Openers Alex Hales and Jos Buttler put the foot on the accelerator from the opening ball as they put the Kiwi bowling attack to the sword.

But controversy reigned in the fifth over with England sitting at 0/45. The third delivery of Mitchell Satner’s second over was cut in the air from Buttler with Kane Williamson diving and claiming a stunning catch.

Buttler began to walk off as the umpires came together to discuss if the catch had been taken. Williamson gestured to the umpires he had fumbled, but ultimately held onto the catch.

Replays instantly showed the ball had bobbled out of Williamson’s hands and hit the turf before the Kiwi star clutched the ball to his chest.

Buttler walked back to the crease and as he did Williamson offered up a small apology which the English opener appeared to wave off with a smile.

Fans watching the contest weren’t happy with Williamson claiming the catch, despite him offering up an apology after replays showed he didn’t hold on.

Buttler and Hales continued on their merry way, pushing their partnership to 81 before Satner removed the dangerous Hales shortly after he secured his half century.

A well flighted delivery from Satner that drifted wide caught Hales out who had advanced down the wicket and left him a long way out of his crease as the stumps were knocked off.

If being dropped once wasn’t enough, Buttler was put down in the 12th over on 41 after a pull shot went straight to Daryl Mitchell.

What should have been a fairly easy catch was dropped and hit the turf as the English skipper survived once again.

Very poor from him

He should have straight away said that he wasn’t sure about it instead of celebrating like that

What nonsense.

He was the only player on the field who looked unconvinced throughout. Buttler was walking, the other NZ players were celebrating, the soft signal was out but Williamson was doubtful throughout.

Watched it live i thought he caught the ball but looking at again his eyes were away from the ball so error made apology accepted by Butler no issues really.

I am sure he knows there will be replays. So how is this cheating?

Why is everything called cheating. At some point in every players career they will be involved in something like this, its just how sport is. He wasn't cheating he was trying to win. Umpires are there for this reason and we let go of it after the umpire makes his decision.

Wow. This is much worse than Ashwin's catch. Proper cheating

Cut him some slack! Often the fielder doesn't know himself if the catch was clean or not. Kane thought the ball had landed in his hand after it initially slipped. Kane is no cheat!

Australia did the same with Ashwin's lol Actually there was no real controversy. He said he was not sure. Immediately they wrote an article "Big controversy Ashwin cheat" Post Mankading incident in the IPL, they have been targeting him. This is a case of targeting arch-rivals. Some of the Australian magazines have become tabloids

If you watch replay he didn't see ball pitching/bouncing.. he knows he fumbled but thought he takes it clean on rebound.. genuine mistake, not a cheating at all..

Calling Kane or Ashwin claiming catches as cheating makes no sense. We know several instances of wicket keepers or bowlers appealing for caught behind to distract the umpire from giving a wide. Many batsmen stay at the crease even after knowing they have nicked the ball. bowling team appeals for dubious LBWs well aware its missing. All these are part and parcel of the game. No player is foolish to cheat when ther are so many camers capturing in several angles. Thus teh palyers leave the onus to umpires to check with 3rd umpire and claim the catches.

A non issue that has been deliberately been snow balled.

Did he say he wasn't sure?

Looks like cheating but I am giving him benefit of doubt. He is a nice guy.

“You don’t want to be doing that, he’ll make you pay,” Williamson said post-game.

“He played a beautiful knock in a big game. I thought I had squeezed it in my chest, it was a bit embarrassing in the end.”

He should be more embarrassed with that 40 ball 40 than that catch when the RRR was 8 rpo. Even the catch looked blatant.

It is really unfair and a crime to call him a cheater. Williamson didn't realize that it popped out and dropped before it automatically came into his hands. His body language also showed that he wasn't sure .

That innings put the nail on the coffin. It was a selfish innings, a lot worse than what Babar Azam plays sometimes.

Think it was all just an honest misunderstanding, Kane isn’t a cheat, and on the contrary I have always viewed him as a gentleman of the game.
