Full name Ahsan Ali

Born December 10, 1993, Karachi, Sind

Major teams Larkana Bulls, Pakistan Under-15s, Pakistan Under-19s, United Bank Limited, National Bank of Pakistan

Batting style Right-hand bat

Bowling style Legbreak

Interest in cricket

I had the usual introduction to cricket by playing in my local streets in Karachi. I was about ten when I started off playing tape-ball cricket and when my elder brother saw my enthusiasm he told me upfront that I would have the support of the family only if I worked hard as there was tough competition in this sport. I suppose my family wanted to discourage me from taking this as a fad and deserting it when things got rough. Incidentally, it was my elder brother who taught me all about cricket in my early days. He showed me how to hold the bat correctly to play hard-ball cricket as my grip was wrong due to playing tape-ball cricket. It was also my brother who convinced my parents who were a little skeptical about me playing cricket as a profession by telling them that he would ensure that I would continue studying and concentrate on learning the game in a proper manner.

Yuvraj Singh as a role-model

I have admired Yuvraj from a young age which was a problem for many to understand as he is a left-handed batsman and I am right-handed. When my brother heard about this, he got pictures of Yuvraj inverted by using computer software so that he would look like a right-handed batsman and gave them to me to admire and to emulate as he knew that I wanted to be like Yuvraj.

The jump from school to Under-16 cricket and first taste of international competition

I started playing proper inter-school cricket for my school which was the Government Boys High School Zahoor in Liaqutabad Karachi. I was selected for the Pakistan squad for the CLICO International Under-15 Cricket Championships which was held in the West Indies during April-May 2008. This was a low-scoring tournament in which I made one hundred and eighty-one runs in seven games and was part of the team that lost to the hosts West Indies in the final of the tournament. I did not play club level cricket but my participation in the Under-15 Championships in the West Indies helped me in being noticed for the PCB’s ‘Hunt for Heroes’ trial in 2008. In these trials, the former Pakistan spin-bowler Tauseef Ahmed who is currently a member of the Pakistan selection panel selected me for Karachi Under-16s side. I then took part in the Hunt for Heroes One-Day Tournament and was the fifth highest scorer which was to hold me in good stead in the future.

The honour of representing Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup

After my success in the West Indies, I was picked for the squad for the 2010 Under-19 World Cup which was held in New Zealand. I was part of a team which had the likes of Ahmed Shehzad, Babar Azam and Hammad Azam. We were lucky to be coached by former Pakistan batsman Ijaz Ahmed so it was a great experience for me. I played reasonably well in that tournament and of course the highlight of the World Cup for me was the shortened quarter-final against India Under-19s. Not only did we win this game but I also had the highest score of thirty for Pakistan. The experience of playing in a game against India is unique in that everyone gives their hundred and ten percent effort and no one wants to be on the losing side. Unfortunately, and for reasons best known to selectors, I was not included in the 2012 edition of the Under-19 World Cup which is a disappointment for me to this day.

The long wait for a chance to play at the top level in domestic cricket

With some good performances in the bag and the tag of a World Cup player to my name, I was hoping for an early introduction to First-Class cricket but it was not to be. After being failed to be noticed for close to four years for reasons unknown to me, I finally made my First-Class debut in the December of 2013. Before that, I had played some Grade II cricket in the interim and performed well but no one took notice of me and I had no one to plead my case either as I belonged to an ordinary family. Sometimes, I was told that I was a Twenty20 specialist so I asked for Twenty20 slot but even that wasn’t forthcoming.

United Bank Limited’s (UBL) Atif Maqbool turned out to be my saviour as he introduced me to List-A and Twenty20 cricket for UBL before giving me the all-important chance of playing in First-Class for the same team. To be honest, that debut First-Class season was very confusing for me as I was trying to find my feet but thankfully I got encouragement from my captain and management which helped me through, as not playing at any decent level of cricket for almost four years had taken a toll on my form.

The move to National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in 2015

My stay at UBL was an uncomfortable one. Even a double-hundred in the 2014 season was deemed as not good enough and I was soon sidelined for most of the season. This was a tough time for me as I had no one to talk to who could help me or listen to me. I was let go of my employment at UBL without warning and when I asked how they could get rid of a player who had scored a double-hundred, they apologised and said it was because they wanted me to make room for more experienced players. I started with NBP in 2015 but given all that had gone on, I did not score as well as was expected in First-Class or List A formats. I had better luck in the Twenty20 format where I represented Karachi Whites in the National Twenty20 Cup but I suppose better times were ahead as I found out in 2016.

A dream First-Class season in 2016

This is a great season for me so far. I have scored one-hundred and fifty-six against PIA and a fantastic two-hundred against FATA and I feel that this is just the start and I can do much more in this season.

Disappointment of missing a place in PSL 2016 and 2017 editions

Despite some good performances for Karachi Whites in 2015 where I scored one hundred and ninety-four runs in five games at a strike rate of more than one hundred and thirty-six, I was not picked for the emerging category in the PSL. This was a great injustice in my view and to my horror, it has been repeated this year too despite repeated reassurances.

