Don't you have close connections to the military?

If even you have turned against them (the constant use of 'neutral baba' across threads) - it proves that they have really messed up.

Again, I think PTI supporters need to calm down. Elections are not coming nor is Khan coming to power again. Mark my words!

I have relatives in the army. They are very very unhappy with the current neutrals. The rest i get from chatter and putting the various information together.

I am not against the institution and you known this but the current neutral baba has messed up to the extent he will be lucky if he can go out onto the street when he retires.

There is a reckoning coming be it now or in the next 5 years..

Again, I think PTI supporters need to calm down. Elections are not coming nor is Khan coming to power again. Mark my words!

There is the potential for something worse coming..IK is somebody who wants to work in the system. But those coming after him will not think the same way..there will be a reckoning very soon..

Let me tell you , people are angry, frustrated and desperate. I have not seen so much hate foe institutions in my life. I hope the common sense prevails and if not IK but a stable government comes in.

This is what is puzzling people..now I have heard on social media and YouTube etc that people are openly saying neutral baba is compromised.

In the past many would support coups etc because the would get rid of the corrupt choars etc.but people can't comprehend getting rid of an honest man at the whim of amreeka bahadur.

Sooner or later a reckoning is coming..people can only take so much..is this what baba jee wants??

You will hardly fins someone supporting them now. that is sad reality.

How is that a sad reality? They are responsible for putting us where we are as a nation, half of our existence has been under their rule.

This momentum should be encouraged and all political parties must add to their manifesto of securing civilian supremacy. We're the only country where the security of the head of state is under the military, in any other country that job is for the civilians. Our PM seat is held hostage.

Sad in the sense that people have stopped trusting the institutions.

LAHORE: Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah Monday said that for the PML-N, the idea of early elections is on the cards but the final decision in this regard will be mutually made by the coalition parties.

Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, the interior minister said the PML-N is, was, and will be bound by the coalition parties' decision regarding the dissolution of the assemblies.

"The decision will be made after we present the matter before the parties," said the interior minister.

Talking about the Punjab by-elections on July 17 and PML-N's defeat against the PTI, Sanaullah said that his party was "moving forward by accepting the results".

"The 20 seats do not challenge or measure the PML-N's popularity as the candidates who were electioneering for these constituencies were not ours," he added.

The PML-N leader said that all the 20 seats belonged to the PTI, out of which "we won five".

Calling it a "timely defeat", Sanaullah said that the party will have discussions with these candidates in the next elections.

The interior minister said that the party thinks Punjab Assembly Speaker Parvez Elahi should not be allowed to become the chief minister that easily as he is "neither democratic nor tolerant and does not respect anyone".

Berating PTI Chairperson Imran Khan for targeting Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja, Sanaullah said that he was attacking the CEC since the commission had reserved its verdict on PTI's foreign funding case.

"You [Imran Khan] blackmail institutions just to get your own way," he said, adding that the PML-N condemns Khan's blackmailing and that he will not be allowed to act this way. "We stand with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)."

Following the PTI chairperson's demand for CEC's resignation, the PML-N leader said that "this crazy person is still talking about elections getting rigged even after winning them."

"Would you [Imran Khan] believe in transparent elections only if you had won 20 out of 20 seats?" asked Sanaullah. He said that his party is standing with the ECP even after facing defeat in the elections.

LAHORE / KARACHI: Amid the opposition ******tan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) fresh demand for early general elections after registering a thumping victory in the crucial Punjab by-elections on Sunday, the two main component parties of the ruling coalition — the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and ******tan Peoples Party (PPP) — on Monday insisted the Nat*ional Assembly will complete its term until mid-next year, and general elections be held after the government carries out electoral reforms and fixes the economy.

Nonetheless, for some introspection in the wake of the humiliating defeat his party faced at the hands of the PTI in the by-polls, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has invited the leadership of all coalition parties to Lahore on Tuesday (today) to discuss the option of fresh polls.

However, after a meeting of PML-N stalwarts in Model Town, Lahore, presided over by PM Shehbaz, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah did hint that the party would stick to its stance of going to polls after completing the incumbent assembly’s tenure in August 2023.

“A decision to hold early elections will be made in consultation with all allied parties. However, the PML-N’s point of view hasn’t changed — next elections should be held after completion of the government’s tenure,” the minister told a press conference on Monday.

Mr Sanaullah and fellow federal minister Mian Javed Latif have both said their party might consider fresh polls, provided PTI chief Imran Khan dissolved the Punjab and KP assemblies. Sanaullah also voiced the government’s support for the election commission members in the face of Imran’s onslaught on them.

Moreover, Information Minister Marriyum Aurang*zeb said on the invitation of the premier, a meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement and allied parties would be held on Tuesday (today) at Mr Sharif’s Lahore residence. “The leadership of these parties will deliberate on important and national issues,” she said in a statement. PML-N-chief Nawaz Sharif will join the meeting through a video link from London.

A party source said neither the PML-N nor its two main coalition partners – PPP and JUI-F – were willing to concede to the early election demand of Imran Khan. “The PTI chairman may be offered to hold talks over the matter, but the coalition government will take the decision that suits it,” he said.

He further said that at this point, giving in to Khan’s demand meant allowing the PTI to return to power as its chief’s popularity graph was on a constant rise and the Punjab by-poll results were evident of it. “Besides, the ruling coalition has yet to fix the economy, a major reason it cited for coming to power after toppling Khan’s government in April, and carry out election reforms. Until it meets these goals, the ruling coalition may not agree to snap polls,” he said.

During the party meeting, the prime minister was briefed about the reasons for the PML-N’s defeat on 15 of the 20 seats of Punjab Assembly in the by-polls. “Awarding tickets to PTI defectors that left PML-N workers disgruntled and disinterested in the election campaign, unpopular decisions of the coalition government of making huge increases in petroleum and electricity prices, rising inflation and related matters were the main reasons cited for the defeat,” a PML-N leader told Dawn.

Mission: Save Hamza

PM Shehbaz and his party leaders also discussed possible measures to save Hamza Shehbaz’s office of the chief minister. The incumbent CM is certain to lose to PTI-PML-Q joint candidate Chaudhry Parvez Elahi after failing to win 11 seats to achieve a majority in the house where the joint opposition now has 188 members.

“We will not let Mr Elahi become the CM easily. If five to seven PTI lawmakers don’t come to the assembly on the voting day (July 22), how will the PTI have its chief minister?” Sanaullah questioned.

Reportedly, the PML-N has been working on either ‘detaining’ a few PTI lawmakers in different cases or luring some of them with lucrative packages to abstain from voting.

Nawaz, Zardari, Fazl discussion

The ruling coalition elders – PML-N’s Nawaz Sharif, PPP’s Asif Zardari and JUI-F’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman – spoke to each other separately over the phone and discussed the situation post the PTI victory.

According to a source, the trio agreed that any decision about early general elections would be taken in consultation with all allied parties. “They were of the view that the coalition government of nine parties should take no such decision in haste or under Imran’s pressure,” he maintained.

PPP CEC meeting

Meanwhile, over in Karachi, the PML-N’s main coalition ally, the PPP, insisted on completion of the National Assembly’s term for “crucial electoral reforms and constitutional amendments”, vowing “to stand with the allies in these testing times”.

The party’s fresh resolve came at its central executive committee (CEC) meeting chaired by PPP chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari where senior leaders discussed the emerging political situation, and performance of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government so far. They also shared their thoughts about the party’s future strategy and plan to reactivate itself in Punjab where the PTI had regained its ground and stunned the PML-N in its stronghold.

Sources privy to the discussion said the participants were almost consensual that the PPP should not support early elections, as being demanded by the PTI. The meeting, which lasted for more than two hours, also approved the decision to attend Tuesday’s meeting in Lahore of leaders of the federal government’s allies with a clear opinion about the current assembly’s term.

“The PPP is very clear that this [National] assembly should complete its term,” said Sindh information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who’s also the PPP’s CEC member, while talking to reporters after the meeting outside Bilawal House. “We want this, so parliament can make crucial constitutional amendments and undertake electoral reforms. Once they are done and the assembly completes its term, we will definitely want free and fair elections.”

He further said the PPP had a history of loyalty towards its allies, and the recent political setback to its coalition partner in Punjab won’t affect its partnership with any of the allied parties. The PPP would support any decision taken consensually by the coalition.

“We never betray our allies,” said Mr Memon. “Whatever the results of Punjab by-polls are, we stand with our allies. We also believe that any political challenge can be met with unity and harmony among the saner political entities. The Punjab by-polls have also exposed all the lies of [PTI chairman] Imran Khan. He should apologise to the chief election commissioner for leading a propaganda campaign against him.”

The coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that it will complete its constitutional tenure despite a major setback in the Punjab by-polls.

“We came into power in the larger interest of the country… we knew that they [PTI government] had laid economic landmines for us but we took tough decisions to save the country,” Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique said while addressing a joint press conference following an important meeting of PDM alliance parties and government officials held in Model Town, Lahore on Tuesday to deliberate upon the country's political and economic situation.

The railways minister said Punjab by-polls was not a barometer to gauge popularity and added that his party snatched five provincial assembly seats from PTI in the by-polls.

“Provincial governments also have a right to complete their terms… by-poll is not a barometer of popularity and we snatched their [PTI’s] five seats which shows that our vote bank is intact,” he remarked.

Calling PTI Chairman Imran Khan a “misguided and mischievous” man, Rafique said the former had always done politics with the support of ‘umpires’.

“He wants chief justice, army chief and other [heads of institutions] of his own choice in a bid to exercise control over them,” he added.

The ruling party leader said opposition leaders were put behind bars and subjected to victimisation during the tenure of PTI-led government “but the judiciary was asleep at that time”.

He said that the coalition government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided in principle that the next general elections in the country will be held on time as ally parties refused to budge under the pressure of former prime minister and PTI chief Imran Khan.

Basking in Punjab by-poll glory, Imran Khan on Monday reiterated his demand for holding fresh elections in the country under a new chief election commissioner (CEC).

Addressing the nation after chairing a meeting of the PTI Core Committee, the former prime minister had emphasised that the only way to end the current political crisis in the country was to hold immediate clean and transparent elections.

Sunday’s by-elections were held after 20 PTI lawmakers were de-seated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for voting against the party line in the election of Punjab chief minister in April.

However, defying all odds, the PTI clinched 15 provincial assembly seats out of the 20 up for grabs, dealing a stunning blow to the 13-party alliance led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on its home turf. The ruling PML-N could only bag four seats.

Today’s meeting was co-chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Maulana Shah Owais Noorani, Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz, MQM-Pakistan leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Aviation Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, Ayaz Sadiq, Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Shah Zain Bugti, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, Mushahid Hussain Syed, Akram Durrani, Tariq Bashir Cheema, Ahad Cheema, Ayaz Sadiq, Salik Hussain, Mohsin Dawar, Aslam Bhootani, Fahad Hussain and other leaders were also present.

In view of the prevailing political situation, constitutional and legal options were considered to keep a hold on CM Hamza’s government in Punjab, insiders earlier told Express News.

