ECB launch investigation after police called to end post-Ashes drinks (Eng & Aus players)

The England and Wales Cricket Board has said it will investigate after police were called to break up a drinking session marking the end of the Ashes series.

Rival players and staff enjoyed a get together in the aftermath of Australia's 4-0 series win in Hobart late on Sunday night, standard practice at the conclusion of a tour.

But their socialising proved too rowdy for a fellow guest at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Tasmania Police were called and sent four officers to bring an end to the boozy gathering, which had spilled out on to an open air terrace.

A video clip shows England captain Joe Root, record wicket-taker James Anderson - who had not played in the final Test - and Australian trio Nathan Lyon, Alex Carey and Travis Head sitting quietly at a table filled with beer bottles.

In the footage one of the police officers is heard to say "you're too loud, you've obviously been asked to pack up" and "time for bed" with a clock in the background showing 6.30am.

The party happily makes its way watched on by staff members, but a voice which appears to be that of England assistant coach Graham Thorpe identifies the group of players before adding "just video this for the lawyers".

An ECB spokesperson said: "During the early hours of Monday morning, members of the England and Australia men's teams shared a drink in the team areas of the hotel in Hobart.

"The hotel management received a noise complaint by a hotel guest and, as is commonplace in Australia, the local police attended the scene.

"When asked to leave by hotel management and the Tasmanian police, the players and management in question left and returned to their respective hotel rooms. The England party have apologised for any inconvenience caused.

"The ECB will investigate further."

PA quoted a Tasmania Police statement, saying they would take no further action.

The incident appears to be minor in itself, hinging on little more than a few raised voices after an Ashes tour, but may cause the ECB to look further at the issue of team culture.

It could now form part of a tour review by Ashley Giles, the managing director of men's cricket.

The English and alcohol don't mix- anywhere in the world.

Bit of a bad look to be drinking all night after losing in such fashion.

Looks like they are drowning their sorrows :)) minor incident in comparison to what's happened before aussies probably called police on purpose to inflict more humiliation on root and Anderson, Thorpe as a senior shouldn't have been recording thi made it such a bigger issue than it is

So the players had some drinks together after the end of the series, someone called in a noise complaint to the police (rather than just asking the hotel first for some reason?) who attended and the players seemed to pretty respectfully move on? Looks like a non-issue to me.

Both sets of players involved - and to be honest, they look harmless!

Why is Thorpe talking about lawyers, it was a simple "times up guys go home", it must be bad being in the England set up when you can't trust anyone.

A bombshell report into England’s disastrous Ashes campaign has revealed worrying details about the preparation, culture and performance that culminated in a 4-0 drubbing.

The tourists saved their worst for last, collapsing in humiliating fashion to cough up the final Test in Hobart inside three days. They failed to pass 300 at any stage of the series and serious questions are being asked about the need to blow up the structure of English cricket and start again.

A damning insight into the tour from hell by English cricket writer Nick Hoult for The Telegraph outlined the issues around quarantine that hampered the team’s ability to prepare for the series — including inclement weather and lack of practice matches resulting in more indoor than outdoor training — and put the spotlight on poor selections.

The report outlines angst with particularly invasive Covid testing procedures, especially in Sydney, where a more uncomfortable swab was required as the virus threatened to derail the series.

As outlined in The Telegraph: “Some players refused to do it, others did it and then made a stand saying they would not let their partners and young children go through the same procedure. It led to the biggest row between players and management of the whole tour and was only resolved by the resumption of normal PCR testing for those who refused.”

The report goes on to detail fitness issues within the camp. “One player refused to take part in the skin-fold test — a gauge of body fat — and, when pressed, accused England of trying to fat shame him. The test was never carried out,” Hoult writes.

“Fitness levels clearly dipped for some players, who started the tour in good shape but appeared to let that side drift as the tour went on. (Ollie) Robinson’s conditioning was an issue from the first Test, when he spent time off the field, but became a recurring theme in every game.”

