Glamorgan have confirmed their interest in signing Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman for the opening stages of the T20 Blast.

The move follows the injury to Australia's Shaun Marsh who is currently out with a broken arm suffered in the nets.

His brother, all-rounder Mitch Marsh, is currently due to join the county after the first four games.

Fakhar has won 30 T20 caps for Pakistan.

The 29 year-old left-hander has been a regular for Pakistan in the World Cup with a top score of 62 against India, taking his tally to 44 appearances in the international 50-overs format.

Glamorgan begin their Blast campaign at home to Somerset on Thursday 18 July.

Their current overseas player, Australia's Marnus Labuschagne, is due to leave at the end of the current Championship match against Middlesex because of Australian squad commitments.

Good luck. I hope you improve Fakhar. Score at least a few hundreds. You cost Pak the World Cup with your mediocrity and brainless shot selection.

Finch, Roy, Sharma, Bairstow, Warner. It was an openers’ WC and you just occupied a place. Scored 1 fifty that too in the loss against India.
 
It would be an interesting move for Fakhar. He would instantly be relied on heavily for run scoring and senior leadership and could regain his confidence. He would be the only non-white player in the squad currently (although Khawaja seemed to enjoy himself recently). He might even learn a thing or two from Colin Ingram.

He is scheduled to make his debut as Glamorgan begin their Blast campaign at home to Somerset on Thursday 18 July provided he arrives in time.

"Fakhar Zahman has signed up and agreed the contract," said head coach Maynard.

"We are hopeful he will play against Somerset. It is whether the visa comes through in time and he gets on the flight and is here for Thursday.

"We will have to monitor when he arrives and see how he is feeling."

Their current overseas player, Marnus Labuschagne, is due to leave at the end of the Championship match against Middlesex because of Australian squad commitments.

Glamorgan are waiting to see whether Mitchell Marsh is named in the Australia squad for the Ashes which would rule him out of joining up at Sophia Gardens.

"It is a bit watch this space with Mitch," said Glamorgan director of cricket Mark Wallace.

"When we signed him a few months ago he was quite a way from the Ashes squad.

"His stock has risen over the last few weeks and he has got a good chance to be in that squad now.

"If that comes about we will have to have a look at what our options are."

How come the likes of david warner,steve smith and mohammad amir were allowed to play and dont let me even mention wasim aqram and waqar younis.If he had the talent and can have a good domestic season or if sharjeel can give us a glimpse that he is the same player he was before ,he should definitely be in the squad.
 
Slightly surprised given that he he was terrible at the World Cup.

But it's a fresh chance, a new opportunity.
 
He needs to learn how to occupy the crease despite his limited technique. I'm not saying him to tuk tuk but you can't create much impact in ODIs if you are playing less than 10 overs.
 
Glad this has happened. Would do good if he can find form, his first match would be against Somerset, who of course, Babar Azam plays for!
 
Hopefully his NOC doesn't get revoked this time around again like it did in 2017.

does NOT go same for Hassan Ali.... I seriously doubt Hasan Ali has any brains or comitment to improve on his game.. the man thinks he is Malcolm Marshal who has taken 400+ test wickets and 500+ ODI wickets. his attitude is "just dont care" ... pratically Umar Akmal of bowling... he needs to be dumped for atleast 2/3 years.... with Aamir / SSA / Wahab we have a good trio of seamers and i would rather have Hussnain, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Shinwari and Musa as the 4/5 bowler to get a match initially to gain experience and broaden their skills... Hasan Ali for me was finished as a cricketer when he played that stupid shot vs WI with 35+ overs and a batsmen on the other end.. his commitment for the team is 0
 
Even Glamorgan people did not watch the world cup, or they might not have seen Fakhar's batting during WC.
 
Fakhar Zaman did not play today for Glamorgan. The game with Gloucestershire being washed out. The score was Glamorgan: 96/8
 
Glamorgan are hopeful overseas signing Fakhar Zaman will be available for their next T20 Blast match after missing the opening two games.

The Pakistan opening batsman was signed for the first eight matches of the tournament as cover for the injured Shaun Marsh.

Fakhar missed the opening two games because his visa has been delayed.

In his absence Glamorgan lost against Somerset and were saved by the rain against Gloucestershire in a draw.

"The director of cricket (Mark Wallace) is on the case today to try and get the visa sorted as quickly as possible," said head coach Matthew Maynard.

