Dean Jones has died in Mumbai from a cardiac arrest.

Former Australia cricketer Dean Jones passed away in Mumbai on Friday following a cardiac arrest, at the age of 59. He played 52 Tests and scored 3631 runs including 11 centuries, and featured in 164 one-dayers, racking up 6063 runs, seven centuries and 46 fifties. Jones was in Mumbai as part of IPL official broadcaster's commentary panel.

He was particularly renowned for his gutsy 210 in the tied Test in Madras in 1986-87, after which he ended up in hospital on a saline drip. Battling through extreme fatigue in energy-sapping conditions, he felt dizzy and vomited, but refused to give in.

"It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr. Dean Mervyn Jones AM. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time. We are in touch with the Australian High Commission to make the necessary arrangements," Star India said in a statement.

This is sad. Huge loss. I loved this guy. I wanted him to work with us, and i felt he was going to, but God had other plans.
Such a bundle of positive energy he was.
 
Shocking. Was commentating on the IPL. Watched him yesterday on IPL selec dug out.

What! I’m shocked beyond words. How did it happen? Just yesterday I was devastated at the death of former wrestler Road Warrior Animal, and today this.

He will be sorely missed, especially by Pakistan fans. I will always have great memories of him as a commentator and PSL coach.

I heard he was a dynamic batsman and with his stellar record, I'm sure he was a delightful cricketer to watch.

I heard him commentating just last night!
 
Despite not being Pakistan coach, he had great influence on Pakistan cricket through PSL. He was a great supporter of the country and its people. Always thought PCB missed a trick not using him more - despite him showing what he could do as coach.

A great, modern ODI player too - someone who changed white ball cricket. And his dogged 200 in India is one of the all time great innings.

A through and through Aussie gentlman.

May you rest in peace Dean Jones.
 
Shocking, awful news.

His twin centuries v Wasim, Imran and Mushtaq at Adelaide in 1989-90 were the height of batsmanship.
 
Shocked to hear this. Wished for him to be Pakistan's coach one day, rest in peace, legend. Life is truly unpredictable..
 
Shocking news man. Guy was young. He had done alot of services for pakistan crcket.
Wish he had been our head coach aswell.

Our psl will not be the same without this guy. He was not anpakistani but still i believe he is a big loss for pakistan. Having in as our comentator and coaches it felt like he was one of our own
 
He has had a huge influence on PSL. Two titles and could have had a third one this year.

This year’s edition has lost momentum and people are not really bothered about the outcome of the remaining matches, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give KK the trophy in honor of Dean Jones, making him a 3 time PSL winner.

However, it is highly unlikely to happen now because PCB have already announced the remaining matches.
 
The rumours are already starting that jt may be covid related. Hope people will give him the respect he deserves in death and wait until it is confirmed what happened before speculating.
 
Absolutely gutted. Was a fantastic coach in PSL and I really liked him . Very sad to hear

Cricket Australia is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dean Jones at the age of 59.

Jones represented Australia in 52 Tests and 164 One-Day Internationals and won admirers the world over with his dashing shot-making and superb fielding.

He was also a stalwart of Victorian cricket during the 1980s and 1990s and retired as the state’s leading first-class run-scorer.

Jones went on to become a highly-regarded coach and commentator. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2006 for his services to cricket and charity and was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2019.

Earl Eddings, Chair of Cricket Australia, said Jones would be sorely missed by cricket fans around the world.

“Dean Jones was a hero to a generation of cricketers and will forever be remembered as a legend of this great game,” Eddings said.

"Anyone who watched cricket in the 1980s and 1990s will fondly recall his cavalier approach at the crease and the incredible energy and passion he brought to every game he played.

“Although many remember him for his brilliance in the 50-over game, arguably Jones’ finest moment in the national team came in scorching conditions in Chennai in 1986, where his selfless and courageous innings of 210 helped Australia to a famous tie against India.

“Jones remained an immensely popular figure in Australian and Victorian cricket throughout his life and was a much-loved columnist and commentator in every corner of the cricketing world.

“This is a truly sad day. Deano’s loss will be felt not just at home in Australia, but across the globe. Our thoughts and best wishes are with his wife Jane and daughters Isabella and Phoebe.”

Shocking news. I still can’t believe this - age of 59 for a pro sportsman ..... it only tells how little time we all have - death is ultimate destiny.

Shocking news. RIP. Contributed to Pakistan cricket with success in the PSL and also was a very good batsmen.
 
He was a guy who made fans and friends everywhere. A terrific character. Brought so much to the game and as a commentator, he was brilliant.
Everything about him was so full of life and positive. I cant express how sad I feel. It is as if a very close friend has died.

This news has shaken me more than I would imagined. Dean Jones turned every commentary box and analysis studio into a fun place wherever he went.

Not to mention he was one of the best ODI batsmen of all time.