The report says Ollie Robinson played golf on a day off in Hobart despite carrying a shoulder injury that was threatening his place in the starting XI for the last Test.

During the match in Hobart, England bowling coach Jon Lewis alluded to Robinson’s fitness issues after the seamer left the field and couldn’t come back to bowl, suffering from what was described as back stiffness.

“It (fitness) is something he (Robinson) needs to improve. He’s got a record of playing a lot of games of county cricket,” Lewis said. “Playing international cricket is a higher intensity and you play all year around. He’s got to get used to understanding what it takes to be a full-time, year-round international cricketer.

The Telegraph also reports of concerns around a drinking culture in the squad before Covid protocols were tightened later in the series, while players were allegedly not always on the same page when it came to team management and tactics involving spinner Jack Leach — who was belted in Brisbane and axed for the second Test, despite the Adelaide Oval curator predicting the pitch would turn.

“Some senior players felt left out of discussions over tactics and another was angered to learn he had been dropped after reading it in the press. Another felt he had not been given enough time to prepare for a Test, learning only 48 hours before that he would be playing,” Hoult reports.

“The tactics for Leach also caused bemusement among the squad. Before the Brisbane Test it was agreed England would be defensive when Leach came on for the first time, knowing Australia would be scenting blood. Players were incredulous when Root brought the field in and attacked, with Leach being taken apart by Australia’s top order. It took him weeks to get over and affected selection for Adelaide.”

Question is who leaked the video, Thorpe was filming it and its now all over the media. People like to spice things up more than the actual substance seem to be all around the world.

There was literally no reason to publish this video which was of an incident that was completely harmless but, someone thought why not.

3 Aussie players are in the video too, and lets face it, hotel staff could've asked the players to call it a night.

Are people in Australia paid to grass up?

Sounds to me like they had a few drinks at the end of a long series....no big deal here.

Icing on the cake from a shambolic tour, sounds like england were on nothing more then a lads on tour trip to Aus, every team has bubble life and its not easy as same time these players need to prepare for games in right manner, by sounds of reports england have been on a jolly up all series, i doubt results would have been different but the attitude stinks.

Sounds like England of old , a meek coach and captain who struggle to control the team, another reset is definitely required.

In regards to the video seems like someone was having a bit of fun, maybe hotel staff gave a little tip off to police to come and have a "quite word" and give anderson and root a nice final send off.

According to The Telegraph, Thorpe is on the verge of being sacked.

Graham Thorpe, England’s assistant coach, could be under pressure for his job after a video he shot of Tasmanian police shutting down an early hours drinking session involving players from both Ashes teams became public.

Joe Root, the England captain, Jimmy Anderson and Thorpe, as well as Australian players Nathan Lyon, Alex Carey and Travis Head, were the subject of a noise complaint at the team hotel in Hobart at 6am on Monday morning which saw four police officers in attendance.

The incident was filmed by Thorpe and the video first appeared on the website of the Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday. In it an officer is heard telling the group: “Too loud. You have obviously been asked to pack up, so we’ve been asked to come. Time for bed. Thank you. They just want to pack up.”

All five players agreed to the request and left the outdoor terrace for their rooms. The events came after Australia wrapped up a 4-0 series win at 10pm the previous evening, with the usual end of series drinks between the teams in the dressing rooms then moving back to their shared lodgings in Hobart city centre at around 2.30am.

Linda Collis, the general manager of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Hobart, told the Sydney Morning Herald that nothing untoward took place and the complaint – said to be about the volume of the music being played – came from outside of the hotel.

The England management appear to be reasonably sanguine about the drinking given the late finish to the day-night fifth Test at the end of a long series and have issued a public apology for the disturbance that saw the group asked to move on. Cricket Australia have declined to comment on the incident.

But the Guardian understands the England hierarchy are now looking into why Thorpe decided to film the events – naming four of the five players while doing so and saying it was “for the lawyers” – before then seemingly sharing this externally.

An England spokesperson said: “During the early hours of Monday morning, members of the England and Australia men’s teams shared a drink in the team areas of the hotel in Hobart.