The PML-N leaders briefed the participants regarding the number game in the Punjab Assembly, while consultations were held on the strategy regarding the re-election of the Leader of the House on July 22.

According to the sources present in the meeting, PDM parties and government allies decided not to hold early elections in the country and it was decided that early elections will not be held under the pressure of Imran Khan but under the unanimous decision of the government alliance.

The insiders said it was also decided in the meeting that a new government narrative will be brought forward to break Imran Khan's ‘anti-establishment’ narrative.

Rafique, in today's presser, said the participants of the meeting also expressed reservations over Supreme Court’s verdict on Article 63-A related to defection clause. “We believe that the verdict is against the spirit of the Constitution and we request the Supreme Court to take up our plea against the verdict.”

Apparently referring to the PTI’s petition challenging amendments to the NAB laws in the apex court, the minister categorically stated that the ruling alliance will not tolerate interference in the legislative affairs of the parliament.

“Legislation is our right and we will make no compromise on this… conspirator Imran is trying to make judiciary controversial. They target judiciary when it announces decision in line with the Constitution,” he added.

PTI Senator Shaukat Tarin on Wednesday said the ongoing wave of inflation and rupee depreciation showed the public had lost faith in the government, as he called for early elections and added that the PTI would cooperate in the formation of an interim setup.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, the former finance minister said: “This inflation and the depreciation of the rupee make it clear the market and the public has lost its trust in you. Your credibility has finished and there is only one solution: announce general elections and bring a credible interim government.

“We, too, will cooperate with an interim government.”

Tarin said the country needed to be taken out of the economic and political “mess” it was in.

The former finance minister criticised how the rupee’s continuous depreciation against the dollar was being managed, decrying that it had been completely abandoned to open-market operations, instead of a regulated rate being maintained by the State Bank.

He said the central bank needed to intervene and devise a mechanism to regulate the exchange rate to some extent, adding that the PTI was also ready to help out and offer advice in this regard.

Tarin also attributed the market’s falling confidence and the rupee’s depreciation to the Punjab by-elections, saying that the business community was predicting a change of government, which would add to further political uncertainty.

Record low

Earlier today, the rupee continued its fall in the interbank market, with the local currency closing at a historic low of Rs225 against the dollar as Ismail said political turmoil was to blame for the downturn.

“The panic in the market is primarily due to political turmoil, which will subside in a few days,” Ismail told Reuters, adding that he expected pressure on the rupee to fall in the next few days.

Analysts attributed the decline to the lack of economic guidance amid the political uncertainty prevailing in the country and the State Bank not intervening.

According to the central bank, the rupee closed at Rs224.92 against the dollar, down Rs2.93 or 1.3 per cent, from yesterday’s close of Rs221.99.

Mettis Global Director Saad bin Naseer said the freefall in the rupee’s value was continuing because the markets were without economic guidance amid the evolving political situation.

ISLAMABAD: PTI Senior Vice President Dr Shireen Mazari Saturday ruled out talks with the rulers until general elections were announced and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) tendered his resignation.

Her statement came against the backdrop of reports about the ‘soft intervention’ in politics by the powerful circles.

She made it clear that PTI expected specific election date and resignation of CEC.

“If they want democracy in the country, they have to talk to PTI being the biggest political force. However, talks cannot be held until the election date is given and CEC resigns, as no one has faith in the current election commissioner,” she claimed.

“The nation is with PTI and Imran Khan, as all the characters of the conspiracy are in great trouble now.

“If the imported government wants stability, it should accept PTI’s demands. We have been deceived many times but now we understand all the issues,” Dr Mazari added.

Reacting to PMLN leader Maryam Nawaz’ tweet, she charged that the convicted from the courts and certified liar Maryam was attacking the courts with support of her corrupt and absconding father.

“This liar lady is roaming free due to the kindness of the courts and is shamefully trying to give dictation to judges. The ‘tabdeeli sarkar’, the ‘objectives’ of American conspiracy and the puppet family’s role stand completely exposed before the nation,” Dr Mazari claimed.

Nawaz Sharif wants early elections
Nawaz Sharif discusses with the senior party leadership the option of quitting government in Centre

LONDON: Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif wants early general elections and has discussed with the senior party leadership the option of quitting the government in the Centre, credible sources have confirmed.

Nawaz Sharif has discussed this several times with top leaders of the party including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and also with the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). He suggested that staying in the government any longer looked set to create more problems than resolving the issues in the absence of genuine support the government should have received from all state organs, said sources.

They said PDM leaders, including Asif Ali Zardari and Maulana Fazlur Rehman, have so far resisted the idea of quitting the government but the Supreme Court’s decision to make Pervaiz Elahi Punjab’s Chief Minister is highly likely to reinforce the idea.

Sources shared that Nawaz Sharif has told his party leaders that obstacles had been created for Shehbaz Sharif’s government from the very start, after Imran Khan’s ouster in a vote of no-confidence, and staying in the government in the absence of powers could damage the party further.

These discussions have lingered on for several weeks but more so after the disappointing results for the PML-N in Punjab’s by-elections and the decision by a three-member Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice Atta Bandial and Justices Ijaz-ul-Ahsan and Muneeb Akhtar, to remove Hamza Shehbaz as Punjab’s chief minister. It had thrown up a completely new scenario for the PML-N where it has power in the Centre but in Punjab, the battleground province, will be now ruled by Pervaiz Elahi with help from Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Sources have confirmed that the likely date and time of October and November have been discussed at a great length and Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and the government stakeholders are aware about the nature of these discussions. These discussions, according to sources, have taken place between the government and the establishment figures as well but nothing was finalised.

The PML-N leadership, according to sources, toyed with the idea of holding early elections but stopped short of making a final decision in this regard, waiting for one event after another to pass by to make further assessments and evaluate.

During the discussions that have taken place, senior party cadres have discussed that Nawaz Sharif and PML-N don’t have a level-playing field even they are in power in the Centre and ruled Punjab in one way or the other for about three months till the elevation of Pervaiz Elahi.

The sources said that senior party leaders have discussed Nawaz Sharif’s return to Pakistan before the next general elections and a message has been conveyed to him that his presence in Pakistan was necessary.

PML-N leaders from Pakistan have sent reports to Nawaz Sharif, blaming the serious issues of inflation and worsening economic situation as the main factors behind the PML-N’s battering in the Punjab by-polls which have proven disastrous for the party.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Thursday urged former prime minister Imran Khan to dissolve assemblies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab — where his party is in power — saying that it was a prerequisite of his demand for general elections.

The minister made the statement at a press conference in Islamabad as he insisted that the PTI chief would “never prefer early polls” and that “he is making such demands only to discredit the government.”

Sanaullah said PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif wanted the country to move towards elections, however, “this man [Imran] is asking for the sacking of chief election commissioner without realising that fact that the CEC cannot be replaced without fulfillment of a required constitutional process.”

“The nomination for the current CEC was proposed by Imran when he was in the government, and now he could only be removed through the consent of judicial council,” he added.

He said the ECP chief could not be sacked on mere threats hurled by Imran.

He asked Imran to dissolve the two assemblies if he was “sincere” in his demand for early polls.

The interior minister demanded the ECP to “immediately announce” the verdict in the foreign funding case, which has been reserved for eight weeks.

Sanaullah claimed the PML-N would “sweep” Punjab if elections were held, saying “we will form our government”.

The minister also blamed the PTI government for the current inflation the country was facing. “They signed an agreement with the IMF and we just implemented it.”

He said the incumbent government only raised the power tariff and did nothing else that added to the country’s soaring inflation.

“The history will tell that we took the right decisions by saving the country from imminent default.”

To a question, Sanaullah said the case of Model Town had already been decided wherein the allegations against his party leaders could not be proved.

And now this.....

Amid calls by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for snap polls in the country, the Pakistan Democratic Alliance (PDM) has reiterated its stance that the general elections will be held on time and the coalition government will complete its tenure.

The announcement was made after the alliance's top brass meeting held in Islamabad on Thursday following the Supreme Court's verdict in the Punjab chief minister case.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) committee has started contacting federal government allies to start negotiations about ousting the incumbent PML-N-led government, ARY News reported.

According to details the Pervaiz Khattak-led PTI committee, formed to negotiate with federal government allies, has contacted Balochistan Natioan Party (BNP), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), and Jamat-e-Islami (JI)., sources said.

A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party source told ARY News that meetings have also been scheduled with the above-mentioned parties in the coming week. All parties have agreed to hold negotiations in the telephonic conversations, it added.

Awami Muslim League (AML) chief and former interior minister Sheikh Rashid said on Friday that matters with regards to snap polls have been settled.

“Instead of by-elections, matters on new elections have been settled,” he tweeted.

“The nation will soon hear about the date for elections in October, formation of a new election commission and a caretaker government.”

In an apparent reference to PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, who has contracted Covid-19, Rashid said: “Even those in quarantine have agreed to elections. Only [JUI-F chief] Maulana Fazlur Rehman is left.”

Rashid further highlighted that the hike in dollar rates and increase in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and electricity prices would “shut down markets”.

“The political reputation of the allies has turned to ashes,” he went on to say. “Democracy has become a joke and the assembly a spectacle.”

The AML leader’s statement comes a day after Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah urged PTI chief Imran Khan to dissolve assemblies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab — where his party is in power — saying that it was a prerequisite of his demand for general elections.

At a press conference on Thursday, he had said that his party’s supremo, Nawaz Sharif, also wanted the country to move towards elections, however, “this man [Imran] is asking for the sacking of chief election commissioner without realising that fact that the CEC cannot be replaced without fulfillment of a required constitutional process.”

Sanaullah also claimed the PML-N would “sweep” Punjab if elections were held, saying “we will form our government”.

At the same time, the ruling coalition also reiterated on Thursday that it would complete its constitutional term.

“The government will complete its term and the next general elections will be held on time,” PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said at a joint press conference with PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, after a meeting of the alliance.

Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Sunday said the government’s decision to complete its tenure and hold general elections on time had PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s blessing.

Addressing a press conference in Peshawar, the PDM chief was questioned about reports of a split in the alliance’s opinion over completing the government’s tenure in wake of the recent Punjab by-poll loss to the PTI.

“Nawaz Sharif was present when the last decision was being formulated … and he was involved until the last word of the decision that was taken with his agreement, which we put in front of the public.

“What was in that decision? That the government would complete its tenure and the elections would be held on time,” Rehman said.

He said once a decision was taken and then opinions diverged then the majority’s decision in the alliance would prevail. Rehman criticised sensationalism regarding the reported difference of opinion within the PDM and said there was no conflict.

Rehman subsequently criticised the PTI and said it was not easy for the government to rescue the country from its economic decisions and agreements.

“I say that if the government had not been taken away from them, then today the country would have been in pieces.”

The PDM chief said every person should understand the sensitivity of the challenge the current government had accepted by coming to power and called on the people to not vote again for the PTI.

“Voting for the PTI is [akin to] becoming a participant in the country’s destruction and this has no other meaning.”

