[VIDEO] Congratulations Azhar Ali - 17th Test Century

Azhar Ali's 100

Congrats, what an innings under pressure

17 test match centuries is pretty good for our standards. He has been a good test match player for us.

Azhar Ali 17 century in 81 tests.

Root 19 century in 96 tests.

Azhar Ali 17 century in 81 tests.

Root 19 century in 96 tests.

My apologies to brothers.

Root 17 century in 97 tests.

Pujara 18 century in 77 tests.

Azhar Bhai 17 century in 81 tests.

17th century.

One of the best test match centuries I have ever seen by a Pakistani batsman.

Scored under immense pressure and scrutiny.

Well done brother. :14:

Yet Pakistani fans fall over backwards for Root but give flak to Azhar.

Disgraceful.

I watched every ball of this test match.

He's performed under surreal pressure. Credit where it's due.

Has held the fort for Pakistan test batsmanship this decade.

They need another of these players for 2020-2030. Maybe it will be Babar Azam.

Hats off to the grit, resilience and determination Azhar Bhai shown in this match.

No doubt, not the most talented out there but he certainly deserves more respect for his test exploits.

It's a good contribution however the match is gone. Great players are match winners.

Sign him up for another 5 years of captaincy. Serious yaar this was need in the 1st test. A good performance in a match that could be a loss or a draw depending on how many days are left. Serious. No credit yet, he’s got a lot of work still to do!

Too much disrespect for this hero.

Is it because he ain't a flashy player.

Yes and to think that he could have actually achieved more if he played as an opener, it's worth respect the man.

Our best test bat in the last decade after Misbah and Younis. Hasn't been at his best in the last 2 years though, so happy to see him score again.

No credit yet?? Classy knock from Azhar. Deserves all the credit he gets.

Good innings under immense pressure with the match situation as it is as well as personally. I don't like to say this but this hundred may well hinder Pakistan in the long run. Azhar Ali is a good lad but it's clear as daylight that his best days are far behind him and the Pakistan selectors should be moving him on. But knowing Pakistan cricket, this century would extend his career by another 2 years which unfortunately would be damaging.

Celebrating as if it was a match winning knock when there is a likelihood of a follow on. Have some shame man.

On a potentially match saving century in England.

Humble pie to all his detractors.

Thanks for the support guys (@King_Kohli as well) during this match and rightfully mentioning how good Azhar has been over the years for Pak. :)

Congrats- my most respected PAK cricketer. May not be flashy and very limited batsman, but he has character & guts. I am sure this won’t be his last hundred for PAK. For his own good, he should step down and focus on batting. A true captain’s knock against the wind.

Well played but this doesn't take away the fact that he has mostly looked like a clueless captain and this has been an embarrassing series for Pakistan.

He must not be captain after this series and at least a couple of coaching staff should leave. Misbah isn't aggressive which is a demand for modern day cricket and Waqar/Mushy have been involved in coaching a long time but have failed to help develop a single good bowler.

Maybe Pakistan should just have one coach because these specialist consultants don't seem to help.

Misbah was celebrating Azhar's knock as though he had been vindicated. Don't think he's going anywhere for now.

That was the first mtch of an overseas tour after a long break. Even great players take some tome to settle in. England lost their first match against West indies after their lay off too, despite it being their home test

It was a good innings under pressure and he had worked on areas he was struggling with, so deserves some credit.

But what matters is the series outcome unfortunately.

It was a great knock.

Hope he leaves captaincy so that he can focus more on his batting.

Because we all know he ain’t going anywhere so it will be better for us and him if he can get in form.

I’m sure he has gotten a lot more confidence after this innings.

By the way I read on Twitter that Azhar has been actually averaging 50.00 since the last 5 Test matches. (Surely this isn’t true...)

He's 35 and only going to get worse, can't see him doing anything in NZ apart from getting another impactless knock.

Should definitely be moved on.

Scores in his last 5 matches:

0 & 118 vs Sri Lanka
34 vs Bangladesh
0 & 18 vs England
20 vs England
141* vs England

Avg: 55.2

As Kurt Angle would say, it's true...

Azhar for Pakistan is as valuable as Pujara for us. Both players may not play the most attractive brand of Cricket yet they are very effective. Pakistan fans need to show more respect to their great.

Another 50 tests and he can take over Inzzy.

Yeah in an ideal world, he should.

But this is PCB. :)

You actually think he could score more 100s? Why the confidence in Azhar?

A couple of low scores with a couple of high scores. Not sure what my opinion is on this...

If Misbah can play in his mid-40s then why not Ali. He can play for another 10 years.

Watch him coming out of retirement in 2027 and be our captain at the World Cup for “experience”.

Misbah has set the trend for the mid-40s. He was cheering for him here as well and Misbah is the boss. Ali will play for years. I won't personally play Ali given how he has been playing, but he is going nowhere for the next few years with Misbah as boss.

