2 Sadhus Among 3 Killed By Mob In Maharashtra, BJP Seeks Probe

Mumbai:

Barely 125 kilometres from Mumbai, a small village in Maharashtra's Palghar district has reported a horrific case of mob killing; three people, including a 70-year-old man, were attacked and killed on Thursday night after rumours they were kidnapping children to harvest organs, including kidneys.

Shocking visuals show angry residents of Gadchinchale village, armed with sticks and stones, out of control and attacking a police team as they try to restore order and rescue the 70-year-old man and the two others. Two of those killed are sadhus, the third was the driver of the car they were travelling in.

In one of several videos of the assault a man can be heard shouting "Oye, isko maro (Hey, hit him)" and the 70-year-old victim can be seen, surrounded by an armed mob and bleeding badly from his head, begging for his life as cops try to control the situation.

A second shows dozens of villagers systematically breaking the glass windows of a police patrol vehicle. Yet another shows the vehicle rolled over with the windshield shattered.

"The police reached the spot and when they put the victims in the police car, the mob attacked them again. Policemen have also been injured in the incident. The officers managed to bring them to the hospital, but they died. We are investigating the incident and 110 people have been taken into custody," Kailash Shinde, the District Collector, said.

"I want to appeal to everyone to not believe in rumours. No one is coming to steal from your village or take your child's kidneys. Villagers have taken the matter into their hands and we will take necessary action," he added.

A post-mortem report is awaited.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the mob attack. "Seeing the visuals that have come out, Palghar incident of mob lynching is shocking & inhuman. It is more disturbing especially when we are going through such tough times otherwise too. I urge the State Government to immediately set up a High Level Enquiry and ensure that people who are responsible for this are brought to justice at the earliest," he tweeted.

Police have said there were rumours of thieves taking advantage of the nationwide lockdown to break the chain of transmission of the novel coronavirus.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray tweeted on Sunday night that all the accused had been arrested on the day of the crime itself. "The Palghar incident has been acted upon. The police has arrested all those accused who attacked the 2 sadhus, 1 driver and the police personnel, on the day of the crime itself," Mr Thackeray tweeted.

Nobody guilty in this heinous crime and shameful act will be spared and they will be brought to justice in the strongest way possible," he said.

However, they also said investigations into the exact cause behind this brutal and inhuman crime are ongoing; the cops feel the attack on the team of officials suggests the mob was intent on killing the trio.

The mob refused to listen to repeated instructions and pleas, the cops said.

The three men who were killed have been identified as Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), Nilesh Telgane (35), who was driving the care they were travelling in, and Chikane Maharaj Kalpavrikshgiri (70). Two of them were sadhus. They were travelling towards Surat to attend the funeral of a common acquaintance.

A case has been registered at the Kasa Police Station located in the interior of Palghar district.

Mob lynching is a serious problem in india and don’t know when the law gets passed to bring fear among the accused. serious mob lynching have taken place in last 20 years which are initiated by rumour mongering and unverified false information. Age of social media has made this even rampant.

It’s cringe worthy when people disregard some mob lynching and acknowledge another especially giving a religion twist to everything. it’s real ignorance in this matter.

The only solution is education, spread awareness and punish those offenders severely.

What barbarians! All those, how many of them they might be, must be handed over strictest possible punishment.

I remember lynching of tabrez ansari where locals tied him to a tree on suspicion of bike theft and when they came to know that he was a muslim then started forcing him to say hindu religious slogans. What a sad incident that shocked the nation !

Mob lynching is present in India bcoz most of the indians have mob mentality.

I remember during in childhood in my colony a thief was caught, ppl just caught & tied him to a electric pole & started beating him with sticks, later paraded him half naked around the colony, that thief was begging for police to arrive to arrest him.

Police should be brought to court as well. It is complacency was criminal.

Countless incidents have emerged from recent days were the police is beating up people for breaking the lockdown. Here when the defenseless need protection and security the police was just standing there doing nothing.

