People who lay even a finger on a child should to be beaten black and blue.
That pathetic guy in uniform grabbed that innocent child by her hair right in front of her family. Can you believe it. This is pure abuse of power. That guy should be sent to jail grabbed by his hair.

Before that he needs to be beaten to a bloody pulp. I absolutely hate people who bully or hit children. It's just sad that hitting children is seen as no serious stuff in India and Pakistan.

Yesterday at night during Eid I saw a couple policemen camping on top of a bridge with pistols not hoisted, but firmly in their hands. Stopping traffic and waving the gun like a hand a wave towards bikes with men and kids only. Taking them to the side. For probably Eidi (bribery).

I have no respect for these authority figures here.

What an idiot. Not only did he push away the little girl, but also ended the happiness she had for seeing her beloved ones. Heartbreaking.

This is the problem in Pakistan that anyone who gets a little authority tends to exceed their limits.

Cop who thrashed woman on train in viral video cleared of mysterious death — Pakistan Railways

A policeman, who was allegedly seen beating a woman on a train last week in videos that have since gone viral, has been cleared of her mysterious death, a Pakistan Railways spokesperson said on Monday about the latest incident in what rights activists say is a long series of episodes of police brutality in Pakistan.

Maryam Bibi, who worked as a beautician in Karachi, left the southern port city to spend last week’s Eid holiday with her family in Jaranwala in the Punjab province via Millat Express on April 7. During the journey, the woman was subjected to torture by Constable Mir Hasan near Hyderabad, according to a video of the incident and media reports. Two days later, her body was discovered near the Chani Goth railway station in Punjab.

She was subsequently buried by her family who initially thought she died after falling off the train in an accident, but the video of her torture forced railways authorities to set up a fact-finding committee to investigate the death.

The committee concluded that Constable Mir Hasan was present in Hyderabad at the time of the incident and not involved in the murder, according to Pakistan Railways spokesperson Babar Raza.

An earlier press release by Railways said the police constable got involved after Maryam started scattering the belongings of other passengers and that the policeman was forced to move her to another compartment. Railways said he was on duty on the train from Karachi to Hyderabad, in Sindh province, while the woman’s body was later found in Punjab. The press release said she had jumped from the moving train near Channigoth station.

“The call record, station attendance, and witnesses’ testimony confirmed that the constable was in Hyderabad when the woman fell or jumped from the train, and her body was found in the Multan division,” Raza told Arab News.

The Railways’ earlier press release said the policeman was arrested once the video of him allegedly beating up the woman was posted online. He has been suspended from duty and was out on bail in the Hyderabad area.

On Monday, Pakistani media widely reported the victim’s nephew as saying the constable had objected to the woman reciting verses from the Holy Qur’an out aloud and subsequently beat her. The nephew alleged that the constable forcibly took the woman with him and pushed her from the train at the next station.

Amnesty International’s National Corruption Impact Assessment Report released last year said the police department was among the most corrupt in Pakistan, with a staggering 30 percent corruption rate. Rights bodies over the years have documented hundreds of cases of police brutality, especially police heavy handedness against political and civil rights protesters.

The videos of the camel in excruciating pain are hard to watch. Also, how pathetic is it that the FIR is against an “unknown person” ? There is no such thing as justice, the police know who the wadera is but of course even if he chopped off the leg of a human they wouldn’t do anything.

The sad thing is not how the police behaved , the sad thing is that people around did not respond. Unfortunately , we have regressed in our morality and have become so much selfish and engrossed in our lives that we do not bother about what is happening around.

I know people will mock both you and me since we both are non vegetarians. But there's a difference in killing an animal for food as against what the sick psychopath did. All I can say is that such demented and twisted people need help, they need treatment.

And yes, I saw the video of the camel screaming in excruciating pain.

This is just a camel. These wadera kill humans and get away with it. There is the murder of Nazim Jhokio by a sitting member of parliament. He was never punished, so no chance anything happens to this person.