You actually think he could score more 100s? Why the confidence in Azhar?

Because he's shown in this Test that he can learn. the subtle change in stance is indication that he's paying attention to his game. I don't mind him coming in as a batsman. He has to go as Captain though.

Anyone knocking him today after a fantastic innings is a terrible fan. Every single person went into the day's play thinking that England would have the Pakistan first innings wrapped up by lunch and be closing in on victory by the evening. Azhar played a fantastic innings with support from Rizwan and Fawad. Give the man his day. He rightly deserves to be criticised, but today he has earned applause for not letting his demons get the best of him and for carrying the batting line-up away from complete humiliation.

I have already said he deserves credit for today. I'm not sure he has much left going forward.

Indeed as long as Misbah is there Ali won’t be going anywhere.

Congratulations to Azhar for a career saving century! He went out to bat knowing that if he failed again, the calls for his head would grow so loud that he probably would lose both the captaincy and his spot in the team. To perform under that pressure, whilst the rest of the team mostly fell like flies around him, deserves some special credit.

Azhar is unfortunate that this is a three match series where game 2 was effectively washed out as well. If you look at some of the English boys like Jos Butler, it's taken him 4 test matches just to find form and now he's cashing in. Too often for team Pakistan, series are too short for players to get into rythem and then make decent runs.

He looks 25 to me...should continue to play for another 7 years at least

We've been speaking to Pakistan captain AZHAR ALI in the Player Zone this morning, reflecting on his fine, unbeaten 141 yesterday...

"Very pleased. We are quite behind in the game but, as a team, we talked about fighting through the tough periods and, obviously as the captain, I wanted to be leading from the front.

"It doesn't matter how many I score, so long as I'm fighting in the middle. It shows other players it can be done."

AZHAR passed 6,000 Test runs during his innings yesterday...

"A very proud moment for me, 6,000 runs; the last couple of years have been very tough for me, I haven't been as consistent as a few years back - when I had a run of scoring at 50+ - and I hope this innings takes me back to that again.

"Getting my name with those legends is a proud moment for me."

Miandad is the best, but YK having the best conversion for these stats. 0.29 and just ousting Yousuf's 0.27.

However, its arguable who's the second best bat after Miandad.

Top 10 Pakistan test batsmen of all-time:-

1. Javed Miandad
2. Younis Khan
3. Inzamam ul haq
4. Mohammad Yousuf
5. Hanif Mohammad
6. Saeed Anwar
7. Zaheer Abbas
8. Saleem Malik
9. Misbah-ul-Haq
10. Azhar Ali

Azhar Bhai has managed to cement a spot in top 10 list of Pakistani batsmen.

Bowling has improved tremendously over the last 20 years so I'mnnot sure where this idea of batting has become easier stems from?

Modern players generally play at a faster run rate hence the number of players hitting milestones is becoming more frequent but this doesn't suggest it has been easier to achieve such milestones.

"A Captain's knock - you cannot keep a good man down - Well played Azhar Ali" : Nasser Hussain

Azhar Ali the batsman is one of the finest produced by Pakistan in this format of the game. You are an absolute fool if you can not recognize that. All this talk of him being dropped/removed is very childish. Do these same people honestly think we have better batsman sitting in domestic cricket?

Azhar Ali the captain however is a different story. I pity the man, I feel even he did not want captaincy. Man is inept and totally clueless and I feel this is just a temporary stint for him until PCB feel Babar Azam is ready.

Shafiq needs to be dropped before anyone In the team

Once Pakistan got reduced to 29-4 , it became the Azhar Ali show !

Credit to him to really take his team out of deep waters . Phenomenal knock in the first innings and a very crucial knock in the second innings .

Leading scorer for the team in the series with a 50 plus average , and if it was not for a freak partnership they could have won the series.

Match saving knock. Even I was calling for his head, but I've got to say, he exceeded expectations.

Even with all this rain, Pakistan would have lost this match by an innings and would have caused utter humiliation if Azhar Ali had not played a wonderful innings. This draw has gained some self respect for Pakistan as the first test loss was a close contest. It is obvious that England were the better team and we need to improve. Some phases of cricket showed why we are ranked No. 7 right now.

We can't sit back and accept this 7th ranking. Should fight tooth and nail to get back up.

I agree with you but the improvement can be done gradually. We need to invest in younger players and trust them. After this series, Asad Shafiq should be dropped. I would have loved someone else as captain but I do not see any good choice available. Azhar, the batsman, can play till he performs and his performance in this test match has given us some hope. In the bowling, we really need to work hard on them and rotate the fast bowlers. I believe age is with both Shaheen and Naseem and they should be part of the squad and rotated for test matches. Also, both are not finished products with Naseem being really raw but I would say that we need to ignore the hype as well as the over-reaction to the poor performance in the series. We need to back our youngsters.