People dont have trust in justice system, they feel the culprit will not be punished because of corruption, so they take law in their own hand to punish the culprit basically becoming judge, jury and executioner same time.

Its more about patience people here want instant justice. If someone does wrong or if they think someone did wrong they want instant justice like instant coffee or instant noodles.

Look at delhi gang rape which happened in 2013 they got hanged in march 2020 where as look at disha rape & murder in hyderabad, police encountered culprits in just 10 days ! Here local telangana govt. got people's pulse of instant justice and hence they made police encounter them.

This mob lynching is not recent thing it has been happening since hundreds of years even before independence

Behind all the glitz and glamour, there seems to be an extremely worrying and ugly side to Indian society.

What is going on? The situation just seems to be getting worse.

Pathetic mob mentality.

Even the police who left them to the mob should be put behind the bars. And everyone of those involved in this should be hanged if the sadhus are proven innocent of the charges being held against them.

This mob mentality is nothing new in India. It possibly exists even in other south asian countries.

There are too many people, young men in particular, who have seemingly nothing to do and keep hanging around looking for entertainment. It is so common that we have a term for it in Hindi ( 'Jhak maarna'). While these time passers often do good things like rushing to a person's help when called, they sometimes come together in gangs to beat up people who are accused of crimes.

This isn't entertainment, this is barbaric behaviour, animal mentality, which has to be stopped.

They were innocent. It's because of some fake rumours mob attacked them.

Palghar lynching: India police arrest more than 100 suspects

More than 100 people have been arrested for allegedly beating three men to death in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

The incident happened in Palghar district on Thursday but a video of the attack went viral on Sunday.

Reports say the men, who were reportedly mistaken for thieves, were going to a funeral when the mob dragged them out of their car.

India has been under lockdown since 25 March to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Among the dead are two Hindu godmen and their driver.

The viral video shows the mob lynching the men as police struggled to rescue them. The mob reportedly suspected that the men were child abductors.

Attacks over child abduction rumours have happened in the past in different parts of the country.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that strict action would be taken against the culprits.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the incident showed that the government was not in control of the law and order situation in the state.

Several Hindu groups have also criticised the incident and raised questions over the lockdown measures in the state.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh said there was nothing communal about the incident.

He added that the victims and the attackers belonged to the same religion. His statement came after several posts on social media tried to stoke religious tensions over the attack.

Indian police is a joke. They watched without helping, sad part is they won't be judged.

If I were Indian, God forbid, I would rather take my chances by arming myself!

No Hindu-Muslim or any communal angle in Palghar lynching case: Uddhav

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday ruled out any communal angle in the Palghar mob lynching incident, in which two sadhus and a driver were killed, while warning that strict action will be taken against those who are igniting communal hatred through social media.

Uddhav, who has received phone calls from both Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to inquire into the incident, added that he had told Shah that there is no communal angle in the incident.

“Since there were curbs on the main roads due to the lockdown, the two sadhus were going to Gujarat from a remote area. They were stopped at the border of Dadra Nagar Haveli and asked to return. On their way back, they were attacked due to a misunderstanding and killed unfortunately,” Uddhav said while addressing the state through webcast on Monday.

He added that while the incident took place in Palghar district, the location was around 110 km away from Palghar, near the border of Union Territory of Dadra Nagar Haveli.

On Thursday night, three men, two sadhus and a driver, were lynched by a mob in Palghar district after allegedly suspecting them to be child kidnappers and organ harvesters. The three were driving to a funeral in Surat when a group of villagers in Gadchinchle, a tribal village in a remote part of Palghar, stopped their car and attacked them with stones, logs and axes.

Uddhav said that there were rumours that the thieves were roaming in the area. “Some people are trying to ignite communal hatred in the incident. There is no Hindu-Muslim angle or any communal angle in it,” he added.

