In his latest video offering, Saj tells us about:

Which players are carrying the hopes of a nation?

Who are the players to watch out for at the upcoming World Cup?

Who could be the stars of World Cup 2023.

5 potential stars:

1) Ben Stokes.
2) Jos Butler.
3) Gill.
4) Shaheen.
5) Kuldeep Yadav.

I just hope and pray Babar and Shaheen will do something useful and become the players to watch and admire in this World Cup

1. Iftikhar
2. Stokes
3. Maxwell
4. Kohli
5. Buttler

Iftimania could rock the world this time

For Pakistan it's Babar and Shaheen or bust.

Pakistan need both, not just one to have great tournaments, otherwise they will not make it to the semi-finals.

If either have average or just ok tournaments, then I don't think Pakistan has the firepower to cover for them.

My 5 picks would be Babar, Kuldeep, Shubhman, Shakib and Stokes.

1. Iftikhar
2. Stokes
3. Maxwell
4. Kohli
5. Buttler

Iftimania could rock the world this time
iftimania sounds very cringy, considering his strike rate is 92 in List A and 127 in T20s. His strike rate and average is good in ODIs, but mostly due to Nepal and second string NZ side.. His lengthy domestic record doesn't warrant such cringy names...

2 potential stars wont be included into the playing 11

Saud Shakeel
Abdullah Shafique

Remaining 3 would be Imam, Babar and Rizwan.

1. Klaasen
2. KL Rahul (he’s looking switched on)
3. Wallalage
4. Mitch Marsh
5. Glen Phillips

If we strictly go by domestic bullies then 90% of the squad will need to be replaced.

Ben Stokes almost made my 5.

I really do think he will have a fantastic tournament.

Top ranked performers from each team rated ahead of World Cup

We take a look at the best performers in each category of the MRF Tyres ODI Player Rankings that will be in action at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Afghanistan
Top ranked batter: Ibrahim Zadran (#18)
Top ranked bowler: Mujeeb Ur Rahman (#3)
Top ranked all-rounder: Mohammad Nabi (#2)

Afghanistan have two players inside the top three in the ODI rankings category, with former captain Mohammad Nabi leading the way as the No.2 ranked all-rounder.

Spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman is third in the ODI bowler rankings, while fellow tweaker Rashid Khan (fourth) is not far behind in this category. Young right-hander Ibrahim Zadran is Afghanistan's highest rated batter at 18.

Australia
Top ranked batter: David Warner (#6)
Top ranked bowler: Josh Hazlewood (#2)
Top ranked all-rounder: Josh Hazlewood (#14)

In-form veteran David Warner continues to show great consistency at ODI level and is currently rated the highest Australian player on the list of ODI batters in sixth.

Experienced seamer Josh Hazlewood recently lost the No.1 ranking for bowlers to India's Mohammed Siraj, but the right-armer remains second in this category and surprisingly high 14th in the list for all-rounders.

Bangladesh
Top ranked batter: Mushfiqur Rahim (#21)
Top ranked bowler: Shakib Al Hasan (#17)
Top ranked all-rounder: Shakib Al Hasan (#1)

Evergreen skipper Shakib Al Hasan continues to re-write the record books on the eve of his fifth World Cup. with the Bangladesh star still holding on to the No.1 ranking in the category for ODI all-rounders.

Shakib has previously appeared at the 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 editions and amazingly held on to the No.1 ODI all-rounder ranking at the start of every tournament since his second appearance in 2011.

The veteran is also Bangladesh's highest ranked bowler at 17, while Mushfiqur Rahim has their best ranking for batters at 21.

England
Top ranked batter: Dawid Malan (#14)
Top ranked bowler: Chris Woakes (#12)
Top ranked all-rounder: Chris Woakes (equal #11)

The ever-consistent Dawid Malan is England's highest ranked batter, although skipper Jos Buttler (#17) is just three rungs behind the experienced No.3 and sure to press hard during the World Cup.

Reliable quick Chris Woakes holds the best ranking in both the bowling and all-rounder category, which isn't a huge surprise since the tall right-armer was a major reason why England won the most recent World Cup when he claimed 16 scalps at the 2019 event.