Regarding by-elections after the resignations of several PTI MNAs were accepted, Rehman said the coalition government had decided to field the respective runner-ups of the 2018 general elections in the constituencies that were now up for grabs.

The PDM chief also highlighted security issues and issues of law and order in the tribal areas and said he would raise these concerns with the prime minister. He criticised the establishment for the merger of the tribal areas and said their situation had only worsened instead of improving.

While directing members of assemblies to prepare for the snap polls, former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan has said that the coalition government could go for general elections in the next six to eight weeks.

He said this while talking to PTI members of parliament in Lahore on Sunday. Imran tasked former Punjab health minister Dr Yasmin Rashid to complete the PTI's organisational structure in the province within two weeks.

He said that the law will take its course against those who violated privacy on May 25. "I know the people who deceived us, but I don't want to name anyone in front of everyone," he added.

Later, Imran met PTI leader Dr Yasmin, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Mian Aslam Iqbal and Raja Basharat separately. He lauded the efforts of party workers for the election of Punjab chief minister and Punjab Assembly speaker.

The PTI chief also lauded the performance of members of parliament from the Lahore and the Gujranwala division.

On the occasion, he said that stability in the country is only possible via fair and transparent elections. "People come into politics for money but now masses have become aware... people have expectations from the PTI."

On Wednesday, the ousted prime minister, in his televised address to the nation, reiterated that early elections under a new election commissioner are the only way out of the deepening economic and political crises in the country.

He also said that the Pakistani masses “have turned into a nation”, adding that the way the PTI emerged successful despite all “tactics” by the ruling party was a miracle.

The PTI chief insisted that the country had the right economic indicators when he was in power and he had warned the “powerful quarters” about it.

“We were on a fast pace on the agricultural front with all four bumper crops witnessing progress,” he said, adding, “The way we tackled the situation during the Covid-19 pandemic was also admired by the international organisations.”

Backdoor talks have begun for holding early elections in Pakistan with differences between PTI Chairman Imran Khan and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif over the date for the polls, ARY NEWS reported.

According to sources privy to the backdoor discussions, Imran Khan wanted the general elections to be held in October and November, contrary to Nawaz Sharif who want polls in March or April 2023.

“Ishaq Dar is facilitating talks with Nawaz Sharif,” they said.

The sources said that there is a deadlock from Imran Khan over removal of CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja. “The PTI and PML-N are, however, on the same page over holding polls simultaneously in Centre and provinces,” they said.

Awami Muslim League Chief Sheikh Rasheed said on Friday that PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has agreed to hold general elections in October.

The AML chief tweeted, saying that rather than by-polls the date for general elections has been decided. Polls would be held in October under a new election commission, while an interim government would be set up soon, he claimed.

Hinting at Asif Ali Zardari he added that people in ‘quarantine’ have also agreed to hold general elections, only Fazlur Reham is left to pursue.

Sources from to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday said that the commission is "prepared" to conduct general elections by October.

They said that the ECP has completed the work of delimitation of constituencies and eliminated any objections regarding them. “Work has been completed in all constituencies for all national and provincial seats,” the sources added.

Earlier the commission had assured the Supreme Court that it would complete constituencies' delimitations by August 4 (today).

According to the sources, the ECP will publish the voter and constituencies list by the end of this month.

General elections ‘on time’

Last week, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) -- which mostly comprises political parties in the ruling coalition, including the PML-N -- declared that the next general elections would be held on its scheduled time next year.

“The general elections will be held on time and the current government will complete its term,” said PDM President Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

On the other hand, PTI chief Imran Khan emphasised that the only way to end the current political crisis in the country was to hold immediate clean and transparent elections.

"There is only one way [to rid the country of political instability] … free and fair election. When they were removing me, I had announced general elections, but courts overturned my decision. I still believe it was the right call," the former premier had said.

PTI to give assembly dissolution deadline in Islamabad rally: Fawad
It is not possible that the Election Commission will conduct transparent elections, says Fawad Hussain

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Senior Vice President Chaudhry Fawad Hussain Friday said that in a few days, the party would hold a big public meeting in the federal capital and give the government a deadline to dissolve the National Assembly and announce elections in one-month time.

He told a news conference that in the next 48 hours, the date for the proposed public meeting would be announced. “Giving more time to the rulers will destroy the economy of the country,” he added.

He was briefing the media about the decisions taken during the PTI political committee meeting, presided over by the party Chairman Imran Khan. Fawad said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was taking action against Imran Khan and Tehreek-e-Insaf very quickly. He reiterated the PTI demand for resignation of the chief election commissioner and ECP members. He contended that they had no faith whatsoever in the present Election Commission.

“It is not possible that the Election Commission will conduct transparent elections. That is why the change of Election Commission is inevitable; the only way out for political and economic stability is the general election,” he claimed.

He said a drone attack took place inside Afghanistan and Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in it. “Was Pakistan’s airspace used for drone strikes or not? The Foreign Office should clarify Pakistan’s position in this regard,” he demanded.

Pakistan, he noted, has already paid a very heavy price; if Pakistan’s help is involved in the attack, relations with Afghanistan may deteriorate again and every Pakistani is concerned about it.

Fawad alleged the Election Commission did not even care about the courts and the law, and it was hand in glove with the N-League. He added that Qasim Suri had accepted all the resignations and resignations of parliamentarians could not be accepted in parts.

“We sincerely hope that we will get justice from the Islamabad High Court. The next phase of our struggle has started,” he said. “Shehbaz Sharif should announce the election date and invite all political parties after that. The Election Commission is all fraud from top to bottom. The PDM government is causing severe damage to the country’s economy every day,” he alleged.

Stepping up its preparations for the next general polls, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has directed its officials to prepare the lists of polling staff and stations.

It has also sought the proposed lists of staff from the provincial election commissioners.

According to sources, the commission has decided to train the election staff on modern lines for the upcoming general polls.

For this purpose, the four provincial election commissioners have been asked to prepare staff lists and send them to the ECP.

Instead of traditional methods, the election staff will be trained on modern lines.

They will be made aware of the electoral provisions included in the Constitution.

The sources said that the commission had instructed the authorities that the polling stations should not be far from the voters.

The ECP will appoint returning officers (ROs) and district returning officers (DROs) near the time of the elections.

The ROs and DROs will be drawn from the judiciary or the administration.

The ECP has directed that there should be no delay in the preparations for the general elections.

Earlier this month, the ECP had published the final list of 266 constituencies of the National Assembly and 593 constituencies of the four provincial assemblies for the next general elections, based on the Sixth Population and Housing Census, 2017.

The process of delimitation of the constituencies had been completed in nearly four months. In June, the ECP had invited public objections and suggestions regarding the delimitation. In July, the polls supervisor disposed of 910 objections, and published the final list.

“The final list of constituencies is hereby published for information of the general public in accordance with the provisions of Section 21 of the Elections Act, 2017 read with Rule 14 of the Elections Rules, 2017,” the ECP had said in its notification.

In the new delimitation the number of general seats of the National Assembly has been reduced from 272 in the present assembly to 266. The reduction of six seats came in accordance with the 25th Constitutional Amendment, following the merger of erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the notification, 859 general seats – 266 of the National Assembly and 593 of the four provincial assemblies – had been created for the next general elections.

Sources within the ECP had said earlier this month that the commission was “prepared” to conduct general elections by October.

They had added that the commission had completed the work of delimitation of constituencies and eliminated any objections regarding them.

ECP puts off by-elections in 13 NA, PA constituencies

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday postponed the by-polls in 13 constituencies of the National Assembly and provincial legislatures of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, owing to the engagements of security personnel and other departments’ flood-related rescue and relief activities. Another major reason for this development has been the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, wherein security personnel were attacked and some of them lost their lives.

The Election Commission met here with Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja in the chair to take stock of the situation about holding the electoral exercises while the nation was dealing with the national emergency caused by floods. The meeting decided to postpone the by-elections, which were due in 10 NA and three provincial assemblies’ constituencies.

The election was previously scheduled to be held on Sept 11 in NA-157 Multan IV, PP-139 Sheikhupura V, PP-241 Bahawalnagar V. Besides, nine NA constituencies, where polling was fixed for September 25 included NA 22 Mardan III, NA 24 Charsadda II, NA 31 Peshawar V, NA 45 Kurram I, NA 108 Faisalabad VIII, NA 118 Nankana Sahib II, NA 237 Malir II, NA 239 Korangi, Karachi I, NA 246 Karachi, South I. Election was also scheduled for PP 209 Khanewal VII on Oct 2.

The Election Commission was briefed by the commission’s secretary, who said that due to the recent devastating rains and floods in Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southern Punjab, the means of transportation have been disrupted, buildings destroyed, transportation disrupted and a situation of national emergency has arisen. All the national institutions including police, Pakistan Army, Rangers and the Frontier Constabulary, besides the administrative officers meant to be deployed on election duty, are engaged in providing food, settlement of flood victims to safe places and conducting necessary relief operations due to the outbreak of epidemics.

It may be recalled that on August 23, 2022, the ECP had sought the services of Pakistan Army and Rangers to ensure peaceful elections and the Interior Ministry had not assured of their deployment due to the national emergency. The Interior Ministry in its feedback had said that Pakistan Army, Rangers and FC are engaged in flood relief operations, internal security and prevention of terrorist activities. Similarly, the military authorities also referred to the national emergency (flood), due to which the prime minister has also set up a National Fund and appealed for international assistance so that this national tragedy can be dealt with.

The ECP secretary told the forum that the law and order situation is tense in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where law-enforcement agencies have been attacked in recent days, resulting in the loss of precious lives. Because of this scenario, it is difficult to withdraw the security personnel from relief operations and make them available for holding peaceful elections. The provincial election commissioners of Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab had also termed it impossible to hold the by-elections in the current situation and said that flood victims have been housed in various government buildings earlier designated as polling stations.

Meanwhile, PTI Vice President Fawad Hussain Chaudhry said that as per the last news, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the foreign minister of this government and his government has requested the ECP to postpone the by-elections and the desire has been fulfilled. “However, your statement showing concern over the by-polls postponement shows that it is either a fraud or you have no say in the government.” He said, “It seems that government has run away from by-polls.”

General polls in 2023, Marriyum tells Imran
Minister says PTI chief’s real face as ‘foreign agent’ exposed

ISLAMABAD:
Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Sunday, in response to PTI chairman and deposed premier Imran Khan’s call for early elections, insisted that the general polls would take place in 2023.

In a news statement, the minister said it seemed that the PTI chief's ears were not open. She added that Imran should open his ears and listen: the general elections would be held in 2023.

She ridiculed Imran's "call" for protests. She added that the people did not pay heed to those who ridiculed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and hurled threats at the judiciary.

She claimed that people were already on the streets because of the recent floods. “You have become blind and deaf. Elections are not held by force, crying, shouting and beating,” she maintained.

The minister said while the country was flooded, the PTI chairman could not see all this because he was immersed in his “poisonous ego”.

Marriyum maintained that the former premier had become accustomed to being a “favourite” and have his way.

