Whilst commentating on TV, Aamir Sohail tried to explain issues with Naseem Shah's bowling

This is NS's only wicket so far.

Naseem is terrible. It makes me laugh when deluded fans overhype him as a star in the making.

He has been playing Test cricket since December 2019 and he has been garbage in every series apart from the third Test against Australia couple of months back.

He should be nowhere near the team, he is hyped not because he has any real potential but because PCB faked his age. He is the same age as Shaheen but the latter is streets ahead in terms of talent, skill and maturity.

Naseem is legitimately one of the worst bowlers in the world who wouldn’t even make the bench of a proper team.

Still looks very underdeveloped as a bowler.

After 2.5 years he still doesn't have a method of wicket-taking. Is he a line and length swing bowler ? Is he a reverse swing bowler ? Today he's tried banging it in and being an enforcer. He's looked comfortable in none of these roles.

Clearly unfit. This lad is at his best when he is operating between 85-90 MPH, not this 80-82 rubbish.

Naseem is definitely not ready for Test cricket.

I think his short height is also a disadvantage for him.

Bla bla bla...

Tired of this talks.
Who is stopping you to help these young guys?

He overdid the short stuff today.

He lacks a gameplan sometimes and this is where strong leadership and guidance is needed which he doesn't always get on the field.

Sohail saying 'a long time' but how much has he played?

He is underdeveloped because he missed out on domestic cricket ever since getting picked in 2019.

A full qea season will do him a lot of good.
Pakistan need to be patient and not rush him.

Short ball someone should tell wasim akram that naseem is too short and can't bowl a heavy ball.

A better prospect is dahani who is built like a fast lanky sinewy type physique good pace and can rear one off back of a length.

I agree Dahani is a better talent, but Naseem has enough talent to have a successful career for Pakistan. He has to play atleast 1 complete season of qea, that will help him a lot.

Rushing him in and out won't help him.

I'm not sure what Sohail means by 'draws a big circle'. Is he effectively asking him to change his action?

That isn't very helpful analysis then.

There definetly seems to be an issue with his action which is causing him to lose pace and will cause him consistent injuries

To me he loads up fine for someone to bowl with a sideways action but then seems to come over and around his body and front leg in delivering it straight down the wkt

It just seems like a stressful action on his body and one where all the forces are not being aligned and coming down straight but are being pulled from one direction to another

Hed be well advised to load up the same and bowl with a sideways actions like an akhter or waqar or load up front on and bowl down the wkt ala steyn

At the moment he is doing neither and is losing momentum consistentcy and risking injury

Naseem has worked with many bowling coaches now. Truth be told I was against him being bought back into the team this quickly, he should have been made to earn his place in the team ie perform in domestic cricket for atleast two seasons before getting recalled

If you become predictable then even tailenders can hit you around and that's what happened earlier.

He was bowling short ball after short ball. How about a few yorkers!

Short of a length can be bowled effectively in Sri Lanka and us a good strategy. Dale Steyn used that to good effect in 2014. But he was bowling a lot quicker than Naseem was though.

I’m not quite sure exactly this big circle stuff aamir is talking about but he is right about one thing. His bowling arm finishing between his legs is a flaw and does stop him from finishing his action. If he wants to maximise his pace and effectiveness, he has to find a way to finish his action.

I do think he is not 100% fit too.

If they want to use him, make sure he’s fully fit.

Why is it that an analyst like Aamir can see the issue but someone like Shaun Tait cannot?

That's fair. Let him play domestics for a season or 2.

he did play domestic and did well, hence he was graduated out of it.

infact it was his domestic performances that got him noticed.

His innings today to help Babar was crucial for our survival

Naseem Shah has missed some time due to injuries since his debut, also being a youngster he has not played many full seasons to properly develop his game.

Will Pakistan select Naseem again for the final Test?

FYQVjznXgAAneH8.jpg

I hope he is dropped but if he isn't then expect this to-be his last game for good 3-4 years.

His run up and jump has been tampered with and he is lacking momentum coming through the crease.