Cant blame the police. The wadera might kill there family. Plus if they are ever pressured to do something against the wadera, they will threaten the family and get a "pardon" using Islamic law (diyat, "blood money")

Sindh government to pay for mutilated camel’s prosthetic leg, says CM

Secretary of Livestock Kazim Jatoi visited the Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) animal shelter in Karachi on Monday following the instructions of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

This visit came a day after a magistrate in Shahdadpur remanded six suspects into police custody in connection with the recent mutilation of a camel, which had its right leg chopped off in Mund Jamrao village in Sanghar district.

Following the chief minister’s orders, Secretary Jatoi also arranged for an injured donkey to be transported to Karachi. Both wounded animals are currently receiving treatment at the CDRS.

The Sindh government has committed to covering the cost of treatment for both animals and the CM stated that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is arranging a prosthetic leg for the camel from Dubai.

Secretary Jatoi added that the camel’s leg is healing. He also mentioned that the injured donkey’s leg will be x-rayed tomorrow to determine the next steps in its treatment.

‘Punishment’
The camel was wounded on Friday when a landlord allegedly chopped off its leg as punishment for foraging into his field for fodder.

Sanghar police took notice of the incident, news of which was widely circulated on social media, and contacted the owner of the brutalised camel, Soomar Behan, who was a poor peasant.

Police officials said the peasant had refused to identify the culprit and press charges against him, hence police lodged an FIR on behalf of the state against six unknown persons under sections 429 (Mischief by killing or maiming cattle) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

When police tried to arrest the six suspects on Saturday, they allegedly resisted and attacked them, according to another FIR filed by police. The six suspects were identified as Rustam Shar, Abid Shar, Jaffar Jatt, Abdul Shakoor Shar, Gul Baig Lashari and Darya Khan Shar, and were arrested near Sanghar.

According to Sub-Inspector Atta Hussain Jutt, the suspects were presented before duty magistrate Asif Sial on Sunday, where police requested the suspects be remanded for 14 days for further investigation, positing that they needed to find the weapon used in the incident.

The magistrate, however, remanded the suspects to police custody for only four days.

Notice and treatment
PPP minister Shazia Marri and former PPP senator Quratulain Marri took stern notice of the camel mutilation incident. In a joint statement, they said that veterinary doctors referred them to CDRS, and rescuing the camel was a “joint effort.”

CDRS Benji Director Sarah Jahangir told Dawn.com previously that the camel, affectionately named Cammie by shelter staff, is stable but infection is a constant threat. “She’s stable but her leg is infected,” she said.

“Treatment involves applying fresh dressings, antibiotics and IV fluids […] we’re trying to keep infection at bay.”

Sarah confirmed that the PPP senior members arranged the wounded animal’s transport to the shelter. “Shazia and Anny (Quratulain) Marri had the camel loaded into a truck and brought to Karachi with a police protocol,” she said, adding that the animal arrived at 2:00am in excruciating agony.

She added that CDRS has been exploring options for prosthetic legs for the camel and is due to meet experts from both Karachi and Dubai.

Soomer Faqeer, the owner of the camel whose leg was chopped off in Sanghar district, accused the police of protecting landlord Ghulam Rasool Shar which he claimed was the ‘real culprit’ of the incident

The incident took place on June 14 when a landlord in Mund Jamrao village in Sanghar district allegedly chopped off the camel’s leg as punishment for entering his agriculture land for fodder.

Soomer Faqeer narrated the incident along with his camel at Sanghar press club. “I have no enmity with anyone. I don’t know why this was done to my camel,” he said.

Earlier, the police said the peasant had refused to identify the culprit and press charges against him, hence police lodged an FIR on behalf of the state against unknown persons under sections 429 and 34 PPC.

The police also arrested six suspects – identified as Rustam Shar, Abid Shar, Jaffar Jatt, Abdul Shakoor Shar, Gul Baig Lashari and Darya Khan Shar – from Rantoo Bridge near Sanghar.

Today, the owner – in a statement – said the police refused to file a case against the accused Ghulam Rasool Shar and his accomplices, instead registering a case against unknown individuals. Moreover, he said the arrested suspects are not his criminals.

