[VIDEO] "Shoaib just smiled at me and said ‘I’m gonna kill you’ and laughed" : Liam Plunkett

England fast bowler Liam Plunkett recently recalled his Test debut against Pakistan where he had to face an in-form Shoaib Akhtar for the first time in his international career. Akhtar, who is one of the quickest bowlers to have played the game, was known for his blistering pace. Akhtar terrorised some of the best batsmen of his generation during his playing days and enjoyed some fierce duels with them.

Plunkett used to play with Akhtar for Durham in the English county, however, their friendship was swept aside when the Englishman came out to bat against Pakistan in his debut Test match in Lahore in 2005. Akhtar was bowling in full swing for Pakistan and Plunkett was readying himself to tackle the Rawalpindi Express with fear written all over his face. “Frightening stuff,” said Plunkett as he recalled facing Akhtar on his Test debut.

He recalled the fiery spell from Akhtar in an interview with The Broken Trophy podcast. Plunkett said Akhtar was intimidating to face and threatened to kill him when he walked out to bat as a number nine for England.

“In county cricket, I was first-change to Shoaib and Harmy. I was at slip for Harmy and leg-slip for Shoaib. I faced Shoaib Akhtar in my first ever Test match. Because I played with Durham before that, I was marking my run-up before the Test and he just smiled and said ‘I’m gonna kill you’ and laughed," recalled Plunkett.

“I remember it like it was yesterday because I had my bat, at that time – you think [now] these bats are so thick and stuff – but it was Kashmir willow, it was real thin. And I was sat ready to bat, I was next in, and the TV screen’s right there, so you can see it’s like 96, 97, 96 [miles per hour]. Ashley Giles’ stumps get taken out, and I walk out to a guy who’s bowling 90 miles an hour," Plunkett added.

Though Akhtar didn't manage to get Plunkett's wicket in the first innings, a lethal bouncer from him hit Plunkett on his shoulder. The member of England's 2019 World Cup-winning squad said he almost 'sh** his pants' after being hit. But Plunkett did manage to weather the storm and went on to face as many as 51 deliveries in his first Test knock of 9 runs.

“I remember the first one, it looked like I played it well,” he said. “You duck and you turn and you can see it travel to the keeper and the keeper catches it. I got my first medal of honour, he hit me on the shoulder. I pretty much sh** my pants at that point," Plunkett added.

Plunkett was then trapped lbw by Akhtar in the second innings as the Rawalpindi Express went on to pick up a five-wicket haul to help Pakistan win the Test match by an innings and 100 runs.

Typical rawalpindi bowlers
Noone cup of tea not even Pakistani selectors
In the end he thought he was irreplaceable and preferred liposuction to time in the gym. He ended up the anthesis to inzamams tyrant like puritanism
Cool hand luke rubbed shoulders with shah rukh and salman and could even have played a villain in a bollywood film

At his best, Shoaib was a very smart bowler.

Whilst he had electric pace, he could out-think batsmen and that slower ball when he was on-song was a great weapon.

his use of the slower ball in that series was exemplary, i havnt seen a Pakistan pacer do that in test matches since.

This series was basically the end of the Shoaib era. He huffed and puffed for another 6 years, but he had put on too much weight and gained excessive muscle mass.

By 2006-2007, he became overly bulky and lost agility.

Loved Akthar in this series. He was such an entertainer.

Liam Plunkett feels like he has been around forever for some weird reason lol.

England's World Cup winner Liam Plunkett will leave Surrey at the end of the season to play cricket in the United States.

This is not factually correct. Akhtar yorked Giles in the first test match but Plunkett did not play that game. Plunket got a game from the third test match and Giles did not play that game.

I think Akhtar was perhaps 3-4 years older than his official age as is the case with all our cricketers. His body and agility suffered from 2004-2005 when officially he was 30 but in reality he would have been 33-34 at which age fast bowlers are finished.

again those cricketers who uplevel themselves to some greatness after amazing performances
Had he just focussed o his work ethics; he would have been a different bowler

World Cup winner Liam Plunkett taking his career stateside

Liam Plunkett one of England’s 2019 World Cup winners, is departing county cricket for a future in the United States.

Plunkett played 13 Tests, 89 ODIs and 22 Twenty20s for England culminating with a crucial haul of three for 42 in the World Cup final at Lord’s which proved to be his final appearance for his country. The 36-year-old started his domestic career with Durham moved to Yorkshire and spent the past three seasons at Surrey.

When his deal at the Kia Oval expires at the end of the current campaign he will join up with Major League Cricket, a new T20 league entering the American market. As part of the deal, Plunkett will play and coach for The Philadelphians in the Eastern Division of the Minor League Cricket feeder competition.

Plunkett is no stranger to the Philadelphia area, having split his time in recent years between England and his wife Emeleah’s home across the Atlantic. The balance is now set to shift, but Plunkett will remain available for future deals in the Vitality Blast and The Hundred, where he played one match for Welsh Fire before picking up an injury.

“Moving onto the next phase of my career, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to join Major League Cricket and focus my attention on helping to grow the sport in the United States,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed a fantastic career with England and, after retiring from international cricket, I am delighted to be able to help build the sport in America in both playing and coaching capacities.

41 Test wickets @ 37.46
