Boxing Day tensions rise again after India’s latest media stunt at the MCG

The tension between Indian cricketers and Australian journalists are on the rise again after a strange and frosty media conference at the MCG on Saturday.

India’s Ravindra Jadeja faced reporters but the Australian media were bemused and confused when the star allrounder refused to answer questions in English.

It was obviously an annoying situation for the journalists who made the effort to turn up, and comes just days after Indian legend Virat Kohli’s blow-up at Melbourne Airport.

In that heated exchanged, Kohli was frustrated by the cameras and took aim at a TV reporter.

At the MCG on Saturday, India’s media team pointed to reporters who were allowed to ask questions, and even acknowledged a few Australian journalists.

But Jadeja only responded in his native language.

The press conference was then wrapped up when he told the journalists that he had to get the bus.

Afterwards, India’s media team said the conference was for “travelling Indian media only”, even though Australian media was invited.

India has been particularly fickle with the media during this series, however, this is the first time they have not spoken in English at a press conference.

The tension has been bubbling away from the very start of the series when India coach Gautam Gambhir told Aussie legend Ricky Ponting to mind his own business.

Gambhir was upset after Ponting made some observations about the deteriorating form of beloved Indian legend Virat Kohli and the team’s captain, Rohit Sharma.

Indian players then refused to talk to the media in the build-up to the Perth Test.

Things exploded in Melbourne however, when Kohli lashed out at the airport.

Kohli appeared to be upset by the presence of cameras directed at his family.

After a tense conversation with a TV reporter, Kohli walked off before turning back and having a few more words.

“It was upon seeing the waiting cameras that Kohli became a little heated over what is largely a misunderstanding when he thought the media was filming him with his children,” Channel 7 reporter Theo Doropoulos said on 7NEWS.

Kohli said he could not be filmed without permission, however, that’s not true given he was in a public place.

He did take a minute to clear the air with media once it was explained his kids in fact weren’t being filmed and even shook the Channel 7 cameraman’s hand.

Kohli has struggled for form in recent years, but did making a fighting century in the first Test in Perth.

However, his four other bats have combined for a total of just 26 runs.

The Border-Gavaskar series is delicately poised at 1-1 after the third Test in Brisbane was a draw.

The crucial fourth Test begins on Boxing Day at the MCG before the gripping series heads to Sydney for the final Test.

If he has not responded to Aus journo questions it is wrong, however if he has responded in his native language then it is player's choice and should not be criticized

When Aussies come to India and only speak in English, why is that not an issue?

I know why he did that. It might get a bit political, but there’s no harm in speaking in your mother tongue.

Who cares. Serves them right.

Aus reporters are pathetic. Scums.

I hope pakistani players too speak in urudu in the future.

Already doing that as no one can understand their English as is (barring a few)
It's not their problem. Players can have translators if they want too. They are not obligated to respond to reporters.

I hate it when people mock babar or a young Dhoni for their lack of English speaking skills. Babar has Improved btw but it is really not required at all. In saying that speaking English well could help him be more e marketable. That's about it. More chances for add revenue etc.

How rude. Speak in English your dufus, you are not in India and he knows English..

I'm not sure what is gained by being deliberately obnoxious like this.

Just answer their questions and go and play hard cricket on the pitch.

Media is media everywhere. Always want some masala news to hype tge ratings. If this was a WI player- ans say he spoke in his local guyanese language- nobody would even care. With Ind - everything is hyped out intentionally for TV ratings. Simple as that. Much ado about nothing honestly

Its funny how the indian team is trying to create hype of the series by such gimmicks.

Australians dont care about cricket or you guys. Plus its christmas season and even if anyone is watching the sport they are just watching it for leisure. No one cares about it.

Esl speaking nation decides to answer questions in hindi, breaking news lol

Indians are always trying to portray the australian series as a derby. So to keep up with this, they try to act like this. For example, Siraj trying to do stupid acts while being wicketless or doing over the top celebration against a guy who gave you a phainty.

You indulge in such acts if the opposition takes you as a proper rival. Like the South Africa vs Australia series where De Kock and co Vs Smith and co. Both sides finding ways to get on top of each other.

Meanwhile, the Australians dont care about these guys, but lol. Let the desperation for attention by Indians is just appealing.

Aussies only care about icc events + Ashes. No one besides India cares about BGT, all marketing hype from desperate Indians who are trying to impose themselves on Cricket's oldest tradition between Cricket's oldest sides.

Jadeja could speak in English, have just seen one of his old interview. Clearly this has something to do with Kohli controversy otherwise no media has a right to force a player answer in a language alien to him.

I dont blame Jadeja, he cannot speak English properly. Neither can Jaiswal, Siraj, Shami etc.

Why should they be forced to speak english?

Are you aware cricket is not a top sport in Australia? Most Australians don't follow cricket.
They were sports journalists and cricket correspondents. It is their job to ask question and interact with cricketers.

Not sure what cricket being unpopular sport in Australia has got anything to do with it.

