus on cricket, as the India captain geared up for a tournament that is of "paramount importance".

Defending champions India will begin their campaign in the Champions Trophy with a high-profile match against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 4 in Birmingham, which is less than 100 miles from the affected city.

"Firstly, what happened here a few days back was really saddening and very disturbing for everyone who saw it. And especially a place like England, to say the least, has not had many of these incidents happen in the past.

"So, yeah, I mean, for a few people it can be sort of a nervous time. But I don't think as a squad you have time to focus on those factors, because eventually you understand that you're here for a sporting tournament," Kohli said on arrival.

He said the players are not nervous despite the heightened security all around and relentless briefings. "...And that for us remains paramount in our thought patterns. And I personally don't feel any nervousness as such. I saw life resume pretty normally. And that's always a healthy sign."

The Indian batting mainstay seemed satisfied with the security apparatus in place. "We have security briefings throughout the day. We have a lot more information in terms of specifics that we need to keep in mind. I see life resuming very normally. And obviously with the security information coming in as well, it will be very helpful for the players, you know.

"... What are the areas we can access? What times we can access it? What are the areas we need to avoid? All the sort of things obviously come into play when you have a situation

like this which the players need to respect."

Pointing out the significance of the tournament, he said, "I'm sure there's going to be a lot of transparency about the issue, because there's a lot at stake for everyone here. The cricketers, the ICC, ECB, everyone is worried about everyone's security. So I'm sure it's going to be taken care of."

Entering the ODI tournament after a long home Test season followed by the IPL, Kohli stressed on the need to be fit physically as well as mentally.

"I think the only challenge I feel is taking care of your body. Mentally, it's up to individuals to base their game in a way that they can switch pretty quickly, because that is the need of the game in this day and age," he said.

"I personally don't like to choose formats and give preference to one over the other. I like to be involved in all three equally. Try to contribute as much as I can. And I'm sure all the guys on the team think in that manner as well.

"I think it's just a little mental adjustment. But it's the physical care of your body that's paramount, I think, to switch between formats because the body reacts very differently to different formats."

The event organizers need to do a better job of making the sponsors stand out on the background wall. Mrf
, emirates, and Nissan are all merging in to each to each other with their red background and white font

Will be fascinating to see how Kohli does as captain. Seems a different type of captain to Dhoni. Dhonis captaincy has won India many games before.

I don't think the test for Virat is his batting, I'm sure that will come. It will be what type of strategy he will employ in the field and how he handles his emotions and reactions in the field.

As long as dhoni is on the field he will captain more than kohli with kohli being poster boy captain. :))

Kohli is no dummy like Steve Smith. He is bigger than Dhoni in Indian cricket right now.

Actually its the opposite. Steve Smith is no dummy and he single handedly carried his team to the finals of IPL. You got carried away with propaganda.
Kohli looks clueless in captaincy and completely hand over the on field captaincy to dhoni.

20 over match doesn't define your captaincy skills where game moves forward very quickly. Kohli has done exceedingly well in test format and that's enough for many to make that he is quite a handy captain. Yes, his true test awaits in overseas but having seven series win in a row is no mean feat.

If he goes to dhoni for advice in ODIs doesn't make him any less of a captain. Dhoni will always be pseudo captain of the team till he is in the team and kohli should and must take his advice while he can.

Only that kohli does not go to dhoni for advise but asks dhoni to be defacto captain on the field. Have you not watched against England.
He is so far a clueless captain in ODIs currently.

6 consecutive test series wins without the so called genius Dhoni. Yes I am talking about Kohli, the clueless, who is on the greatest streak as an Indian captain. Kohli has always been too nice off the field with his interviews, commenting on players etc. Seems like you got carried away by his interview on Dhoni's captaincy and how he takes tips and advice from him.

Didn't watch much of RPS in the IPL. But from what I saw of Mumbai's innings in the final, seemed like Dhoni was calling the shots.

Msd leads the side in the 1st season, finish 2nd from bottom.

Smith takes over the following season, reach the final and lose by a run.

Smith is indeed a dummy captain LOL