India
Top ranked batter: Shubman Gill (#2)
Top ranked bowler: Mohammed Siraj (#1)
Top ranked all-rounder: Hardik Pandya (#7)

India are the only side at the World Cup that can boast to have a player inside the top 10 in each ranking category and newly-crowned No.1 ranked bowler Mohammed Siraj leads the way following his match-winning spell against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final earlier this month.

That catapulted Siraj past Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood and into the top ranking for ODI bowlers, while young gun Shubman Gill is within just 10 rating points of claiming the No.1 ranking for batters from Pakistan skipper Babar Azam. The experienced Hardik Pandya is also inside the top 10 in the all-rounder category.

Netherlands
Top ranked batter: Scott Edwards (#39)
Top ranked bowler: Logan van Beek (#51)
Top ranked all-rounder: Bas de Leede (#49)

Emerging star Bas de Leede is the Netherlands' highest ranked all-rounder, but don't be surprised to see the talented xx-year-old turn a few heads with his performances in India if he can continue the form that saw him dominate the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament earlier in the year.

Reliable captain Scott Edwards remains the Netherlands' best in the ODI batter rankings at No.39, while seamer Logan van Beek holds the premier spot for the Dutch for bowlers.

New Zealand
Top ranked batter: Kane Williamson (equal #28)
Top ranked bowler: Trent Boult (#5)
Top ranked all-rounder: Mitchell Santner (equal #11)

The Kiwis have two players inside the top 10 of the ODI bowling rankings, with underrated left-armer Trent Boult leading the way in fifth ahead of fellow pacer Matt Henry in ninth.

Skipper Kane Williamson remains the leading New Zealand player on the list for batters at equal 28th despite his recent injury woes, while Mitchell Santner is equal 11th on the rankings for ODI all-rounders.

Pakistan
Top ranked batter: Babar Azam (#1)
Top ranked bowler: Shaheen Afridi (#8)
Top ranked all-rounder: Shadab Khan (#13)

Babar Azam has been a mainstay at the top of the ODI batter rankings in recent times and it comes as no surprise that the Pakistan skipper heads into this year's World Cup hanging on to the premier position.

The always dangerous Shaheen Afridi is comfortably nestled inside the top 10 of the bowler rankings, while Shadab Khan goes about his business with a minimum of fuss in 13th position on the list for ODI all-rounders.

South Africa
Top ranked batter: Rassie van der Dussen (#3)
Top ranked bowler: Keshav Maharaj (#14)
Top ranked all-rounder: Aiden Markram (equal #23)

Middle-order performer Rassie van der Dussen has been holding his ground near the top of the ODI batter rankings in recent times and the right-hander enters the World Cup with just Babar Azam and Shubman Gill in front of him in the current list.

Experienced tweaker Keshav Maharaj is 14th on the list for ODI bowlers, while Aiden Markram continues to thrive at international level and hods on the equal 23rd ranking for all-rounders.

Sri Lanka
Top ranked batter: Charith Asalanka (#27)
Top ranked bowler: Maheesh Theekshana (#16)
Top ranked all-rounder: Dhananjaya de Silva (#17)

With star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga injured and set to miss the World Cup, much of Sri Lanka's fortunes with the ball will fall to fellow tweaker Maheesh Theekshana (16th on the current ODI rankings for bowlers).

It's Charith Asalanka that is Sri Lanka's highest ranked batter at 27, while Dhananjaya de Silva occupies their best slot in the all-rounder ranks at 17.

ICC

To me, it's funny that England don't have a bowler, batsman, nor allrounder in the top 10, yet they are strong contenters for the World Cup

ICC tournaments are generally not depending on the rankings. If the team can show unity and produce the results when it is their day then the game is on. Rankings mean nothing. It is the game of mental strength when it comes to such a huge event.

And here are some emerging players who could become the stars to watch for later

==
The Cricket World Cup, which starts in India on October 5, will bring together the cream of the white ball world. The crowds will hurry to watch established stars like Ben Stokes, Virat Kohli and Trent Boult but they will also be on the lookout for the new generation of players to emerge from the tournament. AFP picks out five who will be vying to make a name for themselves.