The CM further said that he has spoken to Amit Shah in the morning and briefed him about the incident. He had also received a call from Adityanath on Sunday. “Shah knows that there is no communal angle in it and he said Uddhavji ‘take care’. I also told him that we must look for those people who are igniting communal hatred through social media. Because these people do not suffer after the incidents. They must be located at the earliest and arrested. I have given instructions to the state authorities about it,” he added.

Uddhav also indirectly blamed the authorities of Dadra Nagar Haveli for turning the two sadhus back in the night. “Had the authorities shown some humanity, kept these two sadhus with them at night and handed them over to Maharashtra government the next day, the incident could have been avoided,” he said.

Refuting allegations of government inaction, Uddhav said more than 100 accused, including five main accused, have been arrested a day after the incident on April 16. “They were produced in court on April 18 and reminded in police custody till April 30. Nine minors have been sent to remand homes and search is on to arrest others who are absconding. We will not spare anyone,” he added.

Taking an indirect dig at BJP, the CM said that incidents of mob lynching had taken place in Maharashtra and others states in the last five years as well. “But I don’t want to play politics here. It is shameful incident and shouldn’t happen in Maharashtra. This is not our culture,” he added.

Glad that this has been officially clarified!

When the news first broke on Social Media I saw concerns from many angry Indian citizens accusing the media for being silent, since the victims were Hindu. Many were saying that the attackers look like Rohingya Muslims. People are too quick to look for patterns to suit their political bias instead of focusing on the tragedy. Sad.

According to his caption it seems he believes the Sadhus were attacked due to clothes and "on the day Muslim women will be forced to hide their Burka so that they aren't identified as Muslim.

So far none of the evidence in the case shows that those Sadhus were attacked due to their Hindu faith. The attackers were most likely fellow Hindus too. This guy is using that tragic incident to incite violence and internalize the Hindu victim mentality in India.

boomlive.in has done a great job in investigating this tragedy:

How Child Kidnapping Rumours Led To A Mob Lynching In Palghar

BOOM accessed two Whatsapp forward messages claiming child kidnappers and thieves had attacked several villages in the district.

Fake messages claiming child kidnappers and thieves are on the prowl in various villages in Palghar were viral among local residents, days before a violent mob lynched three people including two Hindu seers. BOOM was able to access these messages which asked residents to stay alert and also led to villages forming neigbourhood watch groups to patrol the streets at night.

On the night of April 16, a mob of over 300 villagers grew violent and attacked three men - Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), Chikane Maharaj Kalpavrikshgiri (70) and their driver Nilesh Telgane (35) who were passing by the village while on the way to Surat to attend a funeral. The police have arrested 110 people including nine juveniles for the same. BOOM found that following the fake messages, most villages including the village Gadchinchale where the attack happened, had reportedly set up neighbourhood watch groups to patrol around the area and it was one such group that attacked the victims.

Some of the messages were also communal in nature, with most asking people to be wary of child kidnappers. One such viral message, that was sent to BOOM by a local journalist, claimed that on April 12, child kidnappers had been seen in villages of Ranshet, Wadhna, Nikane, Ganjad and Sarani. The message in Marathi said the accused resembled 'Muslims and are well built and attack at night'

The Whatsapp forward, when translated to English, reads, "Friends Be Alert, On the night of April 12, thieves had come to Ranshet, Wadhna, Nikne, Ganjad and Saarni. They look just like Muslims and are tall and well built. They enter homes at night from windows and kidnap young children and also teenage boys and girls. Please share this as much as you can."

The most chilling and ironic part of this whole story is that the original rumor was clearly aimed at spreading hate and fear about Muslims. This led to a killing of three innocent people.

One can't speak of this being case of ignorant villagers who were fed up with the justice system and decided to take matters into their own hands. Certain mischievous people are trying to create division in the society and incite violence through systematic spread of fake news and rumors.

Palghar lynching: CID takes over case; Maharashtra home minister says no Muslims among those held

The Criminal Investigation Department of the Maharashtra Police on Wednesday took over the investigation into the lynching of three men in Palghar district last week, the Hindustan Times reported.