Bruno Fernandez and Cristiano Ronaldo refused to speak in English during FIFA WC 2022 and only interacted in Portugese as they were on national duty playing for Portugal.

Good points, Indians try hard to build equivalence with Australia and it comes off as very corny.

There are two type of Australian responses:

Minority group like Warner who are happy to dance on tiktok for IPL and try to suck up to indians hardcore for IPL and Indian media money and views. Indians like any third worlders love foreign validation, they know that.

Secondly, there are players like Cummins, Starc who know that Indians would pay top dollar for them in IPL and literally humiliate them on their face. Cummins goes out of his way to crap on indians and i find it hilarious :yk

The point remains, score line is still 1-1 and 3 tests are now over.

Just read the pre match thread and how your fellow jealous friends were adamant that Australia will beat India badly, how Cummins will run over India etc etc. I am sure you will find it more hilarious :yk

You live there so you know better.

Its just funny the desperation.

Meanwhile the indian posters celebrating jadejas speaking hindi, while typing it in english over here loll..

Its ironic

Aussies don't care about cricket in a Rivalry sense.

They enjoy test cricket the most and enjoy watching test cricket. However Ashes is something they take seriously due to age old traditions.

The UK and Aus do have a cricketing Rivalry from a test perspective mainly because of reasons that date back to ww2 and political tensions the 2 countries had over a 100 years ago.

Icc events + Ashes and that's it.

Indians on the other hand have this weird obsession with Australia. 1B Indians and yet year by year they want to immigrate to Australia or Canada simply because USA has made it next to impossible to immigrate for Indians without marriage or birthright. H1-B is now impossible unless you're a ceo.

And then they cry when their booted because 90% of them think it's funny to start scam call center businesses here.

this is why their whole nationalism is flawed.

Its funny when they get booted than they cry discrimination and when they make discriminating rules in IPL they call it our league we can operate any way we want.

Indians always wanted the approval of whites. their so called australia rivalry is one side love, where Australia has friendzoned them.

I'm loving it when certain sections of fan's are crying very hard.

Good from Jaddu. Kheech ke rakho

Good observation.

They do all sorts of discriminations themselves. But, when they get a taste of their own medicine, they act like victims.

Australia respects NZ and UK when it comes to Friendly relationships and with USA they have friendly relationships as well.

Cricket wise, politics wise, or whatever it is, Indians are nothing more then people who immigrate to aus cause they want to run away from their rubbish country.

The only issue I have with aus is that it's way way too easy for anyone aged 18-24 to get pr and citizenship. It's seen an influx of hypocritical Indians who pay tax to aus, play cricket for aus, Start businesses in aus, but still have the audacity to praise the country they ran away from and bad mouth the country they currently live in. Meanwhile you will never see a pakistani in aus badmouth the country nor will you see them start scam call centers and get booted out.

Usman Khawaja is the pride of pakistani Australians.

Even hype machine campaigns about BGT in aus are started by Indians who creates their own rubbish advertising agencies.

anyways, good luck to jadeja, whatever he was trying to pull off.

Misleading and confusing headline.

Did he refuse to answer in English or did he refuse to answer the Aus media?

Two completely different things

I like that, why not , its players choice . And, I like the tension building up between two team, just spicing up the contest , too much on stake now . BGT and the place for WTC final on the line.

The thread is clearly about Jadeja and English Not about whether cricket is famous in Australia or not.

Jadeja should be allowed to speak in whatever language he is comfortable. Anyways, even when speaking Hindi, he speaks such long statements that it is sometimes really hard to understand what exactly he is trying to say. He is simply not a good speaker.

A fantastic cricketer though. Now Ashwin is retired and his name is already cemented among all time greats of the game and given India already were such a GOAT Asian test team over last 10 years, it’s time to focus on Jadeja and ensure his name also gets cemented among the greats of the game as he already has ATG level stats and impact. It will be fun as it is an easier job than it was for Ashwin. :inti

If Jadeja is an ATG, then India should just quit playing cricket and be shocked at the lack off talent in the country?

Bumrah who?

‘So unnecessary. All of it’: Match boycotted as Boxing Day tensions build after ‘hopeless’ MCG act

Tensions have continued to build ahead of the Boxing Day Test, now with the Indian media joining the furore involving their national team against the Australian contingent.

A day after a controversial incident at the MCG, where a scheduled press conference for both English and Hindi media with India’s Ravindra Jadeja turned into a Hindi-only chat before he was ushered away, a planned media match was boycotted.

Indian media and backroom team members were scheduled to play a friendly T20 match against their Australian counterparts at Melbourne’s Junction Oval on Sunday, after it was organised by Cricket Australia.

But The Age reported India’s media manager boycotted the event, after his central role in the MCG mess, leading media members to follow his lead and without enough players for a full team, the match was cancelled.

It only adds to the bizarre, behind-the-scenes battle which blew up on Saturday.

After a half-hour delay in the scheduled media appearance, Jadeja began taking questions from Indian journalists; a process that deviated from the standard procedure this series of first answering questions in English.

Following nine minutes of discussion in Hindi, India’s media manager ended the presser before local reporters could ask anything of Jadeja — despite requests from some in attendance for a response in English.