“The hotel management received a noise complaint, and as is commonplace in Australia, the local police attended the scene. When asked to leave by hotel management and the Tasmanian police, the players and management in question left and returned to their respective hotel rooms. The England party have apologised for any inconvenience caused.

“The ECB will investigate further. Until such times, we will make no further comment.”

Coming after a heavy series defeat, and with Root, the captain, Chris Silverwood, the head coach, and Ashley Giles, the director of cricket, already under pressure for their jobs following a campaign riddled with strategic errors, the video’s emergence could scarcely be timed worse for England in terms of perception.

Thorpe, the former England batter, has recently been interviewed for the vacant head coach role at Middlesex and so appears to be looking to leave. But after five Tests in which the players failed with the bat, this latest development could now expedite his departure from the international setup.

A statement from Tasmania police read: “Tasmania Police attended the Crowne Plaza Hobart on Monday morning after reports were made of intoxicated people in a function area. The guests were spoken to by police, just after 6am, and left the area when asked. No further action will be taken by police.”

The early finish to the Test match has seen the majority of England’s touring party forced to remain in Hobart while waiting for their scheduled flights home on Wednesday. Australia’s players continued their celebrations at various pubs in Hobart on Monday before returning to their respective states the following day.

Thorpe should be sacked. I don't know what he was thinking - that instead of saying lets wrap it up lads, he decided to film and randomly name check players and mention lawyers.

I will refrain from writing what I think about his actions but he seems the type of person that Inti bhai once referred to :inti

The video is actually quite funny, Joe Root looks like a small child caught misbehaving.

It's 6:30 in the morning. Let's just say that he didn't have full control of his actions after a night out.

The English and alcohol don't mix- anywhere in the world.

Bit of a bad look to be drinking all night after losing in such fashion.

You should attend some sporting event here. By the end of the day, most people can barely stand under the influence of alcohol :))

Having read the Telegraph article, the excuses of Covid lockdown and lack of practise matches doesn’t wash with the TT viewership.

For one the Covid restrictions applied to both teams. Second the practise matches didn’t make a difference in the previous tour where England also lost 4-0.

Team selection and consequently the loss of trust with senior management are primarily to blame. Silverwood is clearly at the crux of this, and he either needs to go, or be relived of selection duties.

It is very clear there’s a clash between Root and Silverwood when it came to team selection. Broad missing from Tests 1 and 3 on green top wickets is a clear indication of this, along with the excuse for his absence down to ‘great bowling options’ - signs all is not well behind the scenes.

The video is a must. When police are involved, arrest is a possibility, lawyers then get involved, at which point any evidence is crucial. Thorpe did the right thing.

So turns out the hotel manager confirmed the complaint was in reference to music, rather than rowdy behaviour from the players.

Also 2:30 am? Jokes aside, that’s when a party really kicks in!

I think this issue has been blown out of proportion and frankly speaking aimed at humiliating the English players. Root and Jimmy are as sound and clean as you can get. Looking at the video, the Aussie players seemed relax too.

ECB should black-list this hotel going forwards.

They look so well-behaved, especially Root :))).

I loved the slurred "No worries, we can go" by Lyon?

Such an agreeable bunch. This brings back bad memories of several occasions when neighboring tables have been told to pipe down. Indians seem way more uncouth and violent compared to international Australian and English players.

Looking at the video again Thorpe seems like the most childish one out of them all with his commentary and name dropping, he has form for issues with drinking so wouldn't be surprised if this is his final straw, talk of him joining middlesex will probably accelerate as a result.

It's not a party but a work event! (official ECB statement with support from the current Tory administration)

A shambolic tour of Australia with behind the scenes antics that need investigating ?

There's only one man for the job :inti

He’s certainly not teaching them to bat…..

At this level a coach doesn’t teach a player to bat and ball. This stuff is learned before joining the Test team. If a coach is teaching a player how to bat and ball, then said player is not ready for Test level.

You only need to look at previous head coaches to see this.

Isn't this like a tradition where both team players get together for a drink post Ashes? So yeah they were a bit loud, cut them some slack.