Future aspirations

I would dearly like to forget all I have been through and want to complete this season at the top of the table. What I have learnt is that my only friend and the only one who can help me is my own bat and my determination. If I keep on scoring well then I will be able to show my detractors that they are wrong and I have the talent to succeed.

Been a trifle unlucky but this could be the season which could change his life!

Exciting prospect but he needs to score runs consistently. He scores big in one match and goes for very few runs in another match.
But one thing is confirmed - Ahmed Shehzad will find it extremely difficult to regain his place in the national side unless Najam sethi becomes the chief selector.:uakmal:uakmal:uakmal

Very talented batsman and his interview indicates some rage inside him for not getting enough chances. It will be great If he can translate it to give performances because he looks to lose focus and determination after playing some good knocks

Definitely needs to show more consistency - 200 and 156 in the QAT is a good start.

The main thing that is very impressive about him is his wide array of shots. If he can show good temperament (along with improved fitness) then he definitely has the ability to succeed at the highest level.

Ahsan Ali FC avg is 37 in 14 matches. If he performs well enough to increase it to 50 he could be in consideration for national team.

Best of luck to him for the future.

Always enjoy reading the Talent Spotters.

Ellipsism :

" Majid Ali is one of the few decent prospects in Pakistan. Much better than Tabish, Abbas etc. "

This is your post.

Peak Majid was operating in range of 136 to 143 Kph with sharp bouncer and yorker in his armoury.

Now you please educate Square Drive and Chief Destroyer about a nobody pulling Majid infront of square.

It is his best chance to make a case for himself for PSL inclusion.
He just needs to perform in this tournament with a better control at shot selection and temperament which seem to be his only issues as of now.
With sharjeel and Khalid's possible exclusion from PSL and the addition of a new team , he has real opportunity to force his PSL selection. And once this milestone is achieved given he performs in PSL, international call up is just at his doorstep.

My friends Chief Destroyer and TalentSpotterPk will be really happy today

Picked for t20 cup by Rawalpindi.

Should be in action soon.

I know you aren't his biggest fan, but he looks a promising talent.

He can play with soft hands and rotates the strike very well, and he can also find the boundary with relative ease. The fact he can do both is a real asset.

That said, I hope he has (i) worked on his fitness and (ii) improved against left arm pacers as he had some difficulties against Rumman Raees and Junaid Khan.

I am hopeful he will have a good showing with consistent performances this t20 cup and he can then be picked in the PSL this year. However, I accept if he doesn't perform then sadly he will have to wait- talent is not enough. Attitude and performances also matter.

Alamgir Gym stun Pakistan CC to claim title

KARACHI: Inspired by opener Ahsan Ali’s half-century, Alamgir Gymkhana sealed a shock eight-wicket over fancied Pakistan CC to clinch the KCCA Zone-VI Daud Khan Memorial cricket title after 11 years of trying.

In the final played at the KCCA Stadium here the other day, Mohammad Hasan’s decision to field at the toss vindicated as Pakistan CC, regarded as the country’s topmost club side, were dismissed for just 157 in 39.2 overs.

The only batsman to redeem himself was the left-handed Ali Asad who scored a splendid 79 while striking six boundaries. Fellow left-hander Shaharyar Ghani made 26 and Rameez Raja 22.

The bowling honours were shared by quartet of Ghulam Mudassar (2-22), Usman Khan (2-26), Hassaan Khan (2-27) and Ashiq Ali (2-27).

Alamgir Gymkhana knocked off the required runs in 31 overs as Ahsan struck exactly 50 with the help of six boundaries before fellow opener S.M. Tahami (46, four fours) and Faraz Ali (36, two fours) completed the last rites without being out.

Summarised scores:
PAKISTAN CC 157 in 39.2 overs (Ali Asad 79, Shaharyar Ghani 26, Rameez Raja 22; Ahsan Ali 2-21, Ghulam Mudassar 2-22, Usman Khan 2-26, Hassaan Khan 2-27, Ashiq Ali 2-27); ALAMGIR GYMKHANA 160-2 in 31 overs (Ahsan Ali 50, S.M. Tahami 46 not out, Faraz Ali 36 not out).

Hopefully Ahsan comes into his own this season. He needs to have a good t20 cup and then he will be on the radar for PSL selection, and we have already seen how that opens doors to the national team.

Four other names on note on this report:

Mohammad Hasan- the centrally contracted keeper.
Ghulam Mudassar- left arm seamer
Ashiq Ali- young offspinner. Surprised he wasn't selected in the National T20 Cup.
Hassaan Khan- l/a spinner who plays for Quetta in the PSL.

Dead Man where are you ??

Hope you are doing great dear brother.

Ahsan scored something like 41(47) with 7 fours.

Needs big time.

Fighting with Seborrheic Dermatitis TalentSpotterPk

Ahsan needs to score big

Played in the Ramadan Cup recently and finished in the top five run scorers.

He looked in fine touch throughout the tournament; he really is a delight to watch when he is full flow.

