Now this guy has the license to say whatever he wants to. He will be making claims and unearthing some insider stuff as well. One of the glimpses of his OPENING UP.

Mohammad Hafeez during the Show said:

"All injured players are fit for the leagues"

Have to agree with him here.

This is just the way cricket is going. more leagues and less international. At this rate, bilaterals will be scrapped, we will just have league cricket and the odd ICC event.

Think the way he said it was as if by magic all fitness issues go away when they play in Leagues.

He has a point.

This is the beginning of the end.

only very few players played for Pakistan. The vast majority did it for the money. Now easy money available elsewhere, why bother with Internationals.

In 2-3 years most leagues will be defunct or severely scaled down, because none of them are really making money or attracting viewership. Big bash, Hundred etc still make money through ticket sales and have decent turnout, on top of television/marketing deals.

The rest especially the PSL and BPL.will scale down to control expenditure. The leagues will be viable but at a smaller scale and more localised. I don't see the myriad of middle east leagues lasting long.

Which will mean playing B-grade T20 leagues will cease to be a career option soon. Also the top 3-4 teams will continue to play tests and bilaterals.

Because in leagues, they bowl only 4 overs. Since Mohammad Amir is playing in franchise leagues, he has never gotten injured and has hardly missed any matches.

The preference and effort put in by certain players for leagues instead of international cricket is befuddling.

He's spot on. All these shameless players care about money and playing for the country comes second to these players.

Cant think of any other major sport where players are split between so many formats. One format makes it more simple to understand, easier to schedule, more specialisation (thus higher quality opposed to a player trying to master all three formats), and lower risk of injuries. There’s a reason why most sports only have one format. And yet we have three, on top of a split between internationals and club which isnt timetabled like football.

If we only had tests, it would hurt viewership massively and would lead to cricket being played less allowing cricketers to rest.

If we only had t20s, viewership would likely stay the same or increase, be more profitable, less injuries, allow people to watch the entire matches which could be scheduled in peak viewing times. Who are being hurt are the test cricket purists who will naturally reduce in number every year.

International cricket and ICC events pull greater numbers than these leagues alone. However if you split these between three formats, they will not compete with leagues, and eventually they will lose to leagues entirely. There are players playing league and not country not because they don’t want to play internationals. They just don’t want to play longer formats and risk injury.

For most players (Pakistan and other teams), leagues seem to be higher priorities. More money for less work.

It is not nice but it is what it is.

Apparently Hafeez said it took him 2 months to convince Babar to play at number 3 in T20s

Can someone please share that clip

It took 2 months to convince Babar to do the right thing for his country? I am absolutely shocked!

It's happening world wide. Deepak Chahar, Iyer two recent examples who don't bother to play ranji cricket and just play IPL.
Situation has gotten so bad that there has been an email sent to every player to priortize Ranji before IPL.

Having said that it's also weird for boards to ask the players to priortize domestic cricket when they themselves as an entity don't pay much attention to them. There aer still many ranji matches which aren't broadcasted for example.

Isn't Iyer in India's test squad?

That's why I appreciated Hafeez's role as Director of Pakistan cricket because of his strict approach in granting NOCs for leagues.

Yeah I think that's definitely true. What we have today is not sustainable. Most every country will move to a home league + 1 formula. For the top stars, it will be home league + IPL. For the rest, they'll have to make a choice.

So 2+2 months of league cricket and maybe 4-5 months of international cricket. That's what it has to come down to.

It looks like Babar and Rizwan will open at the T20 World Cup we can only hope for the best in high scoring matches they can’t even finish matches in domestic cricket.

They love playing in these Micky Mouse leagues but they and the nation should then not cry when none of their players get rated alongside the best in the world and when the experts don't rate the team as well.

I haven’t been a Pakistan cricket fan since 2021. Personally I don’t mind these two opening so that I can continue to support every opposition against a Pakistan side adamant on selfish individuals

Hafeez is spitting some hard-to-digest facts. Many players are doing this ATM and he is right whatever he said.

"It depends on the will of a player" - Mohammad Hafeez hits out at Pakistan bowlers for workload management excuse
Former Pakistan batter Mohammad Hafeez has slammed the Men in Green bowlers' push for workload management during his tenure as team director.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently decided to part ways with Hafeez three months after his assignment as team director. Due to the demands of a packed international schedule with several T20 Leagues, pacers worldwide have been rested as part of workload management in recent years.

Speaking on a panel discussion with A Sports, Hazfeez despised the term 'workload management' and said he wasn't even aware of it during his playing days.

"I have played cricket for 18 years, but this is something we never heard in our days. It depends on the will of a player. If he wants to play, he will; otherwise, he will talk about his workload. I was with the team for two months, and it was difficult for me to understand the workload management. It is essential to manage the work of fast bowlers, but it doesn’t mean that he will bowl only four overs," said Hafeez.

Although Hafeez did not mention names, the likes of Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi could have been the cases in point.

While Rauf opted out of the recent Australia Tests, Afridi was rested for the final game of the three-match Test series, citing workload management. Pakistan suffered a humiliating 0-3 series whitewash at the hands of the Aussies.

"Shamar Joseph bowled 12 overs on the trot" - Mohammad Hafeez
Mohammad Hafeez further cited the example of young West Indian pacer Shamar Joseph bowling 12 overs on the bounce in the second Test against Australia to dismiss the need for workload management.

After suffering a toe injury the previous day, the 24-year-old burst through the Aussie lineup with figures of 7/68 in an extended spell to help the West Indies seal a historic eight-run win at the Gabba.

"Your practice and training should be hard enough to help you execute your plans in the game. When a batter scores a 100, 150 or 200, he doesn’t say that he is done and won’t carry on. Shamar Joseph bowled 12 overs on the trot. Thank God, the word workload management was not in his mind," said Hafeez.

Joseph's spell helped the West Indies end their 27-year-long Test winless streak in Australia.

Meanwhile, Pakistan endured a dismal 1-4 T20I series defeat in New Zealand, following the Test series hammering in Australia during Hafeez's short tenure.

Hafeez is correct but he's stating the obvious. The real question is who/what is to blame - is it the players/leagues or the PCB?

I think players are at fault because they are the ones who must decide whether they should run for money or prioritize their country first which gave them the identity that they are being selected for leagues now.

It is a combination. The players are in it for the money but so are the PCB officials.
Hafeez for example is now getting paid for his professional opinion by the media. He claims he doesn't understand the concept of rest and recovery.
But when he was getting paid by the PCB he had this to say about resting Shaheen.

"He bowled really well in those two games and bowled the most of any bowler," he said. "When I asked him before the third Test, his body was sore. And I need to look after him more than anything."

"If someone thinks their body is sore and they can't deliver the best, we need to look after the career of the individual. I will never make a decision where a player can lose his career for six months or a year. It was a tough call but we made that decision for the betterment of the players. Because we cannot make that decision at the cost of a player's career."