This came a day after the National Human Rights Commission issued a notice to the Maharashtra Police chief over the case, stating the “incident is apparently indicative of negligence by public servants”. The commission also sought a detailed report within four weeks, including action taken against the culprits, and relief, if any, granted to the family members of the three men. The Maharashtra government had announced that a high-level inquiry had been set up to look into the case.

On the night of April 16, three Mumbai residents, who were on their way to Silvassa, were lynched by local residents in Gadakchinchale village of Palghar district on the suspicion that they were thieves.

A large mob of villagers had surrounded the car of the three men and started attacking them with sticks and iron rods, leading to the death of all three occupants. The victims were reportedly local religious leaders from Kandivali, who had first tried to take the National Highway to Silvassa but were stopped by police officials enforcing the nationwide coronavirus lockdown.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh shared the list of 101 people taken into custody in connection with the lynching, and said none of those arrested were Muslim.

In a video message posted on his official Facebook page, Deshmukh reiterated that none of the accused in the incident belonged to the Muslim community. “It is unfortunate that communal politics is being played following the incident,” he added. “Some people are having pipedreams about politicising the issue... it is not the time to play politics, but to fight the coronavirus collectively.”

The home minister also shared the complete list of arrested people on Twitter “for those who were trying to make this a communal issue”.

On Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had assured people there was no communal angle in the incident, and said that all accused in the Palghar lynching case will be brought to justice. “Nobody guilty in this heinous crime and shameful act will be spared and they will be brought to justice in the strongest way possible,” he had said.

Meanwhile, Deshmukh had said the police is keeping an eye “on those who are trying to create a rift in society by giving this a controversial spin”.

District Security Chief Vishwa Hindu Parishad Lucknow Dakshina

According to his caption it seems he believes the Sadhus were attacked due to clothes and "on the day Muslim women will be forced to hide their Burka so that they aren't identified as Muslim.

So far none of the evidence in the case shows that those Sadhus were attacked due to their Hindu faith. The attackers were most likely fellow Hindus too. This guy is using that tragic incident to incite violence and internalize the Hindu victim mentality in India.

His facebook post has 40'000 share and about 30'000 like. Just your average trolls.
We have seen so many Muslims being arrested merely on the basis of suspicion for their hate speeches. Will this pest be arrested too?

Probably be made the next CM or something.

This incident has more to it than what meets the eye. I dont believe for a second that there was no communal angle here and 3 Sadhus were simply mistakenly lynched for stealing. I mean c'mmon guys...anyone really believes that? Even 3rd grade bollywood movies has better script than this. Its definitely a communal violence but the reason I was not posting on this thread bcoz there is no concrete proof of it yet.

Communal angle does not always have to be Hindu and Muslims. There are other minority religions in India as well. This place Palghar is famous for Christian missionaries and their attempt of religious conversion. There have been numerous complains made over the years for forced religion conversion in this area. Tweets about those conversions are there as well.

Uddhav Thakrey been a massive failure as a CM so far which was kind of expected after joining hands with congress. But the least he can do is organize a CBI enquiry on this case and everything will be clear.

Check out his facebook page, don't think any action has be taken. I gave the guy the benefit of doubt and thought perhaps after it has been confirmed that this wasn't a communal incident he would make a new post or perhaps make a comment about it. Nope. Even today the comments under his FB video are agreeing with the video and stance. No sense of critical self-reflection.

So far no evidence of either Muslim or Christian involvement. Read the boomlive.in report they are known for fact checking and exposing fake news. In the report it says

BOOM confirmed with the Palghar police who stated that the victims and perpetrators were from the same religion.

It's a shame that instead focusing on elements like spread of rumors and fake news via social media and its impact, almost 7 days after the incident we still have to debate whether it has a communal angle or not.

