[VIDEO] Michael Clarke pondering return to national captaincy after ball-tampering saga

Michael Clarke has admitted to feeling humiliated and let down by the Australian Cricket teams recent Ball tampering. He has announced that he may consider an international comeback to restore the dignity and respect of Australian Cricket. Thoughts?

Its very easy to throw your name out there and get all the plaudits when you know that it will never be seriously considered.

But hey it makes Clarke look good.

Not a bad idea - especially if the entire ‘current leadership’ is involved in this fiasco. Australia will need a strong, fair leader to guide them out of this like Ganguly or Misbah and i don’t see anybody in the current batch who can make the cut

If we wanted to go down this route we'd pick Bailey or White. Someone still playing cricket and who isn't a cripple.

Or you know pick Tim Paine or one of the two Sheffield Shield captains currently in the test side but not implicated in this.

Is this genuine news? Source?

Clarke said so on fox sports.

He is not coming back, lol. It is easy to say I am ready for a comeback.

Yeh, exactly. Bailey and White are the only options as a back up captain. Although, I wouldn’t mind someone like Pat Cummins being tried out as captain. I think it’s fairly certain now that Smith will be sacked since I heard even Malcolm Turnbull has asked for his sacking.

“This is so raw right now. This is not about me at all,” he said. “This is about Australian cricket and the future of Australian cricket and where these current players and this current structure and leadership sits, and my job is to make sure I can help this game come back from this.

The reporters were grilling him to return. I am sure he wont. It would be ridiculous.

Better to nominate a current player in the XI as the captain. How about Shaun Marsh?

Mitch Marsh has been captaining WA recently, but he made his return a couple of tests ago. As of yet he hasn’t cemented his spot.

If this is based off what Clarke said on the Sunday Sports Show on Ch. 9, Peter Fitzsimons pressurised Clarke to answer the question and Clarke simply said he would consider it if someone approached him. Doubt he would though, he hasn’t even played grade cricket lately.

Khawaja is also the captain of Victoria and both Tim Paine and Shaun Marsh have extensive first class experience and at one point Paine was considered a future Australian Captain.

No. This isn't Patiala house where the ex-cricketer was so good that he makes a comeback to the game years later and everyone is happy with it.

This is a clever bit of self-PR, have to say.

Tim Paine is the logical choice. Giving Khawaja the captaincy would be bizarre considering he’s not even a certain starter for the next test.

*Queensland, not Vic.

That would be pretty cool. He could restore some dignity. Don't know if they would let him into the team though, I hope they consider it.

We all love a movie script kinda comeback turning into reality. Most people would love it.

Welcome back Michael Balboa.

Michael Clarke kept open the possibility he could return as Australia captain on Sunday, after a ball-tampering scandal in the third Test against South Africa plagued his successor Steve Smith.

Clarke, 36, retired in 2015 after his 115th and final Test of the Ashes series against England and comments on cricket for Australia's Nine Network.

He told the broadcaster when quizzed whether he would assume the captaincy again if asked: "If I was asked by the right people, then I would think about my answer."

The 36-year-old said he was emotional about the scandal, expressing sympathy for Smith and his team-mates but also slamming the incident as "blatant cheating".

"In my heart, I believe [Smith] has just made a really, really bad mistake. You know, I hope there can be a way around this, that he can continue to captain Australia," Clarke said.

"This is not about me at all. This is about Australian cricket and the future of Australian cricket and where these current players and this current structure and leadership sits.

"And my job is to make sure I can help this game come back from this."

Clarke added he was "sitting completely on the fence" amid calls for Smith to step down or be stood down.

"My heart feels for him. If something is to happen to Steve Smith, then the captaincy cannot go to anybody that has been involved in this situation," he said.

Sounds like something a Pakistani player would say.

In my opinion, if clarke would think about it, it's more so to change the system rather than just for one off incident.

In his interview, he clearly implies that the role of captaincy is losing the authority it should have (which once had).

And a new member will coming through this system is itself will be product of the system and hence no reformation could be made.

One has to come from the older generation in order to set things straight. And there's no person better than clarke for it.

No chance he could come back as a player let alone a captain. Whether he has still “got it” or not is irrelevant, he has a chronic bad back and would not be able to play an innings of longer than a couple of hours at the most. He even struggled to overcome his back condition in his late twenties at times, let alone in retirement, and it is pretty much the main reason that he retired when he did.

That said. With Lehmann and who knows what other staff on the verge of termination at any point now - Clarke may well be invited back in a coaching capacity of some sort.

Clarke did mention the caveat of the right people being in charge. I don't think there's any in that category, at this moment in time.

But who knows, maybe the pull of representing his country in this juncture is too strong to turn down.

Clarke open to making Test comeback

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke says he's willing to consider coming out of retirement to help out the Test side following the suspensions of David Warner, Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft.

Clarke, who retired after losing the Ashes series in England three years ago, says he has messaged Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland to offer his assistance but is yet to hear a response.

He says he's willing to help in any way he can, whether that be a mentoring role with younger players or even pulling on the pads again.

The 37-year-old battled with a chronic back problem in the latter stages of a glittering career that saw him score 8,643 runs in 115 Tests and chalk up 28 centuries.

However, he believes he is fitter than he has been for years and desperate to give something back to the sport which has been rocked by the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

"I've never cared about age. Brad Hogg played at 45," Clarke told News Corp Australia.

"I don't think it's about a number. I think it's about commitment and devotion.

"It's like getting back on a bike. I'm as fit and healthy as I've ever been. The time away has been great for my body.

"To be honest, I'm so nervous about the headline and how it's perceived.

"But I can't just sit here and do nothing. I feel I owe the game too much.

"I’ve experienced a lot of great things in cricket but some tough times as well.

"I’ve got the experience to help these young players and that’s where our focus should be right now until the other guys come back."

The 37-year-old hasn't played a competitive match since turning out in Sydney grade cricket in September 2016.

He looked very content as a commentator in IPL. Could soon be a batting coach or mentor at one of the teams

Would be ridiculous to ask him to comeback!

He is not returning. He had back issues back in 2015 only because of which he looked in all sorts of trouble and hence decided to retire.

His back issues did him otherwise he still would have been playing Test cricket. Micheal Clarke was a great bat to watch for the fans but unfortunately couldn't play all his shots anymore because of that back problem the reason he decided to quit the game.

Sad for cricket, but that's how it goes.

Australia could hire him as a mentor. He is finished as a player due to his back.