This has resulted in him losing pace and and some swing as his pace has dropped considerably from when he started in late 2019. From being around 140-145kph he has dropped down to 133-136kph, which is a shame as he promised a lot when he came on the scene in 2019 but has not made much development.

He bowled quite well in the two Aus tests on flat pitches and it seemed he has turned a corner however this series he is back to bowling how he bowled in 2020-21 medium pace and no swing quite disappointing really as he was a genuine prospect once.

good pace bowlers need to be elastic and explosive, at the moment he seems stiff and measured. im guessing hes got injury worries in the back of his head. unless he ups his pace he would pbly be better served to play out a whole season of domestic at home.

Lol, the legend Wasim Akram gives some well-intentioned advice and some posters just have to criticize him for it.

He must either be holding back or is not fully fit. He was a lot quicker in the Aus series and looked Rapid in the t20 blast

He's young and will have plenty of tests like this however he will come back strong.

He was the fastest bowler in Asia in terms of average speed up to this test match.

There's definitely something wrong.
He might be carrying an injury or something else.

He was bowling at 141 ks in terms of average pace which is seriously fast only starc and nortje were faster than him.

It is mind numbing how poor our coaching staff with bowling strategies. Even a complete novice can tell you that a bowler like Naseem is absolutely useless when bowling early to mid 80s. He’s too short to be effective at that pace. He should only be selected for his pace. If he is not fit enough to be bowling flat out, he should not play. It’s as simple as that. If some coach tells him to slow down and only concentrate on the over-used phrase “right areas” then that bowling coach should be sacked and never get a job again.

And that is only just about Naseem - we make poor decisions all over the place.

Pick 3 seamers on a turning pitch.

Pick 2 average finger spinners on absolute pancakes against Australia.

Overbowl Shaheen in every format to the extent that, as expected, he now has a knee injury.

I don’t know what these guys are thinking.

I completely agree with this. Against Australia he was brilliant as he bowled with aggression and more importantly looked 100% fit. If he was bowling with the same pace and looking as fit against SL it was a no brainer to select him.

But watching him in this last test vs SL, he was clearly either not fit or holding himself back. There is no point selecting him or if he’s bowling like that. The coaching staff should have noticed his fitness before the match or told him to go flat out and not hold back if he was fully fit.

I think since 2003 we have developed this culture to hold back our fast bowlers by drilling the same “pace is not that important” rubbish to every single bowler. It doesn’t work like that. For some bowlers it’s not that important, but for some bowlers it clearly is.

In Tests he should be bowling short 3-4 over bursts, that's the best way to use him.

He lacks the patience for long spells and to work over batters at the moment.

They've so grossly mismanaged Shaheen. Classic case of being run into the ground I fear.
I hope not though, a talent like him deserves better.

Pakistan coaching staff is incompetent.
They should have figured these things out in net practice.
He was way too slower than his usual pace.If he doesn't bowl at 140 plus he won't be useful especially in Asia.

He has always been fast since the very first match but was slower in the recent match.

Maybe he was holding himself back or maybe he is carrying an injury but it was unusual to see him at 130-135ks.

I hope they sort this thing out.

Naseem is a work in progress. He has certainly shown glimpses of his talent at test level but needs much much more consistency in producing the good bits.

Too much tinkering seems to going on, on a series to series basis with Naseem. Let him hone his craft in domestics.

Till then Dahani, Waseem, Irfanullah, Sameen, Khurram could be tried. Even Hamza( for certain conditions) and Ehsan are options.

Yes I agree they should not tinker with him. He could go back to domestic, might not be the worst thing. But I have yet to see any evidence of the coaching staff having a clue about how to use him even when they do pick him.

They thrust him in to the spotlight on a tour to Aus in his first series where he impressed, but they kept stressing we need to manage him and don’t want him to break down - if you’re that worried he’ll break down, Why did you pick him?

On the 2020 covid tour to England, he wasn’t bowling particularly fast or aggressive. If he didn’t show something in the first test, why keep playing him? Then in the NZ series he was bowling as consistently slow as I’ve seen him and expected him to perform without his main asset - pace. Again if he wasn’t bowling fast (whatever the reason), why did you keep playing him in that series. You will not get a good medium pace line and length bowler out of Naseem. It’s not rocket science.