According to Faqeer, the police have registered their own FIR and refused to provide him with its copy. He expressed frustration with the police’s handling of the case and demands justice for the camel.

Sindh CM takes notice

CM Murad Ali Shah directed the authorities to provide the best possible treatment to the wounded camel and also arrange for an artificial leg to be fitted after recovery.

Senator Agha Muhammad Ali also visited the camel at the Karachi center and reviewed the treatment process.

The Secretary of Live Stock, Kazim Jatoi, informed the Chief Minister that the camel is being treated by an NGO and will be fitted with an artificial leg after recovery.

Another camel found dead with legs amputated in Sindh

After a recent horrific incident involving a cruel owner who severely tortured a camel and chopped off its leg for entering his fields, a similar case of animal cruelty emerged in Sindh this week when another camel was found dead in Kunri tehsil with all four legs amputated.

The lifeless animal was discovered at Morjhango Turn, according to videos obtained by a local news channel. The owner, Abdul Rashid, explained that the camel, which had been sick, went to graze the day before.

"We don't want to accuse anyone," Rashid said, adding that he was trying to gather information regarding the incident.

"I have around 40 to 45 female camels. While all of them returned after grazing last evening, she was left behind alone."

Rashid expressed his distress, saying, "God knows who made her run, beat her and cut her legs. We don’t know anything yet... we'll see what to do next."

This marks the second distressing event involving a camel in the past few weeks. Prior to Eid-ul-Adha on June 14, another incident of animal cruelty was reported in Sanghar's Mundh Jamrao area.

The video of the incident went viral on social media, showing the camel in agony and crying. The owner of the camel protested vehemently at the Sanghar Press Club, holding the severed leg.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident, directing authorities to ensure appropriate action against those responsible. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that five suspects involved in the incident have been arrested and a case has been registered against them.

"Though the matter had been settled between the camel owner and the accused, this act is inhuman and unacceptable, which is why the case was registered on behalf of the state," Sharjeel said.

Pakistan Peoples Party, Central Information Secretary and Member of the National Assembly Shazia Atta Marri, also took notice of the incident, prompting the district administration to take action. Following Marri's intervention, Sanghar Deputy Commissioner Imran Hassan Khawaja dispatched medical teams to treat the injured camel. The influential people responsible for mutilating the camel were reportedly shielded by Mangli police, who registered the case on behalf of the police instead of the camel's owner.

Oh man- your last sentence was unbearable to think..makes me sick. .. how can a human do that?
I agree with you , I sometimes sit down and think when I am alone , how much humanity has regressed and how much low a human can stoop . But each time I feel this was lowest , I am wronged again and again.

More and more such incidents are coming to light now. What is wrong with these people.

A few things

Firstly sick of the word "torture". Does our media not know the meaning of the word or the difference between a beating, assault and actual torture?

Secondly, "strict action has been taken". Is nonsense. Unless someone is forever barred from the profession, jailed and fined which we know has not happened.

To which, the District Police Officer Dr Asad Ejaz Malhi took notice of the incident and ordered the Station House Officer Shahpur city police Safdar Iqbal to arrest the accused at the earliest.

Following the order, the police arrested the accused and started an investigation.

Pakistan has witnessed several incidents of animal abuse in the recent past.

In Sanghar, a leg of a camel was cut off by influential persons, but the police instead of registering a case against the influential person, registered a case against unidentified persons.

Later Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the matter while the police registered a case and detained five individuals allegedly involved in the crime.

what kind of a depraved society has Pakistan become, the wanton mutilation of animals is like the symptom of deeply entrenched societal trauma among the men of Pakistan.

The relevant department in this case the Airport Security Department ie CAA

They obviously don't care, and neither does the rest of the country if these stories are not making the news. The leadership must come from the top, and questions should be asked of the PM of the country why such low standards of morality have become the norm in Pakistan.

Police officials said the peasant had refused to identify the culprit and press charges against him, hence police lodged an FIR on behalf of the state against unknown persons under sections 429 and 34 PPC.

