I'm sat at Old Trafford today watching Michael Clarke reach a wonderful 100. An innings without any controversy, an innings that contained some wonderful strokeplay and brilliant footwork.

Upon reaching the landmark of three figures Clarke raised his bat to his team mates in the dressing room and acknowledged the applause of the crowd. I looked around the field and noticed only 2 England players applauding Clarke's 100 (Stokes and Tredwell). The rest stood around, some with hands in pockets and others just looking around the field.

I'm not singling England out here but is sportsmanship in cricket a dying art and a win at all costs mentality taking over?

Well.. IMO ... too much money is the factor.

I think, the reason is ..... Why should England bowlers applaud if Clark's 100 meant them being dropped.. and lose 1000s of $$?

How is sportsmanship an art? we see players before and after the match shake hands. Sportsmanship in Cricket is far far better than major sports like Football, Hockey, Rugby etc. I think Cricket is only behind Tennis and Golf in terms of sportsmanship.

Why should all the England fielders applaud when their opponent is scoring big and taking away the game from them. weird logic.. Also they should be already tired fielding in the ground and would be in no mood to support the opposition ..

After the match is over they can give a hands or applaud for him

I know we love to give England a bash or two, but expecting eleven out of eleven players to applaud an opposition batting milestone is farcical.

Don't see where it says all eleven players were expected to applaud.

The audience applauding is always good to see but I don't see why the opposition players should be expected to applaud. They are paid to win.

I dont think that players are expected to applaud but it does show the character of the players when they aknowledge the opposition.

Like walking, it can only be viewed as a bonus.

Speaks volumes about English cricketers in this case.

I don't have any specific memories of 11 opposition fielders suddenly forming a synchronised act of worship when the guy at the crease gets a hundred. Usually it is just a few players who applaud or go and shake his hand. This goes for all teams.

I think so yes, compared to before but it's still better than football where you push each other and swear all the time

Agreed. Cricket is a gentlemans game because it gives players with the character the opportunity to show it.

Most cricketers are not gentlemen and that is fine. It's professional sport. It's playing for your country.

But it's really nice when strong character shows.

Cricket fans are so soft and sensitive its sometimes quite demeaning to be associated as one. Imagine if a football, basketbal, hockey, etc, etc fan made a similar remark that individual would be mocked like there is no tommorow. I know people will come up with the gentlemen game and history and all that but cmon folks move on. You play the game to win applauding the opposition on the field of play is quite ridiculous, appluad and put on the fake smile after the game but during the game please put away the pleasantries and compete like a proud athlete.

Maybe it's just me but I don't think a 100 merits an applause from the opposition unless it's a very hard earned 100.

this is art which needs die.

enough with this "Gentlmanship"!

time has changed. it is time to be ruthless.

bat is your shield, ball is your gun.

LET THE GAME BEGIN!

When a bowler gets his 5th wicket (or 10th in a test), or a hat trick, you don't see the opposition on the balcony cheering or the opposition batsmen applauding. I'm sure there's a "well played" exchanged at the end of the match though. The thing I like to see is both sets of supporters applause milestones.

I've seen enough cricket and played enough cricket to know that everyone will not applaud an opposition batsman upon reaching three figures, but still it was surprising to see only two of the fielding side clap Clarke.

It was great of Richards to do this, on the other hand there is nothing wrong if another player decide to break the stumps and initiate a runout. I am all for sportsmanship, but it should not be an advantage to the opponent. For Ex. the rule is batsman and non striker should run 22 yards to complete a run, why should the non striker be able to gain advantage by breaking the rule and getting few yards head start before the ball is bowled?

Sportsmanship should be for doing the right thing and not to take advantage of the system. For ex. Batsman should walk when they nick or congratulate your opponent at the end of the day for playing well.

Would he have done the same in a World Cup final ?

Sportsmanship is the reason why cricket is lagging behind the rest of the world.