He will be missed.

A brilliant, dynamic and positive batsmen that was Australia's best batsmen in a WC winning team. His 210 vs India is one of the great innings, courageous. The story with him and Border is iconic

An analytical commentator not afraid to say what he thought, so much of a contrast from some of the PR machines around today.

He will be missed
 
People should look up Ken Wadsworth. One minute he was NZ’s Test keeper - the next he was dead!

This death feels like that did.

The community lost a true solider of the game passionately in love with the sport he both played and later went on to commentate on as well as coach; while the Karachi Kings have lost their guide, friend and motivator through the ordeals of the game both on and off the field.

Professor Deano, or just Deano to most who knew him, a World Cup winner, strong advocate of player’s rights and game development, extraordinary game commentator, avid golfer, champion coach, and a loving, committed family man, has left behind a void that will be impossible to ever fill. Even though he joined the Karachi Kings family just a year ago, he embodied the fighting spirit and pursuit of excellence this team stands for, quickly becomingthe bedrock of the values each member of the Karachi Kings family aspired to.

Deano is survived by his wife, Jane and two daughters, Isabella and Pheobe - and the whole Karachi Kings family. You will be missed, Coach!

Shocking news, I still cannot believe it... Great batsman, and one of the modern day ODI player back in his playing days...RIP Deano, cricket world will miss him for sure..

Deano was a true legend of Australian sport and world cricket, one of the great players and personalities in a golden time for the game. His role in the team’s World Cup win in 1987 and the 1989 Ashes under AB were a huge turning point for Australian cricket.

His double century in Madras was one of the greatest and most courageous innings of all time.

We can only hope to make Australians as proud of our team as they were of Deano, he will be missed by the game and millions of people around the world. Our love to Jane and the girls.

Australian cricket legend Dean Jones has died aged 59 in a shocking sudden death that has rocked the cricket world.

Jones was only 59 when he passed away in Mumbai with the news of his death sending shockwaves across the globe.

The Australian cricket legend was in India working in the commentary booth for the IPL. He collapsed in a Mumbai hotel where fellow former cricketer Brett Lee was on the scene and performed CPR. He is understood to have collapsed around 7pm (AEST), according to The Australian.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr. Dean Mervyn Jones AM,” said Star India, who Jones was a commentator for, in a statement.

“He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time. We are in touch with the Australian High Commission to make the necessary arrangements.

“Dean Jones was one of the great ambassadors of the game associating himself with cricket development across South Asia. He was passionate about discovering new talent and nurturing young cricketers.

“He was a champion commentator whose presence and presentation of the game always brought joy to millions of fans. He will be sorely missed by everyone at Star and his millions of fans across the globe.”

Cricket Australia released a statement on Thursday evening expressing the sadness being felt right across the cricket world.

“Cricket Australia is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dean Jones at the age of 59.

Shocking news. A great former cricketer. Really appreciated his contributions to Pakistan cricket, especially in the PSL. Coached Islamabad United to the title twice. I was looking forward to his return for the remaining games of PSL 2020 as KK's coach and seeing how far he could take them. RIP Deano
 
I am shocked.......its an unbelievable news....

I am saddened to hear this news. I was a genuine fan of this guy.

He was among the greatest ODi batsmen. At one point of time in the early 90s, he was averaging almost 50 with the strike rate of 76.
An aggressive player who remained icc no.1 batsman for some time. I still have the memories of him coming down the track to spinners and hit a four towards midwicket.

His services for PSL should also be remembered always.

He was the most successful coach of PSL. He joined it and came to Pakistan when most of the others were reluctant.

Dean Jones sitting in the dugout in a suit with red (later blue) notebook in his hand will remain as a memory in mind.

I wanted him to be a coach of Pakistani young team once Misbah goes, especially in ODis. I think he himself was still interested as few months ago he suggested Pakistan to have different coaches for test & ODis.

My sincere condolences to his family. A sad loss of cricket and its fans.

Shocked!!!!! Was my fav Australasian player. He was king in one day cricket. Meet him as a child in Sharjah once . Condolences to the family.
 
RIP Dean Jones. His 100 vs Pakistan in Perth 1987 was the first aggressive piece of batting I saw as a child.
 
Who can forget his gutsy inning in that tied test in Chennai. He was throwing up and peeing on himself, but still had the guts to carry on. Gone too soon. 2020 keeps getting worse.

Awful news to wake up to. He was such a energetic commentator, good coach. I really wanted him to coach the Pakistan team. Just a couple of days ago I was seeing him tweet stuff :(
 
From a more philosophical perspective, how unpredictable is life?. Just few days back he looked perfectly normal and his usual energetic self. To pass away just a few days later and that too from natural causes, This is what makes life so much unpredictable.

Once again very shocking and condolences to his family and a great loss to cricket.