“Change your [PTI chief] habit as the time has changed. If you take the law in hand, the law will move, then you will shout and cry,” she added.

The minister said the only problem was that the “real face” of Imran had come before the public.

She added that the whole reality of the PTI chief and his family’s “robbery" had been exposed.

Marriyum claimed that the public had come to know about Imran being a foreign agent and using charity money for personal expenses.

The minister castigated the PTI chairman for abandoning his people midway of a protest which he had announced himself.

She further claimed that Imran was bent on creating chaos and anarchy instead of joining the whole nation in flood relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Marriyum alleged that Imran again wanted to reinstall a corrupt model of governance in the country by imposing people including Usman Buzdar, Farah Gogi and Bushra Bibi.

The minister claimed that Imran, who had announced the so-called real freedom movement, had hired the services of a former CIA chief for improving his image in the US.

Marriyum said the government would complete its constitutional term and general elections would be held in time, adding that Imran’s whining and shrieking would not make any difference.

PTI chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan, in an address to the nation on Thursday, renewed his demand for snap polls as he warned that PTI’s patience was wearing thin.

“If we want to save the country from discord and chaos, free and fair elections need to be announced immediately,” he said.

At the beginning of his address, which was broadcast live on PTI’s social media accounts, Imran said that he had decided to talk to the nation today as he feared the government had no way to prevent the economy from collapsing.

“The second fear I have is that unless political stability arrives [to the country], there can be no economic stability,” he highlighted.

“The incumbent government does not have any credibility, both inside and outside Pakistan, especially in the financial markets,” the ex-premier alleged.

Imran said that the coalition government, when it first came to power, had claimed that economic stability would come once the International Monetary Funds programme was finalised. “But the conditions today are in front of the people.

“They agreed to all the IMF conditions and then came the historic inflation […] Pakistan has never seen inflation like this in its history […] the rupee is still depreciating and will continue to fall, until political stability arrives,” he pointed out.

The PTI chairman then said that the only way out of these crises was free and fair elections, asserting that delaying the polls would only lead to losses for the country.

“If anyone thinks that we [PTI] are facing a loss because of delayed elections, I can claim, that never in Pakistan’s history did a political party have popularity as much as PTI did. If there is one federal party that can unite Pakistan, it is PTI.”

He said that “big criminals” sitting atop Pakistan had realised that PTI’s popularity could not be confronted.

Debunking the government’s claims that PTI left behind “landmines”, Imran recalled that when his party came to power in 2018, the country’s current account deficit was at $20 billion.

“We brought more dollars into the country and reduced our deficit, but propaganda is done again and again,” he said.

Criticising the government’s response to floods, the PTI chief alleged that the coalition allies did not have any road map or plan for rehabilitation. “We can only see them begging the world for money.”

Going on, he said that the prices of fuel and electricity across Pakistan were reaching their all-time high and warned that they would further increase in the near future.

Unemployment is increasing, inflation is rising, and businesses are closing down, Imran said. “The danger I am seeing right now […] Our credit rating has fallen to negative […] do you know what this means? They think Pakistan doesn’t have the ability to repay and due to this, the cost of loans will increase.”

He recalled that before the no-confidence movement, he had warned the “powerful people” that the not-trust vote would directly impact the economy.

“Our risk rating was 5pc on March 4 and as soon as they tabled the vote of no-confidence, in four days it went to 9pc.”

Hence, the PTI chief reiterated, fresh polls should be announced immediately. “If political stability doesn’t come, the economy won’t stabilise, it will go down. So I want to tell my people today that we need to have elections quickly to save Pakistan from this swamp.”

Referring to the government, Imran said that its “fascist tactics” won’t last long, adding that it was only damaging the country.

“Our patience won’t last long if you continue like this, we will have to give a call to the nation,” he concluded.

Fazl, Nawaz, Zardari reject Imran’s call for snap polls
The government allies expressed concern over granting relief to Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) leaders Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif on Friday had a telephone contact to discuss political situation in the country.

The PDM leaders rejected PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s demand for immediate general elections and made it clear that the ruling alliance would go to general elections next year after economic stability and rehabilitation of the flood affected people.

They declared election date will not be given due to Imran Khan’s long march. They said that scale of justice should be equal for all. PDM head Maulana Fazlur Rehman telephone PMLN supremo Nawaz Sharif and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Zardari. The three leaders exchanged view on the prevailing political and economic situation of the country. Sources said the three leaders discussed the strategy to counter Imran Khan’s new protest call.

The government allies expressed concern over granting relief to Imran Khan and company despite evidence of their involvement in different cases and they agreed that the criterion of justice should be equal for all. There should be no personal likes and dislikes therein.

The sources disclosed that ruling alliance will take decisions with mutual consultation in the perspective of flood and economic situation. Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the secret hands to whom Imran Khan is darling should be exposed. Asif Zardari will hold important contacts and meetings in the backdrop of political situation. The PDM leaders agreed that providing relief to people is must in day to day growing inflation.

Former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan said on Sunday that holding immediate elections was not just crucial for his party but for the entire country “as revolution is knocking at our door”.

In a meeting with the members of Punjab cabinet, the former premier said peaceful transition of power should take place through free and transparent elections. “The revolution should come through peaceful polls,” he was quoted as saying in the meeting.

Imran said that the people are with the PTI and emphasised the need for holding immediate elections, saying it was need of the hour for the country.

During the meeting, he also congratulated the Punjab cabinet members on PTI’s thumping victory in the recently-held by-elections.

Addressing the participants, Imran said that the success in the Punjab by-elections was an expression of public confidence in his party.

He also urged the party members to fully support Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi, calling him a “practical politician”.

Imran said that people in Punjab were looking towards the PTI to achieve “real freedom” for them. “Punjab cabinet and parliamentary party should stand with the people on the stance of real freedom,” he added.

A day earlier, the former prime minister warned the ‘imported government and its backers’ to hold the early and transparent elections to let the change come through the power of the vote, warning that the situation would get out of control if polls were delayed any further.

“If you stop this ‘peaceful revolution’ then as World Bank has predicted the game [situation] would get out of everyone’s hand. Let the change come through vote,” he said on Saturday while addressing a public gathering in Charsadda.

Imran while addressing the coalition government and its ‘backers’ had said, “No matter what you do you cannot win this match you have already lost this match… economy is sinking fast and the world is not willing to give them [government] financial aid for flood victims.”

The PTI chairman said there is still time to steer the country out of a quagmire by holding free and fair elections, adding that “the time is not far when he gives a call to the nation to achieve real freedom”.

Pakistan Mus*lim League (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Tuesday called upon the government and the opposition to shun their differences and sit together to chalk out a strategy to address the economic crisis faced by Pakistan.

Talking to Dawn, the veteran politician disagreed with former prime minister Imran Khan’s demand for immediate elections, saying snap polls were not a solution to the economic woes.

In another suggestion, Mr Hussain proposed that in case someone disagreed over who would chair the joint dialogue, then the meeting should be chaired by figures from all camps on a rotational basis.

“If somebody still thinks that snap elections are the solution to the challenges of poverty and poor economy, then elections should be called within one week,” Mr Hussain said while referring to his proposal seeking a grand dialogue.

President Arif Alvi has called upon political parties to sit together and take steps to end political polarisation in the country saying that only free and fair elections can bring stability to the country.

He said this while addressing a joint session of parliament in which he touched upon a range of issues including devastating floods, foreign policy, and political and economic instability among others.

“There is an urgent need for ending political polarisation in the country. Politicians should sit together and take steps to end polarisation,” he remarked.

Alvi also emphasised the need for using electronic voting machines (EVMs) to ensure transparency in the elections.

“How will stability come when a losing party or candidate hurl rigging allegations? Progress should be made on this matter [EVM] instead of lingering it on,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of remittances, President Alvi called for giving overseas Pakistanis right to vote through EVM.

He urged the political parties to hold a dialogue to decide the election date. “If there is a difference of only a few months then [all parties] should sit together and decide the election date.”

The president said he could only give his opinion to his “friends” on the matter of holding elections, asserting that ending the polarisation is the need of the hour.

Foreign policy

Speaking about foreign policy, President Alvi appreciated the government’s efforts to improve ties with US and European countries.

“Pakistan-America ties are improving and they will continue to improve. We should maintain ties on the basis of mutual understanding. I appreciate the government’s efforts in this regard.”

Maintaining ties with the West, the president said, is vital for the country’s economy as Pakistan’s top export destinations are the US and Europe.

Hailing Pakistan-China ties, Alvi said CPEC is a testament to strong ties between the two countries.

He also thanked Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for extending economic support to Pakistan, saying both countries have always helped Pakistan during difficult times.

He went on to say that Pakistan wanted peace in Afghanistan and hope that the interim Taliban government would fulfil its international obligations and would not let its territory be used against any country.

“We hope that there should be no mutual interference in the internal matters.”

The president called for resolving the Kashmir dispute in line with the UN resolutions and expressed concerns over the Hindutva policies of the Modi-led government.

“Hindutva is increasing hatred against the Muslim and exporting Islamophobia to other parts of the world.”

NAB amendments

Avli said the country has not taken enough measures to end the menace of corruption.

Without referring to the NAB amendments, the president said to the onus of explaining sources of wealth lies with the accused.

“There is a need to strengthen NAB but at the same time we have to ensure that it must not be used as a political tool for victimisation”.

Economic stability

The president termed the agreement with the IMF ‘appropriate’, saying that the deal enabled the country to avail funding from other global lenders.

He also emphasised the need for long-term economic policies, saying that policy continuation is essential to maintain economic stability and build investors’ confidence.

“Policies should continue despite the change of government to protect foreign investment,” he added

He also expressed hope that dollar-rupee parity will be brought under control.

At the start of his address, Alvi stressed the need for the construction of dams to avert devastating floods in the country, saying this will also help store water for use in difficult times.

He appreciated the federal and provincial governments, NDMA, PDMAs and the armed forces for their timely response to the flood relief activities.

He expressed satisfaction over the international focus on the floods in Pakistan, saying the UN Secretary-General visited Pakistan to see the ground situation.

Referring to the losses inflicted by floods on the agriculture sector, the president suggested a crop insurance scheme for the farmers to compensate for their losses.

The president said a special focus should be given to bring improvement in the health and education sectors.

Referring to the importance of the cyber world, he said that we need to improve our policies in this regard to ensure the cyber security of important institutions.

The president was appreciative of the initiative taken by the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to deal with the issue of malnutrition.

General elections after 11 months: PM Shehbaz Sharif
Shehbaz Sharif said that general elections were still 11 months away, and the coalition government had no intention of holding early polls

LAHORE: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Saturday said that general elections were still 11 months away, and the coalition government had no intention of holding early polls.

Addressing a press conference here, he said, “We will work hard for 11 months and elections will be held on time.”

Shehbaz said Imran Niazi, who used to call every opponent a daku [dacoit] had himself proved to be a certified thief and a liar in the Toshakhana case. He said there was no threat to democracy in the country and there was nothing to fear about Pakistan. “The law will take its own course during the [PTI] long march, and the government will not allow the certified thief to enter Islamabad,” he warned.