Hopefully his struggles from the past season are behind him and he will make a breakthrough soon.

Chief Destroyer did you watch his recent innings?

He is very talented but from his body outlook he seems to very fat he need to improve his body shape if he want to be consider for pakistan

I hope NBP give him a proper chance this season.

My wish comes true. Great start to the season.

73 (67) in round one of the QeA One Day Cup to help his side post a huge score.

NBP would be fools not to play him in the QeA Trophy (ie FC).

Long may it continue!

51 (55) in round three vs Peshawar to help his side win. Hopefully they upload highlights as he is box office viewing.

Why is he not playing FC this season??

A highly talented player in the mould of Rohit Sharma.

God gifted ability and class yet so inconsistent and unable to give consistent performances.

Missing opportunities provided by NBP.

Such a shame that Ahsan isn’t performing. Two three big knocks can land him PSL contract but he is failing repeatedly.

Came in at five vs SNGPL (List A) and scored a 35 ball 46.

His scores this season in List A (most recent first):

46 (35)
23 (32)
51 (55)
26 (23)
73 (67)

Came in at 185-4 in a tricky chase vs KRL, and scored a 31 ball 40* (4 fours and 2 sixes) to win the game.

Sublime timings in videos above.

Shot Selection and Planning rather naybe weak.

63 today against HBL, really scoring quite consistently in the OD cup this year.

Picked by Quetta in the draft! Smart pick.

Ahsan Ali is making his PSL debut today for Quetta Gladiators.

Big chance for the lad. Making his PSL Debut for QG. Ive heard great things about him by fellow players!

Excellent talent, seems to have extra time against extreme pace and also a good player of spin, as talented as Akmal when it comes to power and shots.

Same problems of Akmal as well, tries to muscle almost every delivery.

That ball kept low.

But not many top order bats around in Pak who can tonk the ball against quality bowlers. I think this guy can have a future.

Needs to be tested in Pak A and could be ready by next year.

Needs to work on his fitness..
Looked tired and Was breathing very heavily during his later part of his inning

Any reason why his stats aren't quite upto the mark? mak36

Politics mainly.

Has had very few (sporadic) chances. Debuted in 2013 and to date has only played 23 FC matches, 34 List A matches and 30 T20s. There have been whole seasons/tournaments where he hasn't even been picked for any squad, let alone playing XI. Just watch this: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5fnu4k

Check his average in this year's QeA Cup and then try and work out why Karachi didn't play him in National T20 Cup (that too, after he had been picked for PSL!) So he is good enough for PSL but not good enough for a domestic tournament according to domestic coaches :)). Even though he scored brilliantly this season he didn't feature in any FC matches.

Had a poor season last year but a lot of that seemed to be down to confidence- was benched the moment he had one poor performance e.t.c. and then brought back- no planning/support. Just read his interview; it doesn't paint a pretty picture of domestic cricket.

Thankfully QG did their homework this year, saw he performed well in Ramadan Cup and QeA Cup, saw he was obviously talented and selected him for PSL. Otherwise his career was going nowhere.

He needs to lose some weight and improve against left arm seam, but I rate him highly. As mentioned in my earlier post, he plays with soft hands and rotates the strike very well and he also finds the boundary with ease. Was trying to overhit it at times but that got better as the game went on.

Really want him to be given a proper chance, he has shown in this year's QeA Cup that he will make the most of it.

Beautiful post, very informative. Thank you bro.

Really hope he keeps scoring for Quetta and atleast cements his spot for them for the next season onwards, along with being given more chances in domestic and finally, being given a call-up to the national side if he keeps performing, InshaAllah.

Thanks bro. The good thing is Nabeel Hashmi (QG's player manager) rates Ahsan highly so expect him to get more chances.

One thing to note re Ahsan is how well he rotates the strike (unlike most pakistani batsmen). Yesterday he only played seven dot balls on a track everyone was struggling on.

As mentioned in one of my previous posts, Ahsan can bat in the middle order too so he definitely gives options. Hopefully he impresses Mickey today.

Ahsan Come On Yaaarrrrr :-//

Thunder Bolt high quality drive for four against Mohammad Amir and two balls later a nothing short of Aamer Yamin to be back in the Hut.

Frustrating.

Footwork an issue as shown today.

Nothing shot and caught behind.

He is very loose and someone not solid while batting.

Needs to be more confident and consistent with his shot selection and game analysis.

This is my little observation.

TalentSpotterPk

Tried being too cute with that shot. No problem. He will learn from it.

Should be in our current T20I side
open with Ahsan and Babar
Fakhar at 3
drop tallat

Abdullah719 will catch up later but how did he bat?

Why doesn't this lad play much domestic cricket?? He has power and rotates the strike well for a Pakistani batsmen. Can be worked upon.

Abdullah719 will catch up later but how did he bat?

Again didn't get to watch his whole innings but he was imperious against Yasir in the beginning. He really backs himself and plays his shots with confidence which is striking, if the ball is full or short then he goes after it. One thing he might need to work on is to play with soft hands more often to rotate strike more effectively.
