Confusion reigned in the early hours of Day 3 when Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, didn't come out on the field for the resumption of play – in his place, Mohammad Rizwan took the field as a substitute player.

Moreover, Rizwan was also seen setting the fielding placements as he assumed the leadership responsibilities. There was one problem, however – according to the the rules set by the Marylebone Cricket Club (24.1.2 law), “A substitute shall not bowl or act as captain but may act as wicket-keeper only with the consent of the umpires.”

The confusion became more pronounced when Pakistan opted for a review against Conway. Left-arm spinner Abrar Ahmed trapped the New Zealand opener plumb and as umpire Aleem Dar remained unmoved with the appeal, Sarfaraz came up to have a chat with Abrar, with Rizwan also joining in. Incidentally, both Rizwan and Sarfaraz made the gesture for the review.

another big issue of our team, dont know the rules... always on the wrong end of it...

A quick check of the rules would have avoided this issue.

Basic, simple things being overlooked by this group.

Lovely to see umpires telling Rizwan that he has no authority on the pitch

Beautiful

Beautiful to see Rizwan get embarrassed like this. This is just the beginning of his demise.

Rizwan should have no authoritative role to play when not in the playing 11. It's basic common sense, don't understand how a Substitute can come on the field and start Captaining the side lol.

There is just one natural leader here and that’s Sarfraz.

Babar should either accept the inevitable or at the very least use his brain and let Sarfraz be the pseudo captain and run the show. He can still take the credit for it if it pays off.

Yousuf, Saqlain and Tait have played hundreds of matches between them.

Don't they know the rules.

Nice try by Babur to send his pal to lead in his absence. Tried to kill any chance of revolt/coup. :inti

A real leader who bats below tailenders?

Can you please go back about 3 years ago and ensure we will not find posts from you asking for him to be sacked.

Not really a big issue.

Rizwan is vice, so atleast pcb is consisstent with their policy.

Anyways its onky the media that created the controversy, as if safraz abd rizwan were gifhting gor captaincy. Pcb had to look for their third option which would had been shan masood or sarfraz