"We will plan to play without him but if he becomes available it will be a bonus."

Glamorgan face Surrey in their next game at the Oval on Thursday, 25 July.

The Welsh county have faced their first two T20 matches without an official overseas player, with Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh set to link up with them after the opening four games.

Glamorgan were saved from a second successive defeat by rain against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham on Friday.

After an opening defeat against Somerset, Glamorgan struggled to 96-8 after 15.3 overs before the match was abandoned.

Gloucestershire medium-pacer Benny Howell took career-best T20 figures of 5-18 and his side were denied chasing a modest total by a torrential downpour at the College Ground.

Glamorgan's top-scorer was David Lloyd with 21 off 20 balls.

"You need a bit of luck in these competitions and we have got away with one," Maynard added.

"We have had that lucky break against Gloucestershire. We have got a point so we will take that."

Glamorgan CC have told us that they are still waiting on Fakhar Zaman's Visa and everything else is in place. Hopefully Fakhar will be in England for Thursday.
 
IT’S AN HONOUR TO JOIN GLAMORGAN - ZAMAN

Overseas signing Fakhar Zaman has landed in Wales and spoken of his delight at being able to play county cricket and join Glamorgan.

The Pakistan international signed for Glamorgan’s first eight matches in the Vitality Blast following Pakistan’s World Cup campaign. He was unable to play the opening two fixtures due to visa delays but is now due to make his debut for the Welsh county tomorrow against Surrey at the Kia Oval.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to play County cricket and it’s an honour to join Glamorgan and be able to play in play where I have so many fond memories.
“After the World Cup I got a call from my agent about joining Glamorgan and without any hesitation I said I would love to play.

He is likely to make his home debut on Friday night when Glamorgan face Middlesex and already has a good record in Cardiff having been part of the Pakistan team which upset England in the Champions Trophy semi-final.

“The 2017 Champions Trophy was my first tour with Pakistan and we played two matches here. I remember the semi-final against England very well. We won the game and I scored a fifty so I have some good memories.”

The big-hitting opening batsman has played against a number of Glamorgan players, including captain Colin Ingram and has kept a close eye on results since his signing was announced.

“I know Colin Ingram very well, from the PSL and I also played against some of the guys in 2016.

“Since I signed for Glamorgan, I’ve followed how they’ve got on and there are a few guys here playing really good cricket and I’m looking forward to joining the side.”

Fakhar Zaman needed this, Props to his agency team for getting this sorted out and good on Fakhar to have the motivation of carrying on playing and not taking a holiday.

Got a feeling he won't do too bad either.

After arriving in Cardiff more than a week after signing for Glamorgan, Pakistani batsman Fakhar Zaman is looking forward to reacquainting himself with the Sophia Gardens ground where he has a number of memorable performances.

The 29-year-old left-hand opening batsman arrives in Cardiff on the back of two top-scoring performances elsewhere in the World Cup, with knocks of 62 against India and 44 against South Africa. His last appearance at Cardiff came in May in a one-off IT20 match.

After a conversation with Pakistan national coach Mickey Arthur, he was convinced that a return to Cardiff with Glamorgan was the right move.

“I had a call from my agent after the World Cup, who said that Glamorgan wanted to sign me,” he said.

“Mickey Arthur also spoke to me about it, and I said that I would love to play for Glamorgan. I signed without any hesitation.

“I don’t know much about Cardiff, but I played a few matches here in the Champions Trophy in 2017, so I have good memories at this ground.”

In those two matches, he scored 50 against Sri Lanka and followed it up with 57 against England in the semi-final.

“Glamorgan is a very historic county, and I have so many good memories of playing at the Cardiff ground,” he said.

“County cricket is so different from other leagues. There’s so much history in it, so I like it.”

Fakhar initially signed for Glamorgan’s first eight matches in the Vitality Blast but visa issues have seen him miss the first two matches, the defeat to Somerset in Cardiff and a no result against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham.

Now that he has arrived, he says he is looking forward to getting started.

“I’m very happy to be part of Glamorgan County Cricket Club,” he said.

“I was looking to play county cricket and I got this opportunity, and I would like to make it memorable. I was having visa problems, but thanks to PCB [Pakistan Cricket Board], they helped me out to get my visa quickly. Now I’m here and I’m looking forward to it.”