Noor Ahmad (Afghanistan)

It is always exciting when someone a little bit different comes along and 18-year-old Noor is certainly that, a left-arm wrist spinner with a high action and good control as well as decent pace. He made his Under-19 debut for Afghanistan when he was just 14 and was only 17 when he made his full ODI debut against Sri Lanka last year and then took 4-10 against Zimbabwe in his only T20I thus far. Noor starred for Gujarat in the IPL and is in demand from numerous franchises around the world - in India he will offer important back-up to his idol and influence Rashid Khan.

Expert view from Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan: "That little kid, he just wants to learn. He has got the opportunity now and I am so, so happy he has been delivering. It's great news for Afghanistan cricket."

Matheesha Pathirana (Sri Lanka)

Since the retirement of the great Lasith Malinga after the 2019 World Cup, Sri Lanka have been looking for a shock bowler who can take wickets and tie up the batsmen at the close of the innings. In Pathirana they appear to have found the most like-for-like replacement possible. Also a slinger, with an even lower arm action than his model Malinga, the 20-year-old speedster with a penchant for yorkers, stepped into the fast lane when MS Dhoni pulled him into the Chennai IPL squad late in 2022 as a replacement for Adam Milne. With a perfect sense of theatre, he took the wicket of Shubman Gill with his first ball. He only made his ODI debut against Afghanistan in June but if Sri Lanka lift the trophy for the second time it will surely be part due to 'Baby Malinga'.

Expert view from Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood: "He absorbs information very quickly, and he's very quickly able to apply that to his game. He does it his way."

Gus Atkinson (England)

When England won the 2019 World Cup, they swore by pace. In Jofra Archer and Mark Wood they had two quicks who could go beyond the 90mph mark on a consistent basis. Wood is back again but with Archer still recovering from a long-term elbow injury -- he will be in India an official reserve -- the mantle has been handed to Atkinson. The 25-year-old paceman broke through this year with some fine early season performances that earned him an England call-up for the ODI series against New Zealand in September. He only took one wicket in three matches but it is the promise of a 95mph bowler that is exciting the English.

Expert view from former England captain Alastair Cook: "He doesn't look like he uses that much effort to get the ball down at a decent lick. It looks like there is a bit more untapped pace."

Teja Nidamanuru (Netherlands)

If it is the dream of every Indian cricketer to play in a World Cup, not many of them would expect to do it for the Netherlands. Such is the case for 29-year-old Nidamanuru who was born in Vijayawada in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh but brought up in New Zealand -- before hitching his wagon to the Dutch. Nidamanuru qualified for them in May 2022 and struck an impressive half-century on debut against West Indies. But it was his 76-ball 111 against the two-time World Cup winners in Zimbabwe in June as the Dutch tied the 375 target, that marked him out as one to watch. The West Indies, who lost the game in the Super Over, missed out on the World Cup for the first time with the Dutch taking their place at the top table.

What he says: "It's surreal to even just be sitting here and talking of playing in a World Cup. The road to it has been hard but it feels worth it."

Towhid Hridoy (Bangladesh)

From his days in the Under-19s, Hridoy was picked out as a 50-over gem and this may be the moment for the wristy middle-order dasher to take Bangladesh to their first ever World Cup final. Now 22, Hridoy began to enjoy T20 franchise success before being brought into the national side for the T20 series against England in March, guickly followed by the ODI series against Ireland. He has now chalked up five 50s in his 17 ODIs and, perhaps using a bat given to him by his mentor Mushfiqur Rahim, there may be more to come in India.

Expert view from Bangladesh assistant coach Nic Pothas: "He has a high ceiling in terms of his skills. He has a lot of potential and a desire to learn. I am excited for what he can do."

They bat deepand are good enough as a unit in bowling dep

For me the 5 stars are

1) Gill: Have a feeling he'll be india's star this time around.

2) Stokes: The guy is a world cup winner

3) Mitchell Marsh: Underrated Player

4) Wallalange: Solid spinner

5) Saud Shakeel: Pakistan will have a depressing world cup, but saud will become the breakout star this time around, he seems to love Indian conditions due to their spin friendly take.