“During the long march, the real question is whether people will go along a certified thief,” he said.

In Panama vs. Iqama, Shehbaz recalled, when the decision came about Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan used to say that if such a decision would have come about him, he would have left politics and everything. Now, as a result of his corrupt practices, a decision had come against Imran Khan, who was brought to power by massive rigging in 2018.

“After coming to power, Imran sold buffaloes for Rs23 lakh in the name of austerity. He used to say that when electricity and petrol prices go up, that means the prime minister of the country was a thief,” Shehbaz said while recalling the statements of Imran Khan.

Shehbaz said Imran sold out gifts of friendly countries and put money in his pocket. “If he would have sold the gifts and deposited the money in the national exchequer, I would also have appreciated him.” He sold out a gift, a wristwatch, in Dubai, which was worth Rs14-15 crore. He sold it to the same shopkeeper, who [had manufactured it on the orders of an Arab prince.] The shopkeeper informed the prince that the watch had not been stolen but it had reached him for sale. He said Imran Khan did everything to bring disrespect to the country.

The PM said that Pakistan had come out of the grey list. “I congratulate the entire nation from core of my heart. Many problems will be solved after getting out of the list. Pakistan has followed the recommendations of FATF and it admitted that Pakistan has implemented 35 conditions,” the PM said and added that Allah blessed Pakistan with success, which was not his but a collective success of Pakistan.

Shehbaz said Pakistan had sacrificed a lot in the war against terrorism; it was the success of all individuals, institutions, authorities who worked day and night. He also expressed special thanks and congratulated Bilawal Bhutto. Continuing his speech, the PM said Bilawal Bhutto, along with Hina Rabbani Khar, played an important role in this regard. He said the allied parties provided full support, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and his team also played a great role.

The PM said it was a national issue, the fate of 22 crore people was tied to it. Earlier, despite being in the opposition, “we extended full support in making laws in the Senate and the National Assembly and even faced taunts at that time with great patience”. He said Pakistan was not in the grey list during the Nawaz Sharif government.

Answering a question, the PM said the appointment of the army chief was discretion of the sitting government under the Constitution. It was a constitutional matter and the appointment would be made after looking at the names given in the panel.

The prime minister said that the coalition government had done nothing wrong at all but, he regretted, Imran Niazi was making wicked attempts to create instability in the country.

Shehbaz said Imran Niazi, while sitting in the Prime Minister’s House, only talked about democracy, but acted as a fascist. He claimed that Imran Niazi was not worried about meeting the quorum during the FATF legislation, and he did nothing for bringing the country out of the grey list.

On the issue of flood victims, the premier said: “Winter has started and the flood victims are facing difficulties. We have to give blankets and food to the victims before start of winter.”

The prime minister said that all these problems would be solved by working together and not by staging rallies and sit-ins. Shehbaz regretted that nothing had been done by the Imran Khan government in the country except for spreading lies and rumours.

He said today Imran Niazi was speaking against the chief election commissioner, but earlier he termed him a very honest man and even the name of chief election commissioner was proposed by Imran Niazi.

The PM said that British National Crime Agency (NCA) conducted an investigation against him for two years and finally they said in the London court that they did not find anything wrong. He said the British agency declared him clear, his daughters were dragged to the courts, his two daughters were not related to any case. Zardari’s sister was also dragged to courts and false and fake cases were made against other opposition members by Imran Niazi.

He said Imran’s sister was given an ‘NRO’ by the FBR; Aleema Khan did not declare her assets for many years. “I used to say that there was NAB-Niazi nexus. A woman was kept locked in the Prime Minister’s House, the NAB chairman was blackmailed,” he added.

“Imran Niazi is the embodiment of lies, dishonesty. While Bani Gala was regularised, the houses of the poor were demolished,” he said adding when he talked about the Charter of Economy, in return he was called a robber and a thief.

Replying to a question about allegations of the Punjab chief minister that the federal government was not allowing Punjab to import wheat, he said wheat was produced not imported. He said the government could not allow the private sector to import wheat. He said “we saved billions of rupees in wheat import.

“You do not mention the savings in wheat, we were taking steps to reduce inflation and not like Imran Niazi we surround people’s houses,” he told the media in reply to a question. He said since arrival of Ishaq Dar in the country, dollar went down by 10 to 12 rupees.

About the return of former PM Nawaz Sharif’s to Pakistan, he said if Allah wills, Nawaz Sharif would definitely come back and he would go to the airport to receive him.

Shehbaz Sharif said he was ready to go to every door for betterment of the future generations, and there was only one condition for it that there should be no deception on the other end.

To a question, the premier said the coalition government was formed six months ago. During this period, fuel adjustment charges had been waived for people using up to 300 units of electricity. He said he was also asking friendly countries for gas and questioned why the certified thief did not bring cheap gas for the nation.

About Pak-India relations, he replied that he fully agreed to the idea of restoring Pakistan-India relations. But firstly, India would have to resolve the Kashmir and other issues.

Replying to a question about backdoor contacts with the PTI, Shehbaz parried the question by telling the journalist to meet him at the backdoor then he would tell him.

They are terrified of elections. They are totally reliant on Bajwa and have no support. Even if they rig on massive scale they will still lose, and if their is fair elections IK takes 75% of the seats.

LAHORE: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Saturday said that general elections were still 11 months away, and the coalition government had no intention of holding early polls.

Addressing a press conference here, he said, “We will work hard for 11 months and elections will be held on time.”

They have at max 10 months, not 11. PDM cant go past August 2023.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan reiterated that the only demand he has been raising since the past six months is to announce an early date for free and fair general elections in the country, ARY News reported on Saturday.

“The only way forward from here is to hold early fair [and] free elections,” said PTI chairman in a meeting with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan.

PTI chairman and deposed premier Imran Khan on Tuesday maintained that only early elections could avert the country’s looming “economic collapse”.

He warned that Pakistan was heading towards a default, pointing out that the risk of that happening had increased to 64.5%.

“The question is who is responsible for this economic meltdown,” the former prime minister said while addressing a rally.

The PTI chief was referring to Pakistan’s risk of default, measured through the five-year currency default swap (CDS) index, which had spiked by 4.2% to a new high of 64.5%.

“When our government was removed through a regime change conspiracy in April [this year], the risk of Pakistan taking loans from abroad was less than 5% and today it has climbed to 64.5%,” the PTI chief noted.

“This means that our country lacks the resources to meet the growing import payments and foreign debt repayments on time,” he added.

Interestingly, the PTI chief did not mention the impact of the recent devastating floods in various parts of the country.

He said the new figures suggested that there was a high chance that Pakistan would not be able to repay its debts. “[This] indicates that the present government has destabilised the economy,” he claimed.

“In this gloomy environment, foreign investors will shy away from investing in Pakistan and no one will be prepared to give us more loans,” he added.

He blamed the Sharif and Zardari families for the “massive” loans taken during their tenures.

However, the country’s total debt and liabilities jumped to Rs53.5 trillion – an addition of Rs23.7 trillion under the government of Imran, who failed to meet his promise of bringing down by half the debt pile left behind his arch-rival -- the PML-N.
The increase in public debt alone, which is the direct responsibility of the government, was Rs19.5 trillion, as it swelled to Rs44.4 trillion by March 2022.

At the rally, the PTI chief feared that the rupee would further devalue if the country hit a default, adding to the woes of the people. “They [the people] are already facing unprecedented inflation that has climbed to 27% from 16% at the time when we left the government,” he added.

Imran castigated the current government for “murdering” Pakistan’s economy in the last seven months.

He asked the “handlers” of the incumbent government about who was responsible for the economic meltdown in the country.

The PTI chief reiterated that when his party was ousted from power, the country’s economy was growing and as per the Economic Survey (2021-22) published by the current government, all the sectors were showing "huge growth".

“When Pakistan was progressing on all economic fronts, then what was the logic behind removing our government?’ he questioned.

He claimed that six months back, he had warned the “handlers” that the conspiracy to bring the PML-N into power would prove detrimental for the company.

He maintained that if Pakistan defaulted on its loans, it would not affect Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his company.

“Only national security will be compromised,” he added.

“If the people still think that the present government can solve the economic issues then I ask them who brought Pakistan to this stage in the first place,” he said.

“The only solution to the economic crisis in the country is free and fair elections,” he claimed, without elaborating about his claim.

The former premier also alleged that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif wanted to appoint a new army chief of his ‘liking’.

“He [Nawaz] wants the new army chief to disqualify me from national politics.
He again repeated how a convict (referring to Nawaz) could make decisions on sensitive matters about Pakistan’s national security.

Imran castigated the incumbent government for consulting Nawaz over the appointment of the new chief of army staff (COAS).

He claimed that Nawaz was not capable of making decisions on merit, as the PML-N chief always gave "preference to his personal interests over those of the country”.

Separately while addressing the participants of the PTI's “Haqeeqi Azadi March” simultaneously in Sarai Alamgir, Chiniot, and Swabi via video link from Lahore, Imran again alleged that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was working on an agenda against his party.

"Not only is it [ECP) close to the PML-N, but also its handlers," he added.

He claimed that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja had passed decisions against his party eight times and all of them were rejected by the judiciary.

The PTI chief termed the lack of justice as the root cause of all the country’s ills. He urged Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial to deliver justice.

Imran underscored that real independence came through the rule of law and justice. “All issues in Pakistan are linked to the justice system in the country. The law of jungle has turned the people into slaves,” he maintained.

“I once again humbly request you [CJP] that these three cases -- the assassination of renowned journalist Arshad Sharif, the custodial torture of Senator Azam Swati, and the registration of the FIR of the Wazirabad attack are of landmark significance,” he said.

“Mr chief justice, we are looking towards you because we do not have hope from anywhere else. It is high time that the courts became assertive and stood with the people of Pakistan,” he added.

Pakistan takes "General" elections way too literally.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has completed its preparations for the next general elections, AYR News reported on Saturday, citing sources.

According to details, the electoral watchdog completed its preparations for the next general elections and acquired non-sensitive material and papers for ballot papers.

Sources told ARY News that printing of material was being carried out while delimitations of constituencies have been completed. The ECP has also updated the electoral lists and prepared the data of polling staff, sources claimed.

Sources also claimed that data regarding polling stations has also been prepared, adding that preparation of election staff training has also completed. “Lists of returning officers (Ros) and Deputy ROs have also been prepared,” they added.

However, the appointments of ROs and DROs will be announced before the elections. The ECP has also prepared Plan A and Plan B for the polls. The ECP has summoned an important meeting related to general elections on November 22.

All provincial election commissioners and wings have been summoned to the meeting. The participants of the meeting would be apprised of the preparations. Informed sources in the electoral watchdog said that the body was fully prepared for the polls.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Election commission of Pakistan (ECP) decided to accelerate preparations for the next general elections.

According to details, the election commission has asked the provincial government to submit lists of officers from grade 17 and above.

The ECP sent letters to the chief secretaries of four provinces and sought a list of officers who have good credentials and deserves to be nominated as returning officers for the next general elections.