Fakhar has been named in the squad for the match against Surrey on Thursday (July 25) at The Kia Oval, where the Welsh county have an impressive record in T20 cricket, with six wins and a no result in their previous seven matches there, including a run of five victories on the bounce.

A day later, he is expected to make his home debut at Cardiff against Middlesex. Despite the first two results in this season’s competition, he says that Glamorgan’s record at the Oval is cause for optimism.

“I’ve been following Glamorgan and they’re playing good cricket, so everybody is confident that we’ll be good and win the game,” he said.

“I will obviously bat in the top order, but I haven’t spoken to anybody yet because I only arrived in the morning.

“First of all, we’re focussing on the Surrey game and yes, of course, we’re also planning for the Middlesex game. Hopefully it will go very well for us.”

Fakhar will wear shirt number 39, which he chose himself on arrival in Cardiff.

“I was in the Navy in Pakistan in 2007, and my room number was 39,” he said. “I received three or four numbers and was told I should choose one of them, so that’s the number I chose.”

Fakhar did well against a Gloucester attack which decimated Glamorgan not so long ago. Watching him at the ground it looks like he has developed a decent rapport with Ingram. However after doing all the hard work and seeing off the likes of Payne and Tye impressively he could have done better than to get out to a dibly dobbler like Higgins through poor shot selection.

Good test for him coming up against Hampshire tonight, lets see if he can carry some momentum against a decent attack featuring a mixture of pace and spin in the form of abbott, crane, dawson.

Makes my blood boil tbf, he was clearly going the NasirJ amshed way last year but now a year later he has surpassed Nasir Jamshed in mediocrity.

Except for the fact Nasir Jamshed never had the domestic track record Fakhar has.

It's been a bad year for him and sometimes that happens in cricket. You go through peaks and valley's but maybe let's not overreact on some T20 performance in a bunch of meaningless matches.

He'll be just fine.
 
i dont think he will ne his technique is more of a a gulli danda technique ..he might need to retire soon for sake of pak cricket
 
One poor season shouldnt call for discarding a player one has invested in. Even all the greats have poor years in their careers. Fakhar needs to be persisted for another season by Pak and can be benched if he is out of form however if he doesnt show much consistency this season as well then some other player can ben given a chance.

Its not like many aggressive openers are knocking the door. If people here prefer Khurram Mansoor, Sahibzada Farhan etc over him then thats another matter. Shan Masood is also one dimensional player and would make our top 3 too monotonous.

While Ahmed Shehzad looked pretty decent in PSL and Ahsan Ali also showed some potential but I am pretty sure most people will bash them as well after failiures as people are bashing Fakhar

If there are some other better options it would be great to here those.
 
Inzamam in year 1996: 25.15 AVG, 76.79 SR in 23 ODI matches (only 2 half centuries).
in year 2002: 28.57 AVG, SR 67.30 in 29 ODI matches (4 half centuries).

Every player goes through down years. In the end, it's all about adjustments and thats what successful player can do. We'll see if Fakhar can do that but I am pretty confident that he will.
 
So the hack has been found out even by club teams?

I like hacks in LOIs - but the kind of hacks who can adapt and improvise. He can't do any of that. Same hacking as he started, no improvement.

He's a useless and predictable hack.
 
Fully agree that we need to stick with him for a bit longer. He has played an important part for why we've finally started to make more 300+ scores. He needs to be backed and hopefully he'll come good

Imagine comparing Inzi with Fakhar. Inzi was a top batsman for us, whereas Fakhar is a complete hack. When a batsman like Inzi goes through a period of not scoring runs, you can put it down to him being in poor form, but you still back him because you know he is a top batsman. But what a player like Fakhar goes through a period of not scoring runs, it isn't a case of him being in poor form, but rather a case of a limited batsman who has been exposed for his many weaknesses. That is the case with Fakhar and he isn't turning this around. He should be dropped asap.
 
I am running out of excuses for him, but I still can’t help but have a good feeling about him.

I believe he has something that Jamshed, Shahzad and even Sharjeel lack which is good batting temperament. He has been the most important batsmen in our white ball lineup for a couple of years now, even ahead of Babar. (Not saying he’s the best, but the batsmen most likely to win us a game).

He is lucky that Pakistan lack dynamic openers and his overall numbers should give him some breathing space to regain some form.

Inzi wasn't getting out to the same shot every other game though, the difference is there for the world to see.