That's quite random, out of all the players playing in this WC which have the potential you used Mitch Marsh?
Good form and he's played really well in the sub continent. Marsh us capable of winning matches as an opener and only really needs 40-80 runs to star because he scores at such a quick rate and has done so quite consistently.

We can all talk about the big guns, but some of the lesser known players that I feel we need to watch out for in this World Cup. When I say 'lesser known' I mean they are not in the league of Virat, Babar, Buttler, Bumrah etc... But can surprise everyone with their performance at the event.

Ibrahim Zadran - Afghanistan
Gerald Coetzee - South Africa
Towhid Hridoy - Bangladesh
Tanzim Hasan Sakib - Bangladesh
Bas De Leede - Netherlands
Rachin Ravindra - New Zealand
Gus Atkinson - England
Vikramjit Singh - Netherlands
Saud Shakeel - Pakistan
Dunith Wellalage - Sri Lanka

Hopefully, Pakistan go with Saud Shakeel ahead of Agha Salman.

I think they need to make a bold change by replacing Saud with Nawaz and having both Ifti and Agha share the responsibility of bowling his quota. That way u can strengthen ur middle order too!

They are not going to drop Nawaz especially after today's performance against Australia.

Five stars of the tournament so far:
  1. QDK
  2. Virat
  3. Rachin
  4. Madushanka
  5. Shaheen
SSA has been very average. His tactics haven't adjusted to right handers waiting for his inswing on leg stump, whereas someone with a brain cell or 2 would have immediately attacked the 4th stump.

The five players who've performed really well are:

Quinton de Kock
Rachin Ravindra
Rohit Sharma
Heinrich Klaasen
Marco Jansen

Third hundred for Rachin Ravindra! What a find for New Zealand

Third hundred for Rachin Ravindra! What a find for New Zealand
Yes, he is having a great world cup but today his wonderful innings wasn't enough to give New Zealand a win. Thanks to a brutal hundred by Fakhar Zaman for Pakistan.

Ricky Ponting reveals his top three players at World Cup so far
ICC Hall of Famer Ricky Ponting has revealed his best three players of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup so far, with the Australia great opting for a pair of South Africa stars and an in-form spinner.

Ponting is currently in India in his role as commentator and has seen most sides in action up close and personal as the race for the semi-final places hots up during the final week of the group stage.

While Ponting has been impressed with the way India have gelled as a team, the former World Cup winning captain shied away from including any players from the host nation when asked to name his top three players of the tournament thus far.

1. Adam Zampa (Australia)
19 wickets @ 17.15

Ponting has been impressed with the bowling efforts of Zampa, who has held together Australia's spin department almost single-handedly.

"It's very hard to go past Adam Zampa, the leading wicket taker in the tournament," Ponting said.

"He played the first two games and took no wickets and he has bounced back now sits up top with 18 or 19 wickets.

"He has been outstanding."

2. Quinton de Kock (South Africa)
545 runs @ 77.85

While the South Africa opener plans to retire from ODI at the completion of the World Cup, his form in India has been first class.

De Kock has scored four centuries at the top of South Africa's batting order and looked at ease against some of the best bowlers in the world.

"Quinton de Kock has four hundreds in this World Cup and it's probably his last World Cup," Ponting noted.

"It's very hard to go past him as he has led a very strong South African batting brigade."

3. Marco Jansen (South Africa)
16 wickets @ 20.06 and 143 runs @ 47.66

It's de Kock's South African teammate that Ponting opts for in his final spot, with tall all-rounder Marco Jansen having caught the eye of the Australian courtesy of some good efforts with bat and ball.

"The last one, I'm actually going for another South African in Marco Jansen," Ponting added.

"What he has been able to provide South Africa with the new ball taking wickets upfront, setting up their bowling innings with Powerplay wickets and also contributing with some handy low order runs."

Maxwell is kind of player who can turn any cricket match on its head and we saw this happen in today's match. He was likely to produce something special in this world cup and he has produced this special innings today.

It seems like i was the only one who had Maxwell on their list. Well done me

5 stars so far in this World Cup:

1) Shami
2) De Kock
3) Kohli
4) Ravindra
5) Fakhar (only played 3 games but made an impact).