Tbh on twitter and reddit I actually see English fans aren't too fussed about this but obviously UK tabloid media is going to make this sensational and mix it up with Ashes 4-0 loss.

Feel bad for Root. He does everything he can, can't have a bit off a cool down either.

The hotel manager has confirmed the noise was due to Music played OUTSIDE of the hotel ground.

Moeen would have been valuable in this scenario to guide the stray England team to the straight path.

Unfortunately, England lack spirituality and it really shows.

Only cowards drink the way they do and they deserved to lose.

I hope the tiny population who gives a crap about cricket as a ‘sport’ egg them at arrivals.

is it a tradition to drink heavily all tour, have poor fitness and also poor team culture likes most reports are indicating for this tour?

Tbh drinking culture in the UK is a national disgrace. Root needs to be sacked and possibly dropped. Clearly not too bothered about the humiliation.

A team that has lost the last 13 test matches in Australia in humiliating circumstances should not be boozing with the opposition. I hope the ECB takes action and actually selects players that are hungry for success and eager to do well. To many of the players in the England team are too well established and have the attitude that we have done it all, there is nothing more to really achieve.

Oh for goodness sakes, it’s sport not war. Sad old world if you can’t have a pint or two with the oppo after a series ends.

I played club cricket for quite a few years and for some of the boys the food and the after match drinks were the most important things.

That sounds like the England set-up at the moment.

Please read the articles out there. This was not just the odd drinks with the opposition after the series. This has been the culture with this English team for a while now.

How many of these guys have even spent significant time at the academy, I bet I have more then them during leisure. They have absolute elite / world class facilities and access to the best sports scientists in the world, there is no excuse

LOL I use to be like that for every friendly in Handsworth, wings and fries during the interval :afridi KingKhanWC

A shame the international team is behaving the same way :yk2

We need more good practicing Muslims in the team to get rid of the lad culture (similar to Morgan’s England). Alcohol is not good for you, let alone an elite sportsman.

Graham Thorpe’s position as England assistant coach looks untenable after police were called to the team hotel in Hobart because he was smoking a cigar inside the premises during a drinking session that lasted until 6am.

I have zero problem players had a big night after an Ashes series of being confined to various levels of covid bubbles.

I have zero problem with their behaviour- they were polite & left as soon as police asked.

Reading between the lines they were getting in the way of staff trying to set up for hotel breakfast/days functions and had probably been ignoring staff requests for a while.

At some point the duty manager needs to make sure players are not drinking and smoking in areas not authorised to do so when other patrons start coming down for breakfast though, so quietly called police to make sure players didn't blame the staff.

If Thorpey posted/leaked it though then he'll take the fall. The entire coaching staff surely facing the sack anyway. And his efforts as batting coach don't seem to have been very effective.

We need more good practicing Muslims in the team to get rid of the lad culture (similar to Morgan’s England). Alcohol is not good for you, let alone an elite sportsman. Do you think guys like Kohli got to the level he’s at by having a pint or two and thinking it’s sport not war :yk2 no wonder these mental midgets were slaughtered

Don't know why you mentioned practicing muslims, they have a worse record than England.

Don’t think it’s fair to towards somebody faith/religion, to make that a issue here, rather it’s about self discipline.

To become one of the elite sportsmen you have to sacrifice the lures of life.

Alcohol and Smoking are two parts which hinder performance massively.

It is understood that Thorpe filmed the incident and sent it on to friends. It was then circulated more widely and ended up in the hands of the Australia media.

The Ashes: ECB investigating reports England coach Graham Thorpe was smoking a cigar inside team hotel

ECB investigating newspaper reports that batting coach Graham Thorpe was smoking a cigar inside team hotel in Hobart which led to police being called; ECB apologised on Tuesday for a "noise complaint" as some England and Australian players drank together after fifth Ashes Test

The England and Wales Cricket Board is investigating reports that assistant coach Graham Thorpe was smoking a cigar indoors at the team hotel in Hobart, before police were called to intervene.