ECP wants Rs18b for emergency needs
Monetary issues hampering commission’s effort to prepare for next general elections

ISLAMABAD:
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has immediately requested Rs18 billion from the government as it was facing difficulties for the upcoming general elections in terms of funds.

The budget of the commission is pending in the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet.

The preparations for the upcoming general elections have entered their final stages.

According to sources, the commission has sent its revised demand for funds to the government.

The ECP has asked for Rs18 billion for pre-election preparations, but its budget is still pending in the ECC.

The commission is facing difficulties in preparing for the elections because of the pending funds.

Sources said that the ECP had sent its demand to the finance ministry and ECC.

The commission has told them that it should be provided with Rs18 billion in a few weeks for the purchase of election material.

The ECP has demanded Rs47 billion from the government for the next general elections.

Of this amount, Rs27 billion will be received in the current financial year.

The commission will receive the remaining Rs20 billion in the next fiscal year.

The procurement of material for the elections is under way while the process of the delimitation of the new constituencies has also been completed.

The electoral lists have been updated and the information about polling staff has been prepared.

The data on how many polling stations will be required as well as where they will be located has also been compiled.

The sources said the preparation for training of election staff has also been completed.

A strategy for the use of the Results Management System (RMS) has been chalked out too.

The RMS is a computer application installed at the office of the returning officer (RO). The system is an electronic form-based software where data entry operators (DEOs), reporting to the RO can enter data like names of candidates, number of registered voters, name and number of polling station, number of votes cast to each candidate and can quickly generate draft forms that used to take hours to fill by hand in the past.

The DEOs are highly trained staff who serve as support to the ROs. The RO requests the DEO to enter data into forms, and generate more forms out of it (for example, Form 45 data is entered, and draft Form 47 may be generated for the RO).

The consolidated forms are then scanned back into RMS, then transmitted to ECP or provincial election commission's headquarters.

Subsequently, they are published on the commission's website.

According to ECP sources, the list of ROs and their deputies as well as their data have also been completed.

ECP SEEKS RS47 BLN FOR ORGANISING GENERAL ELECTIONS

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) sought funds worth Rs47 billion for the organisation of general elections, ARY News reported.

The election commission will be given Rs27 billion in the current fiscal year, whereas, the ECP sought immediate disbursement of Rs18 billion for commencing the preparations for the general elections.

The federal government will disburse over Rs20 billion to the ECP in the next fiscal year. The overall expenditures of the 2018 general polls were Rs31 billion.

Sources said that the federal government approved the budget for the next general polls.

Earlier on November 29, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet had approved a technical grant to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for general elections.

According to details, the ECC – chaired by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar –approved a technical grant to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for general elections.

According to the summary, the ECP requested that the rationalised amount of Rs47.42bn be approved upfront and be released in two phases — Rs31.42 billion during the current fiscal year and another Rs16 billion during the next fiscal (2023-24).

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is reportedly willing to negotiate with the incumbent federal government regarding the next electoral framework despite the party’s decision to dissolve the Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa assemblies.

A senior leader of the PTI told The Express Tribune that the PTI was willing to talk with the federal government regarding the next election. However, he claimed that the primary issue was the “worsening economic situation” in the country.

“Our economic team has conveyed to the leadership that the country would default if elections were held in the month of November. Then we, in power, would not be in a position to control the situation,” he stated.

The PTI leader maintained that the party leaders may be ready to accept elections in August or September if the government shared an economic plan.

“Principally we agree that all national and provincial assemblies’ elections should be held on one date,” says PTI leader said.

Confirming the development, senior PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry in a Twitter post said that if the government announced early elections, his party was ready to negotiate framework of elections and changes in ECP.

Moreover, President Arif Alvi also reportedly discussed the prevailing political situation with the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Asim Munir in a meeting on Wednesday.

On the other hand, a senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader said that he suggested the ruling party’s leadership should not resist the dissolution of the provincial assembly and opt for elections in the Punjab Assembly.

He believed that the continuity of Pervez Elahi as chief minister was more challenging than early elections in the province, adding that Elahi is distributing massive development funds and employment among members of the provincial assembly which may severally affect the election results in November.

“Therefore, we should go for early elections in Punjab and continue with the federal government,” he added.

He confirmed that one section within the government wanted to hold a dialogue with the PTI regarding general elections in May or June.

A lawyer, however, claimed that such a task would be possible if PML-N had the required numbers.

Meanwhile, Attorney General for Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf Ali while talking to The Express Tribune has also urged the leadership of political parties to sit together for economic accord in the country

Sources revealed that PML-N leadership asked Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Hamza Shahbaz to come to Islamabad on Thursday and brief them about the numbers.

Political analysts said that if the government and establishment guarantee that there will be no coercive actions against PTI leaders, especially Imran Khan, then the party may agree to not dissolve the Punjab Assembly forthwith.

In response to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chair*man Imran Khan’s latest offer of talks, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz — a major partner in the coalition government — refused to budge from their stance that next general elections will be held as per schedule in October 2023.

However, soon after Mr Khan’s offer, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting of the ruling PML-N leaders and decided that moving a no-confidence motion against present provincial governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtun*khwa (KP) would not be a sagacious move and thus the coalition government would go for “wait and see” policy, a source in the ruling party told Dawn.

The source said the meeting did not rule out negotiations with the PTI but it was decided that next general elections would be held on time.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb, soon after Imran Khan’s offer, replied in a tweet in two words —“Elections 2023”.

Shehbaz believes no-trust motion will be unwise, decides govt will go for ‘wait and see’ policy

“October 2023” was the ultimate election month, the minister said in a tweet in reference to a news channel’s report about Mr Khan’s proposal for talks for the snap polls’ date in a threatening tone. She advised Mr Khan to wait for next general elections till October 2023.

Also, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, in a private TV programme, said the government stuck to its stance that elections would be held in Oct 2023.

“We can sit for talks with PTI but on any other issue except snap elections,” he said when asked about PML-N meeting, chaired by the PM.

He said the coalition government came into power through a constitutional way and it reserved rights to complete its constitutional term [till Oct 2023].

Similarly, PML-N leader and interior minister Rana Sanaullah said in a statement that deadlocks always ended through dialogues but the government decided that next elections would take place on time.

He, however, said if Mr Khan dissolved provincial assemblies of Punjab and KP, the government would give a robust response to the PTI chief’s move. He also reminded Mr Khan of his statement “he would prefer to die than to sit with them [PDM leaders]”.

He said the government would condemn if the PTI attempted to dissolve assemblies as it would still be an ‘undemocratic action’ even if it would favour his party. He said the PTI would itself be responsible if it dissolved Punjab and KP assemblies.

Mr Sanaullah said the government would not refuse dialogue with the PTI as it believed in resolving political matters in a political manner. “When political parties and politicians sit down, deadlocks end and paths to resolve conflicts are found,” he remarked.

Its good IK is thinking from his mind now and not relying on establishment. I hope government and PTI go into discussion and find a way to stage elections as per mutual agreement. And all should accept the elections results. It will not only strengthen the political system in Pakistan but also bring economic and social stability

Final after bajwa nahoosat, some good news coming from pakistan politics

PML-N leaders Rana Sanaullah and Khawaja Saad Rafique said on Saturday that “talks don’t come with conditions” as they responded to PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s “one demand” for talks between the parties.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Railways Minister Rafique asked Imran to be “serious” if he sincerely wants negotiations and that “threats, accusations and abuses and talks cannot go hand in hand”.

The statement comes a day after Imran invited the government to “sit down for talks” on the condition that it announces a date for early general elections, failing which he would dissolve the provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“Talks never take place under conditions in the world,” Rafique said. “If you put the demand forward first, on what basis will you talk?”

He added: “We also told their friends that this one-way traffic cannot continue. This is not just your agenda. If PDM decides — Peoples Party, ANP and everyone else decide unanimously — it will be their own agenda.”

Rafique further said: “Besides us, our allies have extreme reservations about talking to them (PTI) and not give them any kind of face-saving.”

He said that their viewpoint was that “assemblies are made for legislation and governance, not for dissolving”.

Rafique said that dissolving the assemblies was akin to “wasting the time and resources of the country and the nation”. “If he will talk seriously, we will respond seriously,” he assured.

Sitting beside him, Interior Minister Sanaullah said: “He wanted to get a date for the election by threatening and hurling abuses at the establishment. He couldn’t.

“If he wants to get a date from us through the same way after having talks, he cannot.”

Rafique clarified that this was their party’s viewpoint. “This is our opinion. The authority to make decisions is with the allies, which include the PDM, Pakistan’s Peoples Party and ANP.

“Only they can make the decision but the way in which he has thrown the ball towards us and passed threats, this cannot be considered. First, correct your manner,” the PML-N leader demanded.

He also told the media that “unofficial communications have taken place between us” in the past and the “interesting thing is that they also communicate by themselves and then also shy away from telling about them”.

FM rules out early polls on PTI chief's demand
Bilawal says government looking for solutions to internal problems

ISLAMABAD:
Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Sunday that he did not see the need for holding early elections in the country on the demand of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, as the government looked for solutions to internal problems.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera, the foreign minister said that the current government inherited “a divided country and a collapsed economy” from its predecessor, adding that early election would further the agenda of the previous government.

“In order to address the challenges inherited from the previous government, it is essential that the whole country gets united as no single political party or individual can address the situation alone,” he said. “The government is looking for solutions to internal problems and consensus at the international level.”

Rubbishing the accusations of a foreign conspiracy behind the removal of Imran Khan, Bilawal, also the Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), said the political leaders were supposed to speak the truth to their people instead of coming up with such conspiracy theories. “It is for the first time that a prime minister was removed constitutionally through a vote of confidence and not through a coup or court order.”

Asked about the early elections, Bilawal said that instead of furthering democracy, the early elections would instead further Imran Khan’s agenda. He stressed the important of completing the five-year term of the assemblies unless there was any urgency which currently was not there.

To another question, Foreign Minister Bilawal said that Kashmir was an unfinished agenda of the Partition, and since Narendra Modi’s election, the space for Muslims in India as well as the Kashmiris was shrinking.

He said the people of Pakistan and Indian wanted to live in peace but in order to achieve that it was essential to respect international laws and conventions to address the issue of terrorism and extremism.

Coming to Afghanistan, the foreign minister said that Pakistan was engaging with the war-torn country in the interest of its own as well as the neighbourhood.

However, he said that the TTP had been involved in terror attacks in the past, which were still going on. He said that Pakistan would work with the Afghan government to address the challenge posed by the terrorist outfits.

Next polls to be based on digital census: Iqbal
Planning minister urges PTI to return to assemblies

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Tuesday said that the next general elections in the country would be held on the basis of data compiled through the 7th population and housing census (digital census) in October 2023.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of training of master trainers for the 7th population and housing census, the minister said the new general election will be held in October 2023 based on the results of the digital census. The results of the census will come in April and the Election Commission of Pakistan will then delimit the constituencies.