Prayer leader in Gujrat kills infant daughter for not having a son

In a tragic incident, an Imam (prayer leader) in Gujrat, Punjab, allegedly killed his three-month-old daughter out of frustration over not having a son, local police reported on Thursday.

According to Gujrat police, the suspect, identified as Ali Ahmed, had been married for two years and was the father of an only daughter. The brutal act occurred when the father forcibly took the infant from her mother and threw her into the Head Khokhar Canal in front of his wife’s eyes.

Dinga Police Station officials stated that the suspect lured his wife, Maryam Ayesha, and their three-month-old daughter, Zainab, to the canal under false pretences.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Ahmed harboured resentment over not having a son, which led him to commit the heinous crime.

The police confirmed that Ali Ahmed, who serves as an Imam at Mojianwala Mosque, has been arrested, and a murder case has been registered against him at Dinga Police Station.

Lawmakers criminalise necrophilia in Senate committee meeting

A legal gap related to incidents involving necrophilia has been filled after Senate lawmakers on Wednesday unanimously approved amendments to the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), criminalising the offence.

Necrophilia refers to having sexual attraction towards or committing sexual assault on a deceased body.

A meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior was convened by Senator Shahadat Awan at Parliament House, attended by Senators Irfan-ul-Haq Siddiqui and Samina Mumtaz Zehri, along with representatives from relevant departments.

The committee was scheduled to review various private members’ bills; however, due to the absence of the bill movers, these bills were deferred.

Amidst the deferral of most bills, the committee unanimously approved the “Pakistan Penal Code (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” introduced by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri.

It acknowledges the “disturbing trend” of necrophilia in Pakistan, pointing out that other nations have also enacted laws to criminalise the act.

The bill aims to establish a clear legal stance against necrophilia by penalising it under relevant criminal laws. It is amending Section 377 (unnatural offences), which is punishable by life imprisonment.

According to the bill, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, “It shall come into force at once” and the definition of Section 377 will be expanded to include dead bodies. It currently only punishes “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal”.

This move reflects a commitment to uphold the sanctity of the dead in accordance with Islamic teachings. “To break the bone of a deceased person is similar to breaking the bone of a living person,” the bill states, quoting the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

“The crime of necrophilia comes not only under the ambit of zina but also hudd crime, meaning a violation of divine law also,” the bill adds, stating that it must be penalised through the country’s laws.

The bill also states that the definition of unnatural offences does not explicitly include carnal intercourse with a dead body, effectively creating a loophole in criminal law that leaves cases of necrophilia often unpunished.

Initially, Samina Mumtaz suggested also adding children to the definition of Section 377, but the law and interior ministries recommended to only add “dead bodies”. The bill was unanimously passed.

Last month, police arrested a 40-year-old man and booked him on suspicion of digging up the grave of a recently-buried woman and sexually abusing the corpse in a Korangi graveyard in Karachi.

In 2021, some unknown men dug out the corpse of a freshly-buried teenage girl and raped it in Maulvi Ashraf Chandio village near the coastal town of Ghulamullah.

In 2011, police arrested a man who confessed to defiling the corpses of 48 women in the Paposh Nagar graveyard over an eight-year period, as reported by The Express Tribune.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has constituted a seven-member committee to investigate allegations of sexual assault involving a student at a college in Lahore

The committee, which will be chaired by the Chief Secretary of Punjab Zahid Akhtar Zaman, is expected to conduct a comprehensive examination of the incident.

The investigative committee is tasked with submitting its findings to the Chief Minister within 48 hours, according to Express News.

This development follows widespread protests by students at the Punjab college after reports of sexual assault on a student ignited on social media.

Many students clashed with police and security guards during the protests, resulting in several injuries.

In a statement issued yesterday, the father and uncle of the alleged victim clarified that their daughter had not been assaulted, claiming she had fallen at home and suffered a back injury, leading to her admission to the intensive care unit.

DIG Operations Faisal Kamran stated that the suspect, a security guard, has been taken into custody, but the details surrounding the incident have yet to be confirmed.