Are you trying to suggest that BJP is behind all this because they are not in power in Maharashtra just like Delhi? May be you are right this time.

Thats what it seems like.. BJP trying to destroy harmony in states they are not in power, desperation. Now their online supporters are saying they don’t believe its a communal angle , ofcourse they don’t coz they know how BJP works... they got someone innocent killed hoping to spark communal riots.

Yeah, that's why they are called Bharat Jalao Party and rightly so. They have undertaken the task of getting entire India burning in communal flames. And they have succeeded so far in their mission.

Thats what you think. Its Maha govts responsibility

They threw two sadhus and their driver to the mobs to be killed.

And yes there may be a religious angle to it, just not muslim. You will do well to read up on the area, what kind of work juna Akhara sadhus do and who opposes them.

I’m just saying what i think just like you are saying what you and Rajdeep the poster thinks.. what’s wrong in it, if you two can post anything without any article to back this claim am sure i can do this as well.

So my opinion is BJP is instigating riots .

If bjp wanted riots, there would have been riots already. No?

Police that comes under Maha govt threw two sadhus to the mob to be killed. Bjp didnt do that.

Politics is a very dirty game, wouldn't be surprised if BJP got this done to gain political mileage.

This is how fake news and a fake narrative is spread. While mourning the loss of his fellow brethern this Sadhu ji can't help but use the oppertunity to incite hate and violence against precieved enemies of Hindu Rashtra.

The caption by news channel reads :

#पालघर Mahamandaleshwar Shri Bhaiyya Das Ji Maharaj said on the ruthless killing of 2 saints in India - clearly heard in the video #शोएब Mar Shoaib, Shoaib no Hindu who could kill this was done by people of a particular community ..

Bhaiyadas Ji became emotional while saying this

Listen at around 1:35. He claims that repeatedly people from the same community are committing such acts. He further claims that in the footage a voice is heard saying "Shoaib Mar, Shoaib Mar" and Shoaib can't be a Hindu name, implying that the person must have been a Muslim, a proof that a particular community was involved.

I have listened to the footage carefully multiple times and my ears don't seem to be as sharp as Sadhu ji's. I couldn't hear "mar shoaib" despite repeated listening.

Will all these people now come forward and ease the public tension by saying they spoke too early and wrongfully vilified a particular community?

Is this the "Bika Media" extremist Hindus complain about?

I love it when hypocrites who openly support oppression and fascism condemn such acts

It works both way though. All the Indian liberals and bollywood stars who goes to the extent of award wapasi, candle march and protest when minorities gets lynched are maintaining pedestrian silence in this case. You would be naive to think hypocricy dont work both ways.

So what happened here? Was this along religious lines/caste lines/ political difference or something completely different?

3 of the arrested murderers are from BJP. Sarpanch of the village, where the murders took place, is from BJP. This village doesn't have a single Muslim resident.

But somehow, lapdogs are linking it to Muslims. Wah re, illiterates!

No, forget Muslims!

After it became clear very early on that no Maulana ji was involved (one obvious hint was no bearded guy was seen shouting Allahu Akbar in the footage (jk)) the trend shifted towards some how blaming the Christians or "secularists" and holding on to the narrative of this being a targeted lynching of the victims due to their Hindu identity.

The new thing I have become aware of due to this incident is that Hidutva terrorist mindset isn't against Muslims only. Muslims are just the prime target because globally it has become easier to vilify and target Muslims due the shrewd image created by IS terrorists. It's comparatively easier to justify and have others believe it too.

Sooner or later other minorities or "secularists" could be at risk.

Instead of this being an issue for us to reflect upon what grave harm viral fake news through Social Media can cause and how widely accepted justice through mod lynching has become in our part of the world, the supporters of the ruling party prefer and desperately want this to be an Hindu vs non-Hindu issue so that they can strengthen their narrative.

When all attempts have failed to find a communal angel it has become a non-liberal media vs liberal Media issue. Perfect example of using a tragedy to run the family shop.