The minister said an election based on the results of the last census would be controversial as the government in Sindh had reservations over it.

He said that the government would spend about Rs34 billion on this exercise of vital importance that would help in framing economic policies and ensure equitable distribution of resources among all the stakeholders for the development of the country.

He said that the government is providing Rs13.5 billion to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), which would arrange digital solutions, adding that it would be the first digital census that would help swift completion of the process.

He said that an offline data collection system would also be available for areas out of internet coverage, adding that this census would also determine whether the population was on an increasing or decreasing trend.

The minister said that the census was a constitutional obligation on the basis of which the government determines the National Finance Commission Award and distributes national resources for the just development of all areas.

Ahsan Iqbal said that Pakistan was ranked among the rapidly population-growing countries. He said, due to the increase in population, the availability of basic civic facilities like education, health and clean drinking water were reducing whereas the per-capita availability of water and agricultural land was also on the decline.

He said that a huge bulge of the local population comprised of youth, which was a blessing if we could provide them proper education and skills for the economic development of the country. He said that in the meantime, the increasing polarisation would push this national dividend into extremism and called for creating a balance between resources and challenges.

The minister said that economic stability was not possible overnight, adding that it required proper time and continuity in policies and political stability. He said the crisis which was faced by the current government was created by the previous regime and it was the result of its incapability and bad governance.

However, he said that the government has successfully averted the default challenge on the external front and took tough decisions and was honouring all commitments made by the last government with multi-lateral agencies.

He said that the country tolerated another shock worth $30 billion due to recent flash floods and rains that hit the country particularly Sindh and Balochistan provinces.

He said that the government was also able to overcome this challenge. He said reconstruction and rehabilitation work in all affected areas was in progress and that would continue till the settlement of the last affected person.

Ahsan Iqbal said that the government intended to organise Climate Resilience Conference next month to mobilise about $16 billion for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of flood-affected people, adding that the conference would be attended by friendly countries.

‘Powerful quarters’ and Imran

Later, talking to the media, the minister claimed that the narrative developed by PTI chief Imran Khan had been “badly beaten and exposed” in the local body election in Azad Jammu and Kashmir where 70 per cent of seats were won by other parties.

He said that Imran had launched a “comprehensive propaganda campaign” against national security institutions and had not even forgiven the officers who were martyred in a helicopter crash.

Ahsan Iqbal said that despite the full backing from powerful quarters, the former prime minister could not govern the country due to his incompetence. He added that Imran was given a free hand to run the affairs despite the fact that he had been given "a free hand".

He went on to claim that had the 2018 general elections been fair and transparent, the PTI would not have been able to form a government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa either. “His [Imran’s] government was the first government which was supported by the establishment and the judiciary,” he added.

The minister bemoaned that contrary to all this, discriminatory treatment was meted out to the PML-N.

Ahsan alleged that Punjab – where the PTI is in power – was today plagued by loot and corruption. “Today, no officer wants to be appointed s chief secretary and IG in Punjab.”

The minister urged the PTI to return to assemblies and become part of the electoral reforms process to ensure a free, fair and transparent general election.

"The country cannot afford another political crisis in the wake of the next general election, and needed stability and continuity of policies to move forward in the right direction," he added.

Economic challenges ‘temporary’

The minister cleared that there was no fear of economic default as the economic fundamentals were on sound footing, adding that the current economic challenges, created by the last government, were temporary.

Ahsan Iqbal stressed the need for promoting exports, controlling the imports of luxury goods and encouraging foreign direct investments, besides generating more revenues.

Next elections on basis of existing delimitation: CEC
CEC Raja declined that the ECP was opposed to use of technology, insisting that no one should expect overnight implementation of the plan

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja Wednesday rejected, what he called, the baseless propaganda that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was opposed to use of technology, insisting that no one should expect overnight implementation of the plan.

Speaking in a ceremony held at the ECP Secretariat here to mark the National Voters Day, the CEC said the commission intended to try out different versions of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) in by-elections and local government (LG) polls in future.

He also remarked, “I challenge all critics to show one instance where the ECP has opposed the EVMS or voting rights for overseas Pakistanis, but there should be a procedure. Demonstration of the suitable machines will be given to the stakeholders and recommendations for legislation will be prepared before gradually introducing the machines countrywide.”

The CEC made it clear that the commission was all for use of technology, but stressed that there must be a consensus of all stakeholders on it. He emphasised that the EVMs should be user-friendly and ensure secrecy of the ballot.

He referred to the establishment of Project Management Unit (PMU) at the ECP in January to work on EVMs and e-voting for overseas Pakistanis, saying that it had not been done had the ECP been against the use of technology. Speaking on the pitfalls of introduction of technology in haste, CEC Raja referred to his meeting with the Brazilian ambassador and quoted the envoy saying that “it would be a miracle if the EVMs were used by Pakistan in 2023 general elections.”

The CEC contended that one must not ignore ground realities as the introduction of technology in haste could be counter-productive.

He remarked that EVMs could not be introduced merely by chanting a slogan. He said steps involved in introduction of EVMs included the selection of appropriate machines suiting the country’s environment, procurement, storage and transportation and training of individuals involved, including the polling staff.

Sikandar Sultan Raja said the next general elections will have to be conducted on the basis of existing delimitation, in case of a delay in issuance of the final notification of digital census.

It is pertinent to mention that Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal announced the other day that the next elections would be held on the basis of digital census, which would entail fresh delimitation of constituencies.

The chief election commissioner, without naming anyone, maintained that everyone from the worker to the party head was equal before the ECP and that it acted without discrimination when the law was violated.

He did not specifically mention the PTI foreign funding and Toshakhana cases, but said major decisions had been taken by the commission. The chief election commissioner also remarked, “We might have committed a mistake, but there was no mala fide intention, as the decisions had been given without any pressure and had nothing to do with likes and dislikes.”

He said out of a total of 51 by-polls carried out in 2021 and 2022, including 17 NA and 34 PAs polls, as many as 35 were won by the opposition and this was the proof of transparency in elections, as the common perception was that the government of the day won by-polls.

He explained that during these by-polls, through various measures, strict monitoring was carried out and action was taken against the party heads, public office-holders, candidates and others concerned for violations.

Among other things, he noted that the ECP’s project management unit was also working on establishing a printing facility for the printing of electoral rolls.

Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday instructed the party’s lawmakers and ticketholders to speed up their preparations for the next general elections.

Talking to PTI lawmakers from Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal and Sialkot along with ticket holders of Gujranwala, Imran asked them to devise a comprehensive political strategy and be fully prepared for the next electoral battle, according to a statement issued by PTI.

The central and regional leaders of PTI were also present in the meeting.

The country’s political situation, PTI's political strategy and future plan of action were discussed in in detail during the meeting, the statement added.

On the occasion, the members of the assembly full supported and endorsed the announcement of the dissolution of the assemblies and resignations from the houses.

Last week PTI chief gave the federal government an ultimatum to either “sit and talk and give a date for the general elections” or “we will dissolve the assemblies”.

A day earlier, PTI senior leader and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that his party desired that new provincial governments be formed before Ramazan next year following the dissolution of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab assemblies.

“Imran Khan intends to dissolve K-P and Punjab assemblies in the next few days so that the entire process can move forward. The PTI leadership has given Imran Khan the right to dissolve assemblies,” he said while addressing the media following a meeting between the senior leadership of PTI with the former prime minister.

“If the federal government of PDM wants to give priority to its own interest over the country's, and does not want to move towards general elections and further sink the country in the process, then it is their decision. We desire that the process of elections gets completed in Punjab and K-P before Ramazan," he stated.

Qureshi said that Imran took everyone into confidence about his decision during the meeting, adding that the only solution to the current problems the country was facing was early elections.

Former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan has said that he was sticking to his decision to dissolve the provincial assemblies in December in a bid to force the incumbent government into early elections.

“We will implement our decision to dissolve assemblies. We are holding consultations and preparing our party leaders because negotiations for caretaker set-up will start after the dissolution of assemblies,” the former premier said in an interview with a local TV channel on Saturday.

When asked to give an exact date for assemblies’ dissolution, Imran said, “It will be done in December”.

Fawad challenges PDM to fight ‘instead of running away'
PTI leader says PDM didn’t even ‘see the ball’ Imran hit a day ago

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Hussain Chaudhry has said that they are getting recommendations from different places that they should not push for elections, adding that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and allies should fight “instead of running away”.

Talking to the media at Zaman Park, he said that the PML-N should not use the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as its “partner”. It is written in the constitution that the elections should be held within the stipulated time, he added.

Fawad said that for the last eight months, the politics of Pakistan has been revolving around PTI chief Imran Khan.

“Imran Khan bowls the first over in the morning, [and] after that PDM continues to rotate with the same ball. We have played the political test match as a T20,” he remarked.

He said that PDM did not see the ball that Imran hit on Saturday.

“PML-N and other parties should not run away and should compete. We are receiving recommendations from different places that ‘you should not hold elections’,” he added.

The PTI leader said that if the National Assembly (NA) is not dissolved, the PML-N will not get candidates in the next election.

The former federal minister said that to avoid elections, they “bring forward the election commission”.

He said that PTI will do the politics of the people. In Pakistan, people's future decisions are made by sitting in closed rooms, but now the powerful have to think if they do not accept the people's decision, the loss will be Pakistan's, he highlighted.

Fawad said that if the government is thinking that people's decisions are not important, then they are wrong. At least 750,000 doctors and engineers have left the country, and investors are not investing in Pakistan, he added.

He said that the speaker suspended the session of the National Assembly due to their resignations, adding that the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) does not even have a candidate.

“Asif Zardari has abolished the People's Party, I demand that the speaker accept our resignations, the National Assembly elections should also be held along with the provincial assemblies,” he remarked.

“People's support decides whether you can govern or not, PDM should not run away from elections now because the field is there and the horse is there,” he further said.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday revealed that the party would dissolve assemblies in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on December 23 (Friday), staking his hard-earned political ground on a bid to trigger early elections.

"We will sacrifice both assemblies... we are sacrificing them for this nation... there will be elections in 66 per cent of Pakistan," Imran announced.

Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Monday said that he does not see general elections happening anytime soon, adding that Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi "may remain in power for the next four to five months".

Shujaat expressed these remarks while talking to the media after meeting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at his residence in Lahore — his second meeting with the prime minister in the last 24 hours. PML-N leader Salik Hussain, Atta Tarar and Malik Ahmed were also present during the meeting.

Chaudhry Shujaat said that the future political strategy would be decided with the consensus of other parties. "The PPP and PML-N are considering their options, including the option of a no-confidence vote," he said

Shujaat said that he was not in contact with the Pakistan Democratic Alliance (PDM) but with Asif Ali Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif. "There's a bit of tension about Punjab [Assembly], but soon a solution will come up," he added.

The PML-Q chief said that if Pervaiz Elahi decides, he can remain in power for the next four to five months. "I do not see elections happening anytime soon because, while some people are trying to dissolve the assembly, others are attempting to save it," he added.

The former prime minister further said that PTI chief Imran Khan was a wise man and does not need any consultation.