Father denies reports of daughter's sexual assault at Lahore college

LAHORE:
The father of a girl allegedly assaulted by a security guard at a private college in Lahore has dismissed the claims, stating that the family is not connected to the protests being held in their daughter’s name.

Speaking alongside ASP Shehrbano Naqvi, the girl's father clarified that his daughter had sustained a back injury after slipping at home, which led to her being admitted to the ICU.

He expressed surprise at the protests and videos circulating on social media, emphasizing the family's disassociation with these activities. "Anyone with daughters can understand our pain," he added.

The father also mentioned that they had provided the police with medical reports confirming the nature of their daughter's injury.

ASP Shehrbano Naqvi requested the public to refrain from spreading misinformation that could cause undue stress to the family.

She further explained that if any actual incident of assault had occurred, the police would have filed a case themselves, based on solid evidence.

Naqvi emphasized the importance of verified information before filing any reports and warned that rumors could create unnecessary law and order problems.

She reiterated that Punjab Police take crimes against women, children, and vulnerable communities very seriously, but in this instance, there is no credible evidence to support the assault allegations.

Following the incident, a police crackdown unfolded on student protesters at a private college in Lahore after reports emerged of an alleged rape of a female student on October 14.

Police register case over fake video linked to student of private college

A case has been registered in the Defence A police station over the baseless video which was falsely linked to the unfounded rape news at a private college.

According to the FIR, the news of assault on a girl went viral on the social media. When the parents of the girl were contacted, they denied the incident.

Different interviews were conducted with students for finding any authenticity in the allegations.

They told police that the girl had a fall at her home on Oct 2 as a result of which she suffered serious injuries.

She was treated at the Ittefaq Hospital till Oct 11. Also, she was advised 15-day bed rest.

They said the girl did not go to college during this time. The social media campaign damaged the family's reputation, they added.

The FIA’s Cyber Crime Cell has, in the meantime, constituted a seven-member committee to investigate the incident.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari claims Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) encouraged students to incite unrest through its official social media page

Reacting to Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar’s press conference, Minister Azma Bukhari said that members of the Insaf Student Wing were found involved in violent acts and vandalism, Express News reported.

"Bhachar Sahib, you're not as innocent as you try to appear," she remarked.

Azma Bukhari further stated that former officials of the Insaf Student Wing incited students themselves, and there is video evidence to prove it.

She also accused PTI of maliciously planning to defame a young girl and her family. Following this defamation, students were mobilised for protests.

Punjab Information Minister alleged that PTI's habit is to launch vile propaganda against women, citing that both she and Maryam Nawaz have repeatedly been targets of such campaigns.

She also mentioned that the situation across Punjab's cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Gujranwala, remains normal. The police are fulfilling their duties to maintain peace and order.

The Information Minister warned that no one will be allowed to disrupt peace in Punjab or spread unrest. Those involved in spreading fake information and propaganda, regardless of their profession, will face strict action.

Earlier today, leader of the opposition Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar, claimed that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has issued a charge sheet against PTI in her press conference to 'cover up her bad governance' and is blaming PTI to 'hide her incompetence.'

During a press conference at the Lahore Press Club with other assembly members, Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar said that private and government institutions are being politicised.

Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar responded as Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has rejected allegations of a rape incident at a private college in Lahore, labeling it as fabricated.

Maryam Nawaz also referred to a PTI as "terrorists" for orchestrating the conspiracy and using children to spread misinformation.

Propaganda on social media tarnished image, says college principal

Punjab College Campus 10 Principal Sadia Yousaf said that a propaganda was disseminated on social media against the institution.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore along with the students of campus, she said that the institution and country was damaged in result of the protest.

“A fake post went viral on social media. It has been proved that we are on the right side,” said the principal.

A student Iman Yousaf said that she uploaded a video without any verification and she was ashamed of her act.

“All the girls were sharing the post on social media. They asked me to make a video,” Iman said.

She added that she was sitting in the press conference with her consent.

Earlier, Lahore police chief Bilal Siddique Kamyana said that no evidence was found to confirm the incident at a private college.

“The police found nothing in the CCTV footage of the college,” he said.

