In a recent interview, he has said that he bowled the fast ball in history but due to being from Karachi, this was not publicized!

He may have a point

As per web:

That record is currently held by former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who recorded 161.3kph on the speed gun during the 2003 World Cup fixture against England.

Speed gun error

But the funny thing is that Mohammad Sami was still the fastest Pakistani bowler in PSL when he played there last.

That guy had pace.

Here we go the karachi card being pulled out again Whats wrong with some of these pakistani players?

That delivery doesn’t even look 92-93 mph, let alone 100+.

I don’t know about it’s reading on the speed gun, but Akhtar’s yorker to Fleming in the 1999 World Cup semifinal is the fastest delivery I have ever seen.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the fastest delivery he or anyone has ever bowled. It certainly looked faster than his official fastest delivery.

Were you present at the ground?

It was 148 km/hr

I think quite a few of the Karachi cricketers have a chip on their shoulder and this is another example of that .

A friend of Sami's once accused me of photoshopping a picture which clearly showed that Sami was carrying a few extra pounds :)

I asked for the 'original' picture - 2 years on I'm still waiting for that picture.

Afridi in an interview when asked on why did Sami badly underachieve in international cricket, he highlighted the importance of choosing your friends, social circle wisely and unfortunately Sami hung out, spent his time with the wrong kinds of people. He was his team mate in the Pakistani, Karachi and HBL team so he might know something we don't

While Sami is obviously wrong about his Karachi comment here, there is no doubt that players from a certain area of the country are favoured no matter how awful they are. Neutral and credible posters like MMHS have also stated this multiple times

Sami is wrong here but you have to be very naive to think that discrimination didn’t happen with some Karachi players.

100 mph not recognized because of karachi bias?
Dude was lucky he got to play so long with that 50 plus bowling average in test cricket.
Ironically there was pressure on Bob woolmer to play sami over asif in the karachi test vs india but Bob stuck to his gut feel.

Well Shoaib's 100 mph was a harmless delivery as well, easily managed to the leg side by Nick Knight I think.

It is true that Sami was sidelined unfairly on a number of occasions by our captains.

It is unfortunate that he was also socially a little awkward and an introvert, which meant that he was not able to make friendships in the team or plead his case well.
He was a beautiful bowler to watch when on song and when given the right environment to excel.

Sami did hit 95mph in England 2003 in the away ODI series

You also a believer of your naked eye impressions over machines and speed guns and the like?

Lol no amount of friendship, networking can help you if you average 50 plus with the ball in 30-40 test matches. It can be argued he played as much as he did because of his relationships in the team and the PCB

Lol @ Harmless. You say this as if that delivery got spanked for 4 or 6.

160 k can’t be harmless unless it’s bowled on a truly bad line and length, even then it requires lightning fast reflexes to nail perfectly with timing.

It was actually Sami's pace that resulted in him playing that many matches

Uff looks like I hurt a soft spot there. Yea because England were blown away by the Pakistani team that world cup

Shoaib's most fastest delivery that appeared on TV to me was the delivery he got Gilchrist with in the 2002 test match. Also featured in the balls of the century on cricinfo. However the delivery's pace measured was 89 mph

Nope, Pakistan was hapless that WC and deserved the humiliation in that tournament.

But that’s not what we’re talking about are we? We’re talking about bowling speeds. Maybe you are the flash and 160 kph is slow to you.

Sami was consistently bowling over 95mph that match. Twice breached 100mph mark sami.jpg

Speed gun error cannot be that frequent.

He definitely deserved recognition for the remarkable feat, as well as more chances in ODIs. He used to bowl very well in ODIs, especially with his yorkers at the death. Was discarded way too early in ODIs, when still in his 20s

That was a time when bowling coaches would not be around, and no one especially there to guide these tearaway fast bowlers what lines and lengths to bowl and how to set batsmen up.

Sami could have been a Pakistan great, especially in ODIs with his skills

Agreed

Was recently in the news about this!

Have compared Mohd Samis bowling action, release, run up from the 2003 England Series and then compared it to his bowling videos from 2004 onwards.

By reducing his run up, he lost control and swing, seam, bounce with the ball. He became a gun barrel straight predictable bowler from there on out.

Forget the Karachi card stuff, but why is it so unbelievable that sami couldn’t bowl 100 or 101mph. I remember he was bowling up to 98mph in other matches in the same odi series. If this was some random who’d never hit 90mph then it could be an abberation. Say what you want about sami but in 2003 and 2004 he was seriously quick!

It was mentioned as speed gun error on news articles the next day as well.

The fastest ever ball by Sami is 156.4

Thats 97mph and express.

Totally agree... still struggle to see it through the air.

Man pathetic stuff from Sami to use the karachi card.

Just because you under achieve, doesnt mean you go out blaming others. Him and Kaneria are two biggest tools.

Sami was fast. Infact, even during the psl he was bowling with better pace than many of our youngsters.

Misbah utilized him well at Isb united.

and a super catch by Rashid Latif. No doubt Sami was really quick and had the potential to become a great bowler. He just didnt had the brain and may be what Afridi said about him not having the right company also effected him. He was a super fielder too

I wonder if Afridi was referring to substance abuse. If you listen to Sami's voice, his voice box is messed up which can happen from drug abuse

Back in the early 2000s, cricket was absolute madness!

Shoaib and Sami opening the bowling for Pakistan

There has been spells of Brett Lee and Shaun Tait opening the bowling for Australia.

Cricket was Awesome back then!

He was regularly upto about 95mph in that england series post the world cup in 2003 with controlled outswing

It was all downhill after that unfortunately

Some reporter asked an unknown broadcaster who said there "might" have been an speed gun error. There was no official statement. News reports like that are never reliable sources

The fact that Sami was constantly express that match and other bowlers were recorded with normal speeds clearly shows there was unlikely an speed gun error.

Speed gun error can happen on one ball or multiple balls.

What you are saying is malfunctioning speed gun, where all readings are false.

Official statement by whom?

Here is a brett lee delivery at 161.8. not counted due to speed gun error.

The fastest Sami ever bowled was 156.4. so highly unlikely that he bowled at 164 or 162.

On this day in 1981, One of the fastest bowlers of Pakistan after Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami was born.

The right-arm fast bowler represented Pakistan in 136 international matches and took 227 wickets. He also has 2 hat-tricks to his name.

IIRC he bowled several 157/158 KMPH deliveries in SHarjah 2003/04

He was definitely one of the fastest. While I was playing for Malir Gymkhana I faced him on a cement wicket.... Trust me he was absolutely furious. As a batter you only had half a second to judge the ball that’s how quick he was.

Doesnt matter if he was fastest or not, it was probably the fastest the Indian batters ever faced in their life.

What a useless career, started with so much promise with a dream debut, hat tricks in ODI and Test Cricket and then ended up averaging 50 plus in test cricket. He was once an A grade player in the team from 2003-2005 but then fell away to become a third seamer for Pakistan.

no bro.. he was very quick!

i have faced him and i can assure u he was the quickest at his peak.

I see.

When I hear 160 KMH, I picture Shoaib Akthar, Mohammad Zahid, Shaun Tait, and Brett Lee. No other name comes to my mind.

But, I agree with you Sami was very quick and used to touch 150 KMH frequently.

I remember Sami once said that he bowled the fastest delivery but it was not counted by the ICC.

He was quick, a genuine fast bowler.
