Richards, coming in with Ratnayeke on a hat-trick, set about the Sri Lankan bowling with such savagery that his own record highest score in a one-day international (189 not out off 170 balls against England) looked certain to be eclipsed. Instead, caught when aiming for another six, he had to settle for the highest individual score in a World Cup innings: 181 from 125 balls, with 6 sixes and 16 fours. It was Richards's tenth hundred in one-day matches for West Indies, while Haynes's 105 (109 balls, 1 six, 9 fours) was his ninth. West Indies' total was the highest in a one-day international, the previous being Pakistan's 338 for five off 60 overs in the 1983 World Cup.

The KING!

Wish we had such high profile matches in Karachi and the rest of Pakistan.

IA the day will come.

I remember hearing BBC Radio reports at the time.

The original master blaster at work.

SL were minnows then but a ferocious knock by all standards.

Best ODI batsman of all-time. For a 70s/80s batsman to maintain that average and strike rate was just exceptional during his era. Those stats still hold up commendably even in the current era.

Have to remember back then whilst SL were considered Minnows, this would have been an Inns with no power plays, fielding restrictions or boundary ropes been brought in.

Viv has to go down one of best ODI batsmen ever.