No evidence found in private college incident, says CCPO

Lahore police chief Bilal Siddique Kamyana says no evidence has been found to confirm the incident at a private college.

In a press conference with DIG Operations Faisal Kamran, CCPO Lahore Bilal Siddique Kamyana mentioned that a video related to a private college went viral on social media. As soon as the incident was reported, the college’s CCTV footage was reviewed, but nothing was found, he held.

He said that the hospitals mentioned on social media was also checked, and the names of the girls in the video were investigated.

“One of the girls is married, and the students who have initially spoken about the incident have now retracted their statements. So far, no evidence has been found to confirm the incident,” he added.

Kamyana further said that a high-level government committee also declared the incident baseless. Motorcycles were burnt on Wednesday, 24 people were arrested, and students involved in violence were warned and released.

“Everyone has the right to protest, violence is not acceptable,” he said. He urged the parents and students to avoid such actions, as it would harm their education.

The Lahore CCPO also stated that a case had been registered under cybercrime with the FIA.

“If there is any evidence regarding the private college, it should be brought forward, and action will be taken. No proof has been found yet, and both the FIA and police are investigating,” he mentioned.

He said that the guard mentioned in the incident had taken leave and gone to his village. The guard was called back and included in the inquiry. Since the incident never happened, there couldn’t have been any mishandling. He affirmed that strict action would be taken against those involved in the violence.

Security guard shot dead 7-year-old in Lahore

The child, who had been playing cricket nearby, went to the farmhouse to drink water when the security guard, identified as Nazir, opened fire killing the child on spot.

According to the police, Nazir was apprehended while attempting to flee to Okara from a local bus stand, while the murder weapon was also recovered from the arrested guard.

The incident has been officially registered based on a complaint filed by the child’s father.

The FIR further states that a few days prior to the incident, Nazir had warned the child not to drink water from the farmhouse.

On the day of the incident, when the child returned to the farmhouse, Nazir fired at him, leading to his death.

The case also names two unidentified individuals in connection with the security guard’s actions, however, further investigations are underway to determine their involvement.

No evidence to support rape claims at Lahore college: HRCP

A joint fact-finding mission by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and AGHS Legal Aid Cell has stated that, without forensic evidence or credible testimonies, it is impossible to verify widespread allegations that a student was sexually assaulted at a private college in Lahore last month.

The mission noted a series of events that have heightened suspicion and distrust among students at Punjab College Campus 10. These events included a spate of social media posts making unverified allegations of rape, contradictory statements from government representatives — who initially endorsed and later denied the claims — and a delayed, inadequate response from the college administration.

The mission condemned the use of “disproportionate force” by police against hundreds of students who protested at Campus 10 on Oct 14, demanding justice for the alleged victim, only to be met with police violence.

Further analysis of online engagement suggested that other parties may have exploited the students’ narrative to extend their own social media reach, the mission said.

The mission observed that the students’ protest underlined dissatisfaction with campus security, perceived incidents of harassment and a lack of trust in the college administration and police. The mission believes that the intensity of students’ ire should not be discounted solely because of the apparent role of misinformation. At the same time, the damage wrought by pervasive misinformation is grounds for strong, regular public campaigns on digital literacy and fact-checking.

Among other recommendations, the mission suggests conducting a forensic investigation of the CCTV footage collected on Campus 10 over the first two weeks of October and holding the police accountable for violence against student protesters as well as for detaining a person accused of the alleged offence in the absence of an FIR against him.

The mission strongly believes, however, that concerns of harassment and sexual violence on campus must always be taken seriously and effective anti-harassment committees instituted on all campuses that can be accessed easily by students while respecting their right to confidentiality.

TikToker remanded for false claim

Meanwhile, an anti-terrorism court on Friday granted Gulberg police a six-day physical remand for a TikToker, Sara Khan, who claimed to be the mother of an alleged rape victim at Punjab College.

Police presented Ms Khan in court, seeking a 14-day remand. The investigating officer stated that the suspect recorded a video in which she claimed to be the mother of the alleged victim and posted it on her TikTok account. The video quickly went viral, adding to the controversy around the case.

