I don't think it would have made a difference to the end result, but Sri Lanka will feel uncomfortable to know that the match referee (Andy Pycroft) and Murali Karthik (presenter) messed up and eventually India won the toss when it was actually Sri Lanka who won the toss. See the toss video here:

Virat Kohli called "Heads" which was repeated by Murali Karthik but Andy Pycroft said "Tails, India" which caused the confusion as it looks like Murali Karthik heard "India" and thought it was Heads (which he repeats again). Andy Pycroft was totally confused at that point (as seen in the video) and even tried signalling it but looks like he just let it slip!

Looks like Karthik messed up but why on earth didn't the match referee make more of an effort to correct the situation?

indeed! it appears that the match referee is even attempting to signal to murali that the outcome was not in india's favor but by then evidently the sri lankan captain had walked away, and the camera had already settled on the discussion between murali and virat.

had this been in another country, say the united states, where there is not so much deference to the perceived "power gap", the match referee would have interjected and corrected the proceedings.

nevertheless, it is unlikely sri lanka would have won anything other than the toss that night.

Ref's mistake because he said "Tails, India" even though India called "Heads", should have stepped in and corrected his mistake. Not that it would have any bearing on the final result of the match. However, if situation was reversed BCCI would have already cancelled the Sri Lanka return series by now citing security issues.

Match referees should also be given microphones in toss presentation so that their call can be heard clearly.

When will this game modernize?

Heck get rid of the umpires and use technology for 99% correct decisions, umpires less likely to get hurt too.

No bearing on the result..... but does impact those with bets on the toss!

In light of the recent fixing allegations, does anyone know if the ICC issued a response to this? Betting on the outcome of the toss is very popular. The odds are always 1/1, so if you know the result or it is fixed, you will double your money instantly. If this is able to be fixed, it has to be the easist way of making huge money.

The man had just ONE job that day! He was there only for looking at a coin, and he screwed it up!!!!