So what happened here? Was this along religious lines/caste lines/ political difference or something completely different?

This is the best explanation of the incident I have found so far:

https://www.boomlive.in/india/how-c...mob-lynching-in-palghar-7769?infinitescroll=1

Most likely a case of viral fake news about criminals looting from village to village, spread through social media, causing villagers to become paranoid and make group of local goons to fight off any criminal which ultimately led to this tragedy where three travelers were attacked and killed by the mob.

True.

Worst part besides the brutal murder is the time these guys have chosen to further their agenda.

India is engulfed by this huge crisis and these guys are still busy in their polarization attempts?

No wonder every right thinking Indian is laying into these communal elements!

Why No Outcry from BJP or TV Anchors When I Was Attacked, Asks This Hindu Sadhu

New Delhi: The recent mob lynching incident of Palghar led to a massive outcry on television and social media, particularly from Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, Hindutva activists and others associated with right-leaning ideologies. Their response has essentially revolved around the fact that two of three men killed were sadhus affiliated with an akhara in Varanasi. This fact was used by the BJP and a section of television anchors to communalise the incident, even though the attackers were adivasis – considered Hindus by the Sangh parivar – and there was not a single Muslim or Christian among those the police arrested.

The two sadhus, who bear the name ‘Giri’, were initially claimed by Gosavi nomadic tribal leaders as members of their community but Dainik Bhaskar has reported from Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh that the older sadhu was the son of a Brahmin named Chintamani Tiwari. The Palghar police told The Wire they have no information about the identity of the deceased other than their names.

In July 2018, a horrific lynching incident of Gosavi tribals took place in Dhule, Maharashtra. But since the state was ruled by a BJP chief minister at the time, the Hindutva lobby did not make it a big issue. But now that a Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP coalition is ruling the state, the Palghar incident has been given not just a political colour but communal overtones too.

On Wednesday, another saffron-robed person who was brutally attacked by a mob in Jharkhand in July 2018 – Swami Agnivesh – released a video condemning the Palghar murders. He also drew attention to the system’s failure to punish those who had lynched Muslims like Akhlaq, Pehlu Khan and Junaid and then spoke about his own experience at the hands of a mob.

Agnivesh was badly beaten in a mob attack in Pakur, Jharkhand. The FIR registered by the local police identified eight of his attackers – all of whom were affiliated with the BJP, RSS and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), a youth group affiliated to the BJP. Speaking to The Wire on Thursday Agnivesh said that even though the attackers were identified, the then Jharkhand government—led by Raghubar Das of the BJP — dragged its feet.

A month later, in August 2018, Agnivesh was again assaulted in public, allegedly by BJP workers, this time in Delhi near the BJP headquarters where he was headed to pay his respects to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In September 2018, he asked the Supreme Court to club both cases of assault and hand the probe over to the Central Bureau of Investigation but a bench headed by Justice S.A. Bobde, now chief justice of India, refused to intervene.

Agnivesh, who is 81-years-old, has been facing severe health issues since the attack. The attack, he says, has left him battered, and has led to serious health complications, including a serious liver ailment.

“What happened in Palghar is condemnable. But the communal forces that tried to flare up the incident and give an entirely new twist to it by introducing the involvement of Muslims or Christian missionary groups needs to be condemned too,” he said in his video message.

Agnivesh also pointed to the cases of lynching of Muslims and those from the lower castes that were orchestrated in the name of “gourakhsa” by the highly violent cow vigilante groups. “Since the BJP and other right-wing activists are making so much noise. They should also answer why the killers of Akhlaq are not punished? Why has there been no justice in Junaid’s mob lynching case or in Pehlu Khan or Rizwan’s murder cases?” he asks.

Although the then CM of Jharkhand Das had ordered an inquiry in the case of attack on Agnivesh, the investigation never moved ahead. The police registered a FIR against eight BJYM activists, including its district president, and a special investigation team was formed to probe the incident. Das had announced that the incident would be probed by the Santhal Pargana DIG and divisional commissioner. But the case has since been in cold storage, Agnivesh says.