A day earlier, the prime minister held a meeting with the PML-Q chief following Imran's announcement of December 23 as the date to dissolve the Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) provincial assemblies to force fresh general elections in the country.

The ruling coalition has tasked Chaudhry Shujaat with preventing the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly by his cousin and fellow PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

According to sources, it was agreed that the federal ministers from the PML-N would contact the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) leaders for consultation on moving a no-confidence motion in the Punjab Assembly or asking Chief Minister Elahi to seek a vote of confidence.

Imran Khan, while culminating his long march last month, had said that he would dissolve the provincial assemblies where the PTI is in power. He had also said that the party lawmakers in Sindh and Balochistan would also resign.

After consulting party leaders and lawmakers for three weeks, Imran had announced that the dissolution would take place on Friday, December 23. The dissolution and resignations would trigger fresh elections within 90 days in nearly two-thirds of the total constituencies.

Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan has predicted that the general elections could be held in the country in March or April 2023.

Speaking to a select group of journalists here at his Zaman Park residence on Saturday, Imran said the court had given time to take a vote of confidence.

On Friday, the Lahore High Court reinstated Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as the chief minister of Punjab after Governor Balighur Rehman had on Thursday ousted him for not taking a vote of confidence.

Imran Khan doesn’t see immediate fresh polls
PTI Chief Imran Khan has made another prediction regarding the general elections and stated that he does not see immediate fresh polls

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has made another prediction regarding the general elections and stated that he does not see immediate fresh polls.

A few days ago, the former prime minister had predicted fresh polls in the country by March, April 2023.

Talking to media persons, including the newly-elected body of Lahore Press Club that called on him on Wednesday at Zaman Park, Imran Khan stated that a new issue of technocrat caretaker set-up was being trumpeted these days. “There is hearsay about a technocrat government being brought forward.”

The back stage elements need to show consent for the fresh elections. Rather than the incumbent government, it is necessary for those “backing it” to get convinced for the polls to be held soon, he added.

LG polls in Karachi, Hyderabad to be held on Jan 15: ECP

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) ruled on Monday that the local government (LG) polls in Karachi, Hyderabad and Thatta divisions would be held on Jan 15 as per the schedule.

The verdict was pronounced by the Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja on a petition filed by MQM wherein it had challenged the decision of the electoral body for the prospective use of two separate electoral rolls in the upcoming elections simultaneously.

At the previous hearing, the ECP had reserved its verdict on the plea.

Mr Rehman is likely to have a meeting with PM Shehbaz on the issue on Saturday (today).

ECP says general election to be held on basis of 2022 electoral rolls
The ECP said the next general elections will be held on the basis of electoral rolls issued on October 7, 2022.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Sunday said the next general elections will be held on the basis of electoral rolls issued on October 7, 2022.

A spokesperson for the electoral body said this in reaction to the statements made by various politicians, including Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, with reference to delimitation of constituencies in Sindh and union councils of Islamabad.

The spokesperson said: “All allegations against the Election Commission are baseless, contrary to the law and facts. The media statement made by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Sahib is also wrong and tantamount to misleading the public and shows that his knowledge of the election laws is very low.

“The Election Commission is discharging its constitutional and legal responsibilities in a befitting manner. The ECP is accused of using old electoral rolls in local government elections in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions. On this, it is clarified that after the release of any election schedule, no name can be entered, excluded or corrected in the electoral rolls under Section 39 of the Elections Act, 2017.”

PERVAIZ ELAHI PREDICTS GENERAL ELECTIONS IN THREE MONTHS

Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) top leader and Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has predicted that the general elections will be held in the next three months, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

Pervaiz Elahi said on Twitter that the country will witness the general election this time while some matters are still being discussed in backdoor talks.

He slammed Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government for doing nothing and pushing the country to default.

CM Punjab suggested all political parties set aside their differences, otherwise, the country would be facing the same situation as Sri Lanka.

ARY

Pakistan Democratic Movement's (PDM) spokesperson Hafiz Hamdullah, on Sunday, warned the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) that the general polls, expected to be held in October 2023, can be postponed if the country's economy does not recover.

The Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam's (JUI-F) leader said that the country was financially restrained when the "forcefully imposed" PTI was ousted.

Depleting reserves

Pakistan is striving to strengthen its plunging foreign exchange reserves, currently at $4.601 billion, just enough to pay for only four weeks of imports.

After a decline of 22.11% in the week ending on January 6, the State Bank of Pakistan's (SBP) reserves have dropped to the lowest level since February 2014.

The country is in severe need of foreign aid to shrink its current account deficit as well as have adequate reserves to pay its debt obligations for the ongoing financial year.

The central bank's reserves until January 6, fell $1.233 billion, or 22.12% to $4.343 billion, down from last week's $5.576 million.

The political uncertainty in the country has had severe adverse effects on the economy, with the local currency plunging and inflation at decades-high levels. Devastating floods and a global energy crisis have added to the existing crisis.

Pakistan looks at IMF again
The government, amid a severe reserves crunch, seeks to pass the ninth review of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to secure a $1.1 billion bailout package.

Pakistan shared the basic contours of negotiations with IMF high-ups amid anticipations of virtual talks between both sides from next week.

While virtual talks are expected to kick-start on Monday it is not yet known whether the upcoming talks will be formal or informal. If formal talks begin, it will be a significant development as informal talks had continued during the last two and a half months.

One top official of the Finance Division also confirmed to The News that the government shared the basic contours of the upcoming round of talks with the IMF Mission Chief Nathan Porter.

Pakistan and IMF would discuss fiscal consolidation, including taking additional taxation measures and curtailing expenditures to restrict the budget deficit within the envisaged limit agreed upon with the IMF.

Taking all required corrective measures to devise a sustainable roadmap for cash bleeding energy sector, curtailing the flow and stocks of the circular debt, hiking tariffs of electricity and gas sectors, and bringing the exchange rate aligned to the free market mechanism would also be discussed.

The official further added that the IMF’s mission chief informed Pakistan about their readiness to hold virtual talks next week, and the review mission could also visit Pakistan if needed.

“If all thorny issues are resolved in virtual meetings, then the staff-level agreement might be struck without paying a physical visit in the next seven to 15 days,” the top official said.

PTI demands snap polls
On the other hand, PTI, since its government was overturned through a vote of no-confidence in April last year, has continuously demanded the federal government call for elections.

PTI chief Imran Khan, who was ousted through a no-trust vote, reiterated the need for fair and transparent snap polls as the foremost solution to the crises.

The PDM-led government's stance on conducting elections on time remains unchanged.

PTI, since its ouster, launched two unsuccessful long marches — in May and October 2022 — to force the government to conduct snap polls.

Siraj demands early general election

Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Sirajul Haq has demanded that instead of holding polls in two provinces, early general elections should be held throughout the country, asking all the political forces to initiate dialogue to develop a consensus on the matter.

“Caretaker setup should be formed at centre and provinces and elections should be held in entire country at the same time,” he said while presiding over a meeting of central working committee (Majlise Aamla) at Mansoorah on Monday.

The meeting attended by JI leaders Liaqat Baloch, Ameerul Azim, Hafiz Naeemur Rahman and others discussed national political and economic situation and held that the PDM, the PPP and the PTI equally responsible for the prevailing crises. The meeting demanded transparent enquiry into the countrywide electricity breakdown which kept the millions of people without electricity for whole day, causing losses of billions of rupees. The meeting also called for implementation of Federal Shariat Court decision of making the economy interest-free.

The JI leaders asked the government to release the detained leaders and workers of Gwadar Rights Movement, saying the rulers should listen to the people of Balochistan instead of pushing them to the wall. Siraj expressed satisfaction over the success of JI in Karachi local government elections, reiterating the resolve that JI will give mayor to the metropolitan. He said JI will bring stability and prosperity in Karachi by taking all stakeholders on board.

Imran to contest NA by-polls on all 33 seats
PTI chief again taking no risks; party members who left seats to file papers as 'covering candidates'

PTI chairman and former premier Imran Khan has decided to set another record by contesting the by-elections for all the 33 seats of the National Assembly -- left vacant after his party members resigned from them -- scheduled to be held on March 16.

Earlier in October last year, the PTI chief ran for eight constituencies and made history by bagging six seats.

“The PTI’s core committee and parliamentary party in its joint session has decided that Imran would be the party’s candidate in the upcoming by-elections,” PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood told the media in Lahore on Sunday.

He added that the earlier elected candidates from these constituencies would file their nominations as ‘covering candidates’.

Giving details of the joint session, Qureshi, who was accompanied by PTI Secretary General Asad Umar, said detailed discussions were held on the “gross violations” of the Constitution, suspension of basic human and fundamental rights as well as the nosediving economic conditions of the country.

Split-up polls unaffordable, agree Punjab, KP governors

Khyber Pakhtun*khwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali on Monday met his Punjab counterpart Balighur Rehman and caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi and agreed that the country could not afford separate elections in current circumstances and, therefore, polls for national and provincial assemblies should be held later this year after the completion of the federal government’s tenure in August.

At the same time, the federal coalition has also declared that there is “no need for new legislation” to take the elections in Punjab and KP beyond 90 days.

The government’s intention not to hold polls in both the provinces within 90 days is adding to the frustration of the PTI leadership which has linked its ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ with an inordinate delay in the elections (in Punjab and KP).

“Pakistan can’t afford two separate elections as billions of rupees will be spent on the exercise,” the Punjab governor told reporters here on Monday. He clearly hinted that elections in Punjab and KP would be held once the federal government’s tenure was completed.

“As the general elections are going to take place later this year, demand for an early election in two provinces seems out of place keeping in view economic woes of the country,” Mr Rehman commented.

Former prime minister and PTI chief Imran Khan has said that the nation for the first time in the country’s history did not accept the “regime change operation” — a reference to his ouster from power through opposition’s no-confidence vote in April last year.

Speaking to representatives of foreign media in Lahore on Tuesday, Imran said he strongly believed that the next elections would be rigged, adding, “The officials involved in atrocities on the PTI workers on May 25 are being posted in Punjab”.

He pointed out that it was clear in the Constitution that elections should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of assemblies.

Speaking about the arrests of PTI leaders, Imran criticised the caretaker governments in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, saying that he has never seen such reprisals in the history of the country.

He added that the policy of former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa was continuing. “In the absence of rule of law the country could not move forward,” he added.

PDM GOVT PLANS MOVING COURT TO DEFER GENERAL POLLS

The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government has devised a strategy to defer the general polls and mulled over legal options, citing sources, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

The coalition parties held consultations to defer the organisation of general elections in the provinces and the Centre. Sources said that the coalition parties decided to use PDM’s platform.

Sources added that the PDM parties will approach the court and complete homework for filing a petition. It was also learnt that the PDM parties consulted legal experts for submitting a petition to the court seeking the postponement of general polls.

The development came after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan announced the ‘Jail Bharo’ movement to mount pressure on the incumbent government to organise polls.

In a video message yesterday, Khan asserted that he would soon announce a date for ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’, calling on the party workers to be prepared for the movement.
