The title says it all. PCB needs to invest on teaching English and ethics so in future our players will respond well to foreign coaches, tackle the adverse situation and respond well. It will also make us formidable and well respected team.

Your opinion please

Yes.There is no question about it.

While i dont care a dime about English earning you respect since it is afterall just a language and not a measure of your intelligence/formidability. It is however very important to learn English because it is the medium of communication everywhere in the international circuit. And because of lack of communication not only do our players not fully comprehend what the coaches etc are saying they are also not able to convey their thought process. They might also not be able to mingle with their colleagues when they go abroad to play leagues/county etc at a proper level and some might even feel esteem/confidence issues.

Most importantly due to their lack of communication they also make a fool of themselves on the media as their words are not interpreted or conveyed properly.

Since majority come from a poor background or even if they dont , they have not been serious about their education and are unaware of how to conduct themselves in a professional manner. So the PCB should definitely be looking at that.

Just need to be clear communicators.

Ethics is something thatp cant be taught through a cource. Infact ethics in bachelor programs are just a joke of a course, because there is no conclusion in ethics. Ethics is choosing the lesser evil.

The simplest way of teaching the players about whats right and wrong is through banning players for not reporting an approach. Like how mohd irfan and nawaz recieved punishment.

As for english language. No need. They are not some army recruits or diplomats. Every cricketer is able to undersrand cricketing jargons as they hear then during their whole life.

Also people who want to mingle can easily do so. Hasan ali is an example.

Also the players have never made themselves misunderstood due to using poor english.
Players make a joke of themself when tehy say too much or say the wrong thing at the time wrong time.

Also media likes to qoute things out of context.

Pakistani players can communicate in urdu, no need for english communication.

This is just pakistani thing that we think the person is skilful based on his language.

I remember the praises salman butt got for his leadership. Why? Because he gave a good english press conference.

Nowroz mangal the ex afghani captain didnt know or even speak english. Yet look where he has bought up his team to.

Ethics is mostly your family upbringing and the ability to resist temptation.

The Pakistani International players have the finances, life changing sums of money to invest in all these things for themselves

Actually learning a second language is something which engages and boosts your brain power. Our players, especially International ones, are the most Pakistan most people will ever see outside the news media. You have to honor that and look at how it helps them. Now, if it's not an International Player, I wouldn't mind if they learned another language in addition to Urdu. Mandarin seems to be rather important these days, and of course Punjabi, Sindhi, and Pashto are heavily used languages. It could be a very good team building exercise to learn a second language.

By then its too late, this stuff should be taught at club level. Could be organized if they wanted to.

Its not PCB’s job to teach the players basic form of communication. If you wanna be a international cricketer why are you assuming someone will understand your mother tongue?

I think every country should ensure that players know enough English to communicate well. It is because coaches and staffs are often foreign and knowing good English helps.

Regarding ethics, I don't think any course is necessary. Ethics is not black and white.

I agree to some extent about your comment regarding ethics (and morality).
The problem with upbringing in Pakistan is that you have absolutely no idea about ethics.
I remember watching shoaib akhtar in a TV programme.
He mentioned, first time I realised what the truth was on the foreign tours.
I guess your point is we need to revise our curriculum about ethics, make it more current, applicable

Yes absolutely, English is the lingua franca in the cricketing fraternity, and players must be able up communicate effectively with the best coaches in the world. You can't compare to football, they don't have a single dominant language.

Dean Jones in reply to someone saying that they could not understand a word of Shaheen Shah Afridi interview on TV

"At least they try Tony... English is their second language and our guys don’t speak Urdu when they are in UAE for matches when being interviewed."

Shame on the guy who said he couldn’t understand a word he actually spoke quite decently I understood everything easily

I don’t thinks there’s anything wrong with that. Alongside classes on professionalism and yes ethics. They need to know antics like going to a hookah bar before a World Cup match are not okay. We have mainly young players now and we can instill good values in them if we try.

No. If you can't speak it well, don't bother trying. Speak in your own language and have someone translate it for you. They could get their point across a lot better.

If PCb is an organization, players are it’s employees and as long as pcb has knowledge of English as a job requirement, it’s not a must for the players to have the ability to speak and understand English language. If some one don’t understand the way Shaheen speaks English, well it sucks to be him. Pakistanis should proudly speak their mother tongue and may provide a translator as a courtesy to their host.

As far as ethics is concerned, PCB should implement policies and procedure that it’s employees and representatives should adhere to and should provide training and educate the new comers.

should Maybe other foreign coaches learn urudu instead? Pcb doesn't need to grovel up to foreign coaches. They are going to be working for PCB. Not the other way around.