Agnivesh had visited Pakur on July 17, 2018, to attend a programme concerning the Paharia tribe at the Littipara stadium. Just when he was leaving his hotel, a group of protesters began shouting slogans against him. The crowd soon got close to Agnivesh and some of them then assaulted him. He fell to the ground, his clothes were ripped and his turban pulled off.

That incident was filmed and videos of the incident circulated on several social media platforms. Agnivesh says no one bothered to support him although he too was in saffron robes. “I could have been killed in that attack… The prime minister did not feel compelled to condemn the act and till date no police or state government has bothered to investigate the matter,” he said. “No one can claim I was smuggling cows or was involved in slaughtering a cow. I was still attacked. Why did that happen?”

The assault on Agnivesh was reported by one of the channels that has made a campaign out of the Palghar incident, Republic TV, but it added the text “Maoist sympathiser” on its screen to describe the swami and called the attackers a “fringe group” when they were in fact all linked to the BJP in one way or the other. Its reporter also said that one of the reasons for the attack could have been the mob’s concerns that Agnivesh was involved with “Christian missionaries”.

It is not known if the channel’s editor, Arnab Goswami, had organised any prime time panel discussion on this 2018 attack on a Hindu sadhu. A YouTube search drew a blank.

In the Palghar incident of April 16, three persons—of which two were dressed in saffron robe—were murdered after being mistaken for “child abductors” and “thieves” by the local tribal community.

The deceased persons have been identified as 70-year-old Kalpvrush Giri and 35-year-old Sushil Giri, both affiliated to one ‘Shri Panch Dashnam Juna Akhaara’ in Varanasi. Their driver, Nilesh Telgade, was killed too in the attack. In all, 110 persons, including nine juveniles, have been taken into custody and state home minister Anil Deshmukh decided to make all the names public in a desperate attempt to bust the BJP’s claim that it was a communal attack involving Muslims or Christians.

On April 22, Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami was driving home in his motor car when he two motor-cycle borne men attempted to attack him. The accused have been identified as Prateek Mishra and Arun Borade, both office bearers of the Youth Congress in the Sion-Koliwada Assembly constituency. Mishra is the general secretary of the Sion-Koliwada Youth Congress and Borade is the president.

In a TV show earlier that day, Goswami had said that the Palghar murders were committed at the behest of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, whom he described as an “Italian” who had got “Hindu holy men killed:

“…That Italian Sonia Gandhi, who has come from Rome…she is silent today, it seems to me, that in her heart she must be delighted…she is happy that these holy men were killed in a state where she runs the government. She will send a report…I am saying this…she will send a report to Italy…I am saying this…(in the state) where I have made the government, I am getting Hindu holy men killed…and she will be applauded there (in Italy)…wonderful, child, wonderful, you’ve really done well, Sonia Gandhi Antonia Maino…”

Goswami’s remarks are now being investigated by the Mumbai police on a complaint of hate speech filed by a Congress minister.

In India mob lynching aren't just the norm they are in some case also justified and encouraged. Especially when it comes to lynching of someone accused of killing or even transporting a cow. Mob lynching is a problem in our part of the world bus this type of partial justification is unique to India.

In this second video at around 0:25 you can see how the policeman is just standing by watching the guy get beat up and smiling.

This mob lynching culture led to this incident no doubt about it. The policemen didn't do or couldn't do much because they are used to standing by and watching.

It's unfortunate that in this incident, as sort of collateral damage, Hindu Sadhus were the tragic victims where it has become extremely difficult for anyone to justify such an heinous crime.

At least here some had civil courage and tried to stop them. But still: police????

Now these guys could have a reason and the woman might have done something bad but I say no to social justice and yes to stregnthing the justice system.

Did anyone else think of the famous Taliban picture while watching this?