India’s reasoning for Jadeja’s departure was that he might have otherwise missed the team bus.

Upon Jadeja’s exit, one journalist could he heard telling the media manager the arrangement was “disorganised and hopeless.”

India’s media manager also requested Channel 9 turn off its running camera at the ground, with journalist Trent Kniese heard reminding him that “he’s allowed to film”.

It comes days after an altercation involving Virat Kohli at Melbourne Airport, which saw the superstar batter in an animated conversation with a journalist over the alleged filming of his family and children.

While there is no insinuation it is an issue for press conferences to begin in a language other than English, Sydney Morning Herald writer Tom Decent noted it was highly unusual for no questions to be asked in the host country’s tongue; whether that be by Australian or touring media.

Some reporters have written online that Saturday’s event was for travelling press only, but that claim has since been quashed.

Contrary to reports from some Australian journalists, some Indian media outlets denied allegations of a one-way press conference.

Subhayan Chakraborty from Rev Sportz was at the presser, later alleging that “Australian media is at it again, and you can call it dark arts”.

Chakraborty stated Australian media “didn’t create a fuss” when fast bowler Harshit Rana spoke to reporters exclusively in Hindi during the first Test”.

“Some of the members of the Australian media were present at the press conference. They misbehaved with the Indian media manager and some of the journalists in a visually aggressive manner. Ideally, their video journalists should not have recorded the private conversation at the MCG despite repeated requests from us,” an Indian journalist told Rev Sportz in the aforementioned article.

SEN cricket commentator Bharat Sundaresan reshared vision of the press conference on X with the caption: “So unnecessary. All of it.”

The fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series kicks off at 10:30am AEDT on Thursday, with the series levelled at 1-1.

If Jadeja can end this series with good numbers in Australia with both bat and bowl, he will go down as an ATG test cricketer.

He will have phenomenal record in India, SL, WI and Aus and all that over a more than decent sample. His overall career sample will also be 80 tests.

In South Africa, he averages 25 with bowl already. In England, his stats are okayish too given that he has a test hundred and a decent number of wickets.

Overall, he has done well all round and ticked all the boxes. If he fails with bowl, he performs with bat and if he fails with bat, he performs with bowl too. Always among top 3 bowlers and top 4 batters of a given series which is phenomenal. He has ticked all the boxes.

The GOAT Asian Test team has produced 4 ATGs - Kohli( all format ATG), Ashwin, Jadeja and Bumrah.

This maybe new for Pakistanis but we are used to this form of psychological media attacks in Australia since a long time.

Australians treat you as cute little puppies when you are a nothing team and keep losing test series to them without offering any fight.

The moment you become a half decent team and start to compete, that’s when the defensive propaganda machinery becomes active of which media has always been the most prominent weapon.

And when god forbid you start winning in Australia, that’s when the propaganda machinery starts working without sleep.

2003-04 era , Ganguly was their biggest target.

2007-08, it was Harbhajan

2010s onwards, Virat Kohli

Having said that, now that we have had too much experience as a successful touring nation in Australia, we are not surprised by these things as much as we used to be back in the last. We know how the Aussies operate and we have become used to it.

Virat and Jadeja knew very well what they were doing. They’re seasoned Aussie beaters and will show them what they’re made of at MCG, SCG.

Aussies know very well they didn’t want to go to Bharat’s two favorite venues in Australia being 1-1. They blew their chances and have given the Bharatiya team a sniff of another series win. The nervousness and the Panick can be sensed from miles away.

many indian fans are deluded here that Kohli acted as some freedom fighter and Jadeja pulled of a marvelous trick.

These two tests coming up will go a long way in deciding Jadeja’s legacy. It is clear that Australians are trying to take a shot on him because of all the OGs from the GOAT Asian Test team formed in 2016, the one who hasn’t gone out of gas yet is none other than RJ.

Ashwin has drawn curtains to his career while Kohli and Rohit are just enjoying paid vacations before they finally call it off. Shami is not there in this team so they obviously want to trick against Jadeja but he is a veteran and this is his moment to show Australians who is the real boss now having done it with the Invincibles group twice in 2018 and 2020.

Australia team is can't win a test series against india Even a home. After intentionally scheduling the toughest venues upfront ,still series scoreline is 1-1 after three test .

So they are taking the help from Media's to pressurized indian players but they will not succeed .

Yes, spot on.

I forgot to include my favourite emoji in my last post but I will make sure I add it this time. :inti

There have been a few controversies ahead of the Boxing Day Test (4th Test between Australia and India), such as Ravindra Jadeja not taking any questions in English during a press meet for the traveling Indian media. Similarly, Akash Deep's press meet was conducted in Hindi. In response to this, former Australian cricketer Simon Katich commented while speaking to the local media:

“Obviously, there’s been a few things unfolding in the last week or so, that haven’t gone down well at that camp. It’s probably just the mind games being played, given the enormity of this series."

“The media are here to promote the game and I don’t know what the Indians are thinking at the moment. That’s their problem.”