The officer told the court that the suspect had been charged with making a false claim, inciting public sentiment against authorities and encouraging violence.

Judge Manzer Ali Gill approved a six-day remand, specifying that Ms Khan — a Karachi resident with a permanent address in Multan — would remain in police custody from sunrise to sunset and spend nights in judicial custody.

LAHORE: Multan Police identified 30-35 people, including the Nishtar Hospital staff, who were behind the alleged tampering with the record of the kidney patients who tested positive for HIV/AIDS. However, police lack the mandate to investigate the health professionals.

On the other hand, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has come out in the support of the medics, including the Nishtar Medical University (NMU) VC, who were suspended for negligence that resulted in infections of dozens of kidney patients with HIV in the hospital.

Police completed the probe into the forged test reports of the patients on the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz when the HIV/AIDS scandal in the nephrology unit of the hospital came to the limelight.

An official told Dawn police would submit findings of the investigation to the health department for further action.

We have no mandate to investigate the healthcare professionals held guilty of the HIV/AIDS outbreak in the Nishtar Hospital,” he said, adding that the Multan police probe was limited to the issue of patients’ records that were tampered with.

During the investigation, he said, police found that the private labs had tampered with the record of dialysis patients enrolled with the Nishtar Hospital and generated new backdated test reports to mislead the authorities. He revealed that a hospital employee was running a dialysis centre out of the government health facility and he had used in his private lab the test kits supplied officially to the Nisthar Hospital.

The police officer added that nearly 30-35 persons, including the hospital employees, were found involved in preparing bogus test reports of the dialysis patients who contracted HIV/AIDS due to negligence of the medics.

To a question, he said, the investigation was carried out under the supervision of an SSP.

The PMA condemned the government’s action against the NMU VC and other health professionals in the wake of the scandal.

Talking to the media at a press conference held on Monday, the PMA leaders declared the suspensions of the senior medics on the basis of an inquiry conducted by the fact-finding committee illegal, illogical and against the rules.

The reports suggested that the PMA came to the support of the guilty NMU senior faculty members and other doctors when a senior leader of the association from Multan was also held responsible for allegedly tampering with the record of the patients who carried HIV/AIDS during the dialysis in the hospital.

Sindh home minister orders inquiry as over 100 goats poisoned to death in Mirpurkhas

In a shocking incident, a large number of goats were killed in Mirpurkhas reportedly after they were fed some “poisonous’” plants, prompting Sindh Home Minister Sindh Ziaul Hasan Lanjar to order an inquiry into the case, officials said on Wednesday.

The Home Minister’s Spokesperson Sohail Ahmed Jokhio told Dawn.com that “over 100 goats have been killed in Digri taluka of Mirpurkhas division after eating some poisonous grass.”

“District Mirpurkhas police are on the case, a first information report is being lodged, and an inquiry committee under the Crime Investigation Agency Deputy Superintendent of Police has been constituted to probe the incident,” Jokhio said.

He hinted at the possibility that the incident might be an outcome of some “personal enmity” with the owners of the animals.

The home minister has sought details from Mirpurkhas’ senior superintendent of police about the incident, a statement from his office said.

He also directed the police to carry out a thorough probe to ascertain the facts of the case while also issuing directions for “strict legal action against the suspect(s) involved in it in light of inquiry findings.”

Several incidents related to animal cruelty surfaced this year. In June, a landlord from Sanghar allegedly mutilated a camel’s right leg as “punishment” for foraging into his farmland for fodder.

Also in June, the ACF Animal Rescue shelter released a graphic and horrifically disturbing video showing a group of adult men throwing a dog from the terrace of a building in Karachi’s Liaquatabad. The footage resulted in calls for immediate action to protect stray animals from such vile and inhumane behaviour.

In yet another incident of animal cruelty on June 18, a donkey (jennet) had its ears severed in a village in Rawalpindi district, with its owner accusing another man of committing the brutality but police suspecting that the incident could be the culmination of longstanding enmity and land dispute.