Finally in the 3rd test Vs Aus I thought they’ve finally cracked it. But now they pick him and use him as a medium pacer again.

It's a joke this has been allowed to happen and they're still trying to fix it nearly three years later.

Guys like Sameen Gul who were already playing FC cricket should have been invested in and developed for Test cricket not some untested kid plucked from thin air.

Interesting to hear the former Sri Lankan bowler Farveez Maharoof pointing out flaws in Naseem's action.

Why aren't these issues being picked up by PCB coaches.

Tbh whenever I watch Naseem, I now see a kid who is just over coached and someone worrying about too many things regarding his action, run up vs just naturally running in and letting his natural ability speak for itself.

He needs more experience ie two seasons of first class cricket backed with performances, A tour performances, ODI and T20 Cricket performances before he should be playing test cricket. Right now he does not look ready for test cricket

Exactly when he burst on scent he was mid 140's bowler with a natural outswing too many coaches tinkering with his natural action has turned him in to a short Skiddy mid 130's gun barrel straight medium pacer

Still looked more dangerous than Hasan.

Should be used in short spells bursts like Johnson in his last run. For that you need two pacers who can bowl long consistent spells like Harris and Siddle did. Hasan isn't doing that right now. Shaheen is not playing.

My son is a leg spinner and he had the same issues and I mean exactly the same issue and as much we tried, he couldn't change and when he did, he spent all his time looking at his foot and forgot about bowling.

Another reason why they should have played 3 seemers.

Naseem was good today and was unlucky with dropped catches. Hasan Ali was asleep and babar dropped a dolly

Morrison said that what Naseem is doing with his front foot isn't technically wrong and other bowlers have used the same technique, but it will put a lot of stress on his body.

Much better from Naseem - gave us the best chance possible in this game but our batters...uff!

But 7 no balls in this innings is something he has to fix

this is where hasan ali becomes a problem.

he should realize that he's the "senior" paceman, yet get no wicket and is bowling at low 80s

no impact

naseem at least bowled with aggression and created chances, plus inside edges that didnt hit the wickets

Done well for Pakistan - 3 wickets in first innings, 2 so far in this one.

Lot of people wrote him off but he is proving them all wrong essentially as the leader of the attack in this match

That's now 2 good games out of last 3 so improvment is there still a bit away to say say he has repaid the faith but it gets him couple of more tests.

People here are in such a hurry to bash him, they forget all perspective.
He has bowled really well this game.

Hasan Ali , was already out from WBC ( should be ) and now looks like he doesn't deserve a place in test eleven also. He is older than his stated age, no wonder at " 28" he is bowling like a 35 year old , just like when Razzaq lost his pace at "26".

Everything does not come down to age fudging unless there are some concrete supporting facts. He had stress factures of the back after WC 19 and has struggled with the overall fragility of his body and fitness. He had multiple deliveries over 140 kph in PSL 2022. QAE 2020 season really helped and he was one of the best test pacer in the 2020-21 season however, currently seems to be struggling. Poor form impacts bowlers as well, not only batsmen.

Wrong thread to have this discussion though.

That's why PCBs complicitness in the age faking does so much damage to PK cricket. It subverts resources away from real 17 yrs, to 22 Yr old pretending to be 17/18. Anyone picked for any rep team must have full background checks

Done well for Pakistan - 3 wickets in first innings, 2 so far in this one.

For him to be successful he has to bowl at least 87 with the odd one hitting 90mph. He doesn't have the skills to be able to bowl at 83mph and be successful

People were writing Naseem off but he has bowled well and with more luck could have got more wickets.

He is developing into a good bowling option. It’s a shame this struggle and toil to reach where he is now was not done in the Domestic circuit. This current version of Naseem Shah making a debut now would have been far more beneficial for him and Pakistan instead of the one that debuted in 2019.

Definitely is turning into a good option.if only it was done in domestic circuit.

Naseem Shah :

27 with bat,
25 with ball.

Second best bowler behind Shaheen for Pakistan.

3 matches in a row now where Naseem hasn't been picked.

Surely he needs game time ahead of the T20 World Cup.