The ECB apologised on Tuesday and said it would investigate after police attended the hotel in the early hours of Monday morning, with complaints initially understood to have been made due to noise.

Players and staff from both sides got together on Sunday night following Australia's 4-0 Ashes win, which was confirmed when they thrashed England by 146 runs on day three of the final Test.

A video clip, which is understood to have been filmed by Thorpe, emerged appearing to show England captain Joe Root, bowler James Anderson and Australia trio Nathan Lyon, Alex Carey and Travis Head sitting quietly at a table filled with beer bottles.

The group dispersed when told to do so and no further action will be taken by local police.

An ECB spokesperson said on Tuesday: "During the early hours of Monday morning, members of the England and Australia men's teams shared a drink in the team areas of the hotel in Hobart.

"The ECB will investigate further. Until such times, we will make no further comment."

A statement from the local authorities said: "Tasmania Police attended the Crowne Plaza Hobart on Monday morning after reports were made of intoxicated people in a function area.

"The guests were spoken to by police just after 6:00am and left the area when asked. No further action will be taken by police."

In the footage, one of the police officers is heard to say "you're too loud, you've obviously been asked to pack up" and "time for bed".

England's men's squad will fly home from Australia this week after a chastening Ashes series, which saw them lose heavily in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart and only avoid a 5-0 defeat by clinging on for a draw on the final day of the fourth Test in Sydney.

England Women all-rounder Nat Sciver was asked about the emergence of the video during a pre-series press conference ahead of the Women's Ashes, which starts in Adelaide on Thursday.

"I've got no idea what [England men's] rules are that they've been living under and what they need to do to go home," said Sciver.

"If one of them got Covid and then had to stay here for 10 days, then that would be a nightmare and maybe something that shouldn't have happened. Everyone likes to have a drink at the end of a tour - maybe in a better setting would have been better, I don't know.

"In days gone by, when there wasn't Covid, players from different teams would enjoy a drink at the end of a tour and it would be a fairly normal scene, so it's a hard one."

Sure. Fred Trueman was England’s best ever fast bowler who loved a pint or two. Lillee was famous for his Bundaberg Rum and ginger. Sobers stayed out all night drinking and hit 150 against Snow and Underwood on no sleep.

In 1974, Gordon Greenidge scored his highest first class score of 273 not out at Eastbourne for Derrick Robin's XI against the Pakistani side who were touring England that year. He said that he had drunk too much lager the night before and had woken up with "the most dreadful hangover". He did not recollect the innings saying "I middled every ball and yet hardly saw one delivery clearly...I can't remember a single shot but when I returned to the pavilion rather later than I had anticipated, I discovered I had made 273 not out". He hit 13 sixes and 31 fours in the innings.

If you’re good enough then you’re good enough…

Also not cricket related but the ex Arsenal & England captain Tony Adams is a recovering alcoholic and he used to regularly turn up drunk on matchday.

Strange behaviour from him. Definitely a sackable offence. Wonder if he is sort of inviting it and goading it because he knows he will lose his job as batting coach anyway.

No great issue with the boys having a few drinks together after a long series, in fact it shows how many of the English and Aussie players are actually just mates at the end of the day & I quite like that.

If I was an England fan I wouldn't mind players drinking after the series.

I'd probably not want my skipper and batting coach to be amongst the last 2 standing though, especially after getting beaten so badly.

It might be used as an excuse to remove Root from captaincy without having to cite purely the results under his tenure. They did a similar thing with Flintoff after PedaloGate.

Agree. Nothing wrong with rivalries sharing company AFTER the series, but Thorpe, if allegations true, has to go. What happens on the field stays on the field, in the same way what happens on tour, stays on tour.

Fred Trueman Ah yes, that famous club level cricketer. 150 against a pair of bums while drunk says it all really. Lillee was also famous for his endurance, heart and courage in asian conditions, especially Pakistan.

Are they though, I don’t recall seeing 11 beards on the field ? England should have taken advantage of the 1, and his leadership qualities.
