[VIDEO] Anushka Sharma hits back after Sunil Gavaskar’s comment about Virat Kohli’s performance

Kangana Ranaut criticised Sunil Gavaskar for taking Anushka Sharma’s name in his commentary during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab on Thursday. However, Kangana also accused Anushka of ‘selective feminism’.

“#Anushka remained quiet when I was threatened and called ********* but today the same misogyny coming to bite her, I condemn the fact that she was dragged in to cricket by #SunilGavaskar but selective feminism is equally uncool,” she wrote on Twitter.

Kangana said in a follow-up tweet that Sunil Gavaskar’s comments did not have a sexual connotation but he should not have mentioned Anushka, nevertheless. “Only a sex starved pervert will find sexual context to #SunilGavaskar’s statement which he made on national television for a woman, he should’ve not mentioned her, but Anushka is playing a cricketer in her next and there are several videos of her practising with her husband,” she wrote.

Earlier this month, Kangana was called a ‘********* ladki’ by Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut after she likened Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Some of her colleagues from the film industry including Ranvir Shorey, Dia Mirza and Anubhav Sinha came out in support of her and condemned the remarks.

On Thursday, Sunil Gavaskar, while commenting on Virat Kohli’s batting, had made a reference to Anushka. The former cricketer said that Virat practised only to Anushka’s bowling during the lockdown, referring to a viral video of them playing cricket on their terrace in May, and added that it would do nothing to improve his performance on the field.

Anushka took to Instagram stories to hit back at him for his ‘distasteful’ comments. “That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husband’s game? I’m sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commentating on the game. Don’t you think you should have equal amount of respect for me and us?,” she asked.

“I’m sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband’s performance from last night or are your words only relevant if you use my name in the process? It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements? Respected Mr Gavaskar, you are a legend whose name stands tall in this gentleman’s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this,” she added.

Sunil Gavaskar, meanwhile, has denied allegations of sexism and said that he was only commenting about Virat’s inability to strike the ball due to ‘lack of practice’. “Virat also had no practice and the only practice that they had was when they were seen playing in their building compound and Anushka was bowling to him. That’s what I said. That’s the only bowling, I have not used any other word. She was bowling to him, that’s all. Where am I blaming her? Where am I being sexist in this?,” he told India Today.

This vile lady has to butt in everything. Such a nuisance!

Why SSR why?

There is a very thin line between Anushka and Rakhi Sawant now. :inti
Now thats taking it too far. Anushka had some decent releases prior to lockdown and has produced some good web content of late. As for Rakhi, 'nuf said.

The self proclaimed first lady of Indian cricket. No wonder it started a rift between Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Bollywood itself thrives on freedom of speech. Them overreacting to stuff is hypocrisy of the highest order.

All said and done, sometimes you look at the age and profile of someone and let go many little things which this exactly was.

When Gavaskar speaks, people listen with respect. I don't know Anushka even knows how big of an Indian icon Gavaskar is, Kohli is clearly coming out as the biggest loser and sufferer in this :)) putting up with this drama queen.

I think Anushka was well within her right to respond given the fact that this isnt the first time she is being associated with Kohli's lack of performances. Gavasker's comments could surely have made the fans blame her again.

I wonder if Gavaskar will now feel the wrath of BCCI and be 'rested' for future series.

Seems that players and those close to them hold some power over BCCI.

Will be surprised if so happens. Gavaskar is no small man and he has no dearth of support in the Bcci.

Apt response from Anuskha to an extremely distasteful and needless comment by Gavaskar.

Indians need to stop dragging Anuskha into everything Virat Kohli and stop being such misogynist pigs.

Sorry, but whatever's Gavaskar status is in no way allows him the right to bring's people's partners into a discussion needlessly. He should stay in his limits.

Don't be surprised if Sunny is suddenly taken off air by the BCCI.

Talk about overreacting. Just makes Kohli look like a complete fool by this reaction. Then again you never know ,maybe it was just a publicity stunt to stay relevant

I don't know whether I'm allowed to say this but I never really understood what Virat saw in her. She looks bang average even a slightly repulsive looker to me. Should thank SRK for making a career out of nothing there.

Talk about an over reaction from Mrs Kholi. It's just a light hearted joke by Gavaskar.

Looks like we will have the Indian version of Megan and Harry soon.

Renowned Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma is returning to films after a maternity hiatus with Chakda Xpress, a Netflix original inspired by the life of former Indian women’s cricket team captain.

Writing about the same in an Instagram post, Anushka shared, “Chakda Xpress is a really special film because it is essentially a story of tremendous sacrifice. It is an eye-opener into the world of women’s cricket.”

The actor claimed this biopic would explore how Jhulan’s decision to become a cricketer, “at a time when it was very tough for women to even think of playing the sport in India,” changed her life. “This film is a dramatic retelling of several instances that shaped her journey and women’s cricket,” continued Anushka. Provided women in India and Pakistan face a similar nature of criticism when venturing into occupations thought to be reserved for men, Chakda Xpress may hit too close to home.

But the star is also being trolled for her Bengali accent since the film’s teaser came out. Many are calling out Anushka for casting herself in a role that does not do justice to the cricketing legend. "As much as I love her, she does not fit this role..." tweeted a fan.

A fast bowler, Jhulan holds the world record for the highest number of wickets in an international career that spanned from 2002 to 2021. Chakda Xpress is set to trace her journey as she moves up the ladder despite the misogynistic politics being played on the side.

Shot in India and the UK, Chakda Xpress is produced by Sharma and Karnesh Sharma's Clean Slate Filmz. It will be the second Netflix film for Clean Slate Filmz after Bulbbul (2020).
